This week on Teaching Technique we turn our focus to the Present Perfect Simple to talk about the duration of an activity that started in the past and continues up to and includes the present. We take a look at its use, a suitable timeline to explain its concept, and the best concept checking questions we can use to deliver the lesson. Let’s get started!

We use the Present Perfect Continuous tense to talk about the duration of an activity that started in the past and continues up to and includes the present. It is often used with for and since. To ask questions we use "How long…?”
Sentence –He has been studying since 7o' clock.

Concept Questions
Do we know when the activity started? (Yes)
Does the activity continue up to and include the present? (Yes)
Is the action still continuing? (Yes)
What are we interested in? (The duration of the activity)

Sentence –He has been repairing the car. He's filthy.
Timeline: Present Perfect Continuous - Indefinite Past: result of a recently stopped activity
Concept Questions
Does the car work now? (Maybe yes, maybe no. We don't know)
Is the man repairing the car now? (No)
Did he stop repairing the car a short time ago? (Yes)
How do we know? (He's filthy)
