Note: NICE uses registry key HKLMLotusNotesPath todetermine where Notes is installed.It also checks for the Expeditor location in case it was installedto a different location than the Notes programfiles.

Considerrunning NICE in the following situations:

Clean install -- Remove the existing Notes installation, and clean the registry,to prepare for a clean install.

Failed install -- Detect the install version (release) from theregistry and clean up registry settings and files on the system toprepare for a clean install of the same release.

Failed upgrade -- Detect the install version (release) from theregistry and clean up registry settings and files on the system toprepare for a clean install or the upgrade release.

Failed uninstall -- Detect the version (release) from the registryand clean up registry settings and files on the system to preparefor a clean install.

For all situations, the following occurs:

If a Notes version is not detectedin the registry but files exist in the default location , you areprompted to remove those files from disk.

Forexample, if there is no entry for Notes inthe Add/Remove Programs dialog box, NICE detects whether there isa key in registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARELotusNotes,gets the PROGDIR and DATADIR information from the registry, and doesthe deletion. If there is no key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWARELotusNotes,NICE does nothing.

If there is no Add/Remove Programs entryfor Notes, but there are registrykeys in either HKCUSoftwareLotusNotesInstaller or HKLMSoftwareLotusNotes,you can remove those registry settings. For example, if there is noAdd/Remove Programs entry for Notes,NICE gets the PROGDIR and DATADIR information from HKLMSoftwareLotusNotes andcontinues to remove program files, remove shortcuts, and clean theregistry.

Locate and run the NICE tool; double-click the nice.exe executablefrom the Notes install kit's Utility subdirectoryor run nice.exe from a command line.

Thetool checks for an existing Notes installation,informs you what version is installed, and enables you to specifyremoval options.

Optional: Enable Remove all programfiles to remove applicable files and folders in the ProgramFilesIBMNotes directory.

Note: All ProgramFilesIBMNotes directory contents are removed except the ProgramFilesIBMNotesData subdirectory.

Optional: Enable Remove all datafiles to remove the user's data directory, as specifiedin the registry.

Note: The Remove all data files checkbox is disabled when Notes isinstalled in multi user mode.

Click Remove to delete the filesspecified by the selected options.

Note: If neither optionis enabled, the tool removes only the registry entries, stops services,and leaves all the files on disk.

Respond to any confirmation prompts.

A progress bar indicates the progress of the cleanup process.When cleanup is complete, the NICE user interface closes.

Clojure programming world: libraries and other tools

With the vibrant tech community, Clojure language has a good core of libraries, their collections and other ready-to-use tools. According to the 2019 year survey, 25% of Clojure users create or maintain open source solutions. Some programmers also check and fix issues (17%), or report on them (15%).

Although all these libs aim to simplify Clojure programming tasks, they may confuse a beginner. Sometimes, it’s difficult to understand how to put all of them together and find an optimal solution for a specific task. So, now I want to show you my favorite tools for programming in Clojure. We will talk about:

working with web server and endpoints

interaction with web server and database

routing on server

using GraphQL in Clojure programming

support of modular architecture

Let’s start the trip to the Clojure programming world!

Note: Moving from Java and other similar languages you should know that there aren’t any traditional frameworks in Clojure. Everything is based on libs and their collections. This makes the language more flexible and multi-purpose.

Clojure ecosystem includes libs of different complexity. Some of them are only a set of additional functions (for example, a library for working with time). Meanwhile, system libs provide a platform for creating the entire framework. Such libraries allow the programmer to present an application as a set of components, describe the connections between them, and so on. The library itself ensures the creation of dependency graphs. For example, it can convert components into more understandable things, like functions.

1. Ring

Purpose: convenient work with web server and endpoints

The HTTP server abstraction is a key element of Clojure web stack. It enables simple work with web server and endpoints, which is essential for successful app development. Created in analogy with WSGI (Python) and Rack (Ruby), Ring abstracts the information of HTTP into a clear, unified API. As a result, the web developer can build modular systems consisted of components and share these components among various servers and applications.

How does Ring work?

