Out of all the little critters you've made, who's your favorite freak?
Tumblr media
Scrabies from Mortasheen:
Thematically a giant nonspecific "germ," my favorite genre of character design.
Anatomically based on a barnacle, maybe my favorite group of animals since learning as a child that they're upside-down ingrown crustaceans.
Aesthetically themed around ticks, another favorite animal group and the only animals I was ever afraid of (so they're personally special), with warts resembling embedded ticks, claws resembling tick legs and the body color of a bloated wood tick.
Biologically, Scrabies like all the "Fectoids" in Mortasheen is an amalgamation of fungal tissues, bacterial cells and protists/algae, all things I love and combining them together is a similar principle to lichens, which I think are some of my favorite non-animals besides possibly slime molds.
I also think of it like a sticky seed pod, which is a miscellaneous fixation I always had with plants, love annoying little sticky seed pods.
Attacks by controlling swarms of insects and arachnids, my favorite kind of "superpower," and specifically controls any that feed on blood.
There ARE goose barnacles with orange stems, but for Scrabies's "arm" or "tail" I specifically color picked from a photo of a giant orange leech, and gave it a slicker shinier annelid-like surface to match.
Face is just eyes in darkness, a feature I can't get enough of (and have to try and resist overusing) plus I most love monsters with silly-looking eyes.
Eyes are also inside what I consider its mouth, which is my favorite place for a monster's eyes or face to be (though the "teeth" on the "lips" are just more little ticks)
All in all, I designed this monster as if it was kind of a symbolic mascot of ectoparasitism and "bug bites."
This is probably the maximum number of favorite concepts and visuals I can blend into one thing and still feel it has one simple, coherent design to it, so if we all had just one personal monster summon or monster transformation I guess mine would be this thing or very similar to it.
It's being included in the first mortasheen rpg book which also gives every monster an accompanying gameboy style pixel sprite
Tumblr media
I posed the sprite upside down to show that it can run around on either set of limbs, and to kind of evoke a skittering facehugger. Probably not the only monster design with that many motifs I could pick out though

Slankats
Slankats are a wide group of Sinedenian parasitic heliophytes, most often found in areas with particularly thick foam grass layers which they parasitize on. It is the main host for the most slankats, although there are some exceptions. This group of mixotrophs especially stands out from the rest, having a more animal-like appearance rather than the usual plant-like body plan. Some might confuse them with barnacles, due to their segmented tail and valved body with a feathery appendage. They are highly specialized for parasitic lifestyle, to the point that some of them cannot produce their own nutrients by photosynthesis at all.
General anatomy of slankats Their large bodies, despite their visual bulk, are actually very light and contain only a small number of tubular organs as well as a cavity for folding the stem into it. They attach to their hosts with the help of a scaly tail, at the end of which there is a spiked anchor with the bases of root organs on the sides. The roots of slankats are thin, long and highly branched, which allows them to absorb as many nutrients as possible from the foam grass. At the top of the body there is a gill plate, with the help of which slankats breathe. Next to it there is a hole, from which emerges a flexible stem with genital organs growing on it (whip-flowers and chains of fruits). The number of whips differs for different types of slankats (from 1 to 10). These whips carry female and male reproductive cells and unction similar to flowers on earth. When the whips are pollinated, after some time they wither away and in their place the fruits begin to grow, the number of which also varies. They can grow either in a chain or in a kind of bouquet. Slancat fruits carry from two to ten embryos, and the fruit also contains chambers of gas that allow the fruit to fly away on wind currents or float on the surface of the water during floods (depending on the species, breeding cycle and season). When the fruit gets carried away to a fitting place, embryos emerge by popping out of the husk of the froot and then borrow into their host by using their tails.

