Character asks: Gen from the queens thief

do I like them?

it would be hard to like this series if i did not like gen!! although as much as i loved the first book, i think i came to like him much more when the series settled into other pov characters and forever only showing him from the outside. we never really get into his head again after the second book, and weirdly i think that works for him. gen the unreliable narrator is a lot of fun, but gen as a mystery, as observed by costis or sophos or pherus is way more interesting to me, as they all have different expectations of him.

(costis is terrible at reading gen and consistently thinks the absolute worst of him until about the last chapter; several things that should have been obvious — who his mede tutor was — takes him until the final pages to figure out. sophos meanwhile still essentially thinks of gen as the character from the first book and struggles to see him as “eugenides” — he’s one of the only characters who actually refers to him as gen when speaking and in narrative, and that’s a nickname gen himself doesn’t use that often!; sophos also struggles when gen ISN’T the person sophos remembers or wants him to be. and meanwhile pheris seems to figure gen out pretty quickly, because he’s super observant and smart, but he doesn’t care because he’s only concerned with his own safety. so he realizes right away that gen is smart and kind, he just does nothing with that information. i love that shit. i want more of it. i want to hear how every person in the universe sees gen while never going into gen’s head to see him for ourselves!)

5 good qualities

he’s INCREDIBLY observant, loyal to the ends of the earth, determined and stubborn, smart, pretty funny, and superhumanly agile and strong. honestly he has so many good qualities i’m glad we don’t spend too much time in his head, and that he has some real flaws to go with it:

3 bad qualities

TEMPER. oh boy is gen constantly at a low simmer and ready to throw down. pride, going with that temper, and i love how the books make it clear that these are flaws, that they do very much ruin his day. he has a certain emotional immaturity, even after the last book: he wants to do things his way, he sulks and becomes defeatist, he really struggles with pragmatism and leadership and being responsible for anything beyond himself. he’ll do it, but he’ll be miserable and often literally sick about it. of the main cast of monarchs, gen is both the most powerful and the least prepared for the job and politics.

favorite episode/etc:

costis helping gen up the stairs, just a perennial favorite. the first book, and in particular the moment the penny drops and “oh, it’s you, gen.”

otp:

i guess gen/irene? this is really not a series i read for the romances. and controversial opinion, i just think they’re fine. i’m not that invested. i know some people adore it and there are aspects i like, but this is one of the times i feel like the distant narrative style and show don’t tell hurt a little bit. we observe them but always at a distance. (sophos and helen are a much bigger offender.)

love gen and costis but the medal here is definitely helen and gen, who i wish we got to see more of. we know from book one that the two adore one another; they’re cousins but practically siblings. she’s one of the few people that know him utterly and can both call him out and support him, and yet of all the relationships in the series i feel like we never quite got enough of them. i love him comforting her after sophos leaves, i love whenever characters mention they thought the two of them would end up together and helen just laughs and looks at the camera, i just wish we got to see them hanging out more, you know?

headcanon:

you know how by “conspiracy” he is paying aris off to sneak out of the palace sometimes? i bet that costis somehow introduced them. like he realized gen was going to try to escape and was like aris please do me this favor and take gate watch and aris was like okay sure and then was immediately susceptible to bribes. i just loved that costis’s bff shows up for three seconds just to accept bribes. costis and his honor must just have the worst headaches.

Epic 7 Heroes: Roana and Elena

Gonna tackle two of the newer Soul Weavers now.

Starting with Roana, she is mainly there to be an SSB counter but is actually pretty good against all heroes who user counter attacks. C.Zerato for example, counters somewhat frequently, and while most people have him use the strip artifact, which means he would strip Roana’s revive buff, it still means that she heals the whole team and give them a CR buff which is overall more valuabe than a revive.

ML Ken is a weird case, since the dmg output of him fluctuates based on the gear people are running him with. There are some Kens that hit distressingly hard, so many DPS units will die before the heal kicks in, but usually speaking, more tanky units, especially if there is dmg mitigation via F.Ceci shield or Aurius, will survive the ML Ken counter and then get healed.

She also does really well against counter-Dizzy, but since Roana does nothing against debuffs, there is still a certain danger. But given that Dizzy’s dmg is rather low, Roana always heals a lot more than Dizzy inflicts on the team, Dizzy actually provides a lot of healing which can be taken advantage of by targeting Dizzy delibarately. Just need to keep in mind that she stuns with her S1 so a cleanser would help or having a lot of effect resistance.

Charles is actually a bad match-up. He strips the revive buff, and while the first counter atk triggers a heal, the second follow up attack does not and that’s where Charles’ dmg lies so a Charles can ruin your day as he usually does.

SSB is, of course, the unit that really makes Roana shine. She counters so frequently, that Roana’s heal actually completely mitigates the dmg she does. The danger there is, SSB’s S3 can apply the anti heal debuff which ruins Roana’s kit and similarly, the defense break can also make any healing moot. But if those debuffs are resistet, there isn’t really anything SSB can do at that point anymore. SO, over all, I am rather happy with her in the sitatuions I use her in. Mine is built rather tanky with a lot of HP, DEF and Effect Resistance. She is slow, unfortunately, but then again, she doesn’t really need much speed but of course, it wouldn‘t hurt. She is definitely worth building, seeing how prevalent SSB is.

I gaave her the CD reduction on her S3 and put +4 on her S2. She doesn’t really need more and I guess it is debetable whether she needs any mola at all. I am not going to put any more mola into her any time soon but I could see how maxing her to get all the healing and barrier strength could be useful. It is just a lot of mola for a hero that will not be that much better at that point.

