New chapter/series update: my post-canon Olympics WIP

“Oh, anata, this is beautiful…”

Yuuri's voice petered out into a hush as he brushed gentle fingers over the image on the front cover of the scrapbook, depicting his preteen self in a relatively simple but polished black, white, and gold skating costume.

“Is this Mila’s handiwork?” he warmly asked, beaming when Viktor nodded a confirmation.

Yuuri was already looking misty-eyed, and his heart flip-flopped at this realization.

“You haven’t even opened it yet,” he teased, bringing a hand up to thumb at his lash line.

Yuuri giggled in response and then his breath hitched, presumably, at what he discovered to be on the inside cover: a photo of himself, Yuuko, Takeshi, and puppy Vik-chan at the Ice Castle, taken during the 2004 off-season (as noted in the caption). Yuuri and Yuuko were laughing at Takeshi, who looked quite disgruntled at the fact that Vik-chan was drooling all over his hand.

Opposite the first photo on the other page was another from that off-season, again depicting Yuuri and Yuuko, though this time, they were both on the ice, their arms outstretched in matching poses. The caption read: Yuuri and Yuuko imitating Viktor’s 2003-2004 Short Program .

Below the first photo were several paragraphs of kanji written in Yuuko’s neat scrawl, and below the second was another written blurb, authored by Takeshi.

“Well, here we go…I’m definitely going to cry while reading these, I can already tell,” Yuuri muttered.

Yuuri, I assume you’re reading this on the day of your Free Skate in Beijing, which would mean that today marks a whopping seventeen-and-a-half years since you first took the ice as a Novice skater at your first ever competition.

Do you remember it?!

I was mad at okaasan for almost making us late to see you – you know how she is…driving slower than a snail – but she made up for it when she showed me the ‘Viktor at the World Championships’ plushie that she’d bought as a surprise, so that I could throw it onto the ice after you finished. I couldn’t really tell what you’d thought of your performance when the music stopped and everyone applauded; you looked a little shell-shocked and your mouth went all wobbly.

But I do remember your eyes lighting up when you saw the plushie on your way to the rink boards to accept a hug from Minako-sensei. You scooped it up and pressed it to your chest, and my mom began to cry almost immediately about how adorable you looked and how proud she was of you.

Even then, Vik-chan was such an inspiration to you, and look at you, now…he’s been your coach for almost six years, and the person who’s seen you through an Olympic gold medal victory, 3 World Championship titles, 3 Grand Prix Final wins and countless other accolades.

In the newest chapter of my post-canon Olympics WIP, I wrote about Viktor finally getting to show Yuuri the surprise he's been working on with Yuuko, Takeshi, Phichit, and so many others: a scrapbook commemorating his husband's career, which will finally be drawing to a close that very same day (the day of the Men's Singles Free Skate at the 2022 Beijing Games). Viktor has been working on putting this gift together since the prior off-season, and even reached out to Yuuri's fans all over the world to include fanmail that touches upon how Yuuri's skating has inspired them.

Given that Yuuko is such an instrumental part of Yuuri's life, it seemed fitting that Viktor would have a letter from her serve as the opening of this heartfelt gift. I am excited to delve into other contributions from Yuuri's friends/family/fans and Viktor himself of course, which I'll be covering in part 8 of the overall series, which is currently at over 350K+ words and counting.

And now, for a series update:

In the endnotes of this most recent chapter upload (Chapter 20), I shared about a decision I've been deliberating over, which is to repost my series as a completely new set of works with some (minor) rewrites, shorter/more numerous chapters, and proper coding using workskins, which would make things look more polished.

To make a long story short, I began posting my Yuri!!! on Ice fanfiction nearly a year ago, and back then, there was a lot that I didn't know about how to build an audience for a longfic or use Archive of Our Own. As such, I think I made some mistakes that have ended up causing this WIP/series to not get the readership I think it could have if I'd been a bit more intentional. I also could have been way better at promoting my work on here or other platforms, and I sometimes wonder if the relatively low stats on part 1 or other parts of the series make potential readers shy away from giving it a chance, as they might assume the writing isn't good?

I haven't made up my mind about this decision, but if you're a longfic reader or writer that has experience with this kind of thing -- reposting your own work, or following along with a series that gets reposted -- I'd love to hear about your thoughts on this. I'm a bit afraid of losing my current readership if my current subscribers get annoyed with having to wait around for my works to get reuploaded, but at the same time, I sometimes see the stats on other longfic WIPs in the fandom, and feel bad about the fact that my numbers aren't higher. I know comparison is the thief of joy and all that, but I'm only human...

