It’s the most honest job Stan’s ever had.
Sure, the company he’s working for is downright diabolical, scamming their customers in all aspects of life, but that’s not Stan’s problem.
As Le Ville Corp’s most successful customer service agent in the Oregon area his only job is to follow the company guidelines, sell as many bad deals as possible and never ever let anyone back out of a contract.
Morality aside, nothing the company does is actually illegal, so at the end of the day Stan gets to collect his almost-minimum-wage-sized paycheck and go home in the knowledge, that no pigs will come knocking on his door anytime soon.
Life is good. Or at least as good as it gets where Stan is concerned. Last month he even got a raise for selling every bad product the company had to offer to one poor kind sucker.
From household appliances to car insurance, magazine subscriptions and even their extremely shitty telephone and electricity contracts - the McGucket guy brought it all.
Thanks to him, Stan could upgrade from his car to an almost black mold free one room appartment with a community bathroom one block over.
Stan was finally moving up in the world and then his phone rings. He recognises the number. It’s his good friend Fiddle-not-gonna-say-the-rest McGucket.
Stan grins and cracks his knuckles. It’s about time McGucket figured out he’s gotten scammed. Time to make the poor guy’s life a living hell. No one is getting out of a contract on his watch.
“Thank you for calling Le Ville Corp. For us you are more than just a customer. You are family! This is Piers. How can I help you today?”
The moment Stan starts his greeting, he is bombarded with noise disturbances from the other side.
Ah, the good old Le Ville Corp telephone network working as intended. Maybe Stan can convince the guy to upgrade to a slightly less egregious version.
Wait, what did he say?
His name is Dr. Stammered Lynes? Weird, but okay. Still better than Fiddle-nope-not-saying-it Hardon McGucket.
As it turns out, Stan finally met the mysterious roommate whose money McGucket has been using to pay for all of their products. Stan didn’t think the guy had it in him to ditch his roommate after the scam got discovered. Good for him!
Now, how to best screw Dr. Lynes here over.
***
An hour and a half of data security safety questions and a new phone contract later the doc hangs up to Stan’s cheery and corporate mandated farewell:
“And don’t forget we here at Le Ville Corp consider you our forever family, because you will stay with us forever!”
***
Stanford Pines just had the worst month of his life [not counting the weeks after the science fair that he refuses to think about].
The portal test was a disaster, his partner left, his muse refuses to explain himself and on top of all of that his new fridge won’t open, because this week’s subscription fee hasn’t been paid yet.
What the f-FIDDLEFORD!
#gravity falls#stanley pines#stanford pines#Stan’s full fake name is Piers Campfield#for various reasons. For 2. Two reasons.#Stan was quite surprised when he managed to sell all their household appliances to Fidds.#From what Stan understood the guy would be able to create his own from scratch in a heartbeat.#Turns out Fidds was quite intrigued by their innovative subscription system that connected all appliances to Le Ville Corp's private networ#Fidds thought it would be a fun side project to mess around with.#Ford is still in denial about Bill having betrayed him and being evil#so he rather spends his time arguing with his extremely frustrating customer service agent.#Or he would be arguing if he wasn’t forced to pass another security test every time he asks a question.#And then he has to spell everything out twice because “the connection is bad”#WHY IS THEIR TELEPHONE PROVIDER THE SAME AS HIS FRIDGE ONE???#Ford keeps finding more and more subscriptions#contracts and products regarding Le Ville Corp and keeps trying to give them back and/or cancel them but he only ends up upgrading his exis#Also…Ford’s money is running out.#If he ever meets “Piers” he’s gonna shoot him with his crossbow.#And yet Ford keeps calling Piers even after he realizes that Bill has betrayed him and that there are more important things he has to deal#He grows more paranoid#sleeps less#then not at all#but he still has Piers. His forever family. His family. Piers will help him. He has to.#So he explains everything to Piers and asks him to come and take his Journal as far away as he can.#Piers...agrees. That’s what being a forever family means!#Le Ville Corp doesn’t lie to their customers!#Stan should've never gotten attached. This was the best job he’s ever had#and now he’s throwing it all away to help a stranger he annoyed over the phone for weeks#just because he called Stan family.#This might be the dumbest thing he’s ever done.

