NandhininKarikalan~ Chapter 6
•The New Head of Pandiyas•
The Grand Hall Of the Madurai Palace,
The hall was decorated with flowers and the people came there with a cheerful smile on their faces. The priest was reading the mantras and Vedas. But the state of Nandhini and Amarabhiujhangan was the opposite.
Nandini was being prepared for the coronation ceremony. She was adorned with heavy jewellery and a saree. Her hair was tied up into an Andal bun. Which added more beauty to her face.
But her eyes seemed to be very dull almost as if dead. She was helped by her maids and Urvashi to get prepared for the ceremony. "Akka please smile" told Urvashi cheerfully.
She tried to smile but could. This saddened Urvashi. She told," It's ok akka, try to smile at least during the ceremony". Nandhini just nodded in reply.
Her brother came to call her for the ceremony. Nandhini was looking at herself in the mirror. Urvashi saw Amarabhiujhangan enter and blushed a bit. Amarabhiujhangan noticed it but didn't react.
"Akka everything is prepared, they are waiting for you," told Amarabhiujhangan.
" You go to the hall I will come after a few minutes " replied Nandhini. Her brother looked at Urvashi one last time and went.
Nandhini got up from the seat and turned towards Urvashi. She asked Urvashi to bring the wooden box keep beside the bed.
Urvashi brought it to Nandhini. Nandhini opened it and had two golden rings. The only difference between them was that one hand had the symbol of Cholas, the tiger and the other one had their symbol, the fish.
"Akka whose rings are these," asked Urvashi. Nandhini took both the rings in her hand and stared at them. " These are my rings, Urvashi, one is my  father's gift and the other one is- Nandhini froze and continued " his killers' "
"Who Akka?" Asked Urvashi. Nandhini ignored the question and headed towards the door with the rings. She stopped near the door and asked" Are you going to stand there and ask questions all day ?".
Urvashi bit her lips and hit her head at her silliness. She followed Nandhini.
The trumpets blew as Nandhini entered the hall. Everyone turned to look at her hearing the sound of trumpets. Everyone got up from their seat and greatest her.
Nandhini reached the throne and got the blessings of her grandfather Periyar Pazluvetrayar. " Greetings to everyone gathered in this suspicious hall of the palace. Our eyes are gifted to experience the wonderful coronation of the crown princess Nandhini" he announced.
Nandhini held the rings tightly in her already wounded palm. She turned towards her grandfather, he blessed her by keeping a tilak on her forehead.
She was given her father's shawl. And with the trumpets blowing loudly she was crowned as the Queen of Pandiyan empire.
Her father's sword was given to her. She took the shawl and kept the rings inside and tied it tightly together.
She bought the sword to her right hand and held it tightly. " I the Queen of the Pandiyan empire promise to bring peace and prosperity to the country and won't hesitate to kill anyone who goes against me even if it is my blood. " Nandhini vowed.
Amarabhiujhangan's eyes darkened and Urvashi who was standing beside him smiled lightly at Nandhini's words.
"Hail Queen Nandhini!!" everyone cheered as she was crowned. Nandhini kept a straight face throughout the ceremony. She only spoke with her brother and Urvashi .
" So when are you both going to run away" Nandhini asked Urvashi mockingly as she saw Urvashi looking at Amarabhiujhangan who was talking to his friend, when the guest went to have the lunch .
Urvashi didn't reply. She ran away from there , blushing. Nandhini closed her as he she exhaled. She sat on the throne and took the shawl with the rings in her hand.
She got up and walked towards the exit . Nobody noticed it as everyone was busy eating. She got up on her horse and headed towards the river bank.
She stopped near the bank and got down." Appa, I am the Queen now. I have the power to create and destroy anything in Madurai But as a daughter, I promise you that, I will destroy the  Cholas. This is the least I can do as your daughter. I will make them suffer just  as you did. " Swore Nandhini looking at her reflection in the water.
She opened the cloth and took the rings on her palm. She wore her father's ring on the right and the other one on the left.
She climbed the horse and headed back. Her brother started to search for her by the time she came back. He saw her at the entrance and ran to her " Akka where were you?" Asked Amarabhiujhangan. " I was at the banks" replied Nandhini calmly.