Blackreach and it’s Beneficial Flora Hive-Mind for the Falmer. Thoughts/Head-Cannon
So what is Blacreach? Blackreach is a massive underground system of caves, caverns and tunnels that span underneath the holds of The Pale, Winterhold, Hjaalmarch, Haafingar and The Reach, and it’s also home to various creatures and inhabited by the Falmer. It’s most noticeable cave being it’s namesake Blackreach or in Dwemer “Fal'Zhardum Din” or "Blackest Kingdom Reaches". Now as we all know one of the most notable features in Blackreach has to be its bioluminescent walls and celling which in my opinion appeared to be some form of fungus, Lichen or Moss.
Tumblr media
Some might say these are Glowworms but these glowing ceilings appear in almost every cavern inhabited by Falmer, such as Darkwater Pass and the giant Mushroom Trees appearing in Darkfall Passage and the rest of the Vale.
Flora Hive-Mind? Uhh Explain Yourself
I’m glad you asked because it’s about to get very science-icy in here involving plants their root system/structure and chemicals. Have you ever mowed a lawn, broke a stem or tore a leaf in half? If you said yes to one of those things you would have noticed a peculiar pleasant smell. Well that’s the chemical reaction of a plant screaming in agony releasing a signal to all surrounding flora that there is an unforeseen threat that is harming them and that they should keep their guide up. And another way plants can communicate with each other is through their root system which can connect the largest of trees to the smallest blade of grass, and one of the biggest connectors in this system is… Fungus aka Mushrooms. Now this form of air communication is called Biosemiotics but particularly form is Volatile Organic Compounds. Which are chemical signals released by plants to signal plants to warm of them potential threats or to attract pollinators, and the root base communication is called Mycorrhizae in where roots and fungi are connected underground in a mostly beneficial relationship. This root/fungus base communication allows plants to share information, nutrients, water and even provide aid for damaged or sickly plants and works as a massive support group in different ways.
Also not only are the walls and ceiling of Blackreach are covered in glowing fungus but on the cavern floor stands large and almost tree like Mushrooms that tower over creatures and buildings. If these over sized mushrooms have a Taproot structure that would mean they go deep into the ground and hold it from any form of erosion, either from underground water and rivers which Blackreach has. This also goes for the long glowing tendrils that come from the ceiling and ground.
Tumblr media
Now for my Blackreach Hive-Mind theory, so while exploring the various Falmer dwellings you’ll find that various species of mushrooms from near the entrance to deep within their lair. Now although mushrooms don’t have roots they do have Mycelium, these are fungi threads that can span deep and extend miles connecting large areas of flora to a network of beneficial interest. Three places of interest in this theory are Shimmermist Cave, Lost Echo Cave and Darkwater Pass all of which are Falmer inhabited, home to glowing mushrooms and show no sign of entry to Blackreach accessible to the player, but let’s say that the Falmer Wall Holes lead to unseen tunnels and caverns that also contain glowing fungus which would mean a large network of connections back to Blackreach fungal mass. So if we use the examples of root/fungal network and how they use this to share information, resources and aid we also know that Falmer caves and Dwemer ruins are all over Skyrim, so if we used this information that would mean that the entirety of Skyrim surface area from farms, forest and meadows are connected to deep underground tunnels allied with fungus that Mycelium threads connect them to a larger network of underground ecosystems doing everything in its power to live and thrive.
(corn is know to release a chemical signal that wasps will pick up to come to it’s aid when it it’s being eaten by pest such as locust)
How does this benefit the Ecosystem?
Skyrim is a large and diverse nation when it comes to weather and its environment, but even evaluation has it’s effects on how temperatures work. But to simplify it, the Northern Parts of Skyrim are cold while the Southern Parts are Warmer but that doesn’t matter as winter will still cause frost and if Nir tilts like Earth, then night will be longer and more intense etc.