i think it's so weird how the internet used to genuinely be a nice place to be, because it wasn't really marketable and it wasn't the convenient "everything is on here and everything Will be on here" as it is now. it was just little groups of people in their own little corners making forums and communities. it wasn't ever like "oh no i can't put my laptop down!! i'm addicted to it!!!" it was just .. another way to connect with people. a place to have some games. if you were lonely and didn't have any friends it was a nice little escape. a GENUINELY nice escape. i remember it. i was alive for that. i was young when it was still like this, but it was like that and i remember it. and then phones started to become more like computers. my mom went from having a flip phone to a smart phone. i watched my older sister go from a phone with sliding keyboard where taking pictures was a novelty to social media apps till i got my first phone and suddenly EVERYTHING was in my pocket. phones started to overtake computers for sake of convenience and marketability, and now it's like. every second you spend on your phone is another cent someone else is making. everything you have to do in order to live a life is on your phone. you clock in on your phone. you look at menus at restaurants on your phone. you even order on your phone now!!! in advance! your food will be ready before you get here and you don't have to speak to anyone!!!!! you are constantly near your phone because it is so important to you and so you are now available 24/7!!! it's so convenient it can track your health and habits for you!!! we can also give this data to other apps for your convenience! would you like these companies to know your sleep schedule? would you like these companies to know how fit you are? your medical records are now on your phone! you make appointments on an app now! your medical results are now sent to you on your phone!!!! it's all on your phone! oh, you want to use your computer for this? okay, well the website is practically impossible to navigate because it was made with phones in mind. IT'S ALL ON YOUR PHONE!!!!!
you want a break from your phone for a bit? alright, that's fine, but if your friends are trying to contact you, to talk, hang out, or maybe even because of an emergency you won't know. not unless it's on you 24/7 of course!!!
i never use my phone. i am on my laptop first before i go to my phone. i've never cared about my phone and that hasn't stopped, but i've watched more websites die. more of the internet Die. more websites favor mobile interfaces and completely abandon or neglect computers. "download the app to see this!" "use your phone to log in!" AI is everywhere in search results. it used to be community driven wikis and forums.
want to watch this movie? want to read this book? download this app. buy a kindle! get it digitally get it online! need a textbook for your college class? it's online! it's digital! and it still costs you $70 to rent a digital copy of a textbook!!! isn't this so great!! it's so accessible!
i go to school for something deeply intertwined with the internet. i have film major friends, animator friends, and every other news/media/entertainment outlet intertwined with these fields. many of my friends are very wellversed in most of this stuff because it is literally our job. i've also never been surrounded by so many people with such genuine distaste and hatred for tech ever in my life than these people who work with it for a living. almost all of them i know are so vehemently against streaming services and go out of their way to find physical media, preserve it and salvage it. all my college classes are filled with discussions on dependence on this technology, the dangers of the things we work with, and etc. etc.
it's not really that walkmans and CDs are interesting and cool because they're vintage to us, but because we grew up with those and hate what we have to trade for the sake of "accessibility" that comes with streaming services. we miss years where it wasn't like this. younger generations, people only 5+ years younger than me, are interested in the novelty of a world foreign to them where your every move wasn't tracked and you actually owned the things you bought. that's SAD. AND HORRIFYING ???
and it's just like . i don't know. i've genuinely thought about going to a store, getting rid of my phone and getting a shitty flip phone for calls and texts only before. i WISH i could do that. i can't because i have 40 apps that i can't live without because it is necessary for my job and medical appoinments (i am chronically ill). i have to scan QR codes to navigate daily errands and experiences. i have to have an app for my concert tickets. for my movie tickets. for any reservation i make. i need an app to ride the bus. if i go to museums sometimes you scan QR codes to learn more about what's in front of you. AT A MUSEUM. without my phone i'd be completely isolated from the world. you never used to be isolated from the world for not having the internet. it used to be the other way around.
and well. okay. go outside and meet new people, yes, but everyone's online. social settings aren't what they were during the 2000s, not even what they were in the 2010s. 2020 quarantine fundamentally altered how everything is set up as well. to connect with people you get their tiktok or their instagram. you're more unreachable if you have neither.
and what about people who can't go out and find people like them? what if it's not that easy? what if they're disabled and can't get out of the house often? what if they're queer and live in a very conservative area
queer spaces irl are so heavily designed for allos too. not to mention, unless you live in a major city then these places typically are gay bars or the local libraries teen events. maybe i don't want to go to a bar to meet other queer people maybe i want to do something else.
and like. there's kind of not a solution? this is just the world we live in and we have to make due with it. my closest friends are all online and living near each other irl isn't viable for most of us in our current situations. i would love if that were the case. it isn't.
i have to clock into work on my phone. i have to check paystubs on my phone, i don't even get an option for it to be mailed to me. i have to access all my medical documents on the phone.
i appreciate the accessibility of some things, i really do, but my phone is not my phone, it is an android. it's samsung's. my data is theirs and they could brick it if they really wanted to. i have apps on my phone i can't uninstall from samsung.
idk. i hate phones i think.
#and fuck streaming services lol#rambles#rant#I NEEDED TO GET THIS ONE OUT MY SYSTEM#i am so sick and ill right now and i don't own a lot of things atm so i've been spending a lot of time on my phone when i'm too sick to#get out of my bed#and i closed out of tiktok when i felt it making my brain melt and uninstalled it on an impulse cause i just like . felt so awful#idk#i don't need a political org to radicalize me i have a phone in front of my face that doesn't want me to put it down