Artifact wise, I like Shimadra staff to increase her healing and give her even more effect resistance but most Soul Weaver artifacts work for her, really.

Her design is a bit ... anime, unfortunately, but she is worth building still since she does something relatively unique in the game and that is be a hindrance to heroes with counter mechanics.

I was meh on elena at first but since then, I have considerably warmed up to her. She does so much work, it is amazing. I use her in expedition against Brutal Pherus for example, and she heals solidly there. But where she really shines is in PVP, especially against two very meta high level ML heroes, particularly in arena.

She is very useful, if not an outright counter of sorts, against Faithless Lidica and Arbiter Vildred. Faithless Lidica’s S2 is an AOE attack which triggers Elena’s S2, healing your team. Since FLidica’s S2 doesn’t do that much dmg, that isn’t really important. What is important is that if you have Magahara’s tome, Elena using her S2 gives her a CR boost. If your Elena is somewhat speedy, that means she cuts into the enemy turn, allowing you to use her S3, giving your whole team invincibility. Whatever attack FLidica wanted to facilitate is now rendered useless.  If you also have ML Ken, that really counters Arbiter Vildred since he then attacks your invincible ML Ken who then counters him to death, then tanks his second, even stronger attack after Arbiter’s revive and kills him again. You don’t need ML Ken on top of Elena to counter Arbiter but it is the easiest way, imo.

Since her S3 also does a miniscule amount of dmg, it is also perfect for removing the negate atk buff that FLidica or FCeci can apply.

Now, i have seen Elena on a counter set and yeah, I guess I can see how it could be useful to remove the occasional buff but I have to say, speedy Elena with Magahara just seems a lot better.

Another convenient thing with Elena is that she doesn’t really require a lot of molas or amazing gear. Mine has decent health and def, not really any effect resistance and not even her speed is that fast. I will grant that there have been one or two moments where the 30% CR boost was not enough to cut in because the enemy team was just that fast but it is not hard to build a faster Elena than mine.  I put mola to reduce the CD of her S3 and 4 into her dmg reduction S2. It would be worth maxing her S2 since more dmg reduction is always good but it is also not necessarily. Strictly speaking, she doesn’t really need any mola for PVP purposes, since it is rare that a match goes long enough to get to a second use of her S3.

Weird thing but her english voice acting is, for some reason, oddly bad. I do not know what went wrong there but something really did.

The Kingdom

Hey guys! I am publishing my Red Stone: The First Battle novel version online. I basically posted it on wattpad, but here’s the first part for your convenience. One day, near the window on the castle lounge, stands King Durran Kii. A king with great power and rules a kingdom of protectors. King Durran has the ability to magically move so fast from one place to another. Everyone who truly believes it has special abilities. King Durran always wears his necklace with red stone pendant and long golden chain. He has a little mustache, with bulging muscles which are signs of his rigorous strength training as a king, who will always be prepared to protect his kingdom. King Durran loves to wear his green and brown hardened top, with carved symbols on the bottom ends of the sleeves.

The King holds his wife's hand, a queen as beautiful as the glow of sunlight, with dark hair and brown eyes. The queen Maria Costana Kii, a beautiful queen dressed with a golden thin crown on her head and colorful pieces of jewelry on her neck. The King and queen both look at the queen's belly and are very excited to see their first child soon. Servants passed on the lounge to clean up, while the two stands just right beside the window. The sun glows right to them, it's golden rays sparkle the king's pointed golden crown. One servant, in particular, looked at them and has a mysterious stare. Whatever it might be, the king and queen remains happy and are looking forward to this very exciting moment of their lives, and for the kingdom's future.

The king walked near the window and opened it. Queen Maria looked at him and smiled. King Durran, looked at the vast lands of the kingdom of Kaptan. It is indeed a marvelous place, and it's home to amazing people and different creatures. It is a well protected Kingdom, and every other nation surrounding it dreams to be its ally. Kaptan has a strong past, to others, it may be considered a legend, but to everyone in Kaptan, it's a faithful story of the Kingdom's history.

Long ago, maybe a thousand years have passed, the great ancestors of the royal family - the Kii, have done something amazing that it has produced a powerful stone that stayed with the royal family for many generations. This is the reason why the kingdom is well protected.

The Kingdom is also very abundant of resources, especially gold, and has advanced knowledge than the other kingdoms except for the Grocnuns Empire. It's the only empire they have no idea about. It's also a bit further from the kingdom of Kaptan. The Kingdom's closest neighbor - Pherus is known to be fond of celebrations too. They have many celebrations in one year. Some people and creatures go to Pherus if they are looking for fun.

"My dear, this is the place our precious child will grow up. I am sure, whether he's a boy or girl, he will love this place as much as we do" the king said. The queen lays her head on the king's shoulder, and they both enjoyed the beauty of Kaptan. "Well, all I can hope for right now is that the Hantik forest can finally be opened. For generations it's been the only forest nobody from our kingdom could ever enter, well they can enter, but nobody can get out anymore". There was a brief silence after that, but then they regain the joy on their faces.

Hantik forest, very close to the entrance of Kaptan has been known to be a dark forest where dark creatures live. Many stories come from the forest, some are true some are not. It was known to be an entrance to a Kingdom where an evil queen was exiled by the king's ancestors - the kingdom of Gaedour. For many years, many people still believe the legend. Whatever lies in the dark forest, all nations look up to the Kingdom of Kaptan for its great history, leadership, amazing people and abundant resources. But, what else could be out there?