But let’s so it’s winter and most of the Flora has “died” and won’t be able to photosynthesize, well that to worry as Skyrim is full of Pine/Spruce trees which are Evergreens. That means they do not lose their foliage and have the ability to attain nutrients from the sun, and they actually share their nutrients with their dominant neighbors and they share these nutrients with the previous fungal Mycorrhizal Network. Now let’s other important nutrients from decaying plants/animals aren’t as abundant as before well the surface won’t have to worry as deep beneath the surface are large tunnels and caves filled with Falmer and Chaurus, Vale Deer, Durzogs, Trolls and insects such as Spiders, Moths, Shroom Beetles, Cockroaches, Nixads and even Gloomspore Creatures. Which are giant sentient fungal growths that take the form of animals.
So now let’s say there’s a drought in Whiterun hold the fungus in Blackreach can share much needed water and let’s say theirs a blight effecting the trees in Haafingar Hold, again the glowing fungus from the tunnels would be able to transfer that information to the network system and warm the other of a possible threat and to prepare antibodies for themselves and to send to the infected plants. As plants do in real life
How Does This Benefit The Falmer?
Tumblr media
One thing I noticed while in Blackreach is that it’s able to support Trees, Shrubs and Grasses, which would mean that the bioluminescent that is produced from the wall and ceiling glowing fungus, lichen or moss and the giant mushrooms like trees/tendrils are able to produce the same amount of ultraviolet lights as the sun. which would give the Falmer and other creatures a daily/yearly supply of vitamin D which would give them stronger bones and immune system, but that is not all. The root from the tress and mycelium from the fungus would hold the ground, cleaning and walls tightly keeping the ground above and below them steadily in place.
Also water from the surface that will be absorbed by the ground will be purified from pollutes and other undesirable materials. As roots and tightly compacted soil will work as a natural filter and provide clean drinking water to the Falmer, creatures and foliage that grows there. Also according to Elder Scrolls lore the Mushrooms that cause the blindness in Falmer are ironically extinct so that don’t have that to worry about but they do still have a large option when it comes to edible vegetables as they could grow crops like the Falmer in the Vale do.
(And if you ever had to de-weed or cut roots, you’ll know what I mean)
End
I think I written and botched enough of what I was originally thinking and thought/theorized about. I hope I made sense and that the read wasn’t boring but I had fun and I hoped you liked it too.
Also @falmerbrook was a huge inspiration and please go give them a check and read what they have to say.

A quick draft of an idea I've had for a while! I've been wanting to do some plant biology 101 stuff, but as per usual for my ADHD brain, it's really hard for me to organize projects ^^;
Image captions:
A set of diagrams titled Plant Physiology 101. There is drawing of small branch labeled "Idealized Angiosperm".
A label pointed at the tip of the branch is labeled: Apical meristem– stem cells are made here. Auxin is a plant Auxin is a plant hormone produced at growth points. Auxin is broken down or diluted by distance and by light exposure.
Another label is pointed to a small area between the base of the leaf and the main stem captioned: Axillary bud, more stem cells. Suppressed by auxin. When auxin levels drop off, the tissues grow into more phytomers.
Another illustration is shown below a header reading: Vascular plants are made of phytomers or segments of plant growth. They follow the pattern leaf, axillary bud, internode.
The illustration is of a short segment of stem detailing a phytomer is the above order listed, beginning the segment with a leaf.

Guess who’s back? Sorry for the whole going missing for a couple of days I’ve been writing a lot so I have decided to finally post and thanks to @soup-sloth for helping me to choose how I’m going to be posting the many stories I made so just a little warning cause I’m so so nice. It’s going to be angst gutwrenching sobbing you need therapy stories and then we move onto happy sweet, comfy stories.
He Grows
Somewhere between machine and miracle, a child is loved again.
Colt had never thought he’d hold Oriel again.
Not like this.
Not in a quiet room full of tinctures and vials and the faint scent of crushed mint.
Oriel slept now, curled up on a spare cot in Rowen’s shop, a blanket tucked around his half-withered frame. His hair had grown out, thin and matted in places. One hand clutched the edge of a candy wrapper. The mechanical beetle Colt once gave him rested on his chest, wings twitching faintly from the faint thrum of energy in Oriel’s chest.
