1949 Delahaye 175 S Saoutchik Roadster
Saoutchik was a cabinet maker when he moved to Paris from his home in Ukraine around 1900, but he didn’t take long to establish himself in the fledgling automotive coachbuilding industry and he showed a consistent flair over the next 50 years which puts him among the very elite of automotive designers.
His designs borrowed little from other designers, and along with names such as Figoni et Falaschi, Chapron, Franay and de Letourner et Marchand, Saoutchik was one of the foremost designers of exquisite Art Deco coachwork during the 20s and 30s.
Saoutchik was commissioned to produce the spectacular work-of-art by flamboyant English collector, Sir John Gaul. The design was based on the first post-war Delahaye chassis from a 175 S Roadster (chassis number 815023) producing 165 bhp from an engine much larger than the pre-war Delahayes ran – a 4,455 cc naturally aspirated overhead valve inline six cylinder engine with four-speed electro-mechanically actuated Cotal Preselector gearbox, Dubonnet coil spring front suspension, De Dion rear axle with semi-elliptic springs, and four-wheel hydraulic finned alloy drum brakes. The wheelbase was a whopping 116 inches.
The car was unveiled at the 1949 Paris Auto Show, and was exhibited at all the major European concours events that year, from Paris to Monte Carlo to San Remo, scooping the pool wherever it was exhibited. It won best-in-class in the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2006 just a few months after a complete restoration. Just a few months later, the car was honored again, winning People’s Choice at theprestigious Amelia Island Concours d’ Elegance.
Having fulfilled its exhibition duties, it then passed through a succession of other flamboyant owners, including actress Diana Dors.
The final word on this stunning automobile goes to Ian Kelleher, President and Chief Operating Officer, RM Auctions
“Following the financial depression of World War II, there were few collectors with the means, flamboyance and flair to commission a car as exotic as this Saoutchik Roadster. Arguably the most desirable post-war, coachbuilt automobile of all time, it is truly a masterpiece of the coachbuilder’s art. Eye-catching and exotic, it is wonderful to drive and combines superlative styling on a chassis of competition quality.”

Bert Perrigo of BSA explaining the mysteries of the 1933 BSA 500cc fitted with a Wilson preselector gearbox coupled to a fluid flywheel. The gearbox was actually a highly modified Daimler 15 car’s preselector gearbox using just 3 forward gears instead of 4; the car’s top gear and naturally the reverse gear were deleted. It never went into production, probably because of the prohibitive cost. Photo courtesy The Motor Cycle Scrapbook series, BSA edition.

🇨🇵 1935 Voisin C28 Aérosport Aircraft designer by Gabriel Voisin.
Tumblr media
Gabriel Voisin was a visionary who began in aviation and then moved on to creating luxury cars.
During the First World War Voisin’s aircraft had been bombers but when that holocaust was ended Voisin decided that he’d had enough of making such things and he moved on to making luxury cars of uniqueness and beauty. During the thirties nothing any other automobile manufacturer in the world could match the creations of Gabriel Voisin, likely because no-one else was willing to take the sort of design risks he took. Although Gabriel Voisin began in automotive design with fairly conventional cars it didn’t take him long to start applying his extensive knowledge of aircraft design and construction to his cars. He understood aerodyanamics, he valued the use of aluminium, and knew that he wanted his cars to be whisper quiet as befits a car that is perhaps better than anything Rolls-Royce were making. To sell a luxury car the first visual impression is of the exterior. The aesthetics of the car need to capture the imagination of the potential buyer. It has to be something that pretty much takes ones breath away. That first impression must then be reinforced with an interior that one feels that one belongs in. Then when the car’s engine is started even before the buyer experiences it on the road the effect needs to be one of silent controllable power. It needs to feel like the test drive equivalent of a visit to Tiffany’s. Gabriel Voisin’s “piece de resistance” in automotive design was and is his C28 Aérosport. The cars that preceded it were simply wonderful. The C28 Aérosport somehow managed to be his crowning piece of automotive art and engineering. The pneumatic vacuum actuated sun roof gliding open or closed bringing with it an impression like something out of a science fiction movie. The engine being a 3.3-liter six-cylinder with Knight sleeve valves. The sleeve valves are literally two sleeves that wrap around each cylinder, one for inlet and one for exhaust. These are moved up and down by a shaft which functions like a camshaft but with connecting rods attached to each sleeve. The sleeve valve system engine is silent as it does not have noisy tappets or poppet valves clicking shut. Mated to this silent 102 bhp, 3,318 cc inline sleeve valve six-cylinder engine was a then state of the art four-speed Cotal epicyclic preselector transmission with overdrive. This effectively gives the car eight forward speeds and two reverse but of course one wouldn’t actually drive the car like that but simply choose low range or high range depending on driving circumstances. Of the few Avions Voisin C28 Aérosports to have been built prior to the outbreak of the Second World War the car featured in our pictures is one of only two known to still exist. Although damaged during the war the car was repaired and used up until the sixties. The car was acquired by a collector in the eighties but restoration work waited until 1998 when it was purchased by its current owner. Gabriel Voisin’s “Avions Voisin” motor cars are some of the most outstanding ever made in any era. This one is an example of his finest work. Read the full article