In any event, if you enjoy longfics and have always wondered what Yuuri and Viktor's relationship might look like a few years down the road, post-canon, I hope you'll give my series a chance. One thing I've tried to emphasize in my work is the reciprocal nature of how Yuuri and Viktor care for one another. In canon, we mostly see Viktor caring for Yuuri -- which is understandable, given their early dynamic of coach/student -- but I wanted to explore some of the give-and-take that would develop over time between them.

Summary: Ered Luin is crumbling. In order to save their families and the kingdom, the Company of Thorin Oakenshield embark on a quest to reclaim Erebor, with the help of un-Hobbitish Hobbit and traveller, Bilbo Baggins. A quest full of twists and turns, familiar faces and unknowns, together, they unearth the stories all thirteen of them hold, and relearn the true meaning of 'home'.

The plan so far: Writing up the next few chapters and edit the fic as a whole. Meanwhile, write and post other fanfics such as Stay, Stay, Stay and Crisis Averted. If everything goes to plan, WTHI should be finished by mid-late summer or early August.

Possible edits: Besides grammar corrections, I am planning to alter the scene where Dori and Bilbo reunite with the Company in the trees. I also plan to tweak some wording in order to set the Company's relationships with each other in the way I want it. I'd also want to tidy up the timeline if possible.

Possible subjects for the next arc: Oh lord, I already have a whole list in my notes app. Looking at the first few subjects, the most likely ones are writing about the reconciliation of Gloin and Tauriel, Dwarrow conspiring that Bilbo is a spy, and further addressing the trauma amongst the Company.

Other notes: Just — thank you to everyone who read, kudosed, commented, reblogged, or simply just interacted with my work. Writing this fic has been truly gratifying for me, and has been a reason why I wake up in the morning. I cannot express into tangible emotions how I appreciate each and every one of you, so I hope that it could just practically radiate through the screen. Thank you all again.

this was originally planned as a """""drabble"""""" by my dm and i. i never expected it to be longer than 100k. didn't want it to be over 200k. and i'm absolutely disgusted with myself that it ended up being almost 350k. i, infamously, have no self-control

i worked on this for nano 2024, achieving 104,013 words in the month of november. yes, i was unwell

i also did an impromptu february (2025) nano for this fic, achieving 60,651 words in 26 days before reaching the natural conclusion of the fic. yes, i'm still unwell

there were several polls going in our discord server to see what the grand total of word counts would be. the reward was one free re-roll

the player who voted for 500k+ refuses to read any of it, and is being subjected to a reading comprehension quiz as a result

the upload schedule of the fic (every friday) is based on our dnd schedule

to keep things fair and fresh, i rolled dice to determine certain outcomes, particularly when these two fools were lying to each other; nix consistently lost (the dice rolls were incredibly poetic)

even though eberron is a steampunk setting, my main influences for gem lean more towards old hollywood (1930s; e.g., vivian leigh, lauren bacall, and barbara stanwyck [in ball of fire, specifically])

gem is 6'0"; nix, in their true form, is 6'2"

kittie is another PC in the campaign; she is a gnome artificer

the ice cream chain that nix and gem frequent is called raskin bobbins and has 13 flavors; this is a recurring chain in our actual campaign (one of our side quests is now finding the secret remaining flavors, since there are rumored to have been 31, once upon a time)

i'm not tech-savvy enough to figure out how to get the actual fonts over to AO3, so here are the fonts that are used for nix and gem's handwriting

there are several campaign secrets hidden in this piece; gem is always cagey about her past, but knowing that several of the other players may read this means that i couldn't be as forthcoming as i would have been, otherwise

TRIVIA WITH SPOILERS:

although she wouldn't have it at the time of this fic, gem gets the Lucky feat at level four, playing into the ongoing elements of luck/fortune throughout (it's my personal hc that she siphons luck from other people)

the funniest dice roll was for chapter 16: nobody's fool(ed); i rolled a luck check to determine how well they could keep their relationship under wraps from the rest of the gang; they rolled a 2

gem's love poems have been a running joke in the campaign; they were reverse-engineered to have started with nix

nix's hatred for smoke was also reverse-engineered based on canon events in the campaign (gem left a love note for smoke at velvets, with the receptionist, just to stir the pot; come to find out that smoke got run out of sharn for the contents of that poem, which were just as egregious as any of her other poems)

i rolled to see if gem knew about the beef between nix and smoke; she rolled an 18 (so, yes, she did ruin his life on purpose, thanks for asking; although, i didn't know about it when she initially left the poem [i don't think i had even started writing the fic at that point iirc])

the reason one was ready to shank nix for ordering the chicken quesadilla ice cream flavor is because sine would only eat a meal if there was chicken in it (this also applied to ice cream), and it upset one to such a degree that they were permanently traumatized; they thought they had escaped that hell when sine abandoned the gang, but, alas

gem's "brash accent" is vaguely based on a new yorker's; her natural accent is posh english

nix and gem dated for a cumulative ten months; they knew one another for about 1.5 years

while not outright confirmed, it was the dm's idea that one and lite have had something going on; nix never knew for sure, and, as a result, gem didn't, either (which means i don't, which is actually so rude)

