out of curiosity, are croagunk/toxicroak classified as inherently dangerous pokemon?
they are indeed! it's partly because of their behavior (they're pretty aggressive and are known to ambush perceived threats) and partly because of the potency of their poison post-evolution (even trace amounts of their poison can kill a grown human). to be honest i don't super love that croagunk is such a common mascot, because people end up getting them as pets and then realizing they aren't equipped to care for a pokemon like that.
i'm actually working with a toxicroak for the final exam i'm giving to my students in the class on handling dangerous pokemon that i'm teaching this term! she's been trained specifically for assessing rangers in how well they read pokemon body language. her job is to fake being angry, basically. my students will have to assess me on how well i "handle" a scripted interaction with her. and she does her job very well- i had a practice session with her today and it was hard to fight my instinct to back off when she reacted to me!

DEAD POET SOCIETY'S RICHARD CAMERON: A Character Analysis

Disclaimer: Dead Poets Society is my current hyperfixation, this is just me infodumping and sharing some opinions on Cameron as he is a problematic character.
This is all just for fun don't take any of this too seriously!
Who is Richard Cameron?
Richard Cameron is a character in Peter Weir's 1989 film Dead Poets Society. He is most commonly referred to by his last name 'Cameron'. He is a supporting character, turned antagonist in the film.
Cameron is the straight A, teacher's pet type of the group. He was a member of debate club, Welton Society Candidates, crew team, forensics club, service club, and honour council. He is mentioned to have the most achievement pins out of all the Poets. Cameron joins the Dead Poets Society begrudgingly.
He is very pragmatic and rule-abiding. He is often shown hesitating to join in Mr. Keating's teachings as well as his friends own infringement of Welton's expectations. Cameron follows the school's rigid expectation and is meant to be a stark contrast against his roommate, Charlie Dalton.
Cameron's Betrayal
Cameron is most well known for his 'betrayal' of the Dead Poets Society at the end of the film. After Neil's death, Cameron misses a meeting that Meeks told him about twice. While missing this meeting, he goes to Principal Nolan and tells him all the details about the Dead Poets Society meetings and what had occurred. Afterwards, comes his infamous argument with Charlie Dalton which ends with him getting hit in the face.
Cameron Post-Betrayal
After Cameron's betrayal, he is seen very tense in the class formerly taught by Mr. Keating, now taught by Mr. Nolan. He answers every question Nolan asks, and tells him the pages of their poetry books have been ripped out and that they 'skipped around' the chapters. Cameron is the only member of the Dead Poets Society that doesn't stand for the 'O Captain, my captain!' scene
Gale Hansen's Post Canon
In Gale Hansen's Post-Canon script Welton, Cameron takes over as headmaster of Welton Academy and hires Charlie as a teacher.
The Unofficial Types of Richard Cameron percievers
I have read just about everything I can find about Richard Cameron, every wiki, every Tumblr post, every comment, enough to formulate an opinion on him and to classify the people who watched Dead Poets Society and how they feel about Cameron.
Cameron Enjoyers - Richard Cameron enjoyers are someone who watched/read Dead Poets Society and like Cameron and his character. They enjoy his personality and his dynamic with the other boys despite his decision at the end of the film
Cameron Defenders - Richard Cameron defenders are someone who watched/read Dead Poets Society and defend Cameron's actions at the end of the movie (i.e saying how his treatment of his friends was okay and warranted given the situation)
Cameron Apologists - Richard Cameron apologists are someone who watched/read Dead Poets Society and recognize the negative impact of Cameron's actions at the end of the movie but sympathize with his decision due to the pressures of the situation he was in (i.e saying his decision wasn't okay but recognize the pressures he was under and how he thought the decision was right)
This is just how I classify people and their opinions on Dead Poets Society! Don't take it too seriously, I just thought people's perceptions on his character was interesting!
My Opinions, Perceptions and End Thoughts
With all my research and cramming about Dead Poets Society, I have found myself identifying as a Cameron apologist. In no means do I like Cameron's character, but then again he isn't my least favourite (Knox is, but I'll explain that in my character analysis of him).
I see Cameron's character as a representation of isolation, conformity and fear. He's the only one who is afraid to rebel, to 'carpe diem' and to go against the grain. Cameron is also the only Poet not particularly close to anyone else Neil has Charlie and Todd, Charlie has Knox and Neil, Pitts and Meeks have each other, whereas Cameron continues to try to fit in (i.e making fun of Todd, poking fun at Charlie) but never succeeds, therefore representing isolation.
I perceive Cameron's decision as a decision made out of fear. I see his decision as one made in an attempt to 'save his friends'

This is all personal opinion and preference. Please do not take offense if this is your thing. This is just a rant from someone who doesn’t understand.
I don’t get Yanderes. I don’t like yanderes. More power to those who do, not going to say since I don’t like them you can’t, but how is this a thing?
The red flags are numerous! In many cases these include non con manipulation, gaslighting, degradation, condescension, conditioning, mental physical and emotional abuse, kidnapping, literal murder of family and friends!! If it’s a consensual thing, have at it, but a lot of them aren’t or don’t start that way.
I only watched Redacted’s Ivan playlist because it ties into Freelancer’s playlist. I have watched Regulas (however it’s spelled) and Caller because his content usually ends up intertwining with others. But they made me so uncomfortable and sometimes even made me sick. (Not literally)
I understand wanting someone who loves you immensely, but (and this is extreme cases) to stalk, put cameras in your home, murdering someone for having a conversation, even going so far as to starve, harm, and/or threaten the person they claim to love is not love. It is harassment, abuse, and MURDER!
Esme Jones has a really good script that I listen to through AJ Audio called Black Heart. It is classified as Yandere and it is, but the thing is, and spoiler alert if you would rather listen without knowing, once the king (speaker) realizes how bad he was to (listener) once a good person (using it loosely because he also drugged and kidnapped them, but it ended up being a good thing), he started trying to be a good person to deserve them. Only to have it turn out there was a legitimate reason for their king’s toxic behavior. (Please go listen to this story it has amazing plot twists and Siren’s Son!)
Again major spoiler for those who don’t want to know, it will only be this one paragraph so if you skip the next paragraph, there will be no spoilers after.
