i hope you:ve been well. i write to you because recentlu ive become obsessed with oekaki boards + PaintBBS, i wasnt there, so its all very mysterious to me, plus so much of it was lost, theres modern day oekaki boards but very general and of course very few people frequent them. Overall the topic of early digital art and the communities formed around it fascinates me ,.. tegaki, tegaki-e, tewi, personal websites old fanart websites etc etc etc it blows my mind how the beginnings of digital art are not properly studied or even archived it breaks my heart this keeps me awake at night

iirc, you mentioned oekaki boards a while back so i was wondering . About your experience with these art tools and online spaces ., if you would like to share........ Thank you so so so much . ..

Oh wow thanks for asking , oekakis were a huge part of my life when i was a kid, genuinely heartbreaking to me as well (How Gone & Forgotten they are) ... i looked around for any old art i made on various oekakis throughout time, sadly couldnt find any,

But your message inspired me to look up my old oekaki in the wayback machine and by some miracle, there are a few captures of it??

None of the art or images work, which is so disappointing to see, but just seeing the colors of the layout again, and some of the comments, made me really happy. Yes in 2007 i started Bubble Mew Oekaki for me & my friends to use. A lot of oekakis could be pretty competitive & intimidating so i wanted my own oekaki where we could just be ourselves and have fun without pressure.

i LOVED lurking the suta-raito oekakis which were huge, espeically lurked hard on the Advanced Oekaki, because you could sometimes watch live replays of the artist's process, i studied these replays a lot to improve my techniques & Had big dreams of someday being accepted into SR advanced, at the time i couldn't even get into SR intermediate lolll <3

yeah...i dont have many specific memories, i was just a kid, it was forever ago. But i wish oekakis were still a big thing. oekaki, deviantart gaia & neopets were my formative social media experiecnes. They gave me so much motivation to practice & share my work which has always remained a big part of me. Thank you again for the q, and for appreciating the history of the web/digital art !!! :heart: pmd9