Currently these are my Drarry stories (not including drabbles), Scarry (including drabbles), Other Slash pairings, and Het pairings. I will be adding My gen fics, gift drabbles, etc... as I get more time. Most can all be found on AO3 right now but just not organized. :)

Just a quick note about commenting on my fics. I love comments and to engage with my readers. If you have a question, comment, or whatever I'm open to discussion. As long as it's not a flame, I'll usually respond back. I do ask that you read my tags, warnings, and notes as many of my fics contain controversial genres and situations. I don't bite or even claw so feel free to inquire.

Hi! Welcome to my HP fanfic collection. I became an HP fanfic reader in 2005 and then writer in 2006. I took an almost decade break in 2012 but put my toes back into the waters now and then to respond to comments or make a post on LJ. I came back into fandom full force in June 2021 when I signed up for HP_fan_fair. H/D, HPDM, or Drarry has always been my OTP, but Scarry is my second. But I also love to write the rare-pair now and then along with gen short stories. I've separated my fics out by my writing era and then by ship.

All of my fics are individually rated and have warnings. However, we did rate and tag things differently back in the day, so if you think I should add a warning or tag, send me a message. I assure you, there were no bad intentions involved.

My Drabbles can be assumed to be G to PG, unless otherwise noted. I love writing drabbles and I hope that some readers will take the time to look at a few of them. *g*

Most of my stories are now posted on AO3 and are not to be copied to any other site without my permission. (historically they were originally posted on various HP fanfic sites. Majority of H/D were on Hex Files.

As I was a prolific writer back-in-the-day (2006-2012) and then took a very long hiatus (10 years), I'll be listing my current stories first. After that, it will be a mishmash of ships and gen. I hope you find something you like!

(2024)

Drarry (Harry/Draco) & Haphne (Harry/Daphne)

The Azkaban Letters (WIP 2024): This WIP was started in 2007 and picked back up in 2023. It is still being updated. Currently 39/42 chapters (as of 11/27/24).

Summary: Harry and Draco’s lives are headed in two different directions. One is destined for death or glory, while the other is going to Azkaban. Harry needs answers, and he goes to visit his Slytherin nemesis while being held for trial. The meetings in a barren, white cell changes Harry’s life. He learns the beginnings of his rich family history that had been denied him. And that there's much more to fight for than just ridding the world of Voldemort. HBP compliant.

Note: This fic was started before HPDH was released. It is canon divergent after HBP. This fic has two Main Pairings and both are treated with respect and will have a happy ending. I chose to use AO3's: Creator Chose Not to Use Archive Warnings because of the underage sexual scenes (all are 17 and consensual).

What Doesn't Happen in Venice Stays In... (Autumn 2024) written for @hd-fan-fair's H/D Muggle Fair (2024) (self-prompt of Honeymoon gone awry) I started this fic in 2009 and it stayed in my WIP folder until now! Yay for completing works started.

Summary: After a whirlwind year of dating, Harry and Draco are getting married. Never mind that their friends and every reader of the Daily Prophet disapprove of their being together. But ignoring all of them, they believe in each other. Draco, on his part, gleefully takes on planning their honeymoon. The week they were to spend in Venice was scheduled down to the hour. It was perfect, according to Draco. But we all know what happens to the best laid plans. Will their marriage survive the first day? Will friendships with others ever recover? Will there be a happy ending? Of course, there will be, but hold on for the ride.

Rating: Explicit Wordcount: 13.4K Warnings and Enticements: Established Relationship, Implied Sex while using Polyjuice Potion, Ronsy meddling.

Pansmione (Pansy/Hermione)

The Supergrass (Valentine's 2024) written for HP Sapphic's Valentines (prompt Auror/Criminal)

Summary: For the past year, Auror Hermione Granger has been coming monthly to Sister Hildegard's Wellness Emporium (attached to St Mungo's) for her Healer-ordered full-body massage because of work-induced stress and injuries. It was the perfect cover for meeting with the DMLE's main supergrass, Pansy Parkinson, who was now a trained masseuse thanks to the Ministry's Criminal Rehabilitation Act. An Act that Hermione Granger had pushed for through her connections at the Wizengamot. A contractual promise was made to Pansy that after one year, if her information led to the arrests and convictions of wanted Dark Wizards, her court-ordered probationary period of ten years for supporting Voldemort and those that served him, would be reduced to time already served. She would be free from all Ministry restrictions.