It even ends with a bipoly marriage with 2 men and listener (GN) with the occasional inclusion of Juno (not even going to try to explain Juno). They even have a pet bear!
Spoilers over
Yandere rant over. There really is no point to this. Apparently, yanderes is one of the most popular genres in asmr rp. Again these are just my opinions from someone who doesn't understand . Everyone has things they like and don’t like, this just happens to be mine.

Unasked for Questions/Opinions About A Random Thing: Hybrids
I struggled with some motivation this week, and I wanted to post something...
So we have this thing.
This may or may not become a series in which, as the title says, I share opinions and questions about things that no one asked for. But only when I have no motivation to answer asks or work on other projects. These aren't meant to be any kind of attack or judgement, its all in good fun. And I don't expect much to come from it..
Anyways on to the backstory for the topic of Hybrids!
This all started because my motivation was in the dirt and I was tired of seeing all the Chat-Ai bot commercials. So, I did what anyone would do, I go two of the apps and played around to see if it could motivate me, and it did. Just to play around more.
Looking through as I played around, I tried a few different ones, and even made my own, but the hybrid models left me with questions and opinions that caused me to reflect on the character type/trope/what ever other thing it can be classified as.
And to be honest, I have read quite a few hybrid fanfics and original stories so I wasn't going in blind, but just realize some things.
And if you have any feed back or things to add, feel free to. I would like to see where this goes or if it gives people ideas.
Of if you have any works that could fit/answer these questions please send them my way. I would love to read them.
Why aren't there groomers? Like the hybrid equivalent of dog groomers, I get if they society has hybrids as equals to people, but in the case they are pets, it should be something to include. Especially if the hair on their head is fur. It acts different and different species have different needs. Like if its a GSD, you're gonna want him to be deshed. Because your poor shower drain if you don't. Or it's a cute set up for a meet-cute. Either way.
Services, a lot of stories take place at home, a shelter, a zoo/aquarium, labs or in the wild. Where's the daycare equivalent, like you could do a basic kennel situation with some playrooms or go EXTREME! By having a large center that's like an amusement park style daycare with different areas for different things; hunting, playing, sleeping, eating, mating if your feeling spicy. Then make them as fancy as you want. What is they also were boarding facilities too and the hybrids/owners could customize their experience to what the animal side required? What if it was ran by a hybrid in secret, one that didn't like humans and all the employees were instructed that there was a 100% owner compliance rule. That once the human owner was behind a certain point anything their hybrid said went? And what about pet sitting, training? How does those come into play? I know many stories do mating as their own industry, but what other type of ways can it be done?
Are they treated by a vet? But branched like exotic animals where it is considered a specialty, with some vets having no training to help them? Or is it a human doctor with some veterinary training? Do they go to the Human ER or Vet ER? What about dental care, if we worry about wisdom teeth, what about them?
How are they categorized? Like at what point is a hybrid considered livestock animal, work animal, a pet/companion, an exotic or wild life? Is it the animal side of them or is it their personality? Do you need any type of license for specific groups? What about owning the more wild ones? Where is the law in this?
Why do we write hybrids as those that enjoy being pets? I get some would, but like, personally, I would struggle with someone else having that level of control over me, even if I did have animal like tendencies and instincts. There has to be one, where the hybrid is grumpy and over being seen as a pet, even if their human sees them as a mate or friend. Like what if he tries to flip the script and make his owner/human the pet and take care of them? What if there was a law to allow them to present in court that they deserve to be seen as a person? What happens if granted and what happens to the human they leave behind? And what happens if they flip the script of authority legally rather than just forcing submission and house arrest?
Can they be service animals? If so, do they get fancy vests and badges? More freedom to act and even speak for their owner if they are seen as a pet in their society. Or is seen as equal in the work of fiction, is it like a different type of nurse? Like a job only they can fill and work in shifts? What if a blind person has a hybrid as their guide, do they switch every 8-12 hours? Just emailing where the blind person is and hand off the person like a clock in ticket?
Would they have to segregate places? Because imagine you have an cat allergy and a hybrid feline sits by you. Then the MC has an allergic reaction of varying degrees, wouldn't it be safer if your separate? What happens if a hybrid is allergic to a human? Or are they hypoallergenic?
So, if a hybrid is mixed with livestock. Are they gonna be eaten!? Like if its a pig-girl or cow-boy are they being fatten up and turned to steak? Or is it other things they are used for? Like cows for milk, pigs for truffle hunting and garden care (not gonna lie, I had to google for the pigs.)?
That's all I have. I would be curious to see the answers, but no pressure.
I may or may not use these for projects latter on (I can already see where I can use these with my characters). But it was fun to write these out.
Feel free to reblog, add thoughts, use for ideas and whatever.
Have fun!
Thanks for reading my madness of questions no one asked for.

Extreme Prejudice
I was going to the most confusing place in the world and I didn’t even know it yet. Way down Azura’s Coast, to the end of the Telvanni isles, the path like roots that led straight to Therana. It was no accident that I got to be the caretaker of the wizard lord Therana’s clothing any more than being back in Sadrith Mora was an accident. There is no way to tell my own story, without telling a bit of hers.
The looming fungal tower of Tel Branora rose out of the sea like a great living lighthouse. Yet this beacon did not signal safety, but rather chaos. It was easy enough to ascend given my magical talents, yet comprehending what I found inside was more challenging.
Scamps in various states of life and death were strewn about the chambers. Large kwama eggs were arranged in patterns, stuck to walls, and rolled across the floor endlessly. A wooden table hosted a perfect circle of eggs around its perimeter. Curiously, I was unable to grasp these eggs, both physically and mentally. The guards seemed to not know where they were posted, and — by my assumption — no one here was actually in charge.
A bewildered-looking Bosmer wandered the halls, and approached me as though he wanted me to ask him a question. I did.
“Could I..speak with Lady Therana?”