It gets HTTP requests and returns HTTP responses. So, Ring isn’t a so-called web application framework.

Reasons for using Ring

As a dominant web library in Clojure programming, Ring is a nice choice for beginners. First of all, its main function is to provide a convenient interface for a wide range of web-servers. From this point of view, the technology is extremely useful and works perfectly.

Another Ring feature is providing a set of modules (‘middleware’). So, it allows you to use different pre-written libraries, compatible with each other.

Most of Clojure programmers choose Ring for endpoints because of its ability to use middlewares. For instance, these modules allow transforming required parameters from an URL to the Clojure code map. A web developer can easily write new middleware and integrate it into the ecosystem. For example, using the cemerick/friend library, you can fully manage the authorization process, apply different strategies (starting from the login and password, ending with oAuth), etc. Ring middleware helps to conveniently describe and start the process. It closes all endpoints that are prohibited for unauthorized users.

Experience in using Ring is important for working with other Clojure technologies. It is the first thing you can use to get an app moving.

2. Http-kit

Purpose: server start up

The event-driven, highly effective HTTP server/client library includes WebSocket, as well as asynchronous support.

How does Http-kit work?

It’s a library for organizing a proper web server interaction. Http-kit is suitable for highly concurrent asynchronous or synchronous applications. As for WebSocket and HTTP long polling/streaming, it’s better to feature a unified API.

Reasons for using Http-kit

Flexible solution

Http-kit provides an opportunity of working both with sync and async systems. The first option is simple, while the second works faster. So, you can make a choice based on your specific purpose. Moreover, you can use the library with Ring. It works almost like the Jetty adapter.

Convenient usage

The library ensures support for WebSockets, as well as perfect handling of long-held HTTP requests. So, creating a real-time app becomes easier. What is more, it’s an open source project. The library is available on GitHub under the Apache License Version 2.0.

Excellent results

HTTP-kit shows high performance and works fast in spite of great loads. At the same time, each connection requires only a few kB of memory. A client/server that is written from scratch is available as a single ~90kB JAR with 0 dependencies and ~3k lines of clear code.

Many software developers consider HTTP-kit as a basic tool for Clojure programming.

3. Compojure and Bidi

Purpose: routing on server

Both Compojure and Bidi are technologies for routing in web apps. The first library is quite popular among the community, while the second one is known as a handy solution for writing in ClojureScript.

How do Compojure and Bidi work?

These small libraries ensure routing on a web server. As a result, a software developer can write applications that are composed of several separate parts.

What’s the difference between them?

The 2 libraries perform the same function. But, unlike Compojure, Bidi:

supports both clj and cljs

is isomorphic and extensible

The main difference is that in Bidi routes are data structures. There are no macros here. So, the library provides a convenient bi-directional approach and other advantages. Some web developers prefer Bidi because it shows each route of a particular handler. Moreover, there is an opportunity to read the routes from a configuration file, generate and transform them by functions and introspect. They work independently from handled requests. So, the developer can match on things that aren’t necessarily handlers (for example, keywords).

4. Lacinia

Purpose: implementation of GraphQL in Clojure programming

This popular Clojure library is useful for those, who want to implement GraphQL while working with web APIs.

How does Lacinia work?

Originally, GraphQL is written in JavaScript. Lacinia is an official reference to this implementation. It is written in analogy with the initial specification. It can be called a backend-agnostic GraphQL query execution engine. So, the library provides contact between your data and the GraphQL client.

Reasons for using Lacinia

Using GraphQL, you can easily get a richer, more complicate Web API. Lacinia simplifies API development because it supports inline/named query fragments, GraphQL Schema Introspection, subscriptions, interfaces, unions, enums, inputs and custom scalars.

Written in an EDN-based schema language, the library perfectly works with GraphQL queries. It is built on Antlr4. Lacinia helps to rich efficient asynchronous query execution. You can plug it into any Clojure HTTP pipeline and use the companion library lacinia-pedestal for HTTP support.

