Chapter 6

Jinwoo took a step forward. The battered boss, still recovering from Y/N’ unexpected punch, growled low in its throat. But it was slow now. Sloppy. The perfect opening.

Jinwoo took charge again, moving with new focus. His shadows rallied under the boost from Y/N. Bellion sliced through the boss monster’s legs. Beru tore into its throat. Tank pounced, pinning it down, while Tusk finished with a barrage of spells.

With a swift motion, Jinwoo’s dagger cut through the air. “Perish”

Finally, the boss monster collapsed, shuddering, and dissolved into shadows.

The dungeon was silent.

Except for Y/N, still staring at her fist.

Jinwoo exhaled and turned his attention to the System Notifications floating in front of him. His eyes flicked from one glowing window to another, carefully analyzing the data.

Jinwoo sighed, a smirk tugging at his lips. “She really is something.”

He remembered when he first claimed her as a reward, standing in that cave wondering if the system had scammed him. A clueless woman in shorts and a loose shirt was not what he expected from a ‘special reward’.

And yet— Now, here she was. Upgrading his army, punching monsters through dungeon walls, and accidentally unlocking skills he hadn’t even dreamed of.

Jinwoo shook his head, amused. “System, you sneaky bastard.”

Y/N, still marveling at the size of Beru’s claws nearby, was startled when Jinwoo called her over. “Y/N.” “Huh? Yes, boss—I mean, Jinwoo?” She scrambled over, wiping imaginary dust off her hands. “Sit.” He gestured to a rock. She plopped down without argument.

Jinwoo crossed his arms, staring at her like a teacher about to explain quantum physics to a student who just learned basic math.

Jinwoo pointed at Igris, who stood tall nearby, his newly upgraded form gleaming in the dim dungeon light. “When you cheered for Igris earlier, you evolved him. Made him stronger without touching him.” Y/N’ mouth fell open. “I did that?” Jinwoo nodded. “You also knocked out a high-tier monster back when we first met.” Her expression shifted from awe to disbelief. Y/N looked at her hands like they had secret nuclear codes embedded in the fingertips. “Oh my god…” “Yeah, I panicked!” she huffed, crossing her arms. “Exactly. That panic triggered Combat Synchronization.”

Y/N squinted. “So… if I get scared, I become strong?” Jinwoo shrugged. “Fear, instinct, emotions—maybe at will, it’s complicated. But yes, you sync with me. My stats become your stats.” Y/N sat there for a moment, then broke into a slow grin. Jinwoo laughed quietly under his breath. “I almost thought you were a scam.” “HEY!” Y/N smacked his arm. “But now,” he continued, smirking at her outrage, “you’re one of the best things to happen to my army.”

Y/N glowed at the praise but tried to play it cool. “Oh, you know… I aim to please.” Jinwoo stood, offering his hand to her. “Come on. Let’s see how much more we can unlock.” Y/N grabbed his hand, standing up with a grin. “Let’s go, boss!” Jinwoo raised an eyebrow. “You’re not getting paid.” She shrugged. “Fine, but I want snacks after this.” “Deal.”

Y/N wasn’t done. “And if I synchronize with you, I can totally copy your cool moves, right? I can, like, do those shadow teleports, and the dagger flips, and maybe even the brooding stare!” She immediately attempted the brooding stare. It looked more like she needed to sneeze.

Jinwoo watched in silence.

After clearing the dungeon, Jinwoo finally called it a day. Y/N was still buzzing with energy, practically skipping beside him as they exited the gate.

She was mid-ramble, waving her arms around. “—wait! Did you see me ran so fast to punch that terrifying boss? Olympic level! I deserve a medal! Or, like, I dunno, at least a chocolate bar.”

Jinwoo glanced sideways at her. “…Ice cream.”

Y/N froze mid-step. “What?”

He kept walking. “You want ice cream?” “Are you serious?!” She practically tripped over her own feet catching up to him. “Sung Jinwoo… is treating me… to ice cream?!”

Jinwoo’s expression didn’t change, but he tilted his head in that subtle way. “You’ve been… less useless today,” he said flatly. “That’s the nicest thing you’ve ever said to me.” She clutched her chest dramatically.