“Hey, mer, you don’t talk to the Lady. You listen to her. She’s enlarged my mind. She’s a poet mage in the classic sense. Sometimes she’ll…well, I’ll say ‘hello’ to her, and she’ll just float right by. She won’t even notice. Suddenly she’ll grab you, throw you in a corner with telekinesis and she’ll say ‘did you know that SPY is the first sound in SPIDER?’ I mean I’m not, I can’t, I’m a little mer. I’m a little mer and she’s a GREAT mer! I should’ve been a set of glossy legs skittering across floors of silent eggs…”
He glanced up a levitation shaft before losing his balance and falling onto an egg.
“No, no, no, no, no, no…It should’ve been me. This isn’t how the egg is supposed to crack, mer.
***
Therana, the Telvanni lord, was at once imposing and unassuming. Her chambers were simple, yet chaotic. A small fireplace consumed a pile of books while a naked Khajiit watched in silence.
Therana brushed her robes back with her hands, and then spoke before I could introduce myself.
“Did they say, Trerayna, why they want you to terminate my command?”
“I… beg your pardon,” I asked, attempting to not appear confused.
“Classified, is it? They didn’t tell you?”
“They told me you requested new clothes, and that your methods were… unpredictable.”
“Are my methods unpredictable?” She blinked in a way that seemed to make noise. Behind us, an egg casually rolled down the hall towards the levitation shaft. Moments later, the Bosmer began wailing again.
“I don’t see any methods at all, my Lady.”
“Are you an assassin? Are you here to feed the spiders?”
“I’m a mage and Telvanni Retainer, and I’m looking for answers.”
Therana grasped the wrapped clothing from my hands via telekinesis and flung them onto the ground by the Khajiit. His pupils widened.
“Answers? I have answers for you. Did I say answers? I meant eggs. Same thing really. Good girls can’t have spiders for pets, Therana. Good girls can’t answer questions with eggs, Therana. Thats what they said, and now they’re gone.”
I may appear unsound for not walking out of Tel Branora immediately. But what I was beginning to understand, and what I believe few others do, is that the occupants of this reality live and act according to unseen scripts. It was clear to me from the start that Lady Therana possessed no such script. This is why I did not walk out, and this is why I took the path I did from this point onward.
“I will not say these things, Lady Therana,” I said barely above a whisper. “I do want answers.”
“Good. Wait! You’re not that fool, Trerayna Dalen, are you? She’s waiting outside to kill me. I won’t go out there anyway, so it is no problem. My guard captain won’t stop talking about it though. He is a too-tall mer, like you. He’s covered in armor, but you’ll see him on account of him being too tall. Perhaps you can help him deal with his problem. Then perhaps we can talk as friends-who-are-spiders talk to their spider friends.”
I bowed my head slightly, and as I began to withdraw from the room, Therana called out to me once more.
“Have you seen my Cat? My Ra’Zahr?”
The Khajiit behind her unsuccessfully attempted to become invisible.

Lilith had left a rather large, suspiciously well-wrapped box onto Castiel’s desk. What an unusual thing for Lilith to do, she never gifted things, never did things out of the good of her heart. Inside, nestled in fine black velvet, was an elaborate, glass-paneled ant farm—complete with tiny tunnels, miniature landscapes, and even a quaint little castle in the center with a sign on top of where it said "Castiels Castle". Alongside it sat a neatly folded note, scrawled in her signature elegant script:
"Dearest Castiel,
Because I am thoughtful and generous and—most importantly—because I saw it and thought of you. I have bestowed upon you the sacred duty of raising these creatures in my absence. Feed them, nurture them, help them grow big and strong. One day, when they are fat and plentiful, I shall return to reap what is mine for a new potion recipe. Do not get attached. They are not pets. They are a resource. Don't you dare to name them.
Much love, Lilith."
P.S. The beetles arrive next week. Prepare accordingly.
CASTIEL IS NOT USED TO RECEIVING GIFTS. Truth be told, when he got his first one from Dean — the mixtape with his favorite Led Zeppelin songs — he had assumed he'd need to give it back. He's learned since then, of course, but when you don't have a birthday and you're not around during holidays like Christmas, you usually don't receive presents. So, you can imagine his surprise mixed with joy upon finding the box. And his joy only grows when he unwraps the gift and finds a little ant farm inside. The insects are already quite busy, looking for food or digging new tunnels. Castiel gingerly puts the farm down and then opens the enclosed letter.
Oh, how quickly a smile can freeze! Castiel's eyes flicker from the paper to the ants and back. "To say it in Dean's words," he says out loud, "bite me."
Farm and angel disappear from the room. Where to, you might ask? Well, it's not hard to classify the ant species Lilith got him, and it's even easier to find a perfect little spot in some remote forest that has everything the little insects want. Castiel breaks the glass and releases them into the wild. He doesn't mind raising and then killing domestic livestock because it's for survival. But squishing them for poison? No. Not with Castiel.

Launch a Profitable Classifieds Business in Turkey with Smart AI-powered Online Classified Software
Turkey's digital landscape is booming, with a mobile-first population hungry for innovative solutions.
This trend presents a golden opportunity for entrepreneurs, particularly those with a vision beyond the traditional classifieds model.
While basic listing platforms exist, leveraging AI-powered online classified software can cause newcomers to effectively thrive in this zestful market.
This blog delves deeper than the usual platitudes.
It offers insights specifically made for the Turkish entrepreneur who is keen on starting a classified business in this region.
Here, we'll explore the Turkish current market, why to adopt Artificial intelligence, and how to develop a classified platform that serves not just listings, but also user intent and experience.

Let’s Discuss About the Turkish Classifieds Landscape
The Turkish market presents distinct advantages.
E-commerce penetration is high in this region, with strong mobile adoption and a growing comfort with online transactions.
However, existing classified platforms often lack:
Localization
Generic, western-developed classified platforms might not accurately fulfill the specific needs and cultural nuances of Turkish users.
Verticalization
Broad, all-encompassing platforms struggle to offer a deep, curated experience for specialized categories.
Monetization Beyond Listings
Relying on the basic listing fees alone is not a sustainable business model. A successful platform must have multiple revenue streams.
This is where AI steps in, empowering you to create a platform that addresses these shortcomings.
The AI Advantage: Personalization, Prediction, and Power
AI is not just a buzzword; it's a transformative tool. Here's how it will elevate your classifieds platform:
Hyper-Personalization
Leverage AI into your classified script to personalize user journeys.