5. HoneySQL and HugSQL

Purpose: successful database interaction

Many web programmers feel more comfortable working with SQL technologies, such as Oracle, MS SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite, etc. HoneySQL and HugSQL are query builders that provide stable access to SQL databases in Clojure applications.

How do HoneySQL and HugSQL work?

Both libraries ensure embracing SQL in Clojure programming. So, you will be able to write SQL database commands even in Clojure web apps.

What’s the difference between them?

Using HugSQL, you start with writing separate SQL files and putting them in your application. The query constructor is inspired by another popular library, YeSQL. It not only parses SQL files into Clojure functions but is also suitable for more use cases than YeSQL. HugSQL is actively maintained. It has protocol-based adapters supporting multiple database libs.

HugSQL has several advantages due to 2 fundamental features:

the queries are written directly, one query for each required function;

the queries are written in SQL.

HugSQL pros

HugSQL provides separation of Clojure syntax and SQL semantics (WHAT and HOW).

As a result, we can change the logic of getting the data directly in SQL, without rewriting Clojure code. It’s useful when a database schema is changed, and the old query doesn’t return the needed structure.

Moreover, SQL itself is a much more powerful tool for working with a specific DBMS. It allows writing large complex queries with “join”, aggregations and Window Functions, which can be extremely difficult in Clojure.

Furthermore, SQL allows using benefits of a specific DBMS (for example, Postgres). It’s important if you are sure the database won’t be changed.

HugSQL cons

It’s difficult to change DBMS in the middle of the project. It will be necessary to check a lot of requests and carefully test syntax support and specific output.

You can pass parameters to SQL queries. But, in some cases, the parts of the queries must be depended on certain conditions. Although HugSQL snippets allow completing this task, more often you need to do this using Clojure.

HoneySQL doesn’t provide such separation of SQL and Clojure code. You will see the queries as a map.

HoneySQL pros

It’s independent of a specific implementation of the DBMS because it usually avoids direct SQL queries. Instead of them, it uses specific DSL.

It allows maintaining your own DSL based on Clojure functions/macros. You can also create a query builder with saving intermediate requests on the Clojure side. For example, if you need to define a user by ID or other complex logic, you can save part of the HoneySQL structure. It will show that we need exactly the user, not the goods or other data. This “fragment” can be substituted into the necessary queries. As a result, you will get a shorter code.

HoneySQL cons

It can be challenging to use benefits of a specific DBMS, as well as to write complex queries (for example, with Window Functions)

The Clojure programmer needs to separate the code for retrieving data and the code for processing this data. The separation leads to additional work on refactoring.

6. danielsz/system

Purpose: support of modular architecture

Helpful technology for developing highly modular applications in Clojure. The framework supports effective interaction between modules and has good compatibility with other parts of the varied Clojure ecosystem.

How does danielsz/system work?

The library allows a web programmer to use a component-based approach. So, you can build an application using modules/components and the connections between them. Each component is a special object. In a conversation with Business Insider, Michael Dell recalled how he started his business in his Texas college dorm room when he was 19.

He said he actually began by selling hard drive kits for PCs, but a customer convinced him to become a PC manufacturer.

He has spent the last 35 years guiding Dell through different transitions, including its most recent pivot back into a public company with bold ambitions in taking on the cloud.

Like other major tech giants, Dell is betting on playing a major role in the evolution of the cloud market and the rise of hybrid and multicloud.

Dell says that a big driver of the company's reinvention is its investment in R&D — something it was known to skimp on during the height of the PC revolution.

The story goes that Michael Dell launched his career by selling PCs out of his Texas college dorm room in 1984, when he was 19. That's not entirely true. He actually started out selling upgrade kits for installing hard drives in PCs.

It was a strong business that was growing so fast he had to move from his dorm room into a small office. "The first nine months our sales were $6 million and the next year it was $33 million," he told Business Insider. "It had its ups and downs but the growth was quite dramatic."

He could have just stuck with that business model. But then the plan changed when a customer with a big order paid his shop a visit. "We kind of had to clean up the office because it looked like a big fraternity house and we got some respectable looking clothes," Dell recalled.