Colt watched, unmoving, as the boy breathed—uneven, but alive.
Rowen, arms crossed, leaned against the doorframe. His expression was unreadable. But his eyes never left the child.
Then he spoke.
“He’s not like the others.”
Colt didn’t respond.
“He still has… self. Memory. Emotion. You said he died.” Rowen’s voice stayed even. But there was something beneath it—confusion. Awe. Suspicion. “The other risen? They don’t do this. They don’t cry. They don’t eat candy and ask for their dad.”
A pause.
“When I checked him… his cells are partially mechanical. But rooted. Not cold. There’s biology—real, but modified. And that… shouldn’t be possible.”
Colt slowly sat on the floor near the cot. His tail curled tightly, protective. His voice, when it came, was tired. Broken.
“It’s because he wasn’t… born. Not in the usual way.”
He rubbed his face, dragging his palm down like it might hold him together.
“Meksha and I… we couldn’t have kids. And we didn’t want a clone, or some vat-grown thing. So we… built him. But not just built. Meksha… he was brilliant. Smarter than any scientist who ever put a bolt in my spine.”
Rowen stayed silent.
Colt kept going. Quietly.
“He made a seed. A plant-based neural stem with nanotech properties. A core. We called it the Heartleaf. Organic enough to grow like a normal child. He had cells. Nerves. Blood. A mind. And a soul.”
His voice cracked.
“We raised him. He was our son. Real. Loved. Every fucking molecule of him.”
Rowen’s gaze dropped to the boy, now softly snoring.
“I was raised to believe artificial life is a mirror. Not a fire. It reflects. It doesn’t burn.”
He knelt. Looked closer. At the soft curve of Oriel’s cheek. At the uneven rise of his chest. At the tears crusted on his lashes from hours ago.
“But he’s warm,” Rowen murmured. “He’s still burning.”
Colt nodded.
Then Oriel stirred.
He blinked slowly, disoriented, that light grayish-blue gaze glassy but focused. His voice rasped:
“…Dad?”
Colt moved fast, instantly beside the bed. His hand cupped his son’s face, thumb brushing a smudge of oil-dirt from his temple.
“I’m here, bud. I’m not going anywhere.”
Oriel’s lip trembled. “When’s Papa Meksha coming back?”
Colt stilled.
Rowen looked away.
And for a moment—just a moment—Colt looked like he might shatter all over again.
“I’m sorry,” Colt whispered, voice barely holding. “I’m so, so sorry, Ori. He’s… he’s not coming back. I didn’t protect him.”
Oriel cried softly, curling into his dad’s chest, and Colt clutched him like salvation.
“I didn’t protect you either,” Colt breathed into his son’s hair. “But I swear—I swear on every life I’ve ever taken—I’ll never let anyone hurt you again.”
Rowen stood.
His face had returned to its usual stillness, but something inside him had shifted.
“That boy cannot exist,” he said quietly. “Not legally. Not here.”
Colt lifted his head, defiant, protective.
But Rowen shook his head.
“I don’t mean he should die. I mean… he needs to become someone else. A new name. A new story. No one can know what he was. Not the undead part. Not the Heartleaf. If Springrock authorities find out… he’ll be torn apart. Dissected. Or worse.”
Colt was quiet. He pressed his lips to Oriel’s temple.
“I know.”
“You’re agreeing fast.”
“Because you’re right.”
He looked up at Rowen, eyes shining with something bitter and resolute.
“I won’t lose him again. I’d burn this whole planet down before I let anyone take him from me.”
Rowen grunted softly. “Then we’ll give him a new name. You’ll need papers. And I’ll tweak his pulse signature.”
Colt blinked. “You’re helping?”
Rowen looked away, scowling.