the fun thing about ocs is that you can be like "ok they are doing exactly the same thing that I'm doing" and then you're playing toys all day every day.
#talking lettuce#thinking about splatsville and my splatsonas#its very funny that splatsville has just this background radiation of Crime and Banditry. like how does their economy work.#thats not to say that im doing crime right now. im doing logistics for appliance repair. its just that crime needs logistics#for every masked criminal stealing things under cover of night there is a stonefaced customer service representative saying-#-'no officer i dont know where the flat screen tv came from. our company is moving a paperless system and our recordkeeping is a mess rn.'#Ibaa does this. she works at a shipping company because her kinda adoptive mom works there#and she works as a fence for stolen goods on the side because theres a market for that and 'well it was left behind at the post office and-#-they sell unclaimed items after 30 days' is a pretty solid excuse to slap a label on a stolen phone or something#but yea. moving things around in our company system and listing long forgotten dishwasher parts on ebay and thinking 'yay just like my squid

i have always been more of a vampire girl than a werewolf girl but last night i had a thought that changed my mind: as a diabetic, could a werewolf partner smell my hypos? like those service dogs?
#ngl a cute low blood sugar alert system sounds much better than the low blood sugar alarm on my phone#i don't like dogs much so the idea of a service dog has never rlly appealed to me#but a cute werewolf bf or gf? who can then also bring me juice or something? nice#*s#diabetic problems#werewolf

Getting any documentation done in California is like going to subway, but instead of just writing the prices of all the sandwiches on the board and letting you decide what you can and can't afford, the guy tells you specifically that your sandwich will cost X amount.
But it doesn't.
What he's doing is telling you how much the bread cost. If you want a sandwich (you know, that thing you came in for) then he'll gladly let you pick out the meats and salads and sauces, and then tell you how much it actually costs at the till.
That may not seem like a big deal to most people, but it offends me in a way I can't seem to properly articulate. Why would I walk into a subway for bread? I can buy that anywhere. Why did you tell me a baguette was a sandwich? It's not. The bread does not make the sandwich. All the pieces when assembled make the sandwich.
What you gave me were the bare bones of the product you were selling, and when I was already committed to playing out this farce, you then hit me with hidden fees that added up to the real price of the sandwich.
#I don't wanna keep bitching about CA and its many laws#but again this would not happen back home#I would ask for a policy#it would give me a list of options#tell me exactly what was included in each one#and then let me make an informed decision of what I wanted#with the prices all laid out to best accommodate my finances#CA does not do this#it wants to drag out a pretty simply questionnaire over the course of a week#tell me what I'm entitled to#and then keep me hostage on the phone while they take a decade to explain what I actually signed#but making it sound like its the best system because they tell you the bad news politely#this kinda embodies what I appreciate about british customer service#we don't do fake pleasantries. because we're miserable as fuck#but also because we get straight to the fucking point#this is the thing. this is everything in writing what the thing is. this is the price we promised you. do you want it?#if not I don't care. I don't get paid enough to care

I HATE this tech rat race we're all stuck in. Want to access your bank account? You need an app for that. You need a PHONE for that. And fuck your perfectly functioning phone, only new tech allowed. Access to all your apps will be straight up denied if you don't participate in the ever increasing unethical consumption.
#i hate banking#i hate that they dont give a shit#they can pull whatever they want because who's gonna stop them at this point#i really don't want to buy a new phone#especially given the whole cobalt situation#but this is the second super important app that's just stopped updating for older operating systems#i hate that if you're not on trend always you get left behind#fuck#i hate this tech consumption culture so much#what happened to user friendliness#to wanting to service as many different users as possible#everyones expected to have the newest iphone now#i hate it here

Advice from my years of working in call centres:
Not always, but often, the best way to circumvent the phone tree is to repeatedly jab the 0 button or say "Person. Person. I want to talk to a person." like an 86-year-old with just enough hearing to know they're talking to a machine, instead of the attentive, instruction-following digital native you're rewarded for being in other situations.
one of the most infuriating things about becoming an adult is when you realize that it actually is 10x easier to solve problems by making a phone call vs literally any other communication method
#we're all very proud of Not Needing Help#and don't want to be a Karen(TM)#but the phone tree doesn't have feelings and is actively in your way#just be nice when you DO get to talk to a real person#in all likelihood they're as frustrated with the system as you are#and they may have workarounds but they're not going to bend the rules if you yell at them#“i know it's not your fault but is there anything you can do?” goes a long way#customer service
