Clint/Coulson Denny’s has a scrambled egg sausage and bacon sandwich and it’s either noon or midnight.

It's either noon or midnight. Phil isn't sure. They're in the artic circle, and the sun hasn't gone down in nine days. But somehow, there's a Denny's, and there's scrambled egg and sausage and bacon sandwiches.

And there's Clint. Popping up and walking to the counter. Phil watches the door while Clint talks to a server. No one should know they're here, in this Denny's at the top of the world, but they've been plenty of places no one should have found them and been found.

Clint sits back down and flashes Phil a grin. He taps their boots together under the table, then signs, "You're about to love me" with one hand while absently eating bits of sausage off his sandwich with the other.

"Love you now," Phil signs back, sloppy and almost uncoordinated. The sun's been up for nine days, and Phil feels like he's been up as long. Blackout curtains let him sleep, but he doesn't wake up feeling like he has. Clint's done much better, something in him hard-wired to adapt and adjust in a way that Phil doesn't usually envy, but it's hard in a place like this.

"Coffee," the server says, smiling at Phil with a knowing look as she tosses a pot holder on the table, and then sets down a full carafe of coffee. "Your husband asked if we could make you a double-caffeinated pot. Says our lovely lack of sunset is doing a number on you."

"I fucking love you," Phil signs. Clint giggles. "Thank you," Phil says to the server."

"I'm a transplant myself," she says. "I remember those days. You'll adjust if you're here long enough."

"Unfortunately, we won't be," Phil says. They're due to leave in three days. "But the coffee will definitely help."

"I'll leave a note on the kitchen board to look out for the two of you," the server says. "Enjoy your coffee," she signs and grins when Clint whoops.

Phil smiles at him and pours them both a hot, fresh, extra-strength cup of coffee. "Husband?" he signs.

Clint shrugs. "Close enough," he replies.

"The moment we get back," Phil promises, and Clint beams as he watches Phil take his first sip and sigh in relief.

Weekly Writing Update

Still plugging away at my Phlint Christmas fic.

For those following along, this fic takes place Dec 22, 2005 - Jan 2, 2006, in which Phil Coulson goes home to Manitowoc and his family of origin, which consists of his mom, two older siblings, their spouses, and a myriad of kids. Then Clint and Nat show up. Family trauma and drama! Plus Phil and Clint getting together.

So in this scene there are two characters "Ashley" and "Tim" who are Phil's 20 year old niece and 18 year old nephew, respectively. Ashley attends Harvard; Tim is still in high school. The "Chris" mentioned in passing is Phil's older sister.

“I needed this,” Clint said, pushing himself into a head stand. He held it for a moment, and then walked on his hands towards Natasha and the kids. It wasn’t as easy to do on the uneven ground or in the snow, the wetness was starting to seep through his gloves, but Clint had done it on worse terrain in the circus. Tim and Ashley were both watching him with wide eyes. If they thought these easy tumbles were impressive, they must not know many gymnasts or acrobats. Clint supposed his sort of people may not be common at Harvard. “You should have worked out with me this morning instead of canoodling,” Natasha said. She stepped forward and pushed his feet. He fell over backwards into the snow. “Ugh, you know I hate working out first thing,” Clint said, hopping up. “Plus the canoodling was with Phil.” A goofy smile came over his face. Phil with his broad hands mapping Clint’s back. Phil, his warm mouth as thorough and competent as he was. “It was too good to pass up.” “You’re really like with Uncle Phil?” Ashley asked, her face and voice filled with puzzlement. She stood next to Natasha, her arms crossed in front of her as she studied him. Her expression was analytical—a cross between the dissecting gaze of Chris and the considering gaze of Phil. “Like, you’re his boyfriend?” “Hell yeah,” Clint said with a big grin. Boyfriend. He was Phil Coulson’s boyfriend. He knew Phil hated that word, but Clint didn’t. He hated partner because it made them still seem like coworkers. He liked boyfriend, because everyone knew what it meant. He was Phil’s. “It’s just…” Ashley shook her head. “I don’t get it.” “What’s there to get?” Clint asked. “I love him. He loves me.” “But you’re so…” Her face scrunched and she motioned at all of him. “Cool. And Uncle Phil is…” She looked to Tim for help. “Not,” the boy said with a shrug. “Uncle Phil is a dork.” “The secret is that they are both dorks,” Natasha said.

Phlint for the ask game!

What made you ship it?

Other shippers, honestly. I was baffled the first time I came across a phlint fic, I didn't really know who Hawkeye was yet, but I knew I liked Coulson. The dynamic appealed to me, i guess, and i fell down the rabbit hole, lol.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

This is a hard one. I mentioned the dynamic between them, so that's part of it. I like that there are different canon versions of Clint, and fic writers use whichever one they like. I like a lot of the tropes that came out of the ship (and then seeing some of those tropes subverted).

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

No idea. I know that there are people who don't ship it who actively dislike it, so maybe my unpopular opinion is that it's a good ship? But I prefer to enjoy what I enjoy, and i tend to stay away from people who want to rain on my parade because they have a different opinion.