Recommend relevant listings based on browsing behavior, location, and purchase history.
Imagine a used car buyer seeing financing options and local mechanic reviews alongside car listings.
It creates a more engaging and efficient experience.
Predictive Search
Classified ads script’s AI algorithms can anticipate user needs, suggesting relevant searches before they're even typed.
This streamlines the process for users with specific but unarticulated desires.
For example, someone searching for an apartment might be interested in nearby schools or pet-friendly policies, even if they haven't explicitly included these in their search. AI can predict and surface these options.
Diligent Pricing
Implement AI-powered pricing algorithms that adjust listing fees based on factors like category, location, and market demand.
This creates a fairer system for both buyers and sellers, maximizing value for everyone.
These are AI-charged features you can implement in your classified software.
Integrating AI systems will drastically simplify the approach of users buying and selling products on your platform. It will attract more users.
The more users use your platform, the better your revenue will be.
Building Your AI-powered Classifieds Software: A Roadmap for Success
Now that you have understood the power of AI, here's a roadmap to get you started:
Pinpoint Your Niche
Don't be a generic platform.
Focus on a specific vertical market where you can offer a deeply curated experience.
For example, focus on promoting luxury goods, agricultural equipment, or collectible items.
Choose the Right AI Tools
Several AI-as-a-Service (AaaS) platforms offer pre-built AI solutions for tasks like image recognition, fraud detection, and recommendation engines.
Research and choose tools that align with your specific needs.
Prioritize Data Security and User Privacy
As you collect user data for AI applications, ensure robust security measures are in place.
Be transparent about data collection and usage. Build trust with your user base.
Just Remember: Building a successful classified platform takes time and continuous improvement. Gather user feedback, iterate on your AI models, and always adapt to changing market trends.
For more guidance on developing a classified platform, click here!
The Takeaway
By using AI the smart way, you can launch your own classified ad script in Turkey that's more than just listings.
It'll be a thriving community where people connect, discover, and trust each other.
Now that's a marketplace worth building.

@nonegenderleftpain
For a layman’s look, I’m reading through Whipping Girl a chapter at a time on my channel. But my biggest takeaways so far reading it are:
she sees nonbinary identities as a “partial expression of one’s subconscious sex” because she went from cis to cross dressing to nonbinary to binary trans.
she believes trans men have an easier time transitioning because psychiatry has been male dominated for ages and thus trans men don’t have to follow a script. Our differing maleness is accepted but trans women have to all look the same.
she thinks when people automatically gender someone it’s an “active process,” and not a subconscious one that needs to be unlearned.
She hates the movie Transamerica because it shows a trans woman “performing” excessive femininity despite it coming out after Legally Blonde, when there was a pushback on the idea that pink + smarts didn’t mix. It’s actually a really good movie and super progressive for its time and part of why I’m still reading this book. This is just a pet peeve of mine tbh but you should watch the movie. It doesn’t shy away from some of the ugliness that comes with transitioning and trying to shove your old self in a box.
She’s a white, middle class, college educated woman who decided to use the works of a white, middle class, college educated man to try and talking about nonWestern, nonwhite gender identities and claim “third genders” are really just trans women but Western sociologists refuse to classify them as such.

random headcanons: mundane edition.
liz hates the summer. however, she does like the beach to lay out and be lazy in the sun.
zatanna loves to collect rare crystals and give it to her occult friends as little gifts. these crystals are real and they do hold powerful energy, unlike the novelty crystals that people sell.
rogue loves to go clubbing. after she was ‘fixed’ with her abilities (and i use that term loosely), she dragged kitty, kurt and bobby all around new york looking for a places to dance the night away.
gwen plays drums and is learning guitar from mj. she takes inspiration from jo.ey jo.rdison and da.ve gro.hl, those are her idols in terms of drumming.
felicia owns three cats, two siamese (ruby and obi) and one black cat (diamond). she gives them the best food and babies them like they’re her kids.
it’s been said before but elektra doesn’t like roses. she thinks they’re a cheap flower to buy and there’s no consideration into getting them. she really loves orchids though.
jessica use to write poetry when she was younger, well into high school and sometimes when she’s not working on a case to get her mind off. it’s one of her few creative outlets.
lorna watches a lot of trashy television. she’s also into conspiracy documentaries, she finds them to be hilarious.
amora only visits midgard quietly if it’s fashion week and to stay in beautiful countries for a period of time. she thinks of the planet as a vacation spot.
kate is the karaoke queen. she can carry a good note and she’s classified as an alto. her parents took her to music classes, focusing on chorus when she was a child.
helena listens to em.inem, sli.pknot and hale.storm. those are her favorites to listen to when she’s training.
raven gets up early every morning to meditate. she does this to keep her powers in balance, one of the many teachings she’s learned during her time on azarath. her cat, dexter loves to join her on her shoulders.
dana only takes up the mantle of batwoman when terry goes out of commission or he’s needed elsewhere besides gotham city.
ivy grows fond of harley’s pets but she does not like the fact that they attempt to eat her plants. she’s banished them from her greenhouses until they’re trained to be restrictive.
manson’s guilty pleasure is listening to nsync. as soon as tucker found out about it and blabbed to danny, it’s been a on going joke between the two of them against her. she figures it’s a small victory against beating them both at video games.
yennefer enjoys reading scripts in her spare time. it’s the only part of her life she values the more, a little less than excelling in magic.
lily has snuck out of hogwarts more times than she claims. she has gotten much better at stealth, she’s never regretted doing it. she can thank sirius for her rebellious streak.
jesse does not sleep well so she takes suppressants to help her. she still gets up at five in the morning to run all throughout central park until she needs to report for duty and run the oldest house.
jyn is not good at taking care of herself medically. she’s terrible at stitching herself up and looks to cassian for extra help.
mara still has nightmares about her days with the empire. there are days where she questions her own morality and even her connection to the light of the force rather than the dark. she will always stand by her claim of being a grey jedi.
merrin hates to be left alone. she has a fear that she’ll be left behind again to fend for herself. while she tends to act like she doesn’t like being consumed, she’ll always want to be close by and give the other person their space.
jade doesn’t really know how technology in the modern world works. she eventually learns how to but you can’t give her an iphone and expect her to make a phone call. she’s more likely to break it apart to understand it from the inside.
eden eventually settles down on dantooine after the war is over so she can raise her daughter properly. she vowed to not let warfare get in the way of her raising tyla and asked her brother eron to watch over her in case something were to happen.
sersi has grown to explore her personality outside of the empire once she and her master, tara alayne, escape. she’s much more bubbly and observant, her stoic outlook is replaced with curiosity and light. she also reprograms id-9 to operate on freewill instead of the empire’s protocol.