Today, Valentine's Day, is their last meeting.

Note: Supergrass is a British slang term for an informant who turns King's evidence, often in return for protection and immunity from prosecution.

More Than A Legend (Christmas 2023) A Drarry Christmas Story

Summary: Harry volunteers to be Father Christmas at Hogwarts, without truly understanding what it entails.

The first 5 chapters of this fic were written in 2009. I finally completed the final 2 chapters in 2023. In addition, the amazing Ihopeyoustaysafefromharm Illustrated this fic (FTH). This fic is a lot of fun and filled with Father Christmas Cheer!

Rating: Mature Wordcount: 18K Warnings & Enticements: Romance, Explicit Language, Sexual Content, Christmas Legend, Mentions of: Animal Sacrifice, Slavery, and Prostitution. Liberties taken with historical accuracy of Christmas' origins.

Terminal Lucidity (Autumn 2023) written for hd_career-fair

Summary: Harry leaves his Auror position when his dreams drive him to a new profession. One that brings peace to the soul before Death arrives.

This is one of my shortest but probably on of most impactful fics. It was written for gnarf and deals with caring for someone at the end of their life (not Harry or Draco). Harry is the Master of Death.

Rating: Gen Wordcount: 3.2K Warnings: MCD. Enticements: Harry and Draco become a couple later in life. In this fic, they are probably in their early 50s and have merged their families. The whole family will miss their beloved Nana Narcissa.

(2022)

Drarry

The Roommate (Winter 2022) written for @hd-erised

PODFIC of the Roommate, (Autumn 2024) narrated by the fabulous Cailynwrites (AO3). Honestly this is a gem. 4 1/2 hours.

Summary: After one year in Azkaban and two years of home arrest, Draco is going off to college. Myrrdin College is Oxford’s magical college, where one Harry Potter is currently attending. Both are going for their teaching certificates with Draco specialising in Potions and Harry in Defence Against the Dark Arts. The Headmistress has insisted all incoming professors must be degreed. However, the Board of Governors insist that Draco also must live in a Muggle house with limited allowance and take Muggle elective courses before he can become Hogwarts' new Potions Professor. Harry is coerced by others into helping Draco Malfoy survive in the Muggle world.

This is a soft fic. I wouldn't say fluffy as there are major subjects discussed and dealt with but angst between the two is not present. Harry's goal is to make Draco fall in love with the Muggle world...and he might have succeeded to well. So wrap yourself up in the warm blanket of The Roommate, oh and Scamp the cat, too!.

Rating: M Wordcount: 42K Warnings: This fic contains a brief fatphobic comment, implications of past food insecurity, and references to past corporal punishment of a child. In addition, mentions of Trichotillomania and lice are briefly discussed. Enticements: Scamp the cat, Draco learning about Muggle appliances, Blaise insisting Draco watch Legally Blonde.

Eight Days a Week (Summer 2022) written as a chapter fic...just because.

Summary: This is foremost a love story and second it's about those growing up years. Becoming adults with adult lives and adult decisions. Yes, Harry's a Trainee-Auror and Draco's a Healer-in-Training after the war. Yes, Harry eventually moves into 12 Grimmauld Place. Ok so, I know I rarely post anymore bc.. reasons (uni is killing me & I even had to step away from my own long ass fic for a tiny bit) BUT if you are in the market for a delectable, truly masterfully written fic as you scroll through the The Devil Judge content on ao3, lemme introduce you to the (ongoing, mind u) 200k+, post canon of your dreams: Who Holds The Devil

written by the lovely @amethystinawrites (who’s also a great artist btw, check dem cool creations out @lienwyn), the story follows the classic, superior introspective format that we all love to find at 3am on a weekday with an early wake up call the following morning, which is Unreliable Narrator 101 (clearly).

