'the existence of buildings more than three to five stories tall is evidence of commodification' is so fucking funny because like. grats every single socialist experiment was actually deeply corrupted by the tendrils of Having Normal Apartment Blocks. like sorry to break it to you but an eight-story prefab apartment building isn't some architectural monstrosity requiring absurd logistics, and the roads and pipelines between smaller buildings, as part of their infrastructure, are a much greater maintenance sink. sometimes it's good to have things be closer together for reasons other than commodification of land (which, incidentally, is a very funny claim to make of a country where land can only be owned by collectives or the state)

While there was a contingent of separatists, among the first settlers of Antarras, the original missions to Antarras weren’t launched with the idea of ever becoming fully independent from Earth. Enough uncertainties plagued the early missions that finding native alternatives to every single need could never have been high on the list of priorities: early efforts towards practical sustainability went into determining what familiar crops found functional homes in Antarran soil, and what available building materials could replace the temporary prefab structures brought over on those first ships. Fuel might have been higher on the list had it not, in fact, been so readily available—hellstone’s value came from its easy, if dangerous, efficiency as an energy source. But there was enough else those first settlers needed that its value as an export vastly outweighed the value in investing in long-term infrastructure to encourage its use on Antarras.

(this week has been nothing but weird - first of all it's a constant grief about where it is I am, people are drowning, total infrastructural failure, central streets are flooding, ship employees shoved a man to his death, a man who tried to board a ship at the last minute, thinking he had no ticket and they 'were just doing their job' - this is nothing new of course. Because what do you do when someone has no ticket? You shove him to his death. Murder of certain bodies by the little people 'who are just doing the job' has been an everyday reality here for years, perhaps it always has been, there is no before. There has not been any Greece other than this, and whoever says it has been or is shocked at apalled.... good luck. There's nothing scarier than the little people who 'are just doing their job', they are more dangerous than any state employee, one day soon they will shove you or me and call it a day, order takeout, grab dinner. Least we forget state employees murder anonymous bodies we never learn about every day, more anonymous than you or me will ever get to be, in the hollow pool of our privileges. There has been a severe storm, constant raining, I haven't stepped out of the house in two days but it feels like ten. And what to do with this grief. Along with the cold and the rain the old sorrows returned, the old anger, the ancient heartache. I almost asked Richard Siken on Twitter how to do away with unexpressed anger. Totally forgot my goals, lost sight, fell behind. A week like this hadn't occured in three months. Perhaps it's only fair to get one week like this after three months of joyful balance, of ever more renewed courage. I can only listen to Prefab Sprout's 'I Trawl The Megahertz' and nothing else. I realize that I've been lost or in a haze only cause there's so much new music and I haven't bothered to check anything. Today I'm expected to be a person again, I'm expected to have a face: I have to see an old friend who's only in the city for a few days, go see an exhibition together, I fear he'll be able to discern the weirdness in me, how I'll be there physically, but then really elsewhere; where? and after, perhaps, a taste of the cure, what I need to get this week off me: 4k restoration of Au Hasard Balthazar, one of my eternal top5 -or, perhaps my eternal top1? what I would call 'my favourite film', if only I were still 13-, on my own, in a cool air conditioned cinema room, another Marie, yet another Marie.)

The RAAC scandal. Have you heard about the RAAC scandal? It's in the news. It's quite the scandal. It's about RAAC.
Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete. A wonder material from the fifties. Basically put, it's prefab concrete slabs made lighter by being, well, aerated, so being full of teeny-tiny bubbles. After the war it got used a lot, right the way through to roundabout the eighties and early nineties, when issues started getting pointed out.
To put it lightly, being full of teeny-tiny bubbles means that, if there are cracks, it's very easy for water to get in, weaken the concrete and rot the reinforcing steel. This is bad. This means things collapse.
Now.
The scandal is that this has been pretty well-known since the eighties - where a broad expiry date of thirty years was applied to RAAC - but no-one did anything about it. RAAC got taken off some official listing of approved building materials or something like that. Some memos were written saying it was unsafe. And a staff room ceiling collapsed in 2018 and a memo got passed around saying RAAC was unsafe. And nothing was done.
For years. And years. And years.
And now we hit Summer 2023, where apparently there was a collapse severe enough to prompt the government - which up until this point has been happily slashing school maintenance budgets - to force school closures.
(It should be pointed out that a big bonus point for RAAC is that there is often no external sign that it is ripe for collapse. It can just happen. Out of nowhere.)
If you find a timeline of what actions has been taken (or rather, not taken) about this stuff over the years it is pretty depressing. Every so often some professional body or government department would release a report stating that all RAAC buildings are now past their date and dangerous and this is bad, and then nothing was done. A little later and then another report saying that all of this RAAC was now dangerous - and nothing would be done.
Well, I lie. Something would be done. The amount of money available to actually fix the problems would be cut. That's what was done. Because as long as no-one was killed it wasn't a real problem, it was a maybe problem, and a maybe problem is some other government's problem, not yours.
Just fucking...
Maintenance, like logistics, is not sexy or exciting. It's something everyone always wants someone else to spend the money on, despite it being absolutely vital. Remember all those stories about how America's energy infrastructure is horribly out of date? It's like that. Vital, but there's only two forces out there with the money to actually do anything about it and the government is too slow and indecisive and happier throwing good money after bad by just keeping a problem sort of okay rather than taking the effort at fixing it, and the private sector wants someone else to pay and them to keep all the profits afterwards.
There's no real conclusion here, I'm just grousing. If you ever wanted a better example of buck-passing and "Well we did write a report about it" then look no further.
And I thought the Grenfell inquiry was bad...
You do have to wonder how bad things are now that they actually took some action!