“I lost siblings once. Too young. Too soft. Too bright. You see that look in his eyes? That innocent kind that only kids have? Yeah. I see ghosts when I look at him.”
He turned to leave.
“But this stays between us, Colt. No one. Not even the gang. Not unless it’s life or death.”
“I swear.”
Rowen paused at the door.
“I’ll call him ‘Meeka,’ for now,” he muttered. “Short for his late father.. Meksha right?.”
Colt turned to his son—who, despite all odds, had fallen back asleep against his chest. For the first time, there was color in his cheeks.
Colt held him tighter.
Meeka.
His son.
A miracle born twice.
This time, he wouldn’t let go.

Marble Hornet headcanons everyone come gobble em up before they get cold!!! @forgottenporkbun @monszsterz
So my headcanons for MH are a lot less conceret than those for the creepypastas cause ngl, I'm still trying to figure out wtf happened in MH. I haven't read the comics yet so I'm going off the main videos only. I've rewatched them a few times and read the theories but I'm still left with a few questions, and some theories I have fall apart when paired against certain videos SO take everything with a grain of salt. Even WORSE is I'm still playing around with how I want to write these scenarios and dynamics because they change drastically based on what theory I'm going with at the time.
Starting off, I think The Operator (TO) is doing a lot of experimentation. Each person in MH is affected differently cause no two people have the exact same type of TO disease. The closest are probably Jay and Brian, funny enough, because both were infected by Tim. Tim is patient zero for the disease in the sense that he doesn't just have it, he IS IT. Each cell in Tim's body contains a little speck of TO that, when transferred to others, can multiply and spread into a spiritual parasite. It reacts differently to Alex because he's also hand picked by TO. We know Alex had been stalked by him from an early age, maybe his whole life. When he got infected it triggered a sleeper agent type parasite in him. He's a lot more aggressive, violent, and bold. I think the difference stems from where the seed of The Operator has been planted. For Tim its the body, and Alex I honestly think its the soul. I could say mind but I actually think that applies better to Seth (and Ticci Toby but I'm trying not to include creepypastas in this rn). If the disease works through the bodies of Tim, Brian, and Jay it makes sense why normal prescription medication works to stop it. If that's the case why isn't everyone infected and wipes out the world? We were nearly at the end of MH by the time Jay started REALLY showing signs of no return. At almost any point he could have left got some medication, and probably get over it! I mean its like, entry 80 before we see him wandering around in a daze and hallucinating, right? His symptoms always get worse when he's in an infected area or around Tim for a prolonged amount of time. Jessica on the other hand seems to catch it really fast. Like REALLY fast. A single interaction in Rosswood has her just as bad as Jay, who had been on the run for almost two years surrounding himself with this shit. She has also been stalked by TO since a young age. I won't be able to get into her more until I read the comics tho.
I see a lot of people confused as to what Brian's status ends up being with both The Operator and his friends cause me too tbh. His motives are constantly bouncing around. One thing I know is he is still buddy buddy with TO. Some people say he's fighting against him but I don't get that at all from the videos. He's either using special powers he was given or TO is monitoring him and stepping in when possible to teleport him to safety. If TO is wanting followers then it makes sense he'd encourage Brian to lure Tim back into it with him. The issue is Alex is ALSO a follower. The Operator finds himself in a pickle when his girls are fighting one another. This is where I really get thrown off. An easy answer would be The Operator is an inhumane, eldrich, perhaps fae monster with no understanding of how humans really work. This, paired with the fact his followers have NO idea what he really wants them to do, means miscommunication and chaos ensue. When Tim is killing Alex in the final entries TO bounces around BOTH of them to get in their way. We know he's fully capable of tossing Tim off to the other side of the woods, or snatching Alex out of danger, but he doesn't. He's watching....I think he wants to see which style of infection is better. Tim's disease, or Alex's corruption. Which makes a better follower. This falls apart when you remember how close Brian came to killing Alex and he got saved by TO. Again you can sweep this under the rug by saying either A: He wans't done having fun yet or B: It had to be Tim. The OP doesn't give a FUCK about Jay dying, he lets him get shot and then scoops him up for devouring. Same about Brian, he lets him *fall*. They're supplemental to the game. Its all about Tim and Alex.