My Obnoxiously Long Analysis of Danny Torrance and Richie Tozier
I have thought about this particular analysis for a while, and this has been a really fun thing to write, but at the same time, I feel like I am missing a large part of the story because I am struggling to figure out why? I know these characters are connected in some way, that part is obvious, but I am unsure of the significance. Why are these two characters so similar yet so different? This isn’t a case of the Stephen King self-insert where every male lead is an author but grew up in a weird place and lost a family member that causes him great distress even in his adult life (looking at you, Bill Denbrough and Gordie LaChance). The case of these two characters is different, as their personalities and lives are so different as to not have them be carbon-copies of each other, but at the same time they share so many traits and they have this connection that is interesting to me (though not as interesting anymore, thank you so much, Mike Flanagan).
First, I will talk about the gifs, since I think that’s probably the best place to begin. That quote by Dick Hallorann is so, so interesting to me because it directly relates back to It. Towards the end of the book, Richie recalls a very distinct moment when Bill killed a mosquito that was on the back of Richie’s neck, and he talks a bit about it and how bugs were often drawn to them (though he uses pheromones as an example). Leeches are also mentioned quite descriptively in It as well, them being Patrick Hockstetter’s fear and what kills him in the book. The other gifs are mainly a visual comparison, as I think that the way those two moments were carried out was pretty interesting. I was going to make another visual comparison with the weird cloudy eye effect that both films utilize very well, but that part in It: Chapter Two with Richie does make me pretty uncomfortable. In both movies, essentially, characters’ eyes get clouded over when they get into someone else’s head: Danny Torrance does this to Rose the Hat, while It does it to Richie.
To start off, both Richie and Danny grew up as only children in a family where they had close relationships with their parents despite them having a hard time understanding their children. They both felt closer to their mothers, as their fathers were often busy with work; both Maggie and Wendy seemed to ensure that Richie and Danny grew up with strong moral values, and both of the children were affected greatly when their mothers died. As children, they are forced into an environment where they deal with a supernatural evil, though they are not in any real danger unlike other characters until the end of the story (when Jack chases Danny and when Richie and the other Losers fight It for the first time); all other times, they mainly see things that make them aware of the danger that is present. Notice that with Richie, unlike the other Losers, is not physically affected by It really at any point. This is very different from how It works with the others because that danger is still there even after the event has passed. The blood in Beverly’s bathroom is still there even after she leaves and goes back. But with Richie, in the park, he is able to make the danger go away, he puts those glasses back on and everything goes back to normal (the others physically run away from the danger, but Richie is psychologically running away from it by telling himself it isn’t real). Anyway, this event stays with them long after they’ve grown up and moved far away from the place where the trauma occurred: Richie moved from Maine to California (Chicago in the film) while Danny moved from Colorado to Florida (later to New Hampshire). They then, turn to drugs and/or alcohol, which is said in Doctor Sleep to sort of repress the ability to shine and keep those negative past memories at bay; Richie seems to lean more towards drugs than alcohol, and vice versa for Danny. When they are 40, they are drawn back to the place where they were mainly abused as children and are able to use their abilities to destroy the evil thing finally before returning back home to their pets and their co-workers that they have weirdly close relationships with and all is good. That's essentially their main stories, but I'm also going to talk about a few specific connections that I think are cool to see.
Both Danny and Richie use their hands as the main source of their shining abilities. This is not obvious with Richie in the movie, but it is for Danny with him and Tony. However! In the book, Richie's main goal in life as a child is to become- of all things- a ventriloquist. You know, a person that uses their hands a lot like how Danny does to make it look like Tony is more than just a voice. Speaking of voices, that's Richie's main thing. Who is to say all those voices aren't like Tony in that they're a personification of the shining? (more on this below) This is also a connection between the two because neither of them is particularly good at doing voices, they essentially still just sound like themselves; this doesn't mean that those voices don't represent other people, though, even if they do come out of Danny's and Richie's mouths. The whole hands thing also works for the other members of the Losers Club, with each of the Losers relying on their hands for their jobs, just like Danny, who, in Doctor Sleep, is mentioned as being a janitor before becoming an orderly at a hospice (I would classify him more as an unregistered nurse, as he does say he’s had medical training). Hands and arms in general play huge roles in these two stories, which I think sort of puts the nail in the coffin of this argument. As a child, Danny Torrance gets his arm broken by his father, which is the moment when he starts talking to his imaginary friend/personification of the shining, Tony. While nothing huge happens to Richie’s arms in the book or movie, I would go as far to say (I am aware this goes off-topic, but bear with me here) that in the hierarchy of who shines the brightest of the Losers, Eddie is up there since not only does he get his arm broken twice in the book, it’s also what causes him to die because he gets his good arm bitten off and he bleeds to death. Eddie in his final moments is so strange to me, and I think the reason why that is is that he physically cannot shine. His only arm left is broken. Of course, It would want to take that away from him because it’s aware that Eddie has the ability to kill it.
Both Danny and Richie rely on the guidance of an old (dead) friend to keep them on the correct path. For Danny, this is Dick Hallorann, as he appears in Doctor Sleep to guide Danny to return back to the hotel. For Richie, this is Stanley, as a memory of Stan keeps Richie from going back home.
Both Danny and Richie are able to form a connection with the dead/dying. For Richie, he's mostly connected to those who have already died, while Danny seems to help more with people who are dying. I mostly noticed this in It after realizing the voices of people (rather than original characters) Richie seems to do more often- Humphrey Bogart, James Dean, and Pancho Vanilla (based on Pancho Villa, the Mexican general)- are all people who have died before 1958. I like to imagine that this is just Richie flexing with his shining ability and him being able to form those connections with those people by taking their voices and making them his own. Notice that in the book, “voices” is usually capitalized, as if it represents something a lot more important than just a kid doing an impression.