What is a Transmission?
An automobile is composed of multiple parts, which all work together so your vehicle can run as beautifully as it does. One of the most important components is the transmission system, which powers the wheels, allowing them to move forward and backward. Without this system, your vehicle wouldn’t be able to move at all. Here, we will go into more detail about what exactly a transmission is, and what it does every time you hit the accelerator.
Tumblr media
An Overview
Simply put, the transmission is your vehicle’s gearbox, sort of like the change system and gear shifter you see on bicycles. The parts are mounted on the car’s engine, and the attached gear system and belt uses your engine’s combustion power to move the vehicle. To fully understand your car’s transmission system, you first need to understand how the car’s engine operates. This YouTube video visually explains how the engine powers your car.
youtube
Here are the steps:
The engine has a combustion chamber, in which fuel is ignited.
A mini-explosion takes place that expands heat and gas, pushing the pistons in the engine’s cylinders into motion.
As the expansion pushes the pistons, they start spinning, moving up and down the engine’s crankshaft.
In turn, the crankshaft turns the drive wheels, and the energy from the explosion is converted into mechanical energy.
So, where does the transmission system come into play during this process? Without the transmission, the power generated from the explosion in the combustion engine would be too high. The excessive power would prevent you from starting or stopping your car, or driving it at slow speeds. Most transmission systems have five to six gear sets and some gear strains that allow you to control the power being delivered to the vehicle without altering the engine’s speed.
Transmission systems are critical components in every vehicle, as they ensure that your vehicle runs at the correct speed without being too slow or fast for your requirements. They also ensure that the correct amount of power is being supplied to your wheels. Without a transmission, your car would be unreliable and unsafe to drive because you would not have control over starting and stopping.
What Does the Transmission System Do?
By now, you probably understand that without a transmission system, your vehicle’s engine would destroy itself. The engine would turn too quickly and lose its structural stability. Over time, it would overheat or shake itself to pieces. The transmission prevents this from happening by harnessing the speed and controlling the velocity limit.
The transmission is responsible for changing gears, depending on your accelerator input and car’s speed. Its main objective is to keep the engine’s RPM appropriately low. There are two benefits of keeping your transmission system well-maintained and taking it for tune-ups every 30,000 miles:
Decreased fuel consumption
No overload on the engine when turning gears
The transmission system also lets you control the engine’s energy whenever necessary. When you need to drive slowly, you can stay in a low gear to avoid damaging the engine. When you want to drive at a higher speed, you can shift to a higher gear to optimize your vehicle’s power by turning the wheels quickly.
Types of Transmission Systems
There are three different types of transmission systems, depending on the vehicle you drive. These are:
1.       Manual Transmission
This type of transmission system has a shifter and a clutch pedal that the driver uses to manually shift gears. There is a set of gears and a pair of output and input shafts. The driver manually selects the proper gear using the clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel after engaging or disengaging the clutch. The clutch is crammed between a pressure plate and flywheel, and the driver must push it before shifting gears. Different types of manual transmission systems include:
Dual-Clutch
Unsynchronized
Synchronized/Constant Mesh
Automated
Single-Clutch
Preselector
Learn about manual transmission repair here.
2.       Automatic Transmission
With automatic transmission systems, the process of powering the transmission takes place inside the transmission itself. It does not use a clutch to shift gears, but instead relies on torque converters. Below are more details about automatic transmission systems:
Direct-shift gearboxes have two clutches that disengage alternately while changing gears, thereby ensuring fast shifts and smooth acceleration.
The Tiptronic gearbox allows manual shifting via the shifter. However, a manual transmission is not allowed after set limits.
Hydraulic is the fluid inside the automatic transmission system.
Electric vehicles use single-gear systems for power transfer to the wheels.
Learn about automatic transmission repair here.
3.       CVT Transmission
Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is a pulley-based system that is common in small vehicles, such as ATVs, snow mobiles, and some hybrid vehicles. It contains a small drive setup with a secondary driven clutch, connected with a chain or belt.
No matter what type of transmission system you have in your vehicle, the gearbox will work almost exactly the same. The only difference is whether the driver manually pushes the clutch to change gears, or if the gears shift automatically.
The transmission is an integral yet complex part of your vehicle, so you need maintain it in order to keep your car in good working order for the long haul. However, you can’t trust just any mechanic to take care of this important system. Speedy’s Transmission Shop in Richmond, Virginia, provides the trusted transmission expertise you need, with unmatched diagnostic, repair, tune-up, rebuild, and upgrade services.