Now my FAVORITE headcanon of all time I use everywhere no matter WHAT...Tim is The Operator's favorite. If we wanna include pre-MH lore about Slenderman, aka his origins in the photoshop contest, then we learn he's been trying to do something like this for a very long time. Tim may be the first person ever directly infected by The Operator to live to adulthood. He may also be the first one to consistently fall back into a state of obedience, aka, a masked state where he's being crazy in Rosswood in the middle of the night. That makes him the favorite child. He is disobedient to The Operator, curses him, openly hates him, and physically fights against him throughout ALL of Marble Hornets and yet Tim never gets killed or devoured. He definitely comes close to both. I think him being teleported around is The Operator's most merciful form of punishment to shake some sense into his first follower. Its basically evil time out lmao. He just ALMOST snags two more followers in Brian and Jay but alas we know how that ends. In most people's "fix it" au, or "no one dies" au, that isn't an issue. My "no one dies" au transfers into creepypastas and the mansion and there is a direct tie in there with Ticci Toby, his similarities to Tim, their relationship, and how The Operator acts. The best way I explain it (and the way that makes me laugh the most) is saying TO is like parents who were cruel af to their eldest child, but by their youngest, they're completely different people and wonderful parents. I wouldn't call Slenderman a wonderful parent even in a very wholesome creepypasta mansion Au but he's definitely BETTER THAN WHATEVER THE FUCK WAS HAPPENING IN MH!!! This results in the younger children (pastas) having no idea why the eldest children (Tim and Brian) fucking hate their parents. Its a very good silly dynamic to wrap up the most gut wrenching, tragic yaoi I have ever watched.

Mosses are small, non-vascular flowerless plantsin the taxonomic division Bryophyta(/braɪˈɒfətə/,[3] /ˌbraɪ.əˈfaɪtə/) sensu stricto. Bryophyta (sensu lato, Schimp. 1879[4]) may also refer to the parent group bryophytes, which comprise liverworts, mosses, and hornworts.[5]Mosses typically form dense green clumps or mats, often in damp or shady locations. The individual plants are usually composed of simple leaves that are generally only one cell thick, attached to a stem that may be branched or unbranched and has only a limited role in conducting water and nutrients. Although some species have conducting tissues, these are generally poorly developed and structurally different from similar tissue found in vascular plants.[6] Mosses do not have seeds and after fertilisation develop sporophytes with unbranched stalks topped with single capsules containing spores. They are typically 0.2–10 cm (0.1–3.9 in) tall, though some species are much larger. Dawsonia, the tallest moss in the world, can grow to 50 cm (20 in) in height. There are approximately 12,000 species.[2]Moss

Mosses are commonly confused with liverworts, hornworts and lichens.[7] Although often described as non-vascular plants, many mosses have advanced vascular systems.[8][9] Like liverworts and hornworts, the haploidgametophyte generation of mosses is the dominant phase of the life cycle. This contrasts with the pattern in all vascular plants (seed plantsand pteridophytes), where the diploid sporophyte generation is dominant. Lichens may superficially resemble mosses, and sometimes have common names that include the word "moss" (e.g., "reindeer moss" or "Iceland moss"), but they are fungal symbioses and not related to mosses.[7]: 3
The main commercial significance of mosses is as the main constituent of peat (mostly the genus Sphagnum), although they are also used for decorative purposes, such as in gardens and in the florist trade. Traditional uses of mosses included as insulation and for the ability to absorb liquids up to 20 times their weight.

