Yeah! Bren Cameron, running like his life depends on it, breathing like a bellows, stopping now and again to catch his breath, while his aishid of four large, heavy, well-armed and -equipped Atevi trots along at a relatively quick pace because they need to be somewhere else quickly and relatively quietly.

The artist claims this is from Defiance, the 22nd book in Cherryh (and Fancher)'s eventually now octet of trilogies, God willing.

But really, this could be from any of them, the vibe is immaculate, sometimes it's 2 of his aishid, sometimes there's also a small Atevi boy who is rapidly getting to be taller and broader than Bren himself, but as Donna Noble once said:

"He saves planets, rescues civilizations, defeats terrible creatures ... and runs a lot. Seriously, there is an outrageous amount of running involved."

So this is not part 16 but a few sketches I made while re-reading the fanfic Defiance. It’s like really really good. I’m thinking about finishing the last sketch and maybe post more sketches/ unfinished work.

The team is captured and lined up in front of their captors. The most defiant among them, of course, cannot keep their mouth shut. They mock, taunt, and jeer till one captor has had enough.

They grab the whumpee by the throat, asking if they really want to die like this. The whumpee bares their teeth with a defiant smile.

And spits directly in the captor’s face.

defiant whumpee that is brought low, becoming weepy and pliant not after physical torture or stress, but by seeing one of their friends / trusted or loved ones seem to be friends with their whumper. it's the shock, to disbelief, to just being stunned into silence. they have no way of checking this information (on account of being captive or otherwise separated) but the seed of doubt has been planted regardless.
