Greenwashing set Canada on fire

As a teenager growing up in Ontario, I always envied the kids who spent their summers tree planting; they'd come back from the bush in September, insect-chewed and leathery, with new muscle, incredible stories, thousands of dollars, and a glow imparted by the knowledge that they'd made a new forest with their own blistered hands.
I was too unathletic to follow them into the bush, but I spent my summers doing my bit, ringing doorbells for Greenpeace to get my neighbours fired up about the Canadian pulp-and-paper industry, which wasn't merely clear-cutting our old-growth forests – it was also poisoning the Great Lakes system with PCBs, threatening us all.
At the time, I thought of tree-planting as a small victory – sure, our homegrown, rapacious, extractive industry was able to pollute with impunity, but at least the government had reined them in on forests, forcing them to pay my pals to spend their summers replacing the forests they'd fed into their mills.
I was wrong. Last summer's Canadian wildfires blanketed the whole east coast and midwest in choking smoke as millions of trees burned and millions of tons of CO2 were sent into the atmosphere. Those wildfires weren't just an effect of the climate emergency: they were made far worse by all those trees planted by my pals in the eighties and nineties.
Writing in the New York Times, novelist Claire Cameron describes her own teen years working in the bush, planting row after row of black spruces, precisely spaced at six-foot intervals:

Cameron's summer job was funded by the logging industry, whose self-pegulated, self-assigned "penalty" for clearcutting diverse forests of spruce, pine and aspen was to pay teenagers to create a tree farm, at nine cents per sapling (minus camp costs).
Black spruces are made to burn, filled with flammable sap and equipped with resin-filled cones that rely on fire, only opening and dropping seeds when they're heated. They're so flammable that firefighters call them "gas on a stick."
Cameron and her friends planted under brutal conditions: working long hours in blowlamp heat and dripping wet bulb humidity, amidst clouds of stinging insects, fingers blistered and muscles aching. But when they hit rock bottom and were ready to quit, they'd encourage one another with a rallying cry: "Let's go make a forest!"
Planting neat rows of black spruces was great for the logging industry: the even spacing guaranteed that when the trees matured, they could be easily reaped, with ample space between each near-identical tree for massive shears to operate. But that same monocropped, evenly spaced "forest" was also optimized to burn.
It burned.
The climate emergency's frequent droughts turn black spruces into "something closer to a blowtorch." The "pines in lines" approach to reforesting was an act of sabotage, not remediation. Black spruces are thirsty, and they absorb the water that moss needs to thrive, producing "kindling in the place of fire retardant."
Cameron's column concludes with this heartbreaking line: "Now when I think of that summer, I don’t think that I was planting trees at all. I was planting thousands of blowtorches a day."
The logging industry committed a triple crime. First, they stole our old-growth forests. Next, they (literally) planted a time-bomb across Ontario's north. Finally, they stole the idealism of people who genuinely cared about the environment. They taught a generation that resistance is futile, that anything you do to make a better future is a scam, and you're a sucker for falling for it. They planted nihilism with every tree.
That scam never ended. Today, we're sold carbon offsets, a modern Papal indulgence. We are told that if we pay the finance sector, they can absolve us for our climate sins. Carbon offsets are a scam, a market for lemons. The "offset" you buy might be a generated by a fake charity like the Nature Conservancy, who use well-intentioned donations to buy up wildlife reserves that can't be logged, which are then converted into carbon credits by promising not to log them:

The carbon offset world is full of scams. The carbon offset that made the thing you bought into a "net zero" product? It might be a forest that already burned:

The only reason we have carbon offsets is that market cultists have spent forty years convincing us that actual regulation is impossible. In the neoliberal learned helplessness mind-palace, there's no way to simply say, "You may not log old-growth forests." Rather, we have to say, "We will 'align your incentives' by making you replace those forests."
The Climate Ad Project's "Murder Offsets" video deftly punctures this bubble. In it, a detective points his finger at the man who committed the locked-room murder in the isolated mansion. The murderer cheerfully admits that he did it, but produces a "murder offset," which allowed him to pay someone else not to commit a murder, using market-based price-discovery mechanisms to put a dollar-figure on the true worth of a murder, which he duly paid, making his kill absolutely fine:

What's the alternative to murder offsets/carbon credits? We could ask our expert regulators to decide which carbon intensive activities are necessary and which ones aren't, and ban the unnecessary ones. We could ask those regulators to devise remediation programs that actually work. After all, there are plenty of forests that have already been clearcut, plenty that have burned. It would be nice to know how we can plant new forests there that aren't "thousands of blowtorches."
If that sounds implausible to you, then you've gotten trapped in the neoliberal mind-palace.
The term "regulatory capture" was popularized by far-right Chicago School economists who were promoting "public choice theory." In their telling, regulatory capture is inevitable, because companies will spend whatever it takes to get the government to pass laws making what they do legal, and making competing with them into a crime:

This is true, as far as it goes. Capitalists hate capitalism, and if an "entrepreneur" can make it illegal to compete with him, he will. But while this is a reasonable starting-point, the place that Public Choice Theory weirdos get to next is bonkers. They say that since corporations will always seek to capture their regulators, we should abolish regulators.
They say that it's impossible for good regulations to exist, and therefore the only regulation that is even possible is to let businesses do whatever they want and wait for the invisible hand to sweep away the bad companies. Rather than creating hand-washing rules for restaurant kitchens, we should let restaurateurs decide whether it's economically rational to make us shit ourselves to death. The ones that choose poorly will get bad online reviews and people will "vote with their dollars" for the good restaurants.
And if the online review site decides to sell "reputation management" to restaurants that get bad reviews? Well, soon the public will learn that the review site can't be trusted and they'll take their business elsewhere. No regulation needed! Unleash the innovators! Set the job-creators free!
This is the Ur-nihilism from which all the other nihilism springs. It contends that the regulations we have – the ones that keep our buildings from falling down on our heads, that keep our groceries from poisoning us, that keep our cars from exploding on impact – are either illusory, or perhaps the forgotten art of a lost civilization. Making good regulations is like embalming Pharaohs, something the ancients practiced in mist-shrouded, unrecoverable antiquity – and that may not have happened at all.
Regulation is corruptible, but it need not be corrupt. Regulation, like science, is a process of neutrally adjudicated, adversarial peer-review. In a robust regulatory process, multiple parties respond to a fact-intensive question – "what alloys and other properties make a reinforced steel joist structurally sound?" – with a mix of robust evidence and self-serving bullshit and then proceed to sort the two by pantsing each other, pointing out one another's lies.
The regulator, an independent expert with no conflicts of interest, sorts through the claims and counterclaims and makes a rule, showing their workings and leaving the door open to revisiting the rule based on new evidence or challenges to the evidence presented.
But when an industry becomes concentrated, it becomes unregulatable. 100 small and medium-sized companies will squabble. They'll struggle to come up with a common lie. There will always be defectors in their midst. Their conduct will be legible to external experts, who will be able to spot the self-serving BS.
But let that industry dwindle to a handful of giant companies, let them shrink to a number that will fit around a boardroom table, and they will sit down at a table and agree on a cozy arrangement that fucks us all over to their benefit. They will become so inbred that the only people who understand how they work will be their own insiders, and so top regulators will be drawn from their own number and be hopelessly conflicted.
When the corporate sector takes over, regulatory capture is inevitable. But corporate takeover isn't inevitable. We can – and have, and will again – fight corporate power, with antitrust law, with unions, and with consumer rights groups. Knowing things is possible. It simply requires that we keep the entities that profit by our confusion poor and thus weak.
The thing is, corporations don't always lie about regulations. Take the fight over working encryption, which – once again – the UK government is trying to ban:

Advocates for criminalising working encryption insist that the claims that this is impossible are the same kind of self-serving nonsense as claims that banning clearcutting of old-growth forests is impossible:

They say that when technologists say, "We can't make an encryption system that keeps bad guys out but lets good guys in," that they are being lazy and unimaginative. "I have faith in you geeks," they said. "Go nerd harder! You'll figure it out."
Google and Apple and Meta say that selectively breakable encryption is impossible. But they also claim that a bunch of eminently possible things are impossible. Apple claims that it's impossible to have a secure device where you get to decide which software you want to use and where publishers aren't deprive of 30 cents on every dollar you spend. Google says it's impossible to search the web without being comprehensively, nonconsensually spied upon from asshole to appetite. Meta insists that it's impossible to have digital social relationship without having your friendships surveilled and commodified.
While they're not lying about encryption, they are lying about these other things, and sorting out the lies from the truth is the job of regulators, but that job is nearly impossible thanks to the fact that everyone who runs a large online service tells the same lies – and the regulators themselves are alumni of the industry's upper eschelons.
Logging companies know a lot about forests. When we ask, "What is the best way to remediate our forests," the companies may well have useful things to say. But those useful things will be mixed with actively harmful lies. The carefully cultivated incompetence of our regulators means that they can't tell the difference.
Conspiratorialism is characterized as a problem of what people believe, but the true roots of conspiracy belief isn't what we believe, it's how we decide what to believe. It's not beliefs, it's epistemology.
Because most of us aren't qualified to sort good reforesting programs from bad ones. And even if we are, we're probably not also well-versed enough in cryptography to sort credible claims about encryption from wishful thinking. And even if we're capable of making that determination, we're not experts in food hygiene or structural engineering.
Daily life in the 21st century means resolving a thousand life-or-death technical questions every day. Our regulators – corrupted by literally out-of-control corporations – are no longer reliable sources of ground truth on these questions. The resulting epistemological chaos is a cancer that gnaws away at our resolve to do anything about it. It is a festering pool where nihilism outbreaks are incubated.
The liberal response to conspiratorialism is mockery. In her new book Doppelganger, Naomi Klein tells of how right-wing surveillance fearmongering about QR-code "vaccine passports" was dismissed with a glib, "Wait until they hear about cellphones!"

But as Klein points out, it's not good that our cellphones invade our privacy in the way that right-wing conspiracists thought that vaccine passports might. The nihilism of liberalism – which insists that things can't be changed except through market "solutions" – leads us to despair.
By contrast, leftism – a muscular belief in democratic, publicly run planning and action – offers a tonic to nihilism. We don't have to let logging companies decide whether a forest can be cut, or what should be planted when it is. We can have nice things. The art of finding out what's true or prudent didn't die with the Reagan Revolution (or the discount Canadian version, the Mulroney Malaise). The truth is knowable. Doing stuff is possible. Things don't have to be on fire.

Is paper made at home with the blender method really always low quality? I've been wanting to learn to do it for ages and planned on doing so once I had enough space, it seemed like a craft with a relatively low bar of entry that I could do despite my disabilities and a good way to recycle all the junk mail I get, but if it's doomed to be low quality and fall apart it kinda sounds pointless to learn? I mean I never intended to do anything in particular with the paper, the process itself is what made my brain get all "oh I wanna do that", but if I won't even be able to use it to draw or write or give it to someone who can use it for that...idk. Are there ways to modify the shredded paper to pulp method so the paper has a better chance of being useful? Or is that also essentially impossible without a huge expensive machine?
(Also no worries if you don't have the spoons to answer, I always planned on doing my own research before starting and am still going to do that at some point regardless if I decide to actually try or not.)
Quick answer (might investigate more later if the curse lets me): it's going to depend partially on what you use as your base paper and what you're planning to use it for. My background is bookbinding and conservation, where papers need to meet pretty specific quality requirements bc they're used in ways that put them under strain (folding, glueing, being folded and frequently handled, often being the failure point of a binding or repair). Paper that's being used to draw with dry media or as an art object won't be subjected to that kind of stress, so it doesn't matter as much if it's fragile. Things to consider:
Thin sheets of paper will exacerbate the problems; a really thin sheet of blender-made paper might just not be usable, but if you pull chunkier sheets they'll hold up better
Using better-quality paper to begin with will get you a better-quality product. If you have any offcuts of watercolor or printmaking paper or good sketchbook paper, it will work best. Since you mentioned using up junk mail, know that it's probably going to make especially weak paper, though if you use a mixture of papers you can offset that somewhat. If you care about longevity, stay away from newsprint because it's acidic.
Even weak paper usually won't fall apart from basic handling, but it could be very brittle (cracking if you fold it) and not have much abrasion resistance (ripping up if you try to erase pencil lines), so bear that in mind when you're deciding what to do with it. It's also likely to be very fragile when wet.
You can draw or write with dry media on almost any paper, but if you want to use ink you might want to look into sizing. Even good-quality handmade paper is very absorbent and usually needs to be treated with a sizing agent to keep the ink from feathering out. The most common is gelatin, but I'm sure there are others.
The surface might also be very rough, making a pen/brush skip around. Paper can be burnished, which is done industrially with hot rollers and you can do yourself with a bone folder. It's pretty labor-intensive though
You can take advantage of the thickness and texture by making art paper—add tea or dried plants or glitter or little scraps of unpulped paper to your vat! Then the use of the paper is Being Cool so you don't have to worry about what else you can do with it
Also look into pulp painting! It's a technique where you actually *want* overprocessed fiber because you can use it to paint or stencil designs on other pieces of paper that have been couched and pressed but not dried yet. It was one of my favorite techniques to play around with when I was doing papermaking!
TLDR: You can't make really high-quality paper with the blender method, but you can definitely make usable stuff as long as you keep the strengths and limitations of the technique in mind!

