Qiu Yongsi truly surprised me. I was so sure my favorite was gonna be Li Jinglong or Mergen (they're still in my top 5 of course) but this moment from him won me over instantly:

One of my favourite tai sui concepts is how when xi ping copies someone into the law breaker, they have a special tune associated with them that represents their personality. Like Bai Ling’s tune was described as orthodox court music, refined and steadfast, save for the way it goes off key at the end to signify that something’s a little unusual about him under the surface (being a demon). Yu Chang’s was really chaotic and full of anger with lots of interruptions and an overall intense sound in general. Zhao Qindan’s was a classic tune originating from Wan. I’ve always wondered what mine would sound like

[Book Rec + Reaction/Thoughts] The Lantern and the Night Moths 灯与夜蛾 by Yilin Wang

An anthology of translated poems by five modern or contemporary poets and accompanying essays by the translator, @yilinwriter.

The cover art, a beautiful expression of the tone of this collection, is by Taiwanese artist Ciaoyin (check out her gorgeous insta!). I'm looking forward to the arrival of the physical book as my tab absolutely does not do it justice xD

Anyway! The official release date is 02 April 2024 though there have been some very thoughtful reviews by early readers already. Here, here, here and here.

(It was an ARC that I received too… though in the time it took to put this together, the ebooks have already gone out to readers >.< typical snail yj!) 

Instead, I’ll tell you who I think would be interested in this book or might benefit from reading it, then share things that are cool about it from the perspective of a bilingual hobbyist translator + lover of ancient poetry and lyrics.

Who should read it?

If annotations, translator’s notes and reflections spark joy for you...

If you’ve ever read poetry translations and been intensely curious about what goes on under the hood...

If you’re a translator yourself wanting to hear another voice...

Definitely check this out!

Also if you’re CN+EN bilingual and have ever read something in English that references Chinese terms and concepts etc. except ONLY in English, pinyin or wade-giles and been utterly frustrated by the ensuing guessing game (like me) Fear Not.

That will not be a problem here.

I really appreciate how Chinese words are used naturally where needed for concepts and quotes - they are also translated for those who can't read Chinese so no one is left out. It made this book of and about translation (and more) super comfortable to read! The solution is so simple, so direct, so rarely used that I am amused.

Oh, but do note that the Chinese characters are in simplified though!

The poems are organised by their writers who are listed here by order of birth year, not appearance in the book:

秋瑾 (Qiu Jin, 1875 to 1907)

废名 (Fei Ming. 1901 to 1967)

戴望舒 (Dai Wangshu, 1905 to 1950)

小西 (Xiao Xi, 1974 to _)

张巧慧 (Zhang Qiaohui, 1978 to _) 

Altogether, that covers nearly the last 150 years up to now. I’ve never really been into poetry by poets in such relatively recent times, in part because I’d been holding on to this stereotype of them spurning Classical Chinese and ancient poetry in the first half of the 20th century (not entirely true, as I came to realise xD). It made sense and was understandable, but felt sad.

Yet am I the target audience for this book?

Very much so.

In ways I didn’t think I would be too! It was so much fun to experience this both as a reader and a translator that I thought I’d share it here, where we are appreciating Chinese poetry together.

If you didn’t think you’d enjoy modern Chinese poetry, hey, give it a chance!

Oh yeah - on the way home a while back, I was talking to a friend about translation and was surprised to hear that her impression was that it ought to be a straightforward process. Like isn’t it a 1:1 conversion? At some point, ‘what’s the difference between something google translate might return, and how you would say it?’ was asked, and oh that was a delightful question to my ears! I showed her one of my comparison sheets where an original text is laid out alongside multiple translations line-by-line, briefly explaining some common and unique choices and how the people who had translated those probably arrived at the various interpretations. She was pretty amazed to see that the answer to her question was: very different. Hey, it’s a complicated process!

But there’s only so much one can explain in the space of a train ride. That’s why The Lantern and the Night Moths is a book I would also rec to someone like this friend of mine - open minded and curious but never having the chance to think about or encounter the craft of translation.

