17th-Century Silver Coin Hoard Discovered in Wettin Germany
Archaeologists from the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt (LDA) have discovered a large 17th century coin hoard during construction works at a farmstead in the town of Wettin, Germany.
Situated in the heart of Wettin, the farmstead has been maintained by the Altstadt Wettin e. V. since 2018. The organisation is dedicated to preserving the town’s cultural heritage, which is at risk of being demolished due to modern development.
The bourgeois farmstead dates from the 16th to 17th century and can be traced to the time of the end of the Thirty Years’ War via written sources. From 1681, the building served as the town’s pharmacy, as indicated by remnants of an 18th-century baroque stucco ceiling and an Apotheke vault.
Construction work at the farmstead has uncovered a hoard of 17th-century coins in the gate area leading to the central courtyard. Archaeologists found 285 silver coins in layers of compacted soil, which were sent to the restoration workshop of the LDA Saxony-Anhalt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The hoard was likely deposited in the late 1650’s, with more than half of the coins being silver thalers, a currency used by several states of Northern Germany, first under the Holy Roman Empire, then by the German Confederation. The rest of the hoard consists of thaler fragments and various groschen coins.
Among the hoard are the so-called Schreckenberg grochen coins and Albertus thalers minted in the Spanish Netherlands. There are also coins minted by the German emperors, the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg, the Archduke Albert VII of Austria, and King Philip IV of Spain.
According to the LDA: “In addition to its scientific significance, the Wettin coin find is also an excellent example of the important contributions that voluntary work in close cooperation with the responsible authorities for the preservation of buildings and archaeological monuments can make to our knowledge of the history of Saxony-Anhalt.”

After a long period of screaming NOTHING, I’m back!!!
Yay😂….
and I brought something “new” with me:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
the
PHILIPS NC2234 Full Auto Stop
Cassette Recorder
It’s a classic mono tape recorder for usual Compact Cassettes from the late 70s to the early 80s.
But though it’s all in all quite basic, it contains one or another little feature, that didn’t used to be so basic back in the day (or let’s say, that wasn’t included in every device you would call a “classic tape recorder from 1980”).
For the classic features, it has a built in microphone, one big internal speaker (because it’s mono), the typical big buttons for play, pause, record etc.. , a counter, a handle to carry it around, the ability to run it on batteries (6 C-cells) or by cable, and the Auto Stop function.
Special features (in my opinion) would be the “Tone Regulation” (turning button right above the identical volume regulator) and the numerous different connection sockets all around it. Not because there are some at all, but more because of their kind and number!
Typical for an European device of that time would possibly be one or two five poled “Din-Sockets” for headphones or a microphone etc… .But this one doesn’t have a single one of those! In fact is has (beside the plug in for the electricity cable) two regular 3.5 mm Headphone sockets (like in- and output), a little slimmer remote socket (I don’t know how this is actually called) and on the other side it has a single two poled “Din-Socket” for an external speaker.
Sadly the 3.5mm sockets don’t really work, like the output (“phones”) doesn’t work at all and the input (“mic”) works so far, that I was able to record from a plugged in radio, but the quality was so terrible that you couldn’t understand a single word (but the recording mechanism itself works pretty good, because the recordings I’ve made with the built in microphone were actually pretty good and in fact way better than with other devices that I’ve used before this one). The “remote”-socket was the only thing I wasn’t able to test, because I have absolutely no idea what exactly type of plug this is for. But the two poled “Din-Socket” on the other side works perfectly! I’ve connected my Sony headphones via some adapters (Din to Cinch and Cinch to 3.5mm) with it and it works great. Like it sounds way better than from the internal speaker (obviously: cause modern Headphones vs 45yo mono speaker 😂).
Oh and beside all of that technical stuff, I just love it’s absolutely sleek and timeless design, that I think was typical for all early Philips tape decks and recorders (like since the late 60s).
So in conclusion, it’s a (nearly) fully working cassette recorder that is actually still usable for listening to music or voice recording via the built in microphone, but more useless for external recordings!
I gave it a second life by putting it on it’s own little table in my kitchen, where it could just stand around and look beautiful most of the time, but also entertain me with music once in a while.