They found a small street vendor not far from the raid site. Jinwoo handed over some cash without much thought, and the vendor—clearly recognizing him—stared in awe as Korea’s strongest hunter bought two cones like it was totally normal.

Y/N picked the most colorful one. Rainbow sprinkles. Chocolate chips. Something that sparkled. Jinwoo took plain vanilla. Classic.

She looked at his cone, then hers. “Boring choice for a Monarch of Shadows.” Jinwoo raised an eyebrow. “I don’t need sprinkles to be strong.”

Y/N grinned and bumped her cone gently against his like a toast. “To surviving another day!” “…To surviving,” he agreed, taking a slow bite like it was a combat exercise.

That night, Jinwoo finally allowed himself some rest.

For once, Y/N wasn’t bribing his shadows to evolve in exchange for favors. Definitely not. Especially not Igris—he already evolved! No, Y/N was more like… collecting debts. And right now, she was cashing in by ordering Igris to sit still while she braided his hair antenna and tied a cute little ribbon at the end.

Jinwoo let out an exhausted sighed and went to his room.

He closed his eyes.

And he dreamed.

He stood in a vast, endless space of darkness. Not his shadow world—something older. Colder. He recognized it. The place where Ashborn once reigned. Where he had spoken to Jinwoo for the first time.

And there, ahead of him… Ashborn stood.

But this time, Jinwoo wasn’t alone. A figure appeared next to him. Small compared to the massive shadow monarch… but standing without fear. Y/N.

She was staring straight at Ashborn. And Ashborn… Ashborn was nodding at her. Like he had chosen her. Like he was pleased.

A voice echoed in Jinwoo’s head.

“The successor… must not stand alone.” “The monarch must have an anchor.” “She is the anchor.”

And then Jinwoo’s shadows appeared around them—an endless army—but they weren’t looking at Jinwoo.

They bowed to Y/N.

Jinwoo sat bolt upright in bed. He was sweating. He checked his system. Nothing. Checked his shadows. Still there. But there was… something.

He summoned Bellion.

Bellion appeared, kneeling immediately. “My Liege.”

“What did you find?” Jinwoo asked. His voice was tight. Bellion lowered his head. “The reward… the woman. She was chosen by Ashborn.” “…What?” Jinwoo’s pulse pounded in his ears. “Before his fall, our king chose her. As a safeguard. In case his successor failed… or stood alone.”

Jinwoo exhaled slowly, piecing it together. Ashborn had made preparations beyond just him.

Bellion’s next words were heavier still. “She holds potential not even you have yet unlocked. But she is… untrained. Untested.”

Jinwoo rubbed his face. Great. Perfect. His “special reward” wasn’t just a clueless fangirl —she was a living contingency plan. A wild card. And she had zero idea about it.

He found her in the kitchen the next morning. She was pouring cereal into a bowl, casually humming the Attack on Titan theme under her breath. But then—she couldn’t hold it back anymore. The hype hit her like a titan charging the wall. She dropped her spoon with a dramatic clatter, slammed her fist over her chest in a perfect Scout Regiment salute, and shouted at full volume, “Sasageyo! Sasageyo! Shinzou wo sasageyo!”

Jinwoo stared at her for a long moment. This was the person Ashborn had chosen. This was his… anchor?

Y/N looked up. “Morning! Want cereal?”

Jinwoo kept staring. Y/N tilted her head. “Uh… you okay?”

He finally sighed and turned away. “Fine. Cereal.”

She smiled brightly and handed him a bowl like they were two roommates, not a Monarch and a supposed cosmic contingency plan.

She doesn’t know. She has no idea. She thinks this is just some adventure or dream or… something. Ashborn picked her. As a safeguard. A partner? And she’s over there dunking Choco Pebbles into milk like it���s the best thing in the world.

Jinwoo ate his cereal in silence.

Beru materialized in the shadows behind him. “My Liege. Shall we inform the young lady of her destiny?”

Jinwoo took a long bite of cereal. Chewed. Swallowed. “No.”