Amarabhiujhangan noticed the rings on her fingers.  He knew that one was their father's " Akka this this tiger symboled ring....." Asked Amarabhiujhangan. " This belongs to the young tiger of the Cholas" Replied Nandhini.
" Why are you wearing it", asked Amarabhiujhangan. " Wearing it reminds me of him killing my father and it is like fuel to the fire in me. " Told Nandhini.
Nandhini didn't wait for him and started walking inside. She asked Amarabhiujhangan to gather a meeting with the ministers. He gathered everyone in her room.
"Arasi, did you call us, " Asked the ministers. " Yes, I have some important matters to talk about, take a seat" told Nandhini. " Nandhini sat as Amarabhiujhangan stood beside her. Nandhini came directly to the point" I am planning to go on a pilgrimage tour ". Told Nandhini. Her announcements shocked everyone.
"But why Arasi, you have been crowned just now and you are planning to leave Madurai." Asked the ministers.
"I may come as soon as possible. I just have a small Unfinished work to complete." Replied Nandhini.
" What is more important than the kingdom?" asked the ministers.
" A duty as a daughter " replied Nandhini. Everyone because silent. They seem to understand what she told.
"But without protection....." Asked Periyar pazluvetrayar hesitantly.
"Will any woman from our kingdom come to accompany me? " Asked Nandhini raising her eyebrows. " My daughter Urvashi will accompany you " announced the Urvashi's father.
" Is she ok with this?" She asked looking at Urvashi. " It is my honour to accompany you akka" told Urvashi who was a bit scared.
" Akka please let me accompany you " asked Amarabhiujhangan as Nandhini got up from her seat. She turned towards him and kept her hand on his shoulders.
" Thambi, you stay here and take care of everything. I know that you are capable of doing it . " Told Nandhini
Amarabhiujhangan accepted her words and didn't protest.
" I will head towards the south tomorrow. The first place I visit would be ' Veera Narayan Perumal temple '." This temple was located at the border of both the kingdoms.

The fact that there is a common kingfisher just outside my window its shimmering blue meeting my eye. What does the kingfisher think when it moves its head towards me. Who else is with him on that silly tree half bare despite the weather. I want to throw everything aside for the kingfisher its face imprinted into my memory for today. By tomorrow I will forget that is the nature of my time. Three mornings ago I swam in an infinity pool picking out white and black butterflies that are endemic to the region. While I swam I looked up at a waterfall on one side and down at the Periyar River on the other. I thought: what a painful thing to experience luxury like this when there is war in the world right now. I did not know their names so I gave them my own. In that time of right now as I moved through the water and looked at the hill mynahs on a tree I could feel inside me that there are people who are dying elsewhere suddenly and violently. I though: I can do "nothing" about it. Is there nothing I can do. It is true that I can hardly walk these days and when I do it fills me with fear and it fills me with guilt because I know that I should not hurt myself in this way. It fills me with upset because I know that I should not have to hurt myself this way but that I must because the world does not hold me like that. I think of the other times that I have been betrayed by the world that had taken the responsibility of caring for me and it fills me with anger. I know that these pains cannot be compared to the pain of war and that fills me with fear further. I am so full inside my body now I experience everything as discomfort. The fact is that the kingfisher is shaking its feathers so that I can see its reddish belly and the two white feathers under its magnificent blue. Sometimes I am overcome with motherhood I want to save everyone and hold them to my chest. Sometimes I am overcome with childhood I am afraid and can't trust anyone. The world swims inside me its rough edges running through my limbs, my eyes. If I could touch the perfect kingfisher and hold it to me forever. If I could stop the infinity of time and hold it to this moment only perched on a silly tree ruffling its beautiful feathers.

28, 29, 30 🍇
Hello there! Thank you for the asks!
28. does your country have a lot of lakes, mountains, rivers? do you have favourites?
Yes, we do! India is a vast country with different geographical landscapes.
