Planning a mini post-athon for some old projects from art class to show my appreciation for it plus to see my improvement in art.
This will probably last only this week and I’ll info-dump a it about it too!
so here’s one of my faves: the Zombie hand

The assignment was to make a hand out of plaster! and too paint it and give it a tattoo.
It was a two part project with the first being to draw a tattoo design.
although I don’t have the design the hand has a few tattoos and got an A! I’m quit proud of it and I’m planning to show it off somewhere in my room soon.
Lil fun fact is the the hand pose was supposed to be similar to thing from the Addams family !

7 Times Plastering Made or Broke a Perfect Home Extension Finish

When it comes to flawless house extensions, many people focus on the layout, the build, and even the final paint colour. But one crucial element is often underestimated—plastering. It’s the final stage that brings everything together, turning rough builds into finished, livable spaces.
Whether you’re investing in loft conversions, building renovations, or full-scale home improvements, the quality of your plastering can either elevate the space—or completely ruin its potential.
Here are 7 real-world examples of how plastering either made or broke a perfect home extension finish.
1. The Extension That Looked Premium Thanks to Smooth Plastering
A homeowner in Manchester opted for a rear house extension to create a bigger kitchen-diner. The layout was modern, the fittings were high-end—but what truly impressed visitors was the ultra-smooth plaster finish.
It reflected light beautifully, gave the room a seamless flow, and made even a modest budget feel luxurious. In this case, the plastering made the extension feel premium.
2. The Loft Conversion That Cracked Under Pressure
In a rushed loft conversion, a local builder subcontracted an inexperienced plasterer. Within two months of completion, hairline cracks appeared throughout the ceiling and around window frames.
The poorly mixed plaster and lack of drying time led to shrinkage and separation—turning what should have been a dream attic into an ongoing nightmare. A clear example of plastering breaking a home improvement project.
3. The Builder Who Saved a DIY Disaster
One homeowner tried to save money by plastering their own walls after a small kitchen extension. The result? Uneven surfaces, visible trowel marks, and an amateur finish that ruined the modern design.
They eventually brought in professional builders who re-skimmed the entire room, restored the integrity of the walls, and prepped it perfectly for painting. This proves that while DIY is tempting, skilled plastering can save the final result.
4. The Renovation That Took Longer Due to Plastering Delays
In a large-scale building renovation, poor scheduling meant that plasterers were brought in too early—before all structural and electrical work had been completed. As a result, walls had to be redone after new sockets were added.
The extension was delayed by three weeks and the costs shot up. This case highlights the importance of proper project management when coordinating building conversions and plastering work.
5. The Home Office That Felt Like a Professional Studio
During the rise of remote work, a client converted their unused garage into a home office. The structure was simple, but they invested in a high-quality plasterer to create smooth, soundproofed walls.
The end result felt like a high-end recording studio or creative workspace. Clean lines and invisible joints made the room feel professional—proving that good plastering can enhance both function and style.
6. The Extension That Lost Its Charm with Bad Ceiling Work
Even the most beautifully painted walls can’t hide poor plastering overhead. In this rear house extension, the ceiling had visible lines, dips between plasterboards, and uneven finishes around the light fixtures.
Despite perfect furniture and decor, the ceiling became an eyesore and brought down the entire feel of the room. It shows how plastering isn’t just about walls—ceilings matter just as much to the finished space.
7. The Showroom-Ready Living Room with Seamless Finishing
A homeowner in London combined a loft conversion with a side return extension to create a large open-plan living area. Every inch was polished to perfection, with flush lighting, curved corners, and invisible wall joints.
The secret behind the showroom-ready finish? Precision plastering done by professionals with experience in luxury home improvements. Visitors couldn’t stop commenting on how “perfect” the space looked—thanks in large part to the finishing touch of great plastering.
Final Thoughts
Plastering may not be the most glamorous aspect of a renovation, but it is one of the most important. Whether you're planning house extensions, loft conversions, or complete building renovations, never underestimate the power of a well-plastered wall or ceiling.
Hiring experienced builders who understand the importance of proper timing, materials, and finish can mean the difference between a dream home and a costly mistake.