Both Danny and Richie have confusing relationships with others, specifically their bosses. This is more a personal thing rather than a fact, but I have realized that these characters do have rather strange relationships with others. With Danny, he meets Billy after taking a bus to New Hampshire, and Billy gives him a job and a place to stay. They become fast friends, though I mainly attribute this to their shared ability to shine (yes, of course, I’m going to mention that Danny often sings along to YMCA while working). Danny eventually tells Billy about what’s going on with the missing kids, and Billy is just unusually calm with the situation and agrees to go with him to Idaho to find Bradley’s glove. With Richie, however, I would say the strange coworker comes in the form of Steve, who is his manager in both the book and the movie. Obviously, if you have never been to my blog before, I really like Steve. He’s a fun character to look at not only because of the way he interacts with Richie but because I am willing to bet that that’s who Richie ends up with (at least, in the movie, since that was the plan in the 2010 script). Like Danny with Billy, Richie wants to tell Steve about the crazy stuff that’s happening, if he remembered what happened at all. I know this isn’t really a good explanation for the comparison between Danny and Richie, but I feel like their relationships with Billy and Steve are just really interesting and something that stuck out to me in the books and the movies.
Of course, now, I feel like I need to justify all of this. I need to come up with some reason why these two characters are connected and why I felt the need to write all of this garbage. And for the longest time, I didn’t know why. I didn’t know why these two characters stick out so much in this universe.
And then I rewatched It: Chapter Two.
Richie sticks out the most in that movie because of the way he acts is so different from the others. He feels distant, almost. From the minute I see him on screen I am able to look at him and say “that’s Richie”, but at the same time he feels so different to me, as someone who has looked at this character for a long time to try and dissect him. In his opening scene, for one, unlike all of the others, Richie gets a moment on stage where he stares out blankly and he hears these voices, memories from his past (I don’t remember the exact things they said, but essentially they were the voices of himself, Stanley, Eddie, and Henry). That sticks out to me so much because he is the only character that that happens to, even after he drank a glass of bourbon like a minute beforehand (of course, this also can sort of be explained as the shining is dulled by alcohol, not always taken away completely). To be honest, all of the Losers tend to turn to alcohol when faced with stressful memories throughout the movie. But it wasn’t until later that I realized that Richie was seen differently by the Losers. In the Neibolt House, I feel like the Losers tend to somewhat overreact when it comes to Richie after being attacked by the spider-Stanley (like… when Eddie broke his arm, most of them were focused more on Pennywise rather than helping Eddie). And later after Eddie got stabbed, he looks to Richie as if Richie is going to help him.
This goes back to my hierarchy statement before, but essentially, what I’m getting at is that Richie shines the most. Like… Danny Torrance levels of shine. That’s why they are connected. It’s shown in Doctor Sleep that those who shine the most tend to connect to each other, so who’s to say that Danny didn’t know about Richie? In my hierarchy, by the way, I would say that the order of who shines the most would be: Richie, Stanley, Eddie, Beverly, Bill, Mike, and then Ben. Of course, this would bring up the issue of “if Richie shined the most, then why didn’t the Turtle talk to him instead of Bill?”, and that can just simply be put down to the fact that Bill is the leader. That came to be not because of his shining, but rather simply because of the way he looked; the other Losers (I believe it was either Eddie or Richie) mention that they look up to Bill, mainly because he is taller and stronger and more handsome. Why would the Turtle go to Richie for help with this when Richie has been running away from himself his whole life? Bill was the logical reason because he could lead them in a way that Richie never did.
Overall, I feel like both Richie and Danny have these super similar qualities that are hard to ignore. I love both of these characters, so writing this long piece of garbage was a lot of fun. It was also fun to rewatch these movies and see that there is just this big connection that is there for fans of the books, so I am dying to see where it goes. It feels like they are waiting for The Dark Tower to bring them together with the mentions of the Turtle and Ka and space and all of that, but I feel like a whole new story would be really interesting as well. Plus, you know, I am dying to see a teenaged Abra trying to explain to shining to Richie.

yalright let’s do this
AGENTS OF SHIELD SEASON ONE REWATCH COMPLETE BREAKDOWN MEGAPOST
hella spoilers for the entire canon up through season 5, but not 6 because I only saw it the once and am having a hard time remembering ANYthing about it.
I cannot determine specifically what it was about this season that caused to be branded “literal garbage” in my mind-hole for seven years.
Best guesses:
there’s some cheesy stuff that probably didn’t sit well with me at the time, and, at the time, there was no way of knowing that that kind of stuff was going to be ultimately eradicated
there’s some good stuff, like character stuff and plot stuff, but it didn’t successfully implant positive emotional responses in my brain-hole, leading me to be frustrated/offended at its own self-importance
there’s some stuff that just Doesn’t Work. I won’t call anybody out, but there are some main side characters whose casting, in my opinion, leaves much to be desired. when it comes to acting ability, I feel that it’s important to have the ranges of your entire cast match each other. if you’re gonna hire B-listers, at least make sure they’re ALL B-listers. if you’re gonna splurge and get some S-tier talent, pleeeeease don’t embarrass the B-listers by thinking you’re doing them a favor by including them on your project. Understood, this opinion is highly subjective and I can’t expect everyone in front or behind the screen to buy into it, but it’s definitely a pet peeve of mine that causes strong reactions in me*
some of the plots are tired and/or straight up boring. I got through them easily this time through because I was able to focus on the things I like, which is largely character interactions and re-learning the backstory for stuff that I know will continue to be important later on. imagine listening to your grandpa’s stories about his life, but instead of telling you the cool stories about going to the moon or whatever, he’s telling you in great detail about the time he got his shoelaces stuck on like, a rusty nail sticking out of a fence. It’s not a great story but it does explain why his mom only bought him velcro shoes after that and one time when they were trying on shoes in the store a couple of years later, some other kid started making fun of him for having velcro shoes and long story short your grandpa’s relationship with that kid is what got him interested in astrophysics and also he married that kid twenty-five years later -- but right now the story is specifically about spending forty minutes trying not to get tetanus.
