Sofi Watercolor Practice Day 8 - Project 3, 03-17-2025 Watercolor on watercolor paper, 7" x 7"
For Day 8, I started a Udemy course titled Learn Watercolour in Five Fun Classes with Jane Davies. So far, it's been an enjoyable experience, focusing on a wet-on-wet technique with a more hands-off approach—creating wet boundaries, adding paint, and gently guiding the flow. It’s incredibly relaxing, and I’m having a great time with it!
Here are the results of my first project - a cute little fox.
The instructor uses Daniel Smith paints, which I might try in the future since they have a beautiful granulating quality. For now, I’m sticking with my Winsor & Newton watercolors, attempting to mix colors that match the shades of the Daniel Smith ones. As for paper, I used Canson Montval watercolor paper.

Officer Crumpton Explains 6 Drills to Sharpen Shooting Skills

For anyone serious about improving their shooting skills, practice is non-negotiable. According to Officer Crumpton, a seasoned law enforcement professional from Atlanta, GA, sharpening your aim and accuracy comes down to consistent and focused training. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your technique, these six drills recommended by Officer Crumpton can elevate your performance on the range.
Dry-Fire Practice: Build Muscle Memory
Dry-fire drills are a fundamental part of shooting practice. They involve simulating the act of firing a gun without live ammunition. According to Officer Crumpton, this drill is ideal for improving trigger control, grip, and sight alignment without worrying about recoil.
Pro Tip: Ensure your firearm is unloaded and double-check your surroundings for safety before starting this drill.
The Dot Torture Test: Enhance Precision
The Dot Torture Test is one of the most versatile shooting exercises. It’s a target sheet filled with numbered dots, each representing a different task, like rapid-fire or controlled pairs.
Officer crumpton Atlanta ga, recommends this drill for shooters wanting to improve accuracy under pressure. Start slow and gradually increase your speed while maintaining precision.
El Presidente Drill: Focus on Speed and Accuracy
The El Presidente Drill challenges shooters to balance speed and accuracy. It involves firing at three targets, reloading, and repeating the shots.
Officer Crumpton explains, "This drill helps with transitioning between targets quickly while keeping your shots on point."
The Mozambique Drill: Train for Real-World Scenarios
This classic drill teaches shooters to respond effectively to potential threats. It requires two shots to the target's center mass followed by one to the head.
Officer Crumpton emphasizes the importance of precision: “The Mozambique Drill simulates high-stress situations, ensuring you can stay accurate when it counts the most.”
Shooting from Cover: Practice Tactical Awareness
Learning to shoot from behind cover is essential for both professionals and civilians. This drill mimics scenarios where you need to protect yourself while staying on target.
Officer crumpton Atlanta ga, often highlights this drill in his training sessions, noting, “It’s not just about hitting the target; it’s about doing so safely.”
The Bill Drill: Master Recoil Control
The Bill Drill focuses on rapid fire while maintaining control over recoil. It requires shooting six rounds at a single target as quickly as possible while keeping all shots within a tight grouping.
Officer Crumpton explains that this drill builds confidence in handling your firearm during rapid sequences, improving both accuracy and reaction time.
Tips for Success
Consistency is Key: Repetition builds muscle memory and increases confidence.
Focus on Fundamentals: Master grip, stance, and sight alignment before attempting advanced drills.
Track Your Progress: Use a timer or journal to monitor improvements over time.
Safety First: Always follow gun safety rules and practice in a controlled environment.

Tips to Avoid Giving Up on Music
As a beginner musician, the journey into the world of melody and rhythm can be both exhilarating and intimidating. Each note played and every chord strummed adds to the tapestry of your musical experience. However, amidst the harmonies and crescendos, there lies a pitfall that many novice musicians stumble upon – the challenge of unrealistic expectations causing them to be giving up on music.
The Siren Song of Unrealistic Expectations
Imagine this: you pick up your instrument for the first time, eyes gleaming with dreams of stardom and adoration. You watch virtuosos effortlessly traverse the fretboard or glide their fingers across the piano keys, and you aspire to reach their level in record time. Herein lies the first pitfall - unrealistic expectations.
Many beginner musicians fall into the trap of expecting immediate results. The reality, however, is far from instantaneous mastery. Music is a craft that demands time, dedication, and patience. By setting the bar too high too soon, a sense of discouragement can creep in when progress seems slow. The key is understanding that the journey towards musical proficiency is a marathon, not a sprint. Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither is a musical virtuoso.
Impatience: The Achilles Heel of Musical Pursuits
The shadow cast by unrealistic expectations often manifests as impatience. Impatience can be a formidable adversary, whispering doubts and frustrations into the ears of budding musicians. It's crucial to acknowledge that progress in music, like many worthwhile endeavors, is incremental. Each practice session, each mistake corrected, and each lesson learned contributes to the mosaic of your musical growth.
Impatience clouds judgment, making setbacks seem insurmountable and progress appear sluggish. But remember, impatience is merely a fleeting emotion in the grand symphony of your musical journey. Embrace the process, revel in the small victories, and trust in your capacity for long-term growth.
Embracing Long-Term Growth Amidst Short-Term Hurdles
In the realm of music, long-term growth is the cornerstone upon which musical prowess is built. Every artist, from the legends of old to the rising stars of today, embarked on a journey fraught with challenges and setbacks. The road to mastery is seldom smooth, but it is in navigating the bumps and detours that true growth occurs.
As a beginner musician, charting your path towards excellence requires a blend of dedication, perseverance, and a dash of humility. Acknowledge the hurdles, embrace the learning curves, and celebrate the incremental progress you make along the way. Remember, it's not about how quickly you reach the finish line, but the depth of your musical understanding and the passion with which you play.
Conclusion
In the cacophony of musical pursuits, the allure of instant gratification and overnight success can be tempting. However, the true essence of music lies in the journey itself – the highs, the lows, and the moments of musical epiphany that shape your artistic identity. By tempering unrealistic expectations with a dose of reality, embracing patience in the face of impatience, and nurturing a mindset of long-term growth, beginner musicians can navigate the pitfalls that often lead to abandonment. Stay steadfast in your musical odyssey, and remember, the sweetest melodies are often born from the symphony of dedication and perseverance.
So, pick up your instrument, tune out the noise of doubt and expectation, and let the music guide you on a journey of self-discovery and artistic fulfillment.
