Making posters for International Women’s Day
💃📝Activity title: Typing out, printing, cutting, gluing and putting up posters in the school halls for International Women’s Day 💃⏱️Duration: 4 hours (in total over the span of 3 days) 💃❓Type of activity: Service and creativity
Activity description
My classmates and I from Psychology HL class made posters of Nobel prize winner women and local women who made a big difference in our town. We printed out their names, what they did, their pictures, and all their achievements. The second set of posters was posters of the importance of feminism, showing gratitude for the feminists who stood up for women's rights and what they achieved that way.

Reflection
Creating posters for International Women's Day was an amazing experience, mostly because my friends and I learned a lot about the amazing women that our town has seen. We are grateful that we got this opportunity because it is truly a breath of fresh air whenever we are able to publicly celebrate very important women, local or not.

CAS Summary/Interim
This year was very juicy and impactful for my skills and self-development. I have endulged in a wide variety of reflections about my posts already, but if I will try to summarize all my CAS strands, so it is more coherent and understable, what has been achieved by me in this year. Creativity This was my favourite part of CAS this year, as it invloved multiple enjoyable activities for me that were closely related to my passions and hobbies. Here is a list of all my creative tasks for thois year: -3D Modelling -3D Printing -Coding -Sketches for the F1 Project -Photography All of these involved some sort of creative mindset behind them and they all helped me expand my imagination capabilities and problem solving skills. The 3D modelling and 3D printing helped me learn how to use CAD, in order to design some models and transform them into real-life objects. This enabled me to develop an engineer mindset that will help me in my future studies and career. The coding skills also contributed to this, as nowadays many problem-solutions involve some computational power or some calculation or automation possibilites. The sketches and photography enabled me to have an artistic view on the world and its intrinsic beauty and patterns. Overall creativity helped me develop a broad spectrum of skills that will be definetly useful in my future. Activity This was a very fruitful and tasty part of CAS that focused on my physical health and wellbeing that proved to be essential for my normal functioning. Activites I have done:
-Skiing -Cycling -Running -Gym -Swimming While the consistency was not always there for some activities, especially swimming unfortunately, that I have really enjoyed since childhood. I have always had a calm, relaxing feeling while being underwater, a feeling of being watched and monitored by someone or something. The most enjoyable activities were skiing, as it is a rare event, therefore it brings some new excitement to my life and is something unforgettable. This year I have learned a lot of new tricks during skiing that I definetly plan on expanding in DP2. My most consistent activity was probably going to the gym, but during mocks I have also somewhat declined in consistency, which I really regret. Running and cycling were sporadical activities, which I enjoyed, but did not treat as a real training for some goal, but rather a relaxation of some sort. Service My service this year was very quirky, but growthing. For this part of the year I could not find a consistent service and I tried new things, but later on I picked op on it. Services I did this year: -Science Picnic -Physics Circle -Helping homeless or friends As I mentioned before acquiring a consistent service, like the physics circle and science picnic, I used to change my service quite often and it was very fluid and dynamic. When I saw an occasition I applied and participated in it, for example Rasz TV, which was a project where we could send presentations about fascinating topics. Another example is helping homeless during Christmas Eve or helping my friend build his own standalone PC. On the physics circle we try to make different posters and projects for the school and its open days and scientifically promoting our high school. Another branch of physics circle is the science picninc, which is the biggest outdoor scientific event in europe, that compromises of exhibiting scientific experiments and projects. All of these services helped me create communication skills and bring me a sense of compassion for the community and people in need. I hope I can participate more in such events in the future, so I can help more people.

