Watching Plankton Paranoia for the first time rn and…

Krabs really does bend his whole world around Plankton just as much as Plankton bends his world around Krabs, huh. Literally out here tryna bait him into an ‘enemies date’ so he can satisfy some sense of normality when he doesn’t know where he is or what he’s got planned for the day. Can’t accept dude might have other things to do that don’t involve spending time around him, even in an adversarial sense.

So, I really liked Plankton Paranoia-

One Coarse Meal vs Plankton Paranoia: what went right?

I watched a video on darkest Nickelodeon episodes and one was Plankton Paranoia. A good choice, but then they threw out a quick comment that Plankton Paranoia is the Krabs episode of One Coarse Meal. I can see that! But, no one that I know of even mentions Plankton Paranoia (outside of the Spooky Plankton Hell Dream), but everyone and their shelter mom has talked and despised One Coarse Meal. Which makes me wonder, what did Plankton Paranoia do right?

My first thought is that in Plankton Paranoia, Mr Krabs brought his paranoia upon himself, after months of no Plankton he became more and more paranoid. In One Coarse Meal, Plankton was terrified into his paranoia by Mr Krabs, which makes it more mean than sad. Second, Plankton Paranoia didn't end with Plankton attempting suicide. But, it did end with Mr Krabs booby trapping his patties to hurt his friends, which sounds just as horrible. I think the only difference is that what Krabs did was on the more comical side, adding bear traps and dynamite, while Plankton waited for a bus to run him over. Third, Plankton Paranoia added on a happier note, of everyone including Plankton throwing an anniversary party of Plankton's first attempt at stealing the formula. While One Coarse Meal ended with Plankton sicking Krabs worst fear on him, after Spongebob told him about his boss's worst fear. That sounds pretty evil, even with Spongebob involved!

Give your own thoughts. What did you think Plankton Paranoia did right compared to One Coarse Meal? And did you like Plankton Paranoia, or even One Coarse Meal? Or the flip side, did you hate either episode and why?

Ended up looking at a lot of the design stuff rom Plankton Paranoia and Plankton's Ghost for a project that's coming out later this month, so this is me mashing the concepts together a bit.

Really like the animation in the newer episodes too, it's just so bouncy and FUN.

I'm watching LS mark's reviews of every spongebob episode right now and you know- it's not like I agree with the dude on everything he says like I WILL DEFEND PEST OF THE WEST TO MY LIFE IF NEEDED LIKE THAT EPISODE WAS GREAT AND THE IDIOT FRIEND SONG WAS WHOLESOME!! but yeah he mentioned that mr. krabs tends to get paranoia-related episodes a lot and tbh...I never really realized it but that's true- mr. krabs suffering from paranoia seems to be pretty engrained in his character from early seasons on and I'm curious on why that is...is he so protective over his wealth and success because he knows how tough life can be without a dime on your name?

Anyways yeah! Mr. Krabs tends to be paranoid. There's a lot of episodes where he starts to get nervious when Plankton doesn't try to steal the formula. Just being slightly off from the schedule makes him paranoid. I've always assumed that was more because the whole formula shenanigans are the only way he can maintain somewhat of a friendship with plankton. Losing that link puts the nail in the coffin in their relationship and Krabs just can't afford to lose that. He even sabotages Plankton's attempts at building his own life because he's scared of losing him. They got some toxic codependency going on there.

But tbh Krabs has a lot of reasons to be paranoid about stuff. He's been through a lot. From being born into poverty and barely scrapping by in his childhood. We all know his greed stems from his paranoia of falling back into his situation. Even if its a penny. It hurts him deeply to lose it. It's also implied his father abandoned his family as a child. And that episode where he mentioned his father gave him a dollar when he was a child and how guilty he felt over spending it. I'm assuming he kept that dollar loong after his father abandoned them which explains why it hurt so much to spend it. He pretty much described the dollar as being his best friend. How he behaves about money seems more clear that this digs up a lot of painful stuff for himself. He behaves more like he's losing everything or he's leaning really close to that in his mind. When it's something small.

A lot of stuff happened to Krabs that's barely aknowledged in the show. From losing his best and only friend over an argument, to being in the navy. There was even a war mentioned in the Krusty Krab training video episode so you can assume it must have taken a toll on his mental health. It was even mentioned he fell into a deep depression after that. There's also the chum famine of '59. The spongebob movie video game mentions the famine lasted 2 years.

But yeah, this is a pretty interesting topic. I feel like Krabs is the most interesting character in the show but barely used to his full potential. His greed gets out of control in some episodes but its facinating to dig into why. You get some pretty good episodes when you dig into that.

In no particular order;

The duet in Hello bikini bottom! (They??! Sound so good together??? It actually makes me emotional)

A lot of dying for pie, fools in april and pizza delivery obviously

A lot of Christmas who? Especially the clarinet gift and this bit;

"What was I thinking? I gave away all my stuff just so SpongeBob wouldn't be sad. Am I insane?"

The entirety of Bubble Bass's Tab, but especially the "Squidward, that was so masculine!" Scene particularly Squidward being kinda flustered about it and clearing his throat  AND of course the tango

OH and spongebob saying he wants to play the board game in a babytalk voice and Squidward relenting immediately in a babytalk voice before shaking out of it

And spongebobs influence on Squidward's imagination

Them laughing with arms wrapped around each other in Out of the picture (and Spongebobs "...but a little slower than Squidward")

Squidward calling Spongebob his partner in squid noir

Them having fun together in the sewers of bikini bottom (I like when squidwards silly side comes out bc of SB) ans Squidward deciding to go after SpongeBob down the loo lol

SpongeBobs crush being the most obvious thing in the world in Squid Plus One (the little foot thing he does as he says "whatcha doing?" Lmao)

While technically this isn't really squidbob as it was also about patrick, Squidward suddenly panicking about leaving them behind in Pineapple RV and going back and KARATE CHOPPING SEABEARS to save them (even tho they didn't actually need saving lol)

Not really a fan of the episode as a whole but the scene in squidward's sick daze where he's figuring out a name for his fake illness and he points at the things he's basing the name on and points at Spongebob when he says "Cute"

BONUS, aka things that aren't in the show itself:

Squidward calling Spongebob his friend and saying he loves him in the sponge on the run movie

A bunch of comics; Squidward tearing up when SpongeBob tells him it was a great day because he got to spend it with him when they went to a crappy theme park

Squidward going to a meditation class and his mind is full of spongebob and when he finally clears his mind he's happy for five seconds then misses spongebob (and patrick but shh he's not the one all over Squidwards mind lol)

The label maker comic, just their interactions in that are SO CUTE and I love whenever Squidward joins in the fun with spongebob

Squidward taking SpongeBob to a ballet performance (*coughs* date)

As for what kinda scenes I'd like to see in the future:

More obvious moments of Squidward really liking Spongebob, it's obvious to me but some people still think he 100% hates him and nothing else lol (plus any scenes where Squidward actually gets emotionally vulnerable and open are goooood)

Squidward willingly giving spongebob a hug and then getting embarased about it afterwards

Something like a sequel (or just the shows usual thing of copying it's own episodes) of the clam episode with SpongeBob and Patrick, but this time with Spongebob and Squidward and they actually make a really good parental team (maybe junior has some juniors of his own and needs a babysitter or something lmao)

As for my favourite season: hmmm maybe season 12 or 13? I also really like season 9