Now that I’m older and wiser, what really surprised me throughout, though, was that not only was I not having any type of reaction that validated my “literal garbage” classification, I was noticing that there was A Lot of stuff that ticked a lot of boxes.
I’m talking technical stuff, the textbook basic filmmaking stuff, the stuff that I subjectively find objectively “Good” because it means that creative decisions were made with intent and were also executed proficiently enough to make that intent clear.
I’m talking SYMMETRICAL NARRATIVE which has to be one of my all-time favorite techniques, one that I personally use a lot, and I’m very biased in responding favorably when I see it, so I think ultimately this is a huge reason why this season cannot be classified as garbage this time around. Because it shows that they cared! It shows that they had A Plan! It’s an emotionally satisfying technique that can be used to great effect when tipping the audience off to how far we’ve come from where we started. It creates this nice tidy structural loop which I find very appealing.
Just real quick, you see this in individual episodes or even scenes, too. Here’s a classic A+ example from episode 2:
Simmons has given Skye a bottle of water as a gag because that’s what happens on planes, and that bit is a set up to this bit, where Coulson is talking about how he rebuilt the Bus from the “studs up” and it demands to be treated with kid gloves; ergo:
Only to have the thing completely wrecked over the course of the episode. In the denouement, “just starting to warm up to this place,” Coulson says ruefully, righting a broken glass as if that will put the plane back together; Skye immediately tosses a coaster down and moves the glass on top of it.
As a callback, it juxtaposes the starting-state and ending-state in your mind and highlights the contrast between the two. And it’s also a nice character-building beat where you, the audience, get to observe Skye’s character in that she remembers a trivial detail that happened to be important to Coulson. You also get to see Coulson observing the same, and you understand a little bit more about both of them. *chef’s kiss*
So this is a pretty powerful and common technique, and I guess you could say that any well-resolved narrative is by definition going to recall you to the specifics of how it started. Like ep 1 we start with Mike and Ace, their call and response “what are we/we’re a team,” and an understanding of Mike’s desire to be his kid’s guardian and hero and his desperate search for the tools that will allow him to become that. In the finale, we see the pay off where Ace (via Skye) reminds Mike of this motivation, and Mike is finally in the position to protect his kid by taking out the Big Bad.
But I don’t want to go through the list to demonstrate that everyone’s character arcs likewise left them in a thematically resolved position relative to where they started. Obviously this is an expectation of all (well structured) narratives.
(And I don’t really mean to talk about callbacks themselves, such as Fitz’s obsession with monkeys or May’s repeated demand of “don’t call me that.”)
Stuff that only comes up at the beginning and the end. Here’s the kind of symmetry that I mean:
Skye’s use of GPS encryption and the location of the diner where she first meets Mike. Both topics come up in ep 1, and are revisited in ep 20 when she’s stalling for time against Ward and brings him to the diner by telling him that it’s the GPS coordinates necessary for decrypting the drive. It says, last time you were here, Skye, you were living out of a van and fangirling over people with superpowers; now you’re an official agent of SHIELD (fun while it lasted, anyway) and you’re currently doublecrossing your own doublecrosser who was directly responsible for transforming you into the competent spy you are today.
Same thing: the only time we see Lola fly is at the end of ep 1, when Coulson and Skye are heading back to the Bus, and in ep 20 when Coulson rescues Skye from off the Bus.
Ep 2: 0-8-4. We’re introduced to the very first object with the titular designation, and Simmons idly wonders “imagine what it would do to a person.” Ep 22, it’s used to evaporate Garrett. Same ep, we also meet the little, what even is it, that dendrotoxin EMP (??? I don’t recall whether the gadget is named) that Ward uses, and Coulson uses it in ep 17 to incapacitate Garrett.
Similarly, all the cool alien gadgets we spent the first few episodes gathering and locking up, including that first 0-8-4, are all broken out into the wrong hands in ep 18.
Also in ep 2 we are introduced to the idea of being thrown out of the airplane and Skye & co specifically prevent Ward from being sucked out. We’re introduced to the concept of Coulson’s cellist! Fury also makes a cameo (”talkin to me about authority”) !
It’s a little later on, but ep 6 has Simmons jumping out the plane, and Ward proving his Good Teammate status by jumping out after her (while Fitz is struggling on his way to do the same). Ep 21, Ward boots FitzSimmons out the plane, and in ep 22 Fitz finally has the chance to properly save Simmons himself.
Ep 19 Coulson has a chance to save his cellist (again)
Ep 22, Fury comes back all Deus ex Machina and relinquishes authority of SHIELD directly to Coulson.
There’s also some dialogue recycled on purpose to make a point, like Fitz-Simmons introductory scene is recreated almost verbatim in ep 21:
Ep 2, talking to Skye about his mission vs ep 18 talking to Raina about his mission
(gotta admit, the man took this role seriously. check out that cheekbone game he achieved in such a short time)
And again, Ep 1 Ward vs Ep 18 Ward. They even framed it the same!!
All this to say, Season 1 is Structurally Sound and it has my blessing.
Now let’s move on to the list of things I liked that surprised me:
It’s pretty well polished, visually. Joss Whedon’s veteran control of the director’s chair is readily apparent in the pilot, setting the visual tone for the series. There are some made-for-tv shots over the course of the season, sure, and the least impressive compositions tend to involve CGI backdrops, but they do make the most of their interior sets and work hard to dress up various LA locations to, er, inspire the idea of the international scope of the show. In my last update, I talked about ep 8 The Well in the context of Quality Directing, so it definitely goes above and beyond the basic shot-reverse shot when it wants to.
Ward. Just for the record, I think Brett Dalton is great at his job and really brought exactly what they wanted to this character. Eps 1 and 2 are a little shaky and stiff, but everyone’s performances are, as they let these characters coalesce around them. I remember not liking Ward when I was watching this live, and honestly I think this was intentional. He’s that character that you expect that you’re expected to like, you know, the traditional cocky savior type that lots of those fancy heroes are. But because he’s so tropey in his characterization, you’re just ... over it? And then when they flip the script and you’re supposed to hate him -- WOW. It’s like two Christmases at once. They took something you were already doing and rewarded you for it.