Registration is now open for the 2021 HamSCI Workshop, Friday and Saturday, March 19 – 20. The theme of this year’s workshop is midlatitude ionospheric science. The University of Scranton will serve as host for the Zoom virtual event, sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The program will include guest speakers, poster presentations, and demonstrations.
The workshop will also serve as a team meeting for the HamSCI Personal Space Weather Station project, funded by an NSF grant to University of Scranton physics and electrical engineering professor Nathaniel Frissell, W2NAF. The project seeks to harness the power of an amateur radio network to better understand and measure the effects of weather in the upper levels of Earth’s atmosphere.
The workshop’s keynote address on the “History of Radio” will be given by Elizabeth Bruton, curator of technology and engineering at the Science Museum of London. She will discuss the history, science, technology, and licensing of radio amateur communities from the early 1900s to the present, exploring how individuals and communities contributed to “citizen science” long before the term entered popular usage in the 1990s. Bruton has been a non-licensed member of Oxford and District Amateur Radio Society since 2014 and has served as the society’s web manager since 2015.
J. Michael Ruohoniemi, a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Virginia Tech and principal investigator of the Virginia Tech SuperDARN Initiative, will review the physics of the midlatitude ionosphere and discuss ways in which the amateur radio community can contribute to advancing scientific understanding and technical capabilities.

Job done on Julie Bishop by Curtin preselectors COMMENT: What an utter humiliation for Julie Bishop. The moderate candidate that Bishop backed to take over her seat, Erin Watson-Lynn, was able to secure just one vote yesterday. 218 more words

Look at the bank of 10 preselectors on this Siemens 100 line PBX and tell me this doesn’t look suspiciously similar to my УАТС-49 bank of similar preselectors.  I’m pretty sure a preselector is the same as a line finder in Bell System terminology.

Look at the relay pairs at the top, the fuses on the right, and the marking scheme on the individual rotors.  Did...  did Siemens rip off a Soviet design? Or is it the other way around?  I honestly don’t know.  The similarities extend to the tone plant seen around 1:00 minute into the video.

You can’t tell me these two switches aren’t directly related.  I need to find some diagrams of these Siemens PBX’s now.

A preselected gearbox with a gated shifter ? via /r/cars
A preselected gearbox with a gated shifter ?
Is it possible to build a preselector manual gearbox with a gated shifter ?
It seems like a great idea to bring to the gated manual into the 21st century and give it the performance to match up with the modern DCTs ?
And yes spellcheck screwed me with the title