During the visit, the customer noticed a PC that Dell's team had put together and was using to format hard drives. The customer asked if Dell made those computers. When Dell said no, the customer had a simple question: "Why not?"

The conversation prompted Dell to shift gears to PC manufacturing. It was a smart move: Dell, the company, quickly established itself as a key player in the PC revolution, and would go on to become one of the largest computer manufacturers in the world.

"We were so busy making these hard drive kits that it didn't occur to us that we should make computers," Dell told Business Insider.

Now, the company is in the midst of another dramatic pivot: 6 years after it took itself private, 4 years after acquiring EMC and subsidiaries led by VMware, and about a year after going public again, Dell is now pushing to establish itself as a major player in cloud computing — where Amazon Web Services, a relative upstart compared to Dell, is the dominant player in the most important market in enterprise IT.

Dell in the midst of another dramatic pivot

It's been a tough journey for Michael Dell, who is now 54 and who has spent the last 35 years reinventing one of the most successful companies in technology.

Dell originally rose to prominence as a tech powerhouse by selling cheap PCs directly to customers, finding better margins by skimping on R&D. Now, with the EMC merger on the books, it's redoubling its efforts in enterprise IT — markets where where innovation and cutting edge technology are key.

"The transformation period, the five-plus years when we were private, allowed us to change the complexion of the company," Dell said.

That transformation began when he took the company private six years ago. It was a big gamble, but one that Michael Dell says gave him and his team the opportunity to rethink their way forward.

"We were evolving the company and felt that we could do it faster as a private company," Michael Dell said. "One of the things we were able to do in going private was reignite the entrepreneurial spirit of the company and change the focus of the company to be more medium and long-term. ... The innovation engine has cranked up on high. We invested $20 billion in the last four years or so on R&D. Relisting allowed to stay on offense and bring in shareholder interest. We're driving the evolution of the company to more software and services."

The changes were highlighted at last week's Dell Technology Summit in Austin. The company that was once called the "Walmart of tech" highlighted a dramatically new game plan that did not involve selling low-cost products at scale. Dell unveiled a new business model, called Dell Technologies On Demand, that would allow businesses to pay only for the computing capacity they use, instead of buying entire hardware systems.

A year since Dell went public again

As Dell marks the first anniversary of its return as a public company, the plan seems to be working based on its initial set of financials.

Its first earnings report in February featured a 15% jump in annual revenue of $90.6 billion. Dell recorded a quarterly loss of $287 million, more than double from the year-ago quarter. But the picture had changed by August when Dell swung to a profit of $4.5 billion from a $461 million loss in the year ago quarter. Dell's stock has climbed 20% since it relisted on the New York Stock Exchange in December last year.

"We've added almost $20 billion in revenue, which was way more than anybody thought — including us, by the way," he said. "I say, a successful reentry into the public markets."

Asked about the biggest challenges so far, Michael Dell paused to consider.

"There are always opportunities, but I'm not sure I'd point to any particular problems," he said. "We have a saying at Dell, 'Pleased, but never satisfied.' There are always opportunities for us to grow faster, gain more share, acquire new customers."

The Round Rock, Texas-based company, he said, is "growing, gaining share and on a very strong footing with a whole different set of capabilities."

The cloud challenge

In fact, the biggest question facing Dell is whether it has enough capabilities to take on its biggest challenge, the cloud — where customers large and small can rent functionally unlimited supercomputing power and networking infrastructure from online platforms run by the likes of Amazon, Microsoft and Google, making it possible for them to scale down or even abandon private data centers.

This was bad news for companies like Dell, Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, Oracle and IBM, which made their money selling expensive gear, software and services to businesses that hosted their own in-house data centers.

Dell has returned as a public company with a heftier portfolio of technologies to compete in the cloud. In 2015, two years after going private, Dell acquired EMC for $67 billion in the biggest tech merger in history. The purchase also gave Dell majority control of VMware, which EMC acquired in 2003.