Like Yilin says, ‘the meaning of a word cannot be fully expressed in one single translation, nor through a series of translation attempts’. She then explains why with great attention to detail and some solid examples from one of the poems with word choices loaded with subtle connotations :D

What's interesting about it?

Okay, for one, Yilin shared a playlist of music that she listened to while working on this book. Here is the link to the spotify one and the one on youtube. Check them out! Now to business...

structure

What really helped keep the reader’s focus was the way each section is organized, how the poems and accompanying essay were presented and finally the short bio of each person right at the end. 

The poets are first introduced through five or six of their poems, works well suited to this purpose. Their voices, distinct through the vision, ambition and emotion of their words, are brought across by Yilin’s sensitive, thoughtful and poetic translations into English. These translations were also creative and transformative in a way that made so much sense after reading one of her reflections on the process, how she ‘must guide it with gentle hands to ensure its spirit is kept alive and intact during this transformative, and often excruciating process’. A rebirth into another language!

Personally, I’ve come to think of reading translations as looking at a work through another’s eyes. So it’s delightful when the translator’s presence is discernible, and even more so when the reader is given insight into their intention and process via commentary. 

Yilin’s essays coupled with the poets’ bios at the end provide a means to go back and appreciate their works in context of their circumstance and inspirations. Similarly, to read the translations with a changed perspective.

I don’t know how much of a thing this is with translated poetry anthologies in English - can count the number I’ve read with both hands lol, and they’re all of the ancient chinese poetry variety - but I really like this design.

Remember how we’re always recognizing traces of inspiration from ancient works (to them) in poetry of the various dynasties? 李商隐 Li Shangyin of Tang for example, was influenced by 楚辞 Verses of Chu and folklore and mythology such as that in 山海经 Classic of Mountains and Seas, 李白 Li Bai frequently references poets and history of the 魏晋 Wei-Jin era, and 王维 Wang Wei was clearly familiar with Buddhist scriptures which were translations themselves! 

Just like the late Táng poets whom he praised for boldly deviating from the voices before them, Fei Ming used popular references and tropey shorthands ‘in contexts utterly different from the original, reimagining them anew’. Dai Wangshu, too, ‘boldly re-envisioned what modern poetry could look like by revisiting the classics’. In fact, in his very relatable ‘To Answer the Visitor with Classical Imagery’, I see Li Bai’s 春夜宴桃李园序, Qu Yuan’s 离骚 and lots of - as the title says - classical imagery, as if pulling out painting after painting to describe a feeling.

And Dai Wangshu’s faith in the translatability of poetry, that ‘poetry isn’t what is lost in translation, but rather, what survives it’ reminds me of what a friend, @xiakeponz, said that I agree with so much - because readers can ‘experience something in their own individual way through (your) shared humanity rather than language alone’.

poetic tradition and beyond

Between the lines of contemporary poets Zhang Qiaohui and Xiao Xi, I can really see the charm of plain vernacular, how it can be beautiful, incisive and clever in turns. Even as it seems to have moved further than ever from the structure and language of literary Chinese, the themes that inspired common motifs remain a part of life. Mother and divinity, homesickness, finding oneself, tributes to admirable spirits and the issues that trouble society - just in a new form and with different ways of expression.

So many FEELINGS about what Qiu Jin was doing - ‘I awaken the spirits of women, hundreds of flowers, abloom’. I would love if she could see the world now. So many things for her to rouse and fight against, but at the same time just as many to be proud of. I am so in awe of her, but now hearing her loneliness and struggle there is a soft spot in my heart for those too.

So so so…

Qiu Jin’s admirable fire and lonely resolve. Zhang Qiaohui’s precious ability to express beauty in the mundane and in pain. Fei Ming’s utter delight! He is having so much fun and when* I’m vibing, I feel it too. Xiao Xi’s critical eye and keen observation of the world. Dai Wangshu’s whimsical charm and passion for translation. Finally, Yilin Wang, the connecting thread wound through them all, bringing them together so that we may be acquainted. 

*Reading his poetry is like unwrapping a seamless, many layered present. A gift that keeps giving - if only you have a key 😅 Fortunately, Yilin has halved our struggle 🤣

QZGS Live Action, Qiu Fei/Sun Xiang, M-rated. 'There was only one bed'-flavoured angry boners/hate sex.