I wanted to introduce you all to this lovely fic bc I recently caught up with the latest chapter (23) and I wanted to publish the notes I’ve taken for (almost) each update of the plot. I could have easily cut to the chase and posted them in a neatly wrapped comment on ao3 but... you’re talking with the danmei extraordinaire who just reached 350k on their own ongoing gay little fictlet so....... you KNOW my notes would have not been able to fit into the character limit of ao3 comments, right??

so what you will find below is just the product of my live-reaction to some of the stuff I’ve read in the fic. without context, they won’t make much sense to you BUT there will be spoilers for both the ending of the kdrama AND for the aforementioned fic so. BACK AWAY NOW and I would love you all regardless.

this is a spectacular work, it reads fluently, has alternative titles, ~glucose fathers~, helps coming to terms with some truly disturbing shit drama-wise while simultaneously making it easier for the reader to see how much of an unreliable (and gullible? at times? bby u need some railing soon. we got u boo) narrator the protagonist actually is AND it includes a kitten (nothing new for the drama fans, but still, who says no to kittens?).

if you still aren’t sold on this beauty or you haven’t seen the drama, please go do that as soon as you can. personally I think there ARE a few things that made me uncomfortable in the drama (if you know you know, that Texas twist was uncalled for imo), but if you love Villains and Anti-heroes plotting their plotty plots, pretty, older, EVIL ladies (with the occasional younger sinnamon cinnamon roll), BlackMirror-esque scenarios but on steroids, fabulous dramatics and charismatic idiots... then this is the show for you.

which brings me back to the actual reason I decided to write this post! under the cut there are the (short, admittedly) chapter-by-chapter notes I’ve written while reading Who Holds The Devil, so if you don’t know the fic in question and were intrigued enough to check it out thanks to my great pitching abilities (*oneshots an entire bottle of coke as they laught nervously*), then you go do that and then come back to read the notes.

it’s nothing huge, really. my last chapter in my own fic received some great comments from some truly lovely readers and I felt energized by their earnestness, enough to plan to do smth nice myself for an author I admire. I have generally little time to read fiction these days, since I research heavily for my fics and all, so I really wanted to take the time to appreciate this precious thing.

(chapters 1-23)

ch.1:

as i’m reading this, i can sense the crushing loneliness and grief and how sometimes your life could orbit around a small cat because it’s the only thing keeping u sane. i have experienced smth similar after my grandparents’ passing last year and i can feel it here as well.

ch.2:

seeing how Ga On cares for Elijah made me tear up. he’s so fond of her. author is very smart about communicating these small things that make life worth living;

i like how the author writes dreams: the way they turn into nightmares when Ga On gets a little too close to realise smth, the way they turn to smth feeble at the edges of his understanding of them;

the remorse Ga On feels for wishing Yo Han to get hurt at Elijah’s expense is so palpable, i hadn’t even considered that while watching. there were so many things happening at once. but author must have thought deeply about it and it shows;

the “feeling guilty for crying” part resonated with me a lot;

Ga On needing friends and human connection? reminds me of when i self-isolated for an entire year with my family and didn’t speak to anyone else, not even texting;

wanting to do everything alone? me and my three-year recovery from burnout would agree if we weren’t little stubborn bitches

ch.3:

loneliness makes u colder, there’s a scientific explanation for it but it fails me now. Ga On looking for warmth seems appropriate;

i like the part where Ga On admits to himself the future he would have had with Soo Hyun was hazy at best. it doesn’t detract from how much she meant to him, but i think honesty is a good way to honour her memory

ch.4:

author smart, every question seems reasonable and well thought out, my understanding is limited but all sounds very compelling;

Yo Han u sneaky bitch treat yo self, have some fun

ch.5:

judge Oh.. i’ve missed her, i was so keen on seeing how she was doing after everything that happened;

the guilt for “forgetting” about thinking of someone is very real: i’m glad to see a character going through the same things i have experienced, it makes me feel less alone in my past struggles and the perception i have of them;

the part of deserving pain and misery felt also very real;

i miss Soo Hyun too;

this fic makes me feel drained after each new chapter but in the same way the movie “The Farewell” does, helping me work through my own grief one sobbing session at a time. gotta love it

ch.6:

i have the biggest crush on judge Oh and the author is making it worse;

distance make the heart grow fonder for real y’all…;

Yo Han lives in survival mode at all times and i can relate to that;

Ga On is such an unreliable narrator i want to call him an idiot sandwich to his face but he’s too compassionate for me to be this cruel to him;

i know the rituals are intricate, i know they are;

(sudden thought: i really really want to see Yo Han tipsy or drunk. i want him to be funny like only old men can be while making a fool of themselves);

ch.7:

competence is a good look on Ga On. i should learn from him and try to make friends;

communication is not their stronger point;

stepping away from trauma and from codependency from your child is hard to work through, but Yo Han is trying;

author is very smart about manipulation tactics (but also, self-doubting idiots). i am impressed

ch.8:

“friends” sounding wrong is so funny to me: how do u even relate to someone like Yo Han in a normal context??;

that talk about the “imagined grief” ah yes, i play at that game sometimes. it’s horrifying. and this is perhaps the second time i see it explored in the 10 years i’ve been reading fanfictions… well done author;

started reading in loud-whisper now: that’s when u know the plot is good;

that admission was so raw, i love it;

Yo Han is running away ah!;

“are you punishing me?” i am frothing at the mouth. author deserves treats;

(reader is distracted by the dialogue but so far Yo Han is doing his best to explain himself and we are HERE for it);

Yo Han has encyclopaedic knowledge on human emotions but people are not that easily predictable;

oh my god Kang Yo Han, you cannot simply ask people why they can’t get a grip so that you can be with them (eye roll);

Soo Hyun knew Ga On so much they didn’t need words between them… he needs to practice now;

this boi can fit so much possessiveness i swear!

this feels like beauty and the beast, reminding Yo Han of his humanity and all;

and i love the fact that Elijah doesn’t make the connection right away. feels normal. organic. i remember how unaware i used to be at her age about adults and their business, i was too busy dealing with my denials and traumas.. so yeah, i like this outcome. it’s also a fresh thing to read, especially since i’m using the match-making trope in my current fic and i’m having fun planning how to overrule it entirely ahah. playing with reader’s expectations is FUN 😈🔥

Destiel fic recs #3 - the (mostly) longfic edition!

It’s been a while since my last rec post - mostly because I’ve been wallowing in a number of longer fics (50-350k!) so it’s taken me a while to have enough to talk about in one post (and boy do I talk a lot, here!)

With these longer fics, I do sometimes have some caveats with my recs - or at least reasons why they might not appeal to every Dean/Cas reader. But note that if I didn’t overall strongly recommend reading the fic I wouldn’t include it in my recs here at all, so any quibbles I bring up are minor compared to my overall enjoyment of the stories. Just, I don’t want someone to commit to a long read without knowing what they’re getting into and why it might not be their thing.

I’m still not into reading complete setting AUs at this time, but a lot/most of these are canon-divergence AUs, often written/set at the end of a season and giving an alternative take on what happened next. I love those kind of stories, as it’s often so interesting to see how fans thought of what might happen in the next season (especially when it’s better than what we actually got.)

Onto the recs & discussion behind the cut!

The Sinking Ship by UnfortunatelyObsessed (114k). This is a story that ripped my heart to pieces (in a good way!). I stayed up all night to finish reading because I simply couldn’t stop once I started on it and it gave me a massive fic hanger from all my emotions. Season 14 divergence, imagine if Dean did go into the Ma’lak box to trap Michael under the ocean with him forever...and once there, he discovers that Cas has stowed away with him. Because of course Cas would never leave Dean to such a fate on his own.

I loved literally. Every. Damn. Thing. About this fic. Cas telling Dean stories to pass the (endless) time. Their small intimate moments while realizing they can never consummate physically while trapped in the box but finding every other way to express their love. The absolute heartbreak that had me SOBBING when Michael fights for control of Dean and destroys everything they’ve built together and Cas thinks he’s lost Dean forever. Sam & Gabriel & Rowena & Claire & Jack doing everything they can to devise a plan back home to try to save them both while keeping Michael trapped. Also even just the wonderfully sensitive portrayal of aroace Jack still closely bonded with Claire and Maggie and just. And just. This is a story I’ve already re-read just to savor how much I loved it and its portrayal of everyone in TFW 2.0 and their extended family, it just hit my id in all the most incredible ways and I have nothing but absolute love for this one.

Beautiful Chaos by anyrei, mugglerock (141k). Season 9 canon-divergence, in which Dean doesn’t simply abandon Cas to fend for himself post 09x03. Instead he sets Cas up in a kind of squatter’s nest in an abandoned building near the bunker so he can keep tabs on him and help him out.

This fic definitely gets the award for FILTHIEST, HOTTEST, SMUTTIEST Dean/Cas (and Cas/other) I’ve read in, like, ever, for human!Cas turns out to be a rather insatiable sex fiend/cock slut and Dean is too up his own repressed ass to easily give Cas what he wants/needs. It is dark at times, Cas ends up in some very unsavory/non-con situations, and the authors do mention that they tried to hone in on endverse!Cas’s characterization more than what we saw in Season 9...so you might roll with it, you might not. I adored their original character Jerry the tattoo artist in this, and like I said it was seriously hot (if you are good with total bottom!Cas and Cas with others, I know those are not everyone’s cuppa). I did have a few minor issues. For one, the last chapter felt a bit rushed and hand-wavey, but clearly the authors weren’t fond of the canon conflicts of season 9 & 10 (Abbadon, Mark of Cain) and just wanted to be done with them. Can’t say I really blame them. And I did have to laugh a bit at Lebanon, Kansas apparently having such a bustling gay bar/tattoo artist/etc scene being someone from a butt-fuck nowhere American small town myself. But, SPN was never all that realistic in how Lebanon was shown (and yes I’ve spent too much time roaming around it on Google maps), so if you can suspend some disbelief this is an awesome hot/angsty/occasionally heartbreaking read.