My favourite mountain I have seen so far is Stok Kangri, in Ladakh - the shape of the mountain is so pretty (another pretty mountain is Moon Peak that overlooks Dharamshala). I have seen Kanchenjunga from a distance in Sikkim, and it's a gorgeous ice wall. I want to do a trek where I can see the mountain up close.
youtube
My favourite river is Indus in Ladakh, this is where the name "India" comes from. Ganga becomes more and more polluted once it enters plains, but the rivers from the mountains (Alaknanda, Pindar, Dhauliganga, Mandakini, Bhilangana)that form the river Ganga? Outstanding beauties.
youtube
Also dearly love Periyar. :) it's the river you will see from the plane if you fly near Kochi, Kerala. It's a huge river and I was always so scared to try swimming in it because it's humungous. In my mother's teenage years, the river used to flood frequently and her family used to live on the top floor of the house.
Lakes? Hmm. I haven't seen any I like. But maybe backwaters can qualify? Love the Vembanad lake in Allepey.
youtube
I have heard Wular Lake is beautiful but I haven't seen that part of Kashmir.
29. does your region/city have a beef with another place in your country?
Where I currently stay? Yeah. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu regularly beef over sharing of Cauvery river water.
30. do you have people of different nationalities in your family?
Not at the moment, no. I am afraid to say that I am most likely to bring people of different nationality into the family.
I am not from US asks

Kerala from Delhi: A Complete Travel Guide to God’s Own Country
Imagine waking up to mist-covered tea gardens, cruising peacefully through palm-fringed backwaters, and winding down with a seafood dinner by the Arabian Sea. That’s a glimpse of what Kerala offers—a state where nature, culture, and hospitality blend seamlessly.
If you’re planning a Delhi to Kerala trip, this in-depth guide covers everything you need to know—how to reach, what to expect, Kerala trip cost, flight details, and why tour packages can be the smarter option.
Getting from Delhi to Kerala
1. By Flight – Fastest & Easiest
The quickest and most convenient way to travel is by air. Several airlines operate direct Delhi to Kerala flights daily to cities like:

What Makes Kerala So Special?
1. Diverse Landscapes in One State
Few states in India offer such a variety of experiences in such close proximity. In Kerala, you can:

You’ll find temples, mosques, churches, and synagogues standing side by side, symbolizing Kerala’s secular and inclusive spirit.
3. World-Famous Backwaters
The Kerala backwaters are a unique ecosystem of interconnected canals, rivers, and lakes stretching over 900 km. A houseboat ride in Alleppey or Kumarakom offers not just scenic beauty but an insight into rural life, with fishermen casting nets, kids waving from the banks, and coconut palms swaying gently in the breeze.
Houseboats come in all ranges—from budget shared boats to ultra-luxurious private ones with jacuzzis and chefs onboard.

NandhininKarikalan~ Chapter 4
•Nandhini's Vengeance•
Madurai-Palace,
Nandini was left in shock at Periyar Pazluvetrayar's announcement.
The black clouds moved away reviling bright sun rays. The people started to cheer the name of their new ruler.
Even though Nandhini was the crown princess she had never thought that her coronation would happen right after her father's death.
Amarabhiujhangan's blood boiled at the announcement. He left the balcony in anger.
There was a tradition in their family that, no matter what gender, the firstborn always is the hire.So it turned out to be Nandhini.
Nandhini didn't know how to react in this situation. She remained silent and agreed to Pazluvetrayar's decision.
Nandini returned inside and ordered the ministers to arrange for her father's funeral.
Her father's body was decorated with heavy jewellery and his sword which had the Pandya's symbol, fish.
The fish in the sword was designed in a loop. This was kept near his body.
Nandhini was dressed in full white attire. She didn't spill a single tear at his death all that was running in her mind was revenge.
She stared blankly at her father's body as she stood beside it. Her brother was standing on the other side of their father's body.
It took till midnight night for the people to finish their visit and many kings came to see her father's body too.
Her father's body was carried to the river bank and was being prepared to be burnt.
Nandini and her brother followed right behind their father's body, they walked barefoot from the palace to the river bank.
Her father's body was kept at the in-between of the heap of wood and cow dung. His sword was kept on his chest.
Nandhini told her brother to perform funeral rites. He followed her order and did it.
Finally, Nandini was given a bond of fire to light up the body.
She took it in her hand and looked at her father's face and lit the funeral pyre. It started burning just like Nandhini's eyes which were burning in anger.
Everyone present there, bid their farewell after a few minutes. Only her brother remained with her.
After for what felt like hours, the fire died down leaving some unburnt bones and some small chunks of firewood. Nandini and her brother stood there the whole time.