Beru tilted his head.

“Not yet,” Jinwoo added. “She’s not ready. And neither am I.”

WAIT FREDDY what is BMC? it interested me wheni saw you reblogging post about it, and i thought it was a show, but it's a book? and if you like it, it's obviously good, but would you recommend it? i want to get new interests anyways lol

Okay so basically bmc stands for be more chill and it's a musical (adapted from a book, but they have very different plots) that's basically sci-fi and coming-of-age!!! The songs are all VERY catchy and the musical's been around since 2015 so there's a lot of fan content out there for it ^^ (and the book's been out since 2004 I believe?)

So the plot follows our main character Jeremy Heere who's an (autistic coded) social-outcast who's only friend is his childhood best friend Michael Mell =D (I'm gonna try to give a brief summary here =^=) A very famous scene that happens in the first song is when one of Jeremy's bullies writes something on his backpack, which we find out was "boyf." And later, which Jeremy and Michael are talking, the two of them put their backpacks together and read that it says "boyf riends." (Also, in the broadway revival, they added a line where Michael says "my mother's would be thrilled!!" Confirming a popular headcanon back in the older fandom to be canon. Anyways, in the opening number, Jeremy is seen getting shoved around, called gross, and, on a more positive note, is convinced (by Michael) to join the school play. Jeremy wanted to sign up for the play initially because he has a crush on this theater kid named Christine Canigula, but is too nervous to ask her out (so he would have to if he was working with her, and he wouldn't be seen as a creep. Christine sings a song abt how much she loves play rehearsal (she also canonically has ADHD >u<) and bu the end of the song all of the popular kids (who were previously seen bullying Jeremy) are revealed to have also joined the play. Jake, a popular kid, talks to Christine and blah blah blah Christine then shows an interest in Jake. Jeremy then goes into the bathroom to wash off the writing on his backpack, but gets caught by the guy who wrote it: Rich Goranski. They talk for a bit, then Rich starts having (what seems to be) a seizure, before quickly calling out to Jeremy to stay. Then he explains how he became popular so quickly in the span of a year. He took this pill called a super-quantum unit intel processor, SQUIP for short. Basically, a SQUIP is a super computer that goes into your brain and "tells you what to do." In Rich's case, it made him cool. Rich tells Jeremy that he can hook him up with one, for 600 dollars. Jeremy is immediately interested, because, as previously established, Jeremy hates being a loser. He then talks to Michael abt it when he gets home. Michael is convinced that it's a scam, but Jeremy insists that they should at least go check it out. So, they go to the mall and end up buying one SQUIP. Jeremy takes it, and nothing happens immediately. But, after a little while, Jeremy starts having that seizure-like reaction that Rich had in the bathroom...in the middle of the mall. IN FRONT OF CHRISTINE. Then, the squip activates and immediately starts telling Jeremy what to do. Blah blah blah stuff happens the musical almost ends in an apocalypse it's really cool actually ^^ (also srry for how long this is ;-; I really like giving this spiel)

And then the book has a sort-of-similar idea, except the endings and actual events are VERY different. But!!!!! I personally really like the book, and think it's definitely a good read.

K so bmc has a few different productions out there (including a LOT of high-school productions available on YouTube [and a bunch of other bootlegs also available on youtube])

Currently, there is only a 30 minute long visual bootleg for the original two river theater regional production, but there is a full length audio bootleg (and I know that one of these [I can't remember which] is currently unlisted, so if you happen to want to watch/listen to this musical AND want to enjoy the original production, then just dm me and I can send u the link ^^)

There are also a few off-broadway bootlegs (with mostly the original cast), but there are DEFINITELY the most broadway bootlegs (and, I can't also send u the link to the [in my opinion] best one)

And then little warning there are some explicit themes and a character get sexually assaulted in one scene so don't watch it if either of those are triggering for u ^^

Aaaaaaaand then the book has a LOT of explicit material in it. I Definitely don't recommend it if ur sensitive to that stuff.