Sole Survivor Headcanon
Kind of OC based but it's also vague (Although Minutemen leaning) so like. If your Sole wasn't a soldier or lawyer. Or anything. Just a skill-less bastard. You might like this. Enjoy.
Sole being trusted by so many factions just for breathing is so funny actually. Like they deadass crawl out of a cave, freshly traumatised, and told they're a General? Because they helped someone? Cool, yeah, sure, uh-huh. That's a great amount of pressure to handle on top of their circumstances.
I like to think that everyone also assumes they're insanely clever. It's not that Sole isn't, per se, but everyone treats them like a genius. A prodigy. People have told Sole they understand why Preston trusted them so much because the Commonwealth 'needs their level of knowledge and intelligence to get better'. To which Sole is always bewildered, because their 'extensive level of knowledge' is just. High school level. Basic science lessons.
They know about evolution and stem cells and stuff. They know how disease and antibodies work. They're praised for changing people's opinions on vaccination when, with the help of Curie, they start a campaign to bring back vaccines. Their goal was to fight the viruses that had been brought back from near extinction from 200+ years of no healthcare system, no scientists and doctors to cure them. A tilt back in the direction of accessible Pre-War healthcare.
Sole knows history. They know what to watch out for, how to spot tension between factions. They know how to avoid more war, lessons learned from textbooks and late nights with post-it notes. They know how to piece together a scale and pin point the tipping point to stop it before shit goes down because they did a project about it on a WW1 assignment. The Great War. The irony is not lost on Sole when they contemplate that name for too long.
They're decent at Maths. Decent enough to make sure the caps and donations to the Minutemen are being put to good use. To make sure the book keeping is up to code and every cap is accounted for, and what it should be put towards. Like trying to bring back vaccines from 200 years ago. Negotiating with Vault 81 to let Curie use the old lab there goes way more smoothly when they've got the caps to make a worthy case for the cause.
Sole knows why people assume their mind is unmatched, though. In a way it is, sort of, they suppose. Since education is rare in the Post-War world, and even then it's not at the level it was Pre-War, Sole just seems smart. Everyone thinks they are.
Sole never knows how to handle it.
Are they complicit for letting people believe they're a genius? Should they keep up the charade so people listen to them? The thought keeps them up at night. Preston laughs at them for it.
MacCready reminds them of the many times they looked like a dumbass in every other circumstance where they lacked knowledge. 210 years of missing out on General Wolrd Stuff will do that to ya. It's not necessarily their fault, but he still likes to drag them for the time they got food poisoning because they didn't realise some of the new plants had to be cooked before consumption.
Every time someone acts in awe of Sole's intelligence, MacCready snickers because he was there in the early days. Sole had hired him to watch their back. Soon enough he became their mentor on how to shoot a gun properly. How to maintain it. What to eat, what not to eat, what to definetly not eat. How to make sure mole rat meat is 100% cooked. How to safely remove as much radiation as possible from water and food when you have only basic supplies. He would never think Sole is stupid. They know a lot compared to most people, but learning how to survive and knowing how to count are very different types of knowledge. No, he'd never think they're stupid. But he definetly humbles them, which Sole is actually happy about. He still affectionately calls them an idiot and reminds them of the time they tripped over their own laces, alerting the radstag they were hunting of their presence. And the food poisoning thing. And the incident with the bucket. And when they almost touched a deadly plant because they thought it would look nice in a vase they found.
Thing is, Preston taught them basics of how to shoot and fight before they left Sanctuary. MacCready picked up the workload when he met Sole and realised they'd likely get them both killed if he didn't. Cait showed them hand to hand combat and lockpicking. Everyone at some point taught Sole something. So Sole goes red from embarrassment when being complimented on their mind, because they know they're gonna get an earful from their friends later. Affectionately bullied. You know Deacon has some blackmail level information from the months he followed them. They all sit at Sole's kitchen counter and share stories of Sole's embarrassing misadventures over breakfast. That's just what a family does.