She started walking towards the centre of the remains."Akka don't go your feet will get burned." told Amarabhiujhangan trying to stop his sister from walking forward. But his words were deaf to her ears.
She ignored the hotness and kneeled. Amarabhiujhangan was confused at her actions. 'has she gone mad ?' thought Amarabhiujhangan.
Nandhini kept her hand on the remains and took out her father's sword, Which was red due to the continuous heat supply.
Her hands were burnt they turned red because of the hot metal sword in her has. She bought it close to her face and scanned it. Nandhini opened her mouth and ask "Who" which came out as a whisper.
Nandini got up and walked towards her brother and came dangerously close to his face and repeated "Who". Amarabhiujhangan was scared of his sister's anger.
He didn't reply, instead, he gave her an item wrapped in golden cloth, Nandhini opened it, it was a dagger with dry blood on it Nandhini's breadth stuck in her throat.
The dagger had the symbol of Cholas, the tiger.
Seeing this made her conclude that it was Adhita Karikalan who killed her father. Nandhini stared at the dagger with her burning eyes.
Nandini, finally closed her eyes holding the sword's handle with her left hand and she gave the dagger back to her brother and turned towards the remains, she walked forward and stood at the edge of the bank and used the sword to cut her right palm.
The cut instantly drew blood " I the Crown princess of the Pandiyan empire, daughter of Veera Pandiyan promise to murder the people who helped in murdering my father and the person who murdered him. I promise this in the feet of this River" Nandhini vowed with her palm closed tight and blood flowed through it mixed with the flowing water of the river.
Amarabhiujhangan was shocked. He started at his sister his lips curled up to a smile more likely a smirk. He instantly hid it before his sister turned to face him.
She turned towards her brother and asked in a dangerously low voice " I left you to look at our father because he was ill. What were you doing when he came inside? What were the soldiers outside doing?"
A drop of sweat fell from Amarabhiujhangan's forehead, he replied"I-I was guarding outside father the chamber. He came through the window and killed our father, I went inside hearing father's scream but it was too late, our father was already dead and I saw Karikalan escape from the balcony."
"How did you let him slip out of your hands? " asked Nandini. Amarabhiujhangan gulped and replied, "I ordered the soldiers to catch him but he somehow escaped ".
Nandhini's face hardened, she didn't reply as started walking back towards the palace. Her brother followed right behind her. They didn't speak to each until they reached the palace.
The people were looking at the siblings from their house, through their window. They saw Nandhini with the sword in her hands. Nandhini very well knew that the people were looking at them. But she didn't react.
She reached the main entrance of the palace and the door opened instantly. She was let inside.
A girl came running towards her and hugged her, but she didn't hug her back. It was her friend, Urvashi. She was a chief tenant's daughter. They had been best friends since childhood.
"Akka, I didn't know this would happen to us " she cried hugging Nandini. Nandini stood still. She gestured for her brother to take Urvashi inside.
Nandini headed straight to her chamber. Her brother followed her to the room. "Akka what are you going to do now?" questioned Amarabhiujhangan.
" I won't leave... I won't let a single one of them live, the ones who had a hand in murdering our father " replied Nandhini burning in Vengeance.
"But how? " Asked Amarabhiujhangan.
"By entering their place and finishing them off. Each one should feel hundred times the pain my father would have felt when they killed him " replied Nandini.
" But How? They know that you are the pandiyan princess, how will you enter their place?" asked Amarabhiujhangan.
"Simple, I will just have to have strong royal support from the Chola empire," told Nandhini.
" How will you get a royal's support from Chola Nadu?" Asked Amarabhiujhangan.
Nandini thought for a second and told " I will marry the prince ".
" Who? Arulmozli? But he is not in Chola Nadu he is in Elangai. And he is younger than you too." Asked Amarabhiujhangan confused.
"Who told that I am going to marry Arulmozli?" Asked Nandini as she turned towards the balcony and walked up to it. " Then who?" Asked Amarabhiujhangan as he followed his sister up to the balcony.
"Adhita karikalan " replied Nandhini smirking. Amarabhiujhangan could believe his ears.
" How will he marry you? "Asked Amarabhiujhangan not understanding his sister's plan.
" He wouldn't marry Princess Nandhini, but he will marry the Vaishnava Penn Nandhini" Nandhini answered, smirking.