EMC is a data storage powerhouse, while VMware is a pioneer in virtualization software which enabled businesses to tap disparate computer systems in the cloud or in private data centers, which means lower hardware costs and easier network management. These new technologies, together with its own heavier emphasis in R&D, have given Dell more firepower in the enterprise market and the cloud, he said.

"The organic and inorganic innovation engine continue to be very strong, solving challenges that customers are presenting to us," Dell said. "A lot of this is customer driven. Our big focus is on solving the unsolved problems customers are continually giving us feedback on and that drives our plans and how we spend our R&D dollars."

In fact, he said the new Dell is better equipped to deal with important changes in the cloud. He said Dell is starting a new chapter at a time when views of cloud computing are being transformed.

"There was an absolute time when, if you're talking about cloud, people thought the only cloud was the public cloud," Michael Dell said. "What is clear now which maybe wasn't clear 10 years ago or 15 years ago is that cloud does not equal public cloud. There are many clouds."

The rise of the hybrid cloud and multicloud

Dell, which has more than 157,000 employees, is looking to play a key role in two major trends: hybrid cloud and multicloud. Hybrid cloud allows businesses to set up their networks in public cloud platforms, while maintaining huge chunks of their data and applications in private data centers. multicloud, allows businesses to use different cloud platforms and in-house data centers.

For tech giants, such as Dell, IBM and Hewlett Packard Enterprise, the dual trends point to stronger demand for enterprise systems, including hardware. Public cloud vendors need the gear and systems to set up the huge data centers that power their platforms. With the hybrid and multicloud trends, more businesses, including major corporations, would also buy equipment for their own in-house data centers.

But these trends are in early stages and what they ultimately mean for traditional tech companies like Dell remain unclear, some analysts say.

"Investors no longer debate if the public cloud will take off (it will), but rather how much share the incumbents will lose," analyst Toni Sacconaghi of Bernstein Research said in a note in September. "In general, we believe the rule of thumb is 'the lower down the stack you go, the more it hurts.' Among incumbents, application vendors are likely best off, while hardware vendors have it worst."

He said Dell and another traditional tech player, IBM, appear to be in the strongest position to benefit from the multicloud trend. "But the onus remains on all these legacy vendors to demonstrate that they can generate incremental revenues…rather than merely running faster to stay in place," he wrote.

Other analysts were more upbeat about Dell's chances. With its broader portfolio, Dell is in a stronger position to compete in the changing landscape, said analyst Tim Bajarin of Creative Strategies Inc.

"They now have in place the key building blocks to deliver multicloud and hybrid cloud solutions," he told Business Insider. Michael Dell and his team, he added, "have created one of the strongest tech companies we have today."

Shifting gears

Michael Dell himself has demonstrated an ability to shift gears and reinvent his company and himself, said analyst Roger Kay, who has known Michael Dell since the late 1990s and has done consulting work with his company.

"He has has grown in multiple dimensions," he told Business Insider. "He started out as kind of PC hobbyist and has always been kind of geeky. Over time, he has learned his way from kind of a device-centric view to a much more systems orientation."

IDC President Crawford Del Prete echoed that view, telling Business Insider: "He takes the long view. The world thought that Michael was the guy who would disrupt the PC market – and that was all. But he always had his sights set on something much bigger and you are seeing that play out now."

Michael Dell certainly appeared to be eyeing something bigger at the Austin event when Dell unveiled its plans for the coming years. In his welcome speech, he said: "Dell has always been about a culture of technology optimism."

Time was when Google developer conferences buzzed around Google Maps, Web tool kit and so on. But from the last conference onwards the limelight was on Android, and Chrome in that order. Perhaps the humongous opportunity resting in smartphones has sunk deep into Google. A fact acknowledged by Larry Page himself when he quipped that he would like to run the company via his smartphone.

Google has sought to integrate its other products with Android and update them in Android without having to update Android to match them in compatibility.

Updates

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, Android aficionados do see a silver lining out of the limited Android updates. Blogs are rife with how features introduced from this edition onwards don’t necessarily need an update in the OS. It provides fodder for agreement as the basic premise for changing an OS’ version is to enable it to play all the applications, be it ancient or futuristic.
