Readerly Exploration #5 – Due October 24, 2022
Bissex Takeaway: Adults need to be aware that the spelling mistakes that children make are not permanent, and it will correct itself through time.
Manyak Takeaway: Teachers should use a variety of activities when teaching phonemic awareness because it teaches students to apply phonemic awareness to everything.
Bissex Nugget: When they start, children use the sounds of letters to spell words that they do not know how to spell, even though it may be incorrect.
Manyak Takeaway: Teachers can use the activities used in the article to teach their students phonemic awareness because they help the students learn how to apply phonemic awareness in different contexts.
Reflection: I decided to reflect on the Bissex article entitled Watching Young Writers. The way that I did this was to look at the references and find an article to read from the citation list. The one I chose was by the same article, and this one was titled Gnys at Wrk: A Child Learns to Write and Read. This one was about the author’s son, and his experience in learning how to read and write. At one point, his son, named Paul, had been trying to talk to Bissex about something, but it did not work well. So, Paul came up with a new way to get his father’s attention. The 5-year-old Paul decided to get rubber letter stamps and write this down on a piece of paper: RUDF (are you deaf?), which successfully got Bissex’s attention. This is exactly what the first article was talking about, how young children think that letters represent words and other letters. However, they will grow out of this as they grow older. When Paul is twelve, he will not be writing the word “are” by just using the letter “r”. With both correction from their parents and teachers and experience writing, children learn which letters make up which words.