Why India’s Sanctuaries Matter: From Ecosystem Services to Endangered Species
India is home to some of the most ecologically diverse and biologically rich landscapes in the world. With over 100 national parks and 550+ wildlife sanctuaries, the country’s protected areas serve as much more than tourist destinations—they are critical pillars of environmental balance, wildlife preservation, and climate resilience.
From preserving endangered species like the Bengal tiger and Indian rhinoceros to offering essential ecosystem services such as water purification and carbon storage, animal sanctuaries in India play an irreplaceable role. Pioneering institutions like Vantara, led by Vantara Anant Ambani, are redefining what sanctuaries can achieve by combining cutting-edge healthcare with ecological integrity.
1. Sanctuaries as Strongholds for Endangered Species
One of the most urgent reasons sanctuaries matter is their role in protecting India’s endangered wildlife. Many species are now confined to protected zones due to habitat fragmentation, poaching, and human encroachment.
Key Species Protected in Indian Sanctuaries:
Royal Bengal Tiger – in reserves like Bandhavgarh, Ranthambore, and Sundarbans
Asiatic Lion – exclusive to Gir National Park, Gujarat
One-Horned Rhinoceros – in Kaziranga National Park, Assam
Snow Leopard – in Hemis National Park, Ladakh
Asian Elephant – widely protected across sanctuaries in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha
Sanctuaries offer safe breeding grounds, anti-poaching surveillance, and access to veterinary care that would otherwise be unavailable. For rescued animals suffering from trauma or captivity, rehabilitation centers like Vantara provide structured care, ensuring both recovery and, where possible, rewilding.
2. Vantara: A New Model for Animal Sanctuaries in India
Launched under the vision of Vantara Anant Ambani, the Vantara sanctuary in Jamnagar, Gujarat, is revolutionizing how sanctuaries contribute to wildlife conservation. More than just a refuge, Vantara is:
A wildlife hospital with advanced diagnostic and surgical facilities
A rehabilitation hub for animals rescued from illegal trade and abuse
A research center that merges modern veterinary science with Ayurvedic care
A learning and outreach platform promoting compassion-driven conservation
Vantara is proof that sanctuaries can be scientifically advanced, ethically grounded, and scalable, aligning with India’s biodiversity and sustainable development goals.
3. Sanctuaries Provide Critical Ecosystem Services
Beyond species conservation, sanctuaries deliver ecosystem services that benefit both wildlife and people. These include:
a) Water Regulation and Purification
Forests and wetlands within sanctuaries help:
Recharge groundwater
Filter pollutants
Prevent soil erosion
Example: The Western Ghats sanctuaries—such as Periyar and Silent Valley—feed river systems that supply water to millions.
b) Carbon Sequestration
Dense forests in reserves like Kanha and Corbett act as carbon sinks, absorbing atmospheric CO₂ and mitigating climate change.
c) Pollination and Seed Dispersal
Sanctuaries protect bees, butterflies, birds, and fruit-eating mammals that are essential for agricultural productivity and forest regeneration.
d) Climate Buffering
Sanctuaries maintain microclimates that reduce local temperature extremes, buffer storms, and support resilience against drought and floods.
4. Sanctuaries and Human-Wildlife Coexistence
Contrary to the belief that sanctuaries are isolated from people, many act as models for coexistence, especially through:
Eco-development programs that create livelihood opportunities
Community-led conservation (e.g., forest patrols, eco-tourism)
Education and awareness about the value of biodiversity
Some sanctuaries, like those in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, are inhabited by indigenous communities whose sustainable lifestyles enhance conservation outcomes.
Vantara, too, engages local stakeholders by offering educational programs, rescue training, and employment, ensuring that conservation is inclusive and sustainable.
5. Sanctuaries as Wildlife Healthcare Centers
Sanctuaries today go beyond protection—they are also centers for wildlife healthcare and trauma recovery.
Many animals arrive in sanctuaries after:
Being trapped in poaching snares
Suffering from dehydration or starvation
Being illegally kept as pets or performers
Escaping habitat destruction
Vantara stands out as India’s most advanced wildlife medical facility, offering:
ICUs and surgical theatres for large mammals and reptiles
Ayurvedic healing for chronic conditions
Mobile ambulances for remote rescues
Nutrition and enrichment programs for psychological recovery
This focus on healthcare, dignity, and holistic healing ensures that sanctuaries serve as both safe havens and recovery institutions.