I’m not unaware of the “redeem grant ward” phenomenon. I’m aware that the character had fans who were honestly drawn to and appreciative of the character before that persona was revealed to be a lie.
And honestly, it’s not that I like OR dislike Ward at all. As a person. It’s annoying that he’s a cocky bad-boy. But it’s sweet when he plays nice with Simmons. It’s embarrassing that he and May have “a thing.” But it’s cathartic when he opens up to Skye about his past. And Then, the sequence where we know he’s Hydra but Skye doesn’t. And Then, the sequence where Skye knows he’s Hydra but he doesn’t. And Then, his weird yucky confusion where he still wants to pursue something with Skye or doesn’t want to put down puppy-dog-eyed Fitz.
As a character, Ward is a great character. His set up is so bland that the twist does appear to come out of nowhere, but on a rewatch all the groundwork is there. His characterization as a baddie is enthralling. I’m forecasting into season 2 a bit, but you want to follow his nefarious exploits just as much as you want to see his ex-friends smash his face in. Brett Dalton played it right, A+ good job. It makes Framework!Ward just that much more of a beautiful thing, to get to see what it would have been like if the Season 1 persona had actually been the man.
Also as covered in the last update, I was really very pleased to see how much character work was being done in this season. Because I only watch and rewatch starting from the second season, there are important plot points that I’d been grudgingly attributing to this season about which I’d forgotten the specifics, such as, what’s the deal with Gravitonium, howcome we hate Ward so much, where did they get that memory-torture-machine, why are you acting like I recognize Titus Welliver’s character? What surprised me was how much of a focus there is on character development as well. A lot of good origin story stuff, like how green FitzSimmons is and how soft and good-hearted Skye is and all the reasons we respect and trust May and all the reasons we would follow Coulson to the ends of the earth. Watching a found family start to put down roots is worth it, too, ten times out of ten.
The tie-in stuff wasn’t as overstated and stifling as I remembered it being. They were allowed quite a long leash even this far back. Centipede is based on Extremis, but helms a a unique narrative. The Asgardians-of-the-week are just MacGuffins for driving character stories. Turns out all of SHIELD has been Hydra all along! Sucks to be you, a show about the Agents of SHIELD ... oh wait, Daddy MCU’s insane twist is mirrored in the DNA of your team’s composition AND baked into your overall season arc? Well then. Carry on!
Engaging with Season 1 explicitly as a prequel is a powerful thing. First time through, I had the distinct realization that “too much of a good thing” was at play regarding Coulson. He’s everybody’s favorite MCU character in 2013, hands down, but ... getting intimate with him for 40 minutes a week really waters down his mysterious G-man appeal. BUT. After spending six+ years with the man, Season 1!Coulson is a precursor to the 3-dimensional Director you’ll fall in love with, rather than a distortion of the one-liner MCU!Coulson you thought you wanted.
So what’s next! Absence makes the heart grow fonder, and here all all the things I associate with AoS that were not present in Season 1:
Robot hand.
DaISy JoHnsOn
AGENT/DIRECTOR MACK where is he I need him
Fitz’s facial hair
Their underground SSR base with the exposed brick, I miss that place all the time
Hive, Bobbi*, Hunter, Kyle MacLachlan, Maveth (everything** about Seasons 2 and 3, really). Robbie Reyes. Aida and Kasius!! I know these things are temporary, but they’re so important to the best bits and I love them.
Getting to see episode after episode where there are scenes at a time containing a majority (up to 100%) of women and/or POC characters with executive agency, and none of those characters are token or temporary but were placed there with intent to normalize a diversified cast.
My absolute favorite episode of all time, 4x15 Self Control.
Things I am not looking forward to:
**Lincoln. I’ve seen these seasons four times and just now I had to google his name because I wasn’t sure it wasn’t Logan. He’s garbage and I’m glad he’s dead. Other opinions are available.
Misc. Thoughts
*I said I wouldn’t name names but Adrianne Palicki is a C-lister who can swing a B+ if the stars align. I love Bobbi, though, especially the way the character’s reputation precedes her, how her adorableness complements her badassness. In fact, the character’s a great foil to May, who is also a badass lady and S-tier agent but has a completely different approach to being those things. Bobbi’s a reminder that badassness and aloofness are not correlated at all. Also there’s a headcanon out there that she’s non-binary (one of the reasons she prefers Bobbi over Barbara) and that is a concept I can get behind. Bobbi’s perfect and I’ll fight you if you don’t agree.
Poor Trip!!!!!!! When you always start from Season 2, he’s really just a flash in the pan, there and gone. I’ve always been like, “well, he didn’t really have a home here, no carved-out niche, so I guess getting Coulson’d and becoming something to avenge is the best a character like him is gonna get.” But now that I see that he comes late to the game as a literal stand in for Ward, his story is that much sadder. He was never intended to BE a character. He’s introduced with Garrett as a pawn/distraction during this arc’s who-is-Hydra shell game, he’s kept to demonstrate what kind of friend and agent Ward should have been, his defining character trait as a gentle flirt only serves as a catalyst for Fitz’s coming to terms with his feelings for Simmons. The poor guy is just a walking plot point, up until the bitter end. :<
I had entirely forgotten and/or never tracked the fact that Fury put together Coulson’s team specifically to monitor him after project T.A.H.I.T.I. I’d forgotten the distrust Coulson has for May after he perceives that she has betrayed him by being a part of this. It’s a season-specific reveal that is literally never mentioned again. It’s important to the fabric of the narrative of that particular arc, offering up May alongside Ward and Trip as fodder for the aforementioned shell game, but the true inciting incident of this entire show just gets swept under the rug and ceases to matter. I’m kind of :/ about that.
When you’re bi and non-binary, you’ll get a lot of mileage out of wanting to be/be with Daisy and/or Fitz, don’t judge me
In conclusion, Season 1 is the opposite of literal garbage, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is my favorite show and my favorite MCU movie, Daisy Johnson is my favorite Marvel superhero (not related to Season 1 but still true), and nobody had better spoil Season 7 for me pleaAAASE don’t let it happen.