A passing thought about alien abduction passed through your thoughts as the image of the tear in reality you saw in the cave system came back to the front of your thoughts. An image of a dark figure spraying a gas in your face floats to the front of your thoughts while you get snippets of yelling and beams of light hitting people like they were solid. 
Chapter 1
The first thing you notice upon waking up, besides the fact that you weren’t currently a bloody pulp smeared against the pavement, was the oddly bright light that was shining down on you. It pricked sharply through your eyelids, making you aware of the ever-growing headache burrowing into your brain. The second thing you noticed was that your arms and feet were shackled to the surface you were lying on, as well as the fact that you seemed to be wearing lightweight metal gauntlets around your forearms. They extended from just below your wrist to your elbow, and the metal seemed almost flexible. 
Your eyelids felt heavy as you tried to open them, your mind foggy and trying to piece together the events that led to you lying here. A thought about alien abduction passed through your head as the image of the tear in reality you saw in the cave system came back to the front of your thoughts. An image of a dark figure spraying a gas in your face floats to the front of your mind while you got snippets of yelling and beams of light hitting people like they were solid. 
A cough tumbles out of your mouth, weak and raspy as it digs against your throat like sandpaper, causing you to wince at the sensation. The headache has now graduated to feeling like you were being lobotomized with zero medication. You finally manage to force your eyes open enough to see that a large figure, clad entirely in black, is standing at the edge of your bedside and just staring at you. 
Your vision is too blurry to make out any of their features, just that they are tall and are probably wearing a mask. The figure made a sort of grunt before turning around and walking to another part of the room that was currently obscured. A few seconds passed before they returned, this time with a glass of what appeared to be water and some pills in a paper cup. 
The water was set on the bedside table before a gloved hand was putting the pills against your mouth. On instinct, you resisted, lips puckering as you fought to keep the pills out of your mouth. 
“It’s the antidote for the gas you were sprayed with. It will also help with the headache you currently have,” said the figure, voice deep and gravelly. The voice was intimidating but also unnatural sounding, like it had been put through a machine. 
With trepidation at trusting who appeared to be your captor, you quickly weighed the various pros and cons before deciding to take a risk. Your situation truly couldn’t be worse than it currently was, and not feeling like you were fighting to drag your thoughts through mud would help with deciding the next steps. With eyes fixed firmly on the fingers at your mouth, you finally opened your lips a crack. The fingers pushed the pills in until they rested against your tongue before presenting you with the water glass, one of them now supporting your head so you didn’t choke. 
The water was cool and refreshing, soothing your sore throat. You drank the entire glass greedily before laying your head back on the pillow, eyes closing. The relief from your headache was almost immediate, with the brain fog receding soon afterward. The overhead light was dimmed slightly before a chair was dragged closer to your bedside, clothing shuffling as your maybe kidnapper settled themselves in the seat. 
“If I promise not to bolt out of here, would you be able to uncuff me from the table?” you asked, voice raspy and cracking from the amount of screaming you’d done earlier. 
The figure looked up from the tablet they were working on, taking a few seconds to process what you’d said. Though you couldn’t see their face, you could tell they were going through various possible scenarios in their head. After a few seconds they seemed to decide you weren’t a threat, at least not a big one, because the cuffs suddenly receded into the table. 
“I’d sit up slowly if I were you. You’ve been unconscious for over 12 hours,” said the man, eyes fixed on the tablet as they resumed their typing. 
You heeded the warning, rising slowly to a sitting position before rubbing at your wrists and ankles. You then noticed that you’d been changed from your previous hiking clothes into a plain hospital gown. The fabric seemed to be slightly higher quality than what you were used to seeing in most hospitals, but it was still ill-fitting and slightly itchy. 
“Where am I? Where are my clothes? Why did you take me here? Why-” you asked, questions tumbling out of your mouth with little input from your brain. 
Anxiety was bubbling through your entire being, crashing through you in waves as you started shaking. Goosebumps raised on your skin as you went cold with a dull ache taking root in your chest. Dread travelled from your chest down to your gut, where it took root like a concrete block sinking to the bottom of a lake. 
“I’ll be asking the questions here,” said the man, interrupting your stream of questions. He pulled a plastic card from the belt around his waist, which, upon closer inspection, you saw was your ID. You’d put it into your backpack in case a worst-case scenario happened so your body could be identified. “Is this you?”