6. Biodiversity Hotspots and Scientific Research
Sanctuaries often serve as biodiversity laboratories, where scientists can monitor:
Species population trends
Migration patterns
Zoonotic disease risks
Climate change impacts on flora and fauna
India’s National Wildlife Action Plan (2017–2031) encourages sanctuaries to become centers of data-driven conservation—a vision fulfilled by Vantara’s on-site research labs and data sharing protocols.
7. Sanctuary Tourism and Its Economic Impact
Wildlife tourism, when managed responsibly, can:
Generate income for local communities
Fund sanctuary maintenance
Support conservation awareness
Reduce pressure on exploitative practices like hunting or logging
India’s top sanctuaries—Corbett, Kaziranga, and Gir—draw thousands of tourists annually, contributing to state and national economies. Vantara, while not a tourist park, offers educational experiences and virtual learning modules, broadening its reach without compromising animal welfare.
8. Sanctuaries Support National and Global Conservation Goals
India’s sanctuary network helps fulfill:
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Life on Land, Climate Action, and Clean Water
Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) goals
CITES obligations on endangered species protection
National Biodiversity Action Plan targets
With institutions like Vantara leading the way, India’s sanctuaries are moving beyond protection into impactful conservation, education, and healthcare delivery.
Final Thoughts
Animal sanctuaries in India are not just safe spaces for wildlife—they are lifelines for ecosystems, educational platforms, and centers of scientific innovation. With increasing threats to biodiversity, their importance only grows.
Through groundbreaking models like Vantara, driven by the visionary leadership of Vantara Anant Ambani, India is showing how sanctuaries can evolve to meet the demands of the 21st century: technologically advanced, compassion-led, and ecologically inclusive.
If India’s natural heritage is to survive and thrive, it will be because its sanctuaries stood strong—not just as boundaries of protection, but as beacons of healing and coexistence.

A Nature Lover’s Guide to the Best Birdwatching Resorts by the River in Kerala
Kerala, often referred to as “God’s Own Country,” is not just a haven for backwater cruises and spice-scented hillsides; it’s also a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. With its lush greenery, tranquil rivers, and rich biodiversity, Kerala offers an exceptional setting for birdwatching, especially along its scenic riversides. For those who yearn to wake up to the chirping of rare birds and spend their days exploring unspoiled landscapes, choosing the right riverside resort can transform a simple getaway into a soulful experience.
Here’s a comprehensive guide to the best birdwatching resorts by the river in Kerala — where nature, luxury, and wildlife beautifully intertwine.
Why Birdwatching in Kerala?
Kerala’s diverse ecosystems—from coastal lagoons and backwaters to moist deciduous forests and wetlands—make it a hotspot for avian life. The state boasts over 500 recorded bird species, including endemics like the Malabar Grey Hornbill, White-bellied Treepie, and the Nilgiri Wood Pigeon. Several migratory birds from Siberia, Central Asia, and the Himalayas also visit Kerala during the winter season.
For birdwatchers, this means an opportunity to spot a variety of species within a relatively compact region—especially near rivers and forest fringes where many birds feed, nest, or roost.
Thattekad – The Birdwatching Capital of Kerala
No birdwatching guide to Kerala is complete without mentioning Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, also known as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. Located on the banks of the Periyar River, Thattekad is one of the richest bird habitats in peninsular India. Named after the renowned ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali, this sanctuary is home to over 300 species of birds, making it a prime destination for ornithologists and eco-tourists alike.
Surrounding this sanctuary are a handful of eco-conscious, riverside resorts that offer not just a place to stay, but an immersive nature experience.
What to Look for in a Birdwatching Resort
When selecting a birdwatching resort, especially by the river, look for these key features:
Proximity to wildlife sanctuaries or forest reserves
Natural, eco-friendly surroundings (minimal interference from traffic or city noise)
Guided birdwatching tours led by knowledgeable naturalists
Accommodation that blends into the natural environment (like wooden cottages or villas)
Amenities for relaxation—after all, it’s not just about birdwatching but enjoying nature at your own pace

The property is surrounded by dense greenery and frequented by a variety of native and migratory birds, giving guests a chance to spot species right from the comfort of their villa or the riverside deck.