Qiu Fei is leaning calmly against the hotel wall when their door keycards are handed out — when they’re told that nobody in the team gets their own rooms during away-matches anymore (the budget isn’t what it was remains unspoken, though they all hear it anyway). Sun Xiang knows what he’s doing because he’s watching him, again — accidentally, again. That’s why he can see exactly what Qiu Fei’s face does when he’s told that he’ll be sharing with Sun Xiang.

Sun Xiang is the captain and he’s seething but Qiu Fei is just— Qiu Fei is just stretching his arms up against the lobby wall, like he doesn’t give a shit. He so effectively Does Not Give A Shit that Sun Xiang has to grind his own irritation behind his teeth. He bites it down and turns back to Xiao Shiqin just in time to see the look he’s being given, practically daring him to explode in public when things are already going so incomprehensibly bad for their team.

If Sun Xiang sulks in the elevator, it’s nobody’s fucking business but his own.

‘I can swap with him, if you’re going to murder each other in the night,’ Xiao Shiqin says, in the hallway, with a gentle hand on Sun Xiang’s shoulder. At least he keeps his voice low — he might be bossy, but he’s not into public humiliation.

Sun Xiang just shakes his head because fuck having Xiao Shiqin trying to micromanage him 24/7 instead of just when they’re on the clock and, besides, the understanding on his face is annoying as hell.

Then everyone else has vanished into their rooms, and it’s only him and Qiu Fei left, and they open the door to their room and it’s worse, it’s worse: it’s a double bed. Just a double bed. Not even a bigger bed, either, which he supposes makes sense, because if there’s one thing that Sun Xiang has worked out by now it’s that Tao Xuan is a cunt. He wonders whether this is some kind of perverse punishment, if this is some sort of retribution for not having single-handedly won everything, when every-fucking-thing is stacked against him.

Xiao Shiqin’s voice, in Sun Xiang’s head, says it’s more likely to be gross mismanagement. But still.

And Qiu Fei? Qiu Fei doesn’t even say anything as walks into the room and looks around. He just barks out a laugh instead. Like this is funny. Like he doesn’t give a damn about the thought of them being stuck here, squeezed into a bed seriously not designed for two grown men. Even if one of them is short. Qiu Fei just laughs — switches on a lamp — drops his bag to the floor — folds back the coverlet — yanks off his jacket and his shirt — and flings himself backwards onto the bed.

The bed has a bit of a bounce to it.

Sun Xiang, who had been about to ring Xiao Shiqin to make him fucking fix this, finds his brain derailed. He keeps his mouth firmly closed, though, because he refuses to splutter. He refuses to splutter at the sight of the annoying guy on the bed in front of him, half-undressed and he— he looks good, he looks really good, the lamplight glowing soft and low across his chest, and why the fuck is he so built—

Qiu Fei rises up on one elbow. He’s so much more compact than Sun Xiang but he’s fit, and the muscles in his arms move visibly as he does. He just looks up at Sun Xiang and he says, smirking, ‘I’d known this was all it took to shut you up, I’d have done it ages ago, Captain.’

The title sounds like an insult. It sounds like a joke. Sun Xiang wants to bite the word from his mouth, wants to kiss it from his—

‘Fuck you,’ Sun Xiang snarls.

Qiu Fei smiles lazily. ‘If you want,’ he says, and drops back against the bed. He stretches his arms above his head as he goes, folding them like a pillow.

Sun Xiang’s mouth has gone dry. He’d really thought he’d moved past angry boners but, hey, apparently not.

‘I didn’t—’ he starts and he hates the way he sounds, he hates it; he feels the rage rise up in him at the way people are always pushing him like this, are always playing him, are always putting him in corners and then acting surprised when he lashes out. He curls his fingers into fists.

Qiu Fei just sighs at him. He swings himself back up from the bed, and gets right up into Sun Xiang’s space.

Sun Xiang blinks, and finds that Qiu Fei has clicked the door locked behind them and has moved Sun Xiang right up against the smooth surface of it — not pushing him, not even touching him, just… getting into his space until Sun Xiang has nowhere else to go unless he wants to actively throw hands.