These Forsaken Lands by destielpasta (53k). I came upon this story when looking for fics that dealt in some way with the aftermath of Godstiel. This is a wonderfully atmospheric late Season 9 “fill-in” case fic (post Meta-fiction) where Cas ends up in a small town that had been visited by Godstiel...and while initially residents have reaped much good fortune, there has suddenly been a wave of deaths/bad events and he is determined to find out what happened and set things right. He calls upon Dean for help, but Dean is fighting the Mark of Cain and it’s going to take a lot to get past its control and find a way out for both of them. Together they work on repairing an old church while trying to repair each other and their damaged relationship.

I loved this story for how well written it was, really invoking a gothic small-town/Americana atmosphere. The original characters blend in very well with the case-fic at the center of it, and the author deals really well with Cas at a very fragile point when he’s running on borrowed grace and trying to navigate Dean’s MoC-enhanced anger. It’s Dean/Cas but actually much more of a Cas character study, so I highly recommend it to my fellow/compatriot Cas-girls who love a good wallow in his head.

Mixed Emotions by Tierra469 (50k). Canon 12 “parallel” fic that then goes canon-divergent with the season finale. I actually stumbled on this while in the mood to read some Cas/ or & Mary fic after enjoying their interactions in Season 12 (don’t hate me). This is sort of two fics in one. The first half focuses mostly on filling in the gaps with some critical S12 Cas episodes, especially Cas & Mary’s developing friendship (and one night of something more). But of course Cas’s feelings for Dean (and vice-versa) are always there, and when Cas figures out a way to get his powers fully back, the question is if Dean can open himself up to be vulnerable - and express love - the way Cas needs for this to work.

This was an interesting fic in a lot of ways. I loved the author’s take on angels’ connections to their vessels and grace, it was very consistent in a way the show sometimes/often wasn’t. Cas is very Cas in not understanding privacy and personal boundaries (so he does some questionable things, admittedly, which might squick some readers). The smut is fucking HOT - though I will caution at one point it involves Cas temporarily in a younger (NOT underage) female vessel (and the story does point out Dean’s discomfort with this and some of the consent issues involved, I don’t want to spoil too much). I wanted the Mary plot resolved more than it was, but I still recommend this story strongly for the quality of the writing and unique/well-developed take on angel lore and mechanics that was quite different from what I’m used to reading.

We Are Either Here Or Not Here by petramacneary (54k) A post-season 12 fic that goes on a different tangent to how Cas returns, and what happens in the meantime. Particularly, it offers a different take on what apocalypseverse!Cas would be like—as Mary makes her own way back from that world with AU!Cas as her prisoner.

What I loved about this story: first off, BAMF!Mary is awesome here. Dean is so heartbreaking, not quite knowing what the fuck to do with this different Cas who at times is just a painful reminder of who/what Dean’s lost...but then becomes a chance for Dean to say and express some of the things he always was afraid to in the past. And when (real/our) Cas finally returns, there’s some very interesting stuff that happens with both Cas & AU!Cas and Cas & Dean that I don’t want to spoil. (And let’s also just say that when real!Cas and Dean finally get together it’s AMAZINGLY awesome. Like, hot Impala!sex. So is the artwork that goes with this story.)

You Can Keep Holding On by NorthernSparrow (353k) The longest fic I read this time around and probably the one I have the most mixed feelings about, but a while on I do keep thinking about parts of it so I do rec it with some caveats. This is a canon-divergence after the end of Season 11. Dean & Sam find Cas after he’s been blasted out of the bunker...to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Mary isn’t in this one except for a brief appearance/visit, which Dean thinks is Amara’s gift to him. Life seems good for a while, they’re enjoying dealing with mundane problems for a change, but then Cas seems to be pulling away from the brothers, spending less and less time with them at the bunker, taking a mundane job at another Gas ‘n Sip, and clearly preoccupied by something else. Or is it someone else? Dean is worried yet finally ready to accept that Cas maybe has a girlfriend, or a boyfried, but then it turns out that is not at all what Cas has going on. It’s something far more serious than that.