The disaster scenarios you’d gone over in your head had included a cave-in or getting lost. Falling through space and time to god knows where had decidedly not even been a blip on your radar. 
“Yep, that’s me,” you answered, earning another grunt in response as he put the card back where he’d gotten it from. 
“There is no record of you anywhere on Earth. No birth certificate, no citizenship, nothing. The address listed on that card belongs to an animal hospital. So, I’ll ask again, who are you?” asked the man, leaning dangerously close to you. In response, you try your best to back away but just end up falling back on your elbows. 
You open your mouth to answer when you catch sight of his chest which had been previously hidden by his cape. The iconic bat symbol was etched into the chest armour, the black just barely standing out against the dark grey. Your eyes then trail up to his face, covered mostly with a cowl that had pointy ears on it as well as white caps to cover the eyes. The small bit of skin you could see was pale and looked dry, a small smattling of black hairs poking through the skin to indicate he hadn’t shaved that morning. 
The lenses narrowed as he stared back at you while his jaw clenched ever so slightly, lips thinning a bit with the expression. 
Dots that had no business connecting were lining up in your head. 
And as more of those nonsensical dots connected, the anxiety from earlier reared its ugly head. The emotions were stronger this time, warring against you until you felt on the verge of a panic attack. While your heart was feeling like someone had punched through your chest and decided to squeeze it until it exploded, another change was happening. 
The air around you felt electric and the gauntlets you were wearing started to vibrate ever so slightly. The energy in the air seemed to almost solidify, wrapping around your body in a soft light. The energy-infused light would flare out before being absorbed into the gauntlets. 
However, the more of the power the gauntlets absorbed the faster they vibrated against your skin. 
You saw the masked man reach back down to the belt around his waist as he stood up and subtly started backing away. The gloved fingers thumbed one of the compartments and you had a pretty good idea about what was inside of it. 
Going on pure instinct, you slid off the table, putting your back to the curtains surrounding the hospital bed while angling yourself away from your captor. It turned into a deadly game of chicken. 
Who would move first?
The question was answered when he ultimately made the first move, bringing the small canister out again. 
Before you could be sent back into another mini coma, however, you made a move of your own. 
Having noticed how the metal on your arms was behaving you brought one arm down hard over the other. A metallic ‘bing’ rang out at the impact before a surge of built up power left the gauntlets and hit the man square in the chest. 
The curtain partition surrounding the bed fell over as the man hit the far back wall with a low groan. He appeared dazed as he grasped around for something to pull himself up by. 
Knowing you wouldn’t be getting another chance like this, you ran out of the room and found yourself in a metal hallway. It was chrome, to be exact, with most everything around you being in some shade of gray. The floor was cold under your bare feet, hospital gown settling just below your knees but doing nothing to help with the chill of the surrounding air. 
As you were trying to find a place to leave an alarm rang out, angry sirens blaring through the halls as flashing lights bathed everything in shades of red. Your spiralling emotions were continuing to feed the gauntlets on your arms, their vibrating at an almost painful level but you didn’t have it in your to care at the moment. 
Every door you passed slammed in your face as the whole building went into lockdown. You could hear voices shouting distantly but none of them seemed to be directly seeking you out. 
That is until an eerie green light washed over you before gradually solidifying, like if it trapped you slowly enough you wouldn’t realize it was happening. 
You ended up discharging the excess energy from the gauntlets again, the power slamming into the light before you and shattering it. The opening was slim but enough for you to dodge away and throw yourself headlong down a different hallway. 
Your breathing became labored the longer you ran, air scraping past your still sore throat and a stitch making itself known in your side. The panic clouding your brain made you fail to notice how certain doorways were left open long enough for you to slip through while all the others would close too fast for you to react. 
You weren’t making your way towards freedom. 
No.
You were being herded. 
This kept on until you burst into an area that resembled a commissary. Various people stood all along the edges, tensed for a fight with their weapons raised. 
Tears fell from your face as the reality of your situation sank in more. 
A lone smoke bomb rolled to a stop at your feet before discharging, your limbs feeling like lead as you started to collapse. 
Strong arms caught you as your knees gave out. 
The last thing you saw before slipping into unconsciousness was a green domino mask.