Rainforest Retreats, Athirapally Located near the iconic Athirapally Waterfalls, these retreats offer sweeping river views and dense forest surroundings. While not exclusively a birdwatching resort, the area is rich in biodiversity and offers excellent opportunities for bird sightings, particularly hornbills and forest birds.
Parambikulam River Lodges Though slightly off the mainstream tourist track, Parambikulam offers raw, untouched natural beauty and riverside accommodations inside the Tiger Reserve. The forest department-managed lodges are basic but offer incredible access to wildlife and birding trails.
Riverine Retreats, Kumarakom Closer to the Vembanad Lake, Kumarakom is another hotspot for bird lovers. The Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary lies on the eastern banks of the lake and is home to waterfowl, herons, and Siberian storks during migratory seasons. Several river and lake-facing resorts here offer kayaking, guided nature walks, and peaceful sunset views.
When to Visit

Wildlife Photography in Indian Reserves: A Responsible Guide
India's wildlife sanctuaries are a paradise for photographers — offering once-in-a-lifetime chances to capture majestic tigers, elusive leopards, soaring eagles, and rare rhinos in their natural glory. But with this privilege comes responsibility. Wildlife photography isn’t just about getting the perfect shot — it’s about respecting the wilderness and preserving the moment for future generations.
As wildlife conservation evolves, sanctuaries like Vantara, founded by Vantara Anant Ambani, highlight the importance of ethics in every interaction with animals — a lesson photographers can take to heart.
📸 1. Know Before You Go: Choose the Right Reserve
India offers a wide range of habitats:
Ranthambore: Great for close-up tiger shots amid ruins and lakes
Kaziranga: Perfect for photographing one-horned rhinos in grasslands
Corbett: Dense forests, river valleys, and excellent birding
Gir: The only place to capture Asiatic lions in the wild
Silent Valley & Periyar: Ideal for capturing rich, lesser-known biodiversity
Each park has its own safari rules, zones, and entry limitations, so research beforehand for optimal light, sightings, and permits.
📷 2. Follow the Golden Rules of Ethical Wildlife Photography
True wildlife photography means capturing animals without disturbing them. Here’s how:
Keep a respectful distance: Use zoom lenses instead of moving closer
Stay quiet and patient: Sudden noise or movement stresses animals
Never bait or call animals: It disrupts natural behavior and puts them at risk
Obey park guides and zone rules: They’re there for your and the animals’ safety
Avoid flash photography: It startles nocturnal or sensitive species
Leave no trace: Take nothing but photos, leave nothing but respect
🛡️ 3. Respect Animal Welfare — On and Off the Field
While national parks protect animals in the wild, wildlife sanctuaries like Vantara provide care for rescued, injured, and trafficked animals.
Vantara Anant Ambani’s initiative embodies responsible wildlife engagement — where animals are treated with dignity, not used as props. This approach is vital in both sanctuaries and photography.
Photographers must avoid unethical photo ops such as:
Captive animals posed for selfies
Performances or unnatural behavior
Dens or nests where young animals may be disturbed
🐾 4. Capture Conservation, Not Just Creatures
Use your lens to tell stories of conservation:
Showcase human-wildlife coexistence
Highlight habitat diversity and fragility
Partner with ethical sanctuaries like Vantara to document real rescue stories
Share behind-the-scenes efforts like anti-poaching patrols, forest ranger work, or animal rehabilitation
Photos that inspire compassion and awareness are more powerful than any close-up.
🧭 5. Travel Light, But Travel Smart
Carry telephoto lenses (300mm+ recommended) for wildlife at a distance
Pack silent, weather-proof gear — nature is unpredictable
Use tripods or bean bags for stability, especially in jeep safaris
Back up images safely and often
Always prioritize animal welfare over image perfection
🏁 Conclusion: A Shot Worth Saving
Wildlife photography in Indian reserves is more than a hobby — it’s a chance to be an ambassador for nature. When done with respect, patience, and ethics, every image becomes a voice for the voiceless.
Let sanctuaries like Vantara, with their commitment to animal dignity and ethical care, be a reminder: the most powerful photographs are the ones that protect what they portray.
