While translating Kana’s S supports, I noticed that this particular support chain had a number of changes all around, so I decided to translate all the conversations.

(T/N: Carrying someone “bridal style” is literally called “princess carrying” in Japanese. So the punch line of this conversation doesn’t localize into English at all, but it’s easy enough to understand the gag of this convo if you know that fact.)

Kana: Shiro! Hey, Shiro!

お、カンナ���。 今日も一緒にリンゴを採りに行くのか？▼ この間は、つい遊びすぎて リンゴ採る時間が少なくなっちまったもんな。▼

Shiro: Oh, is that you, Kana? Do you want to go apple picking together again today? Last time, we ended up playing too much, and didn’t have much time to pick any apples.

[カンナ]

ううん。リンゴはまた今度にする。 今日は一緒に遊んでもらおうと思って来たんだ！▼

Soldiers put blinders on Kim and Engineer’s faces. They disable their guns’ safety and point them to Kim and Engineer’s heads. Thuy, glancing back and seeing the soldiers ready to fire at Kim, stops them in a flurry. 兵士達は目隠しをキムとエンジニアの顔に掛け、銃の安全装置を外し、二人の頭に銃の標準を定める。後ろを振り返り、兵士達がまさにキムに対して発砲しようとしているのを見て、トゥイは慌てて兵士達に止めに入る。

THUY: Stop! Get out!!

止めろ！ 出て行け！！

Soldiers talk back at Thuy, in question of his action 兵士達はトゥイの行動に疑問を持ち、言葉を投げかける

THUY: I said, get out!!

出て行けと言ったのだ！

Soldiers leaves, and Thuy goes after them 兵士達は退出し、トゥイはそれを追いかけて出て行く

ENGINEER: Oh shit!

ああ、クソッ！

自己流和訳解説

*1 Coo-cooは鳩が鳴く声を表した擬音語で、cooは睦言を囁くという意味があります。

*2 screwは人を騙すという意味もあります。が、ここはエンジニアがキムの言葉を却下したことを強調する意味でこう訳しました。

*3 Dju vui vay はベトナム語のつづりとしてはデタラメのようです。お祝いの時に言う響きの近い言葉として「Chúc vui vẻ」があるそうです。

*4 Me-Myはアメリカ兵に対して春を売っていた女性達を表す蔑称のようです。

*5 leechは正確には「ヒル」です。血を吸う水生動物のアレです。人を食い物にする人のことを表す時に使う言葉でもあります。

*6 直訳は「そうだと言え、そしたら皮膚がある状態で離れられる」です。拷問を受けずに解放されることを比喩として表現しているのだと思いますが、もしかしたらあながち比喩でもないのかも…

*7 直訳は「恋に落ちた（二人の子供）のそばに知らない人は不要だ」

この先に待っている悲劇が辛い...