Teeth
Dear Mr. Caradoc,
this is me emailing you so you have this in writing, just like you asked me to. I'm nervous to leave a paper trail, for obvious reasons, but I also trust that you aren't going to use this against me. On the other hand, I am grimly excited. Like this, nobody will be able to say that I didn't ask for help before it was too late, least of all you.
Which brings me to my point: please, for the love of God, help me. I've tried everything by now, dentists, doctors, family, friends, nobody can help me. They are all itching to send me to a therapist, or better yet a closed institution, and as fast as possible too. But I am telling you right now, if you call the police on me for a wellness check and I am locked away, my blood is on your hands.
With that out of the way: Here is what you didn't want to hear from me the other day at the coffee machine, properly and in writing.
It all started early one morning. I usually wake up around five these days, but I remember it being even earlier that day, I think around 3am or 4am. Did you know that we feel pain stronger at night than during the day? I looked it up. It peaks exactly at 3am. But even without looking that up, I could've told you, because the pain I felt that morning was something I'm never going to forget.
Have you ever gotten a root canal, Mr. Caradoc?
I did, two years ago. It was my lower molar, the first on the right side. I can still see the filling, I think, when I pull my lips back—well, I could, anyways. My dentist did a pretty good job all around, not just with the actual procedure, but also in explaining to me how it works. When a tooth is infected or inflamed down to the pulp, the very inside underneath enamel and dentin, what they will do is, they will bore a hole in the respective decaying tooth, and then hollow it out completely, removing everything within it that's alive, and then fill it with something dead and inert, with rubber and cement. And although it is a dead man walking from then on, surrounding tissue is able to keep such a tooth alive, as my dentist told me, almost indefinitely. He did an excellent job hollowing me out, but it was a bad day to find out that I don't properly respond to the anesthetic he used.
It was that same pain that I felt again that morning, at 3 or 4 in the pain hour, and that was what I was looking for in the mirror as I was standing there in the dim grey light and pulling my mouth open with a finger. A sign that my root canal had to be redone.
But what I saw instead was, and I know how difficult this is to believe: a tiny, tiny dark door, hollow, maybe more of an archway, smaller than the pin of a needle, carved right into the enamel of my tooth.
The first thing I did was of course to call my mom up in a panic. She had to spend twenty minutes calming me down before I'd stopped crying for long enough to take a picture of it, and then when I did and sent it to her, I could immediately hear the pity in her voice. She told me that it was a very normal thing to have nightmares like this during pregnancy, and that she had gone through the exact same thing when she was pregnant with me. I have to admit that I got very angry at her for it. I know what a nightmare is, I am not a child. I was wide awake. People all around me have taken on this patronizing air towards me ever since I've started showing, as if carrying a baby somehow negates everything I have accomplished and everything I am, and has turned me into some fragile stupid thing.
I hung up on her. I'm not proud of it. We haven't been on the best of terms anyways, and I'm sure this didn't make it better.
Four hours later, I stood on my dentist's doormat, practically banging at the door to be let in. I was overjoyed when he opened my mouth to inspect the molar and immediately agreed to give me a filling, but it only struck me why he'd told me to take the day off as I was inspecting the molar in the rear view mirror of my car, and all he had done was to fill in the archway, leaving the intricate carvings around it alone. And they were intricate now: It was as if somebody was miming pillars around the hole in my tooth. I stormed back into his office in distress, and found myself set up with a blanket and some hot tea in the waiting room as one of the dentist's assistants patted my knee, instead of just filling the damn structure in.
I went home. What else was I supposed to do?
The next day, the pillars had been carved.
It went on like this. First there came windows, rows upon rows of them, with ledges and flourishes. Then, the next tooth showed a hole. Then the next. Archways started to grow steps to lead up to them. Windows became larger, more opulent. And the pain—I never saw the actual carving happen, not even once, but I felt it. I felt every single chip, every last line in them.
I saw dentist after dentist, convinced family to look into my mouth, friends, acquaintances, coworkers, even my boss, but there was always that same goddamned look of pity. The woman is going crazy, their faces seemed to scream, as they even stopped being able to see holes at all. But I am not crazy. This is not phantom pain. I know what is happening to me, and I need it to stop. I am being made a home for something, and I want it out.
My parents have asked me to move back in with them. I will be packing my bags next week, but I'm afraid that they aren't planning to help me with the pregnancy. If my suspicions are true, these bags will be on the floor of a mental hospital very soon.
I am asking you for your help because you have always been on my side, even back when I was fighting for accommodations for my morning sickness. I don't know who else is left to ask. I also don't know what I expect you to do about this anymore, but I need it to be something.
My jaw has started hurting.