The Great Wall of… Wait, Why Is It Cracking?
I didn't expect to become mildly obsessed with walls, but that's what happened after a recent house project went sideways. It started out simple. We were doing some minor updates around the place, and part of that involved getting a few internal walls skimmed and freshened up. The idea was to have it all looking clean before the holidays rolled around. Seemed harmless enough.
Once the job was done, everything looked great on the surface. Literally. Smooth walls, fresh paint, no visible imperfections. It even felt good to walk into the lounge without spotting the usual bumps and uneven patches that had been annoying me for years. For about a week, I was genuinely impressed with how it all turned out.
Then things took a turn. First, there were faint lines. They showed up like the ghost of a crack—barely noticeable unless you stared at the wall in the afternoon light. I tried to ignore them at first. But those lines didn't stay faint. They widened. They spread. Then came a weird, soft bubbling along the hallway. It is the kind of thing you don't notice until one day, your sleeve brushes against the wall, and you realise the paint feels like cling wrap over porridge.
That's when I panicked just a little. I tapped at a spot, and it made that hollow sound as if there was air or moisture trapped behind the plaster. I peeled back a section—probably not the smartest thing to do myself—and sure enough, the plaster had lifted. It wasn't even bonded properly. I'm just sitting there, waiting for gravity to finish the job.
I called a few people for advice and eventually had someone come in to inspect it. It turns out there was more going on than just poor bonding. The wall underneath was a mix of materials. One section was an old timber frame, and the rest was a block. They both behave differently under pressure, and whoever did the work didn't use the proper method to handle the change in materials. On top of that, moisture had been creeping in slowly, likely from a small roof issue that we hadn't caught in time.
The signs were clear in hindsight. There were small, damp spots near the floor and that subtle musty smell that I had chalked up to the dog's bed. The moisture had nowhere to go and just sat there behind the surface, making everything soft and spongy. And since the plaster wasn't flexible enough to deal with the different wall types, it cracked right where you'd expect it to.
I also discovered another issue on the back wall where we had done some exterior plasterwork. What I thought was just dust ended up being fine, crumbling bits of plaster starting to drop off near the base. So now, both inside and outside, we need fixing. That was not in the original plan. I didn't even want to imagine how much extra it would all cost in the long run.
After a bit of grumbling and a lot of scrolling through local plastering services, I found someone who mentioned solid plastering in Auckland specifically. That caught my attention, mainly because, at this point, I wanted to be sure whoever came next wouldn't leave me peeling back another wall six months later.
Eventually, I got in touch with a team called Quality Plasterers. They weren't the first ones I contacted, but they were the ones who actually asked the right questions. Instead of just giving me a quote straight away, they asked about the structure, the material underneath, and what had already been done. I didn't get a rushed response or vague reassurance—it felt more like they wanted to get it right than get it done.
When they arrived, they took their time inspecting both the interior and exterior sections. They even picked up on a tiny leak near the guttering that I hadn't spotted, which explained the damp patch on the back wall. They removed the loose plaster, prepped the walls properly, and made adjustments based on whether the section was timber, block, or somewhere in between.
The biggest difference? They explained why each layer mattered. The base coat wasn't just slapped on. It was sealed properly. Mesh was used where needed to allow for subtle movement without cracking. And outside, the new finish looked like it had always been there. I didn't realise how much of a difference it made to treat exterior plaster differently from the inside until I saw how carefully they planned for drainage, exposure, and weather effects.
After everything was patched, repaired, and finished, I gave it a few weeks before painting—mostly because I was nervous. I kept checking for bubbles, for tiny cracks, for signs that the same problems were starting again. But nothing showed up. No weird textures, no suspicious dampness, no wall shedding its skin like a lizard. Just clean, solid plaster that felt like it belonged there from the start.
I've got no plans to become a wall inspector in my spare time, but I definitely learned more than I expected from this. If you're dealing with multiple wall types or patching up spots with old water damage, plaster repairs aren't something to take lightly. There's more to it than just smoothing things over. You need someone who understands how walls breathe, how materials move, and how to plan ahead.
And just to be clear—I didn't write this to sing anyone's praises. I'm still slightly traumatised from peeling plaster like it was a banana. But if you've got bubbling paint or fine cracks showing up where you just paid for a finish, don't ignore them. Look behind the surface. Chances are, the wall's trying to tell you something.
As for me, I'll never look at a freshly plastered wall the same way again. I still knock on them sometimes to check they sound right. It annoys everyone else in the house, but at least now I know what I'm listening for.