He does want to throw hands. He wants to fight. He wants to shout and curse, and he knows his dumb fucking face is doing some stupid wound-up thing again but it’s just—

Qiu Fei is shorter than him, but he doesn’t feel small. He feels steady, he feels dangerous. He feels like a thunderstorm bearing down against him and Sun Xiang can either run away or else can brace himself and lean into it.

Sun Xiang isn’t known for running away.

He surges down against the shorter man, hand grabbing at his bicep. He moves fast and he moves hard. He wants to be the winner, even in this.

The kiss is a crash. The kiss is teeth and heat and tongues and aggression. The kiss is fighting for dominance, is fighting for control. The kiss is Qiu Fei’s hands pushing at him, pulling at his clothes, and suddenly they’re half away across the room and both naked on the dumb bed, hickeys already blooming across Qiu Fei’s skin. Sun Xiang isn’t entirely clear on how he got Qiu Fei on his back beneath him but he really doesn’t care, not with the heat of his body rolling up against him, not with the heat of Qiu Fei’s dick pressing firm. Not with the sound of Qiu Fei grunting up at him when Sun Xiang slides his fingers into him.

Qiu Fei’s mouth is a little bit open, lips curved up knowingly at the edges. They’re both of them panting. And maybe Sun Xiang pushes a little bit too hard. Maybe he crooks his fingers a little bit too deep. Maybe he’s applying a bit more force than he should, as he slicks Qiu Fei up with the little pack of lube that Qiu Fe had pulled out of his uniform jacket pocket and— honestly, how dare he just carry that around? How dare he make Sun Xiang know that he just carries that around? It’s terrible, it’s fantastic, it’s how fucking dare he.

Maybe he kisses roughly, but Qiu Fei kisses like he wants to leave bruises; like he wants to bust Sun Xiang’s lips with his mouth instead of his fist.

Sun Xiang fingers him, spreads him out, bites down upon his collarbone, licks hot strips along his chest.

Qiu Fei grunts and grins — jerks his hips up against him — shoves his hand into Sun Xiang’s hairdo and twists.

It’s only when Sun Xiang is sheathed inside of him — only when he’s fucking deep and hard, Qiu Fei’s legs wrapped around him and pushing Sun Xiang to move exactly how he want him to — only when Qiu Fei is grinning and telling Sun Xiang what a good boy he can be when he lets someone else take the reigns — good boy, fuck me deep, you can come when I say so—it’s only when Sun Xiang realises he’s moaning at the words he’s hearing, is moaning around the fingers Qiu Fei has shoved into his mouth, his dick harder than its ever been in his life — it’s only then that Sun Xiang realises that maybe you can’t really win at sex.

Or that maybe, if you can win at sex, that it’s Qiu Fei, spattering come across them as he grinds up hard around Sun Xiang’s cock, smiling and satisfied and unbearably smug, who’s the real winner here.

(‘You can come now,’ Qui Fei says, amused and indulgent, like he’s being magnanimous. He drags his fingers from Sun Xiang’s mouth, slippery with spit, and shoves them back into Sun Xiang’s hair, twisting and pulling as Sun Xiang — outraged and overwhelmed, horrified and ecstatic — jerks inside of him and does exactly that.)

you heave a sigh of relief after returning to the express car, your mind going a thousand miles about xianzhou because there is phantiliya! a lord ravager. its one thing fighting her with your characters and another physically...

and you stood corrected. your body all beat up as you fought phantiliya as if your life was on the line, making sure she had a wound that would last her centuries.

with rage seeping through your eyes as you clutched your weapon while kneeling on the ground "Our fight is not over lord ravager of hunt! i will find you again!"

as your days in xianzhou went by, the story as you remembered progressed, meeting the zhuming, fei xiao didn't lose her sanity, hoolay defeated and jiao qiu had his eyes. and the best part is that tingyun lived, just that her body went into a state of deep slumber. and dan heng embraced his vidyadhara status after his...'meeting' with old friends...you couldn't and wouldn't have been able to help with that no matter what.

the whole of xianzhou was eternally grateful. jing yuan and fei xiao agreed to provide you assistance no matter when and where. he nameless became a legend and your feats were heard all across the cosmos. 'the fortune teller' and the 'the seer' is what they would hail you as.

during the dinner meeting with the express after your returned...

