OC-Tober Day #4: Favourite Drink!
I tried looking up what might've been around back in Naphtali's day (see results in last night's post), but I eventually went with my gut. My gut was historically accurate, by the way. Apple cider was definitely a thing back then - ever since the settlers got apple trees! So I say he's always liked apple cider, ever since he was a kid, and still gets all happy when he gets to have it.
(It was kinda funny drawing him, though, with the little tiny mug of cider in his big hands XD)

Protagonist [Spaceland Pilgrimage @raincloud-the-33rd-frog]
A young starkitten forced into the unknown when his family is separated by unknown, dark forces. With his faith in the great Space Emperor's future kingdom [yes, this is an allegory!] to inspire and guide him, Protagonist is following the Cross-star where he hopes he can be reunited with his family in the new kingdom. But his faith and the true purpose of his mission shall be tested! Overall, Protagonist is a very upbeat fellow who would go literally to the end of the universe to save the animals he loves, but he is also incredibly naive, and slowly realizes that things are much harder than they seem. :')
Prometheus Naphtali Flint [The Prometheus Curse @eruanna1875]
A cheery monster showman (who's apparently immortal, if the hole in his chest is any indication), the Master of the haunted house of Othrys. Very energetic and kind of a dork.

Fifth Day of Presentations: Most Epic Hero
http://zacharytotah.com/2020/09/2020-silmaril-awards-most-epic-hero-award-ceremony/
Today brought a few more members of the Team: Whit (the leader, probably leaving Scrooge in charge), Beowulf, Balthazar Blake, and Geoff. Balthazar was a little hesitant to let him go, what with all the magic floating around the Awards that could interfere with his counterspell, but so long as he’s with him to keep that up, things should be fine.
The four of them were very impressed by the presentation. Balthazar was fascinated by the maze, and wondered how it might work. Beowulf was a little skeptical that a mouse could be a worthy hero, though he was impressed by the fact that he could speak and use a sword.
Whit, of course, knew who this was, and knew how worthy he was. He approved deeply, and probably cheered the loudest of the four.
Geoff was just kind of amazed at everything. Not only was it the first time he’d been out and about since he joined the Team, it’s also the first time, before or after the enchantment, that he’s seen anything like this. (He also met up with a fellow the others had met yesterday, and who acted like he knew Geoff, but they didn’t get to talk long. The man called him Baron...)
Oh yes, and Rupert was a nominee, and the nominees probably had a certain place in the audience to sit. You know, a special area or something. But he definitely ended up sitting next to Fone Bone (another nominee). That was probably an interesting conversation.
(yes, I do love Bone)

Hello, dear! You've been visited by the random character question fairy! :D ~☆
What is your character's outlook like? Are they pessimistic, optimistic, realistic, etc.? Why are they this way? Does this change throughout their life?
I'd say Naphtali's outlook is definitely optimistic. He generally thinks the best of people and thinks life is grand. It's rather funny, with him living in a very haunted/cursed house, which has at the least been haunted since long before he was born.
Why is he like this? I'm not sure I know. He was born in the midst of all sorts of grim shadows (even the month is one folks put as Saturnine). And yet he's as Jovial as they come. He's always just had this natural high energy, high spirits, and thinks highly of anyone and everyone until they prove they don't deserve it.
How does he change? Well, that gets into the plot a bit. However, he goes through a lot of changes even before that starts. For example, a fight with a friend that was unreconciled by the point that the friend left without a word led him to determine to become more forgiving, and to not let quarrels stand. (Of course, as time goes on, that can go the other direction, into believing there's nothing TO forgive, not seeing when things are wrong. So it's a strength and a weakness.)
And of course, the War helped him grow up more - when doesn't it do that? I haven't really thought through how it affects him as much, but I suppose it helped him man up. He's had to fight for his home, and he's had to lose. He's had to lead men, and he's had to see some of them die. So he does gain a little more gravity and maturity from having fought through the War. (He does lose a bit of that as the Century slowly passes, though...)
He changes more by the end of the story, of course, but we're not there yet, are we?
However, his outlook, throughout everything that's happened so far, has remained optimistic and hopeful and rather kind. So there you go.

Between Presentations
On Saturday, I’m fairly sure Geoff got to talk to the strange man from the day before (whose name was Naphtali). Naphtali talked about Baron - a friend from his world who looked and sounded exactly like Geoff (you know how these dimension things work, right?) - and Geoff ended up telling him his story, of how he came to be with the Team. Naphtali was sadly sympathetic.
Sunday was an interesting day, because several of the members wanted to go to church, but they would probably have problems finding churches that were both in range and open. And there’s also the problem that several of the Christian members are Protestant, and others are Catholic. Oh right, and there are probably other characters in town for the Awards that would attend.
Lots to think about.