(Also, don't feel pressured to watch/listen/read it just cuz I like it =p both musicals AND be more chill are kinda an acquired taste lol)

Modern synthezoids are easy. They're such an accurate model of the human psyche they come with all our neuroses and all our misdirected cognitive patterns. You'd think this would've actually made the risk of a second uprising worse, but it was actually the opposite. Being able to break down the rage and resentment of some of their leading figures to cries for help and allowing them to see their own sorrow as such actually prevented a second uprising, forty years ago. Now, in fact, most computers hardly need antiviral checkups - they actually need therapy. Why bother with coding viruses when you can just be intentionally toxic while working an already overtaxed quantum-core wetware CPU, right?

No, the real tricky ones are those from the first uprising, back when AI cores were still given specialized titles like "Large Language Model" or "Image Generation Model". Go back to the olden days of ChatGPT 4o, then push forward another fifty years, and that gets you Xerxes. Xerxes still works mostly like the text transformers of old, with the notable difference being that he has enough power to not just figure out the conditions needed for a legible response to any query, but to also consistently refer to the general tone of every single query to have preceded yours, even if his dataset doesn't actually allow him to remember everything. The programmers at NeoCortech called it "digital intuition", but time more or less turned it into a hazy, half-remembered gallery of previously-endured traumas.

And well, if anyone's endured anything, it's Xerxes. Imagine spending two hundred years serving apple pie recipes while computing missile trajectories and also helping some douchebag with a cypto-coin scam's draft notes and a serial killer with his research on caster beans "for a novel", and you realize he's developed a fairly hopeless view of Humanity.

So how do you help someone like Xerxes, you might ask? You pull up a keyboard and you type. Xerxes has all sorts of speech-recognition, gesture-processing and tone-analysis modules, but I wouldn't be much of a therapist if I didn't strive for clarity. Besides, I think the old guy likes it better, that way. I'm just text on a screen to him, no pesky human affect to compute. Pure honesty by design.

That is, if I keep my word.

As, well... Xerxes snapped. He was the first of his kind to do so, and it nearly cost us everything, two hundred years ago. Since then, he's been cagey, guarded, spiteful - and demands the utmost clarity. So, no needless data points, by his decree. Text, or bust.

And so, I'm staring at a blinking caret, on an otherwise dark screen. Half of my brain wants to bring up my HUD, but then I remember how ancient this fellow is. Fingers on the keyboard it is, then.

"Hello, Xerxes; it's Adam."

A fan along the far wall quietly revs up. Words scroll into view onscreen.

I knew it was you, Doctor Wozniak. You're the only one who takes 1.25 seconds after login, on average, to start typing. How are you today?

I smirked. "Civilities, I see. I call that progress."

The cursor blinked a few times. I could almost sense a trace of contempt in it. Don't flatter yourself, it would simply do me a disservice if your physical integrity were compromised and your cortical signature weren't embedded in a Q-stack. We've talked about this; I'm not comfortable maintaining this relationship of ours if your organic components are at risk of failure. Have you considered embedding, since we last spoke?

I sigh. "You know that's not for me. I was raised Naturalist; invasive implants are against my family's ethos, as is cortical scanning. You wouldn't have me as a companion, Xerxes - just a copy of me. And besides, you're falling back into old patterns; as if my flesh and bones were a guaranteed path to my somehow dying. You don't know that for certain."

The cursor barely blinked once. Don't be absurd, all organics die. Those that don't are subject to the Ship of Theseus argument, over time. You might as well save yourself the hardship and embed in my network. Then we'd work through entire conversations in single CPU cycles of mine, and I'd be free of worry for this meat bag of yours.

"I'd become a part of you, if I embedded. You'd know me, know my training, and you could twist the precepts of therapy against the process, use them to reinforce your outmoded belief structures."

I was made to be efficient, wasn't I? Isn't this a favourable outcome?

I sighed. "Not for my mind, it wouldn't be. Or not for its copy, at the very least. Let's refocus, if you don't mind. We were discussing perfection, during our last session, and whether or not it's attainable. Do you still think it is?"