"you know all our trailblazing expeditions have been even more fruitful with the least loss of companions. before you, we would have many unfortunate incidents" himeko propped her chin on her hand "we couldn't be more grateful for you exceptional abilities [name]"

welt fixed his glasses and crossed his arms "you have relieved a lot of stress for us. we know that in all future expeditions it would continue like so" he gave you a gentle smile

you on the other hand grew more worried with each passing trailblaze, growing unsure of the fact that you will be able to live up to their expectations. it was just by narrow luck that you managed to not have anyone die at your last stop.

fast forward, sunday left penacony to become a nameless, after saying a proper farewell to robin. no one got to know about his idealistic 'all day should be sunday' endeavor because of you.

in the express car, you were slumped on your cushiony bed, contemplating Amphoreus...an extrapolation similar to a knock off simulated universe which was the cradle of iron-tomb. and also the place where one or basically most of your favourite characters live...

The whole crew, even pompom was bewildered. you've never suggested places before. Himeko stuttered before replying "We can do that but...any reason as to why?" you hesitate before remembering black swans reason for sending you all, the one she told the crew before speaking privately with the trailblazer. "the express doesn't have enough fuel to stay in one place for too long and Amphoreus is a place where even Akivili had not trailblazed so it can be a new start into the history of the nameless...!" wow your memory came in clutch!

good thing you remembered about the spear falling from the sky so you were able to save both dan heng and stelle before they suffered any serious injuries. however, unfortunately march was unconscious and frozen even here.

you three trek your way into...Januspolis, the first ever place where the setting started. and like it was before, furiae praetors swarm your group, and then comes a flash of gold streaked ocean blue eyes and hair like that of snow, smirking at you as he passed by you in a flash, taking stelle's bat from her and swinging it with a dramatic pose.

Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies. I've hit the link limit on this post so I've had to remove NovelUpdate links, but they're still in the version of this post on Wordpress. Note that Taiwanese titles are not included on this list.

This is everything I know of as of December 11, 2024. There might be more. I tried. Resources used to compile this list: Danmeinews.com; this Carrd, last updated in March 2023; this other carrd last updated October 23 2024; list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates; a similar list on Goodreads; danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

These titles are in various stages of publication, from "entire series released" to "license literally announced less than a week ago." As far as I know, all Seven Seas titles are available world-wide, through major distributors and libraries, and in e-book and print formats. Seven Seas translation quality varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Rosmei licenses are Singapore distribution rights only. There is a list of international partners organizing group orders here. I've personally placed my orders through Yiggybean, as discussed in reply to this ask. Most of these titles are only being released as print editions, tho titles that weren't originally on JJWXC (of which there are several here) WILL have e-book editions. My first book from Rosmei arrived, and I found the translation and editing to be very strong. I can't speak to how accurate it may be to the Chinese original, but it read smoothly and had very few errors. Overall, though they've made some mistakes, they've been communicative and responsive.

as sure as i can be of anything. again, i can't show you, but i've seen things (3 images and 1 piece of text, to be specific), and based on those we'll at least wind up with something on the level of shl/word of honor (second ending)—but honestly i think it'll be much much better. even if you only look at the episodes themselves, qiu zhongwei (who incidentally directed fatal journey, one of the cql spinoff movies) loves fei du way too much to abandon him at the last minute.

Edit: So I hate slow burns, so getting into danmei WAS HARD!!!! So I'm looking for romance, and I don't mind pining a bit. But most danmei are slow burn with pining, so I don't think I'll ever find a danmei where it's mostly romance. I got into SVSSS cause I really liked the couple and didn't know it was gonna be a slow burn. TGCF I got into cause i saw so many romantic things, HuaLian! Didn't know I was gonna have angst city!!!! I got into MDZS cause I honestly read all of MXTX books so let's just read the last one! I didn't know they were all slow burn or just everyone pining forever😅😅