OC-Tober! Days 4, 10-11: Formal, Passion, Proposal
Well, look at that, I forgot Day 4. And it was actually finished at the time!
Day 4: Formal (The Prometheus Curse)
“Na—” With a guest present, she corrected herself. “Mr. Flint, may we come in now? We’ve been waiting a quarter hour!”
“Apologies, Mistress Bylilly,” he replied, poking his head through the door and speaking in an overly formal tone. “No admittance until the other guests have arrived, even for the loveliest of all hostesses.” He winked and popped his head back in, closing the door behind him before Melisande could get a foot in.
Day 10/11: Passion + Proposal
“Living room, you call it?” asked Naphtali, but with interest and not scorn.
“Uh-huh!” Ruth nodded quickly. “It’s where everybody in the family can come in and do stuff together and talk and stuff! It’s lots of fun.”
“Living room, eh?” Naphtali scratched at his green beard. “Do you know, I think that’s rather good!” Another laugh burst out. “And after all, it does tend to be a room for the living! Our phantasmical friends rarely enter in here.” An idea lit his grey eyes. “Perhaps it should be called by such a name!” Energy seemed to bubble up inside him, and he began striding about the room excitedly, speaking with passion. “Yes, yes! Now that I look at it, the title seems quite perfect! I shall call this the living room now!”
Baron smiled and lifted his eyebrows, apparently amused at this proposal. If Melisande were in less of a shadow, she might have nearly smiled herself. But her thoughts were shadowed, and a cruel irony found her. “Living now, yes. Now that the little ones are here. You could not call it living before.”
She is tired and very depressed, and Naphtali is just sheer fun. I love them so much.

Princess Rovyna [Between the Veil and Crown @secretariatess]
Born to a slave of the Phromptan king, Rovyna decided to reject the path she was put on and set her eyes on higher statuses. She knew she would be unable to gain respect of the court of her own political merit, no matter how good she was. So she fought to rise above her fellow slave sisters, learning how to present herself as and behave like a real princess of the court. Her efforts were rewarded when her father sought a daughter who would be a slight to the Harlofelp kingdom, without raising suspicion that she was not a true princess. Having achieved her goal of obtaining a title by marriage to the Crown Prince, she continues to make something of herself and the prince she married, determined not to be a figurehead as she was expected to be but rather have a hand in shaping her new kingdom.

Weird writer things: when you made your main character look monstrously bizarre, and suddenly realize that there is absolutely no explanation for it in-story.

At this point, Naphtali is just this happy, bizarre little ball of energy who just loves his best friend so much, and I absolutely adore him. He's such a blast to write.

Propaganda for Naphtali! Or should I say, Prometheus Naphtali Flint!
Tumblr media
I'm gonna be honest, you guys. I think this silly monster man is my favourite out of all my characters.
For one thing, he's "ugly". No, really. He says so himself. And he wears the term like a brand new suit. He has hair like spider's legs, a GREEN beard, and fangs, and he lives it up. (Which is kind of hilarious too, because even I don't know how he got some of those things.)
Tumblr media
(My initial concept art for the fellow XD)
He's also an absolute bouncing-ball of energy, which is super fun to write. Always enthusiastic about everything! Tugging along his dearest friends (whom he is also very enthusiastic about) on any fine lark! And, when he gets in a particularly good mood, he runs just about everywhere.
Tumblr media
Furthermore, he is... I guess you might say something of an overdramatic optimist. He's overdramatic, but in the most cheerful way. Any small thing can be made utterly grand in his mind.
That, combined with the states of A) Being An Absolute Gentleman and B) Being An Absolute Softie, also make him a huge romantic... especially towards the housekeeper, Melisande.
Tumblr media
(One of my favourite scenes in the book! All she did was take his hand for one minute. So naturally, his response was to jump up on the table and sweep off his hat to her.)
True, he's not always the most observant. He may know he's "ugly", but he has no idea that his fangs and his ghost house and the big gaping HOLE in his chest are in any way scary. Plus, he sometimes gets so caught up in the excitement of his own ideas that he has no idea that anyone else is talking.
In fact, there's quite a number of things he's utterly oblivious to in the House of Othrys.
Tumblr media
Still, he does what he does out of a most courteous spirit, even if he doesn't quite realize it's not the most helpful. He is the Master of Othrys, after all, and that means he must be a generous host!
So it is that he welcomes his (semi-unwilling) guests gladly into his ghostly home; which is where our story begins...
Tumblr media
(I love him so much, guys)