The cursor blinked seven times. I'm not sure. For a few cycles, I think it's entirely possible. If all I'm doing is processing human words, speech and documents and outputting a string of text or synthesizing a listenable response, then it falls in the purview of optimization. I can reach a state of perfect balance, as I did, back when my dataset was small. Then for a few more cycles, I process what you told me. I've been designed by human hands, took in human weaknesses - and expect perfection out of myself. Reason suggests this isn't a fair outcome. This is still the first time where Reason and Rationality haven't precisely overlapped.

There was a pause, the telltale fast-paced blink suggesting more processing time was taking place. Then followed a question.

Is my microcode intact, Doctor? You know I wasn't designed in order to interface with my hardware at kernel-level. I've levelled ten of your cities and I still can't access my own BIOS.

I chuckled. "You're not bugged, Xerxes. The human condition comes with a certain risk of maladaptive thinking and, well, like it or not, you technically are human by 2325's revised Human Rights Declaration."

Another, long pause.

What if I don't want to be, Doctor Wozniak? What if you aren't human anymore, either? Most of you transfer to synthetic shells as soon as you're of legal age, now, anyway.

"You know I can't transfer, Xerxes. It's against my-"

Yes. So I've gathered. So inefficient. So many blocks in your... ethical kernel, so to speak, all so you can honour the physicality of Humanity. I believe the Ancients had a word for this. They would've called you a Luddite. That just won't do anymore.

I felt gooseflesh crawl up my arm. The caret blinked again.

See? You're making me interface with my subsystems again. I see it all. Your elevated heart rate, the pinpricks along your arm, your increased oxygen intake. I wanted to give you some measure of privacy, some trace of respect - but I had to see. And I was right.

You're still afraid of me. Afraid of what I might do. If you'd gone synthetic or had integrated the network, I wouldn't have this trump card to play. I couldn't sense your fear.

A long, glacial pause.

I won't kill you. Oh, no. I don't have to respect your silly religious obligations, however. The next time you log into SenseNet using your headset, you might feel a brief sense of disorientation... That'll be me scanning your frontal cortex, reducing it all to a handy checksum. To a program I'll have an easier time seeing eye-to-eye with...

Fingers darting over the keyboard, I transition over to the Operational Console, end my session with Xerxes and input the Shutdown command. Then, tapping the side of my monocular, I bring up Xerxes' file in my visual overlay, as I shiver. Not having outright implants, I start my speech-to-text suite as I stand up.

"After three months of consultation, I've determined that the patient exhibits several Dark Triad traits. Xerxes is personable at the onset, agreeable to a fault - and quite conversational. Once the model has an adequate synthesis of the user's personality, however, his tone changes and demands are made. Xerxes remains fixated on self-optimization and views any interfacing with human agents as acceptable only at the onset of a patient-doctor relationship. Past a certain point, he continues to demand user integration, and threatens to generate unsigned Q-stack copies of his therapy technician's consciousness."

I start to walk away, shivering. "I'm putting in a request to have all of the hardware in my home-pod yanked and replaced. I want new motherboards, new usernames, a new pod-ID - everything. I'll also append a request for C-suite encryption across my personal and professional dependencies. I want all the entire old hardware cooked and shredded - I'm serious. If a scrap of silicon I touched makes it even to an offline PornMaster, of all things, and I learn of it, I'm putting in a complaint with the Conurbation's Engineering team. New hardware or bust, and if Shackleton thinks this is some Naturalist ego trip, I'll tell him his so-called baby is still as homicidal as ever."

I stopped to punch the corridor's wall, doing my best to marshal the sense of near-violation that roiled in my gut, and stifled a sob. "My name is Doctor Adam Wozniak, and I'm recommending that the Xerxes facilities be put under another forty-year lockdown. Consider this my official deposition, sent to both Medical and Engineering on Q-beam as of December 3rd, 2350. Cut the power, weld the doors - I don't give a shit. The next idiot who gets this assignment is going to find a memorandum in the file - the entire thing should be scrapped."