CAS PROJECT
INVESTIGATION
In deciding what to do for my CAS project I would like to incorporate my interests, skills, talents, and also make it an oppurtunity to grow, and develop in a certain direction. I am a person who likes to work, and cooperate with people, and would like to use this project in order to do something good for people- possibly some voluntary work, and charity.
I gathered my friends, and we began brainstorming on what would we like to do for our project. We all agreed that our project should be meaningful, and have a real-life impact focusing on the SERVICE strand of CAS. We started exploring different options of what we could do, among them such ideas as baking gingerbread cookies with kids from orphanages or organizing a bingo night in a retirement home. However, we wanted our project to not only target our local community, but address a global issue through having a real-life global impact. Hence, we decided to explore options involving working online, as that is the only way to make our project reach international grounds without traveling. We have stumbled upon the Amnesty International Letter Writing Marathon "Write for Rights" (https://www.amnesty.org/en/get-involved/write-for-rights/). We did our research on this, and decided that it would be perfect for our project.
PREPARATION
Upon deciding what we wanted to do, we begun planning. We want to organize a month-long initiative during which we will gather students, and volunteers to write letters to defend people that were wrongfully imprisoned chosen by Amnesty International for "Write for Rights".
First, we would need to inform people that such an action would be taking place, explain what would it be about, and share the information on the people that need our help. We have deicded that the best way to do it would be sharing information on our project on our school's Facebook group containing of all students in our high school. We also agreed that we should print out posters with all information about the people that need to be written letters for, and give them out to interested people, as well as hang them on the walls of our school.
ACTION
Finally, on the month of January 2025 we brought our project to life. We have informed students in our school of our initiative on the Facebook group, given out, and hanged posters. We also encouraged all if our friends to join in, and write letters. During the month, we collected letters from volunteers, and at the end uploaded them to Amnesty International. We also helped people with writing letters to specific countries, and provided them with tips on how to address the government there, what to write, and what to include in order for the letter to be impactful. In the end, we have collected about 60 letters.
REFLECTION
Looking back at our CAS project I feel really proud of what we did. Our "Write for Rights" initiative brought students together to stand up for people who were wrongfully imprisoned, and it was amazing to see how many took part. At first we weren’t sure if many students would join but after sharing our project with everyone more and more people got interested. By the end of the month we had gathered about 60 letters which was wayt more than we expected. It felt great knowing that what we did could possibly make a difference in someone’s life.
This project also made me think about how young people can help bring change. I also learned how powerful online activism can be and how it helps us connect with global issues without needing to travel. In the future I would love to organize similar projects or find new ways to keep helping people in need. This experience also showed me how important teamwork and communication are when organizing something like this. Overall, this CAS project helped me grow, gave me more confidence, and made me more aware of how much we can do if we work together for a good cause.

Every year, my school organize BaLMUN conference, Banja Luka model United Nations, on which I am one of the chairs in SOCHUM Committee.Preparations for this conference last for more than six months. One of the important things that is necessary is the design of accreditations, certificates, maps, invitations, pads, tote bags, posters and many other things, for printing. I took the initiative and offered to design everything.This year conference was also held on university level,so I made design for them also. UC San Diego Library’s Special Collections & Archives Acquires its First African Americana Collection
Collection chronicles the African American experience post-Civil War and documents migration West
LA JOLLA, CA—The UC San Diego Library announced today the addition of its first African Americana collection—the Turner Collection—to its Special Collections & Archives (SC&A). Donated by Steve Turner, a UC San Diego alumnus ‘82 and an avid collector, the collection is comprised of more than 300 items including rare photographs, pamphlets, photocards, posters and pinback buttons, many from the 19th century and all of which shed new light on the African American experience, particularly in the American West.
“We are honored to have received this collection,” said Erik Mitchell, the Audrey Geisel University Librarian. “Each piece offers a window into American history, showing a different perspective on times past—how compelling and necessary. It is our pleasure to present these materials to the UC San Diego community and public through our Special Collections & Archives.”
Turner’s focus was on a less well-known migration of African Americans to the West that preceded the great migration from the South between 1916 and 1970. His collection brings to light the story of pioneer immigrants who moved west after the Civil War and before World War II.
Turner wrote, “Their story is one of achievement, participation and the pursuit of the American dream. They range from ordinary citizens to civic leaders and include everything in between… As these items migrate from my collection, I hope that a new generation of scholars will work to flesh out new understandings of both places and peoples.”
Library staff are currently working to digitize many of the materials in the Turner Collection in order to make them readily available to the community via the Library’s Digital Collections website.
“We are confident that these materials will be highly sought after for research and instruction at the university,” said Lynda Claassen, longtime director of the Library’s Special Collections & Archives. “We plan to digitize as many of the materials as possible, thereby expanding their reach, and hope to complete the digitization by year end.”
Today, the UC San Diego Library provides access to more than 7 million digital and print volumes, journals and multimedia materials. The Turner Collection will join other prominent collections housed in the Library’s Special Collections & Archives, located at Geisel Library, including the Hill Collection of Pacific Voyages, Southworth Spanish Civil War Collection, Archive for New Poetry and many more.
While Geisel Library remains closed due to the pandemic, Special Collections & Archives is offering research appointments for UC San Diego students, faculty and staff. Research appointments are limited to requests that are not available online, or that cannot be fulfilled through the Library’s remote service offerings.