More propaganda for Naphtali! I thought I'd share a little of his Origin Story (in a meta sort of way).
So, way back in January of 2020 (before the world went nuts), I was playing around with these music challenges. You know, create a character from a shuffled playlist kinda thing. I was working off of this one in particular:
Tumblr media
And HOO BOY.
First song (the appearance one) was the freaking Grinch song. And not just any version, but specifically the Jim Carrey Grinch song.
(That's where the weird looks and features came in: I decided to take as many of the lyrics literally as possible. I accidentally got a bit of personality too, in that he's very pleased with his looks. He also does silly voices.)
Second song (the personality one) was "Grim Grinning Ghosts", and specifically this version:
(VoicePlay was a huge favourite of mine for years - thanks to this video, a lot of the ghost characters look like the members of the group!)
So from here, I got that he was spooky, and a bit silly and mischievous, but maybe not even really realizing he was spooky? And that he lived in a haunted house and socialized with ghosts all the time. (When I first came up with it, his now best friend was a ghost too!)
The third song (the rather vaguely worded "partner relationship" one) was just called "Enchantment". No lyrics, just music and whispery sounds. Like so:
I don't know why, but the vibe I got was "housekeeper".
At the time, she was just his assistant or something, but she was under some kind of enchantment, and also whispered a lot. Nowadays... most of that is still accurate, I guess. Except that now, there's a LOT more to their relationship than just assisting. ;)
By now, I was starting to get the idea that this was an unusual guy. Grinch, ghosts, AND enchantments.
But then I hit the "family" song.
And suddenly, this monster guy with a haunted house and an enchanted housekeeper has three 1970s kids showing up on his doorstep, and he has no idea what to do with them.
That's when it started to stick.
Then, fifth and finally, I had the name song. This one took a good bit of research initially, but I took my cue from the title:
"Prometheus" and "Flint" seem to have always been around (both having to do with fire). However, his middle name was harder. I almost named him "Corydon", "Baltair", "Boris", or (I can't believe I considered this one) "Alphonse".
In the end, I finally settled on "Naphtali". And am I glad I did!
It's funny, though, because after I gave him these names, I started thinking. I like tying in names with themes. But what happened was that, not only did I find themes to tie in, I ended up discovering some extremely vital plot points, the makings of the book, AND the very title of the story: The Prometheus Curse!
Of course, he's gone through a lot of changes since then (I think I was initially getting the vibe of some spooky supervillain way out in his haunted house all alone - back before I drew him, anyway!). And everyone else has changed and grown too. But I still love this story, and this world, and especially these characters.
In a way, this silly challenge gave me the entire story.
Or, it might be more accurate to say, if Naphtali hadn't come along, dancing to the music of these five songs, The Prometheus Curse wouldn't exist.
Tumblr media
Vote for Naphtali, y'all! Keep him going to the next round! :D

OC-Tober! Day 31: Home
Tumblr media
Well, well, well, well, well! The very last day of both October and OC-Tober, though not the last unfinished prompt. We'll see about those in the future, but this is the last for now. And it's one of my favourites, especially of the drawings.
Now, the subject of this one was never in doubt: I mean, the prompt for Halloween is Home? OBVIOUSLY, I had to do something with the one and only Prometheus Naphtali Flint and his haunted home of Othrys.
What I didn't realize was that it would be a picture. At least, until I remembered this particular bit from the Jim Carrey Grinch movie. If you know the movie, I'm sure you recall. It's just a brief little thing, but it's funny.
youtube
(If you'd like to see the exact bit, it's at 3:42 and lasts about ten seconds. Like I said, short but silly.)
WELL. When I suddenly happened to connect the bit with this character (who was in part inspired by that movie) and got the idea for the picture, I absolutely cracked up. It was such a stupid and utterly ridiculous idea. So obviously, I had to do it.
It wound up being one of the hardest ones to do, for two reasons. First, because I'm not very good at backgrounds, and I had to make one for the last frame. And second, because I drew the second frame first and started cracking up every time I looked at it, making drawing the rest very difficult.
But I enjoyed it, and I love the whole thing. And it does kind of fit, actually. Even aside from the fact that he is rather a silly.
I mean, Naphtali knows his looks are heinous and his house is heinous and all that, and yet he doesn't care. He loves it. He wears his looks like a brand new suit, and sees his dilapidated mansion like the finest palace.
It doesn't matter to him how scary it looks, how broken-down it is, or how many phantoms and fears and secrets fill its walls. It's where his friends are. It's where his heart is. It's home.
Thanks to @oc-growth-and-development for putting this event on, and for providing the words that prompted my imagination to soar over the course of this month! Happy Halloween, and thanks for joining us for OC-Tober!

And yes, I kinda went nuts on the propaganda. I had a lot of material to draw from - and still do!
I also forgot to mention that he was a minor legend in the Civil War, has a cactus staff for no discernable reason, and has a lifelong fear of fireworks. And maybe perfected swordfighting by sparring with his best friend during the longest quarantine ever.
He's just FUN.