So I'm annoyed at a collage of minidiscs ending up in my timeline because I follow "diskette" but that's not important...
You know how weird the etymology of "diskette" is?
So, it's a portmanteau of "disk" and "cassette".
Disk as in "a round flat thing", and it's the American spelling, because the diskette was invented by IBM, an American company. Disk (usually spelled "disc" in commonwealth countries) comes from the Greek dískos, as in "discus", the circular thing you throw for sport.
And floppy disks are primarily a circle of magnetic material. That's actually how they were first conceived, as a flexible version of the rigid metal magnetic circles used in hard drives. But they quickly realized that it was impossible to keep them clean: fingerprints and dust stick to the surface too easily, ruining them. So they were given a vinyl (and later, plastic) jacket, so they could be safely carried around.
And thus, diskette was coined. Sometimes you'll see it etymologized as "small disk", like a disk-ette, but that's wrong: it's a portmanteau with cassette. Because cassettes were made by taking reel to reel magnetic tape and putting it in a small case, so they can be quickly and reliably loaded.
And why are cassettes called that? Well, it's French. But in French it's quite simple: it's the diminutive of "casse", which means case. It's a little case. You put the tape in a little box. It's a cassette.
So similarly, diskette was made by cassettizing "disk". You put the disk in a little case. It's a disk cassette, a diskette.
This sort of thinking also explains why they're called "floppy disks" when they've been hard plastic since 1984: it's just like how we call cassettes "tapes". They're not tape, they're a little plastic box containing tape. Tape is a thin flexible thing that you wrap around a spool, not a little plastic box. But we call them "tapes"/"a tape" as synecdoche: a part is used to represent the whole. It's a "tape", fittingly because the tape is the important part. It's the part that stores the audio, the rest is just packaging to keep it safe and reliable.
Floppy disks are similarly called such: the floppy part is the magnetic disk inside the vinyl or plastic case. We're calling the whole package by the part that actually stores the data.
And in any case, they were named as such in comparison to "hard disks": the metal or glass surfaces used by hard drives.
Anyway, three final things:
1. You ever wonder why it's Floppy Disk but optical discs? You have a DVD* disc or a CD (compact disc), not a DVD Disk or Compact Disk. I already basically explained it: floppies were invented in the US, and compact discs came from a Philips/Sony partnership: a Dutch/Japanese partnership. So they used the commonwealth spelling, thus it became a standard to refer to optical media as "discs".
2. My favorite silly floppy fact comes from this sort of thing: so the first floppies were 8", then the 5.25" model was invented, and in 1981 we got the 3.5" floppy. These are by far the three most common floppy disks, and those are their names, used nearly** universally in English.
But here's the thing: one of them is wrong.
8 inch floppy disks? They're eight inches even. 5.25 inch floppy disks? They're 5.25 inches even.
3.5" disks are actually 3.543"!
This is for the same reason why we have disk vs disc for floppy and optical media: 8" disks were invented by IBM, an American company. 5.25" disks were invented by Shugart/Wang, both American companies.
3.5" disks were invented by Sony, a Japanese company. They're not 3.5" disks... They're 90mm disks!
But it was already the standard in English that floppy disk formats get called by their size in inches, so it has always been called the 3.5" disk, because that's close enough for jazz.
3. to get back to the first point of this post: minidiscs aren't diskettes. Diskette is for disks, and minidiscs are discs. They're not flexible, they're rigid: minidiscs are actually magneto-optical discs, where there's a small plastic disc like a CD, which is read by a laser but written by a magnetic read head. Since they have to be rigid for the laser to work, they're (rigid) discs, not (flexible) disks. They are confusing, I agree: usually magnetic media is disk, while optical is disc, and disks have cases, while discs are just a plastic circle... But minidiscs are magnetic AND optical, and they're optical but inside a case. They're one of those exceptions that makes taxonomy so difficult. (they're very trans in that way, imo)
* I intentionally didn't expand out the acronym DVD, because the fun fact is about that is that DVD is not an acronym. Not anymore. It was originally supposed to be Digital Video Disc, but the later Digital Versatile Disc to better reflect the non-video uses of the disc, but apparently the official meaning of the acronym is now that it just is the name of the disc. It's a DVD: it doesn't stand for anything.
** one exception to the "universally called by their sizes in English" that I'm aware of is South Africa. For Reasons they just called the 5.25" disks "floppies", and then when 3.5" disks came around, they called them... "stiffies". Yes, this is hilarious. They know.

The compact cassette was introduced in 1963 by Philips. Relatively cheap and easy to use, the compact cassette was one of the most popular audio media (and the most popular recordable) for a long time (from the early 1970s to the late 1990s), but began to be replaced by compact discs at the beginning of the 21st century.

Fuck it, toolposting time
Tumblr media
This is my day to day kit, and with it I can fix just about anything in the plant. It's missing exactly one thing, and that's a pair of good pliers/multitool, but that's on its way (it'll be carried separately because I'm out of room in my small pouch and my big one is too big. Breakdown of all my tools below the cut
Tumblr media
From left to right, we've got:
- LOTO locks. Safety is first so my locks are first. These are American Lock model H-6698 in blue. Very heafty aluminum lock, does exactly what it's supposed to; locks things out and keeps me safe
- next is my Wiha compact allen key sets. One for metric and one for standard. These ones in particular are nice because of their length, makes for extra leverage.
- after that is my modified Icon magnetic flashlight. I modified it so the longer LED bar faced in towards the battery so it can be used upside down or as a work light. USBc rechargeable and very handy
- taking center stage is my Klein Tools insulated screwdrivers in philips and slotted (flat head). They're well used so I don't use them for any work that would actually require insulated tools as the 1000V rating can't be trusted or verified. Probably my most used tools
-second to last is my trust adjustable hammer. It's a Craftsman model CMMT81623 and it's great at rounding off nuts and bolts or doing percussive maintenance. Has custom dog bone engraving (I did it by hand, don't judge)
-and finally, my trusty toughbuilt cliptech pouch. I love these because they have a quick release mechanism that means I don't have to fight it to take it off and I don't have to take off my belt either. Very convenient. I have a larger one that I use for big jobs, especially electrical jobs because it's been modified to hold my multimeter and some other useful tools.
That's all for edc except for my keys (not pictured for obvious reasons) and my radio, which isn't anything special. If this is something people are interested in, I can go into more detail or even do a full toolbox tour (at least, what I'm allowed to show, I do still work for a company haha)

Marvels Magie: Haushofer, Crowley und Blavatsky
Tumblr media