Honestly I almost stopped reading when the reveal happened - it’s a subject that’s very sensitive to me from personal/family experience and not something I usually like reading in fic (especially if there is a sad ending.) So I admit I jumped ahead to read how it would end first before committing to finishing it. And I am glad I did, because the author handles the subject matter with a realism and obvious knowledge of experience as well, not how I often see it in fanfic. There are a lot of emotional ups and downs but it’s nice seeing Dean in his momma-hen/mode, and Sam is so so good in this one! I think I enjoyed Sam’s characterization here most of all! And the author has a really cool/well developed angel/wing lore that hit my wing-kink pretty hard. I do think it could have all been edited down a bit - I found myself skimming parts, especially in the last third, just to get on with things. But it’s definitely a story you can disappear into for a good long time and I’ve bookmarked the author’s other works to read later, so again, I do rec it even with a few caveats.

A few shorter fics, too, just because I don’t want to forget about them...

Eleven Erogenous Zones of a Fallen Angel by almaasi (15k) Pure gratuitous wing!kink for me :) Cas uses the last of his grace to manifest his wings...but then is stuck with them in his human form and not even able to use them to fly as he used to. This presents a lot of awkward problems to deal with but also the excuse for Dean to help him keep them clean :) I did say wing kink, right? :D :D I loved how Cas seemed confused about the pleasure signals he got from bathing vs. sex vs. grooming and all of that. It’s sweet and hot and has my favorite kind of caretaking Dean in it.

Fossil Tracks by SegaBarrett (3k). Dean & Sam & Cas and dinosaurs. How can you go wrong with that? One of the SPN stories from the Id Pro Quo collection I really enjoyed reading (and didn’t write myself, lol).

I don't think I have a single one. I love writing angst, but I don't love ending on it, I like it to go somewhere distinctly happy. That might have more to do with Betty and Jughead than like, any ship I might ever write for, but I only write them, so...

What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

I mean I wrote a 23k sappy af ending to revelation and it felt like the most cathartic to write of all my happy endings. I for sure cried multiple times in the process.

Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

No, and I guess never say never? But I love an AU. I did write a arrested development AU drabble that felt a little unhinged lol.

Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Not a lot, I have gotten a couple comments that hit me kinda weird, but only one I've ever deleted because someone was annoyed at me for something I had tagged and mentioned several times in authors notes, at which point... like just don't. Get a hobby, yo.

Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Yes, though "what kind" is... I'm not sure? As loveleee said, usually more of the M territory than E? I guess I would say I don't write a ton of smut for the sake of smut, it usually has a purpose to the characters/story. (But don't get me wrong, smut for the sake of smut is great and I read it readily.)

Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Yes, but the people of Ao3 are good people and took it down very quickly after I emailed them! I only found it by accident, but this person had plagiarized another bughead fic as well. It felt very violating and upsetting, but also relieving to get justice. Google your own fic every once in a while, I guess?

No.

Have you ever co-written a fic before?

With the one and only @heartunsettledsoul! Listen, that fic is very fun to write, but we are both eternally burying ourselves in projects. But it will continue :)

What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Nothing I've posted, I try not to post anything I don't intend and have a plan to finish. I have two unposted WIPs that I very much plan to post and finish but I'm trying to avoid writing another fic that takes me two years and change to finish, so I'm trying to push them both further before posting.

I guess I have two shorter WIP ideas that may or may not ever turn into something but I also never want to say never!

What’s your writing strengths?

While plotting is not *easy* for me, I also love a plot that snaps together like a puzzle, without becoming dominated by the plot alone. Character driven plot, perhaps. Reflecting on comments I receive, I think tone and pacing are another, and all of this is probably why I gravitate towards more long form fic than one shots.

What’s your writing weaknesses?

Repetitive action verbs. Run on sentences. A lot of nitty gritty technical stuff. Sometimes wanting a particular self-indulgent moment or comment and while fic is certainly a place to be as self-indulgent as you want, sometimes it doesn't work. Also, trusting things to be conveyed by showing-not-telling is hard, and sometimes I drift into doing both, which feels like overkill.

What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I don't do it much, some Spanish via Veronica, I guess, and then I often use a lot of phrases that I am familiar with/know are used colloquially. (I don't speak Spanish well but I am immersed in a bilingual space daily via my job.)

What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

For the sheer effort/blood/tears, a revelation in the light of day. For something I just still get a *nailed it* feeling about, years later, in case I stand one little chance. And honestly, the one I'm working on now is a Western-ish AU have been dreaming up for over a year, I'm psyched out of my mind about (if I can figure out how to plot the last 30%)!