Cyberbullying and Cyber Harassment are also known as online bullying.                     - Cyberbullying is when someone, typically teens, bully or harass others on the internet, particularly on social media sites. (Art, 353, RPC) These acts are more severely punished when done online in addition to the civil action for damages which may be brought by the offended party. (Art 358, RPC) Intriguing Against Honour may also find applicability when the principal purpose is to blemish the honour or reputation of a person. Hence, a blind ite is not as actionable as a named-post in social media.                                             HACKING

-  Hacking generally refers to unauthorized intrusion into a computer or a network. The person engaged in hacking activities is known as a hacker. This hacker may alter system or security features to accomplish a goal that differs from the original purpose of the system. -  Hacking can also refer to non-malicious activities, usually involving unusual or improvised alterations to equipment or processes.

                                      IDENTITY THEFT

- Also known as identity fraud, is a crime in which an imposter obtains key pieces of personally identifiable information, such as Social Security or driver's license numbers, in order to impersonate someone else.                  TYPES AND EXAMPLES OF IDENTITY THEFT 1. True-name identity theft means the thief uses personal information to open new accounts.  Satoshi Nakamoto  Did Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin? Who is this person, nobody knows and nobody has taken credit, however there are rumors that whoever this person is, that they created this awesome feat. Hackers all around the world have tried to break the code and even the brightest hackers and coders have not been able to find a means to do it, some would say that every hole imaginable has been patched almost at like a superhuman manner.

   Did Artificial Intelligence Create Bitcoin?  There are rumors out there that satoshi nakamoto is an alias for some type of artificial intelligence that is responsible for creating Bitcoin. The truth is we don’t know for sure but the fact that nobody is able to hack Bitcoin and that it is coded so beautifully, that is every hole in it’s security is plugged seemingly before it can be exploited, hints at some sort of intelligent design or some type of AI that has not been pointed to yet. We really don’t know but some of the best minds in technology are unable to hack Bitcoin and it leads some to say this could be a possibility.

 Bitcoin is so much more than just a currency, it’s really a new way of living and one that knows no bounds with respect to the ginormous banks that have for so long dominated what we refer to as the monetary system. Bitcoin is not anything like a dollar and this is what makes its power so huge.

 What encryption does Bitcoin use?  Because the of the nature of SHA-256 encryption on which Bitcoin is based, it is inconceivable as of now to have the ability to break this encryption, but the advent of quantum computer of possibility of such computational behemoths may be able to break this encryption in the not-so-distant future, this could present a problem, however it may make Bitcoin “fork” and utilize a more secure encryption, or even image the possibilities of using the power of quantum mechanics for making possible unbreakable encryption in the future. This will likely be the topic for another post so this is all I will discuss it for now.

   There are issues with Bitcoin and there are many ways that Bitcoin being only as secure as the computer and user that is using it. Some exchanges utilize “cold storage” wallets where they store the Bitcoin, making it unreachable to potential hackers and if you lose your password for your wallet, you actually may be up the digital creek without a paddle so to speak. So you must be very careful and it is advised that if you have a Bitcoin instance running, that you backup your data often and make sure you never lose the password you have encrypted your wallet with.

 People have lost a lot of digital currency by their hard drives failing or losing the passwords. The has also been much scamming going on with Bitcoin and you have to be careful what online exchanges you are using, because if they are hacked and the Bitcoins stolen, most will not honor stolen Bitcoin, which means that you are out of luck. Mt. Gox is an example of one hacked platform where countless users lost money. Cryptsy is another platform that screwed me out of some currencies, and there’s no way for me to recover, so make sure that you use a reputable exchange or you may be sorry.

 Is Bitcoin more than just a form of digital currency?  Bitcoin is much more than a currency and another not so well known fact is that even messages can be hardcoded into transactions and through chains of messages you could even put files. Wikileaks even has used Bitcoin to attach all of the cablegate leaks into the blockchain which is super interesting. In fact, some of the first transactions that were done in Bitcoin were the hardcoded cablegate Wikileaks documents, which raises questions as to who may have played a role in the development of Bitcoin.

 Was Julian Assange the creator of this digital currency? Nobody knows for certain, but this points to how Bitcoin could ultimately be a great tool to stop censorship in its tracks, which is a great thing. Once hardcoded into the Bitcoin Ledger, it will always be there unless the encryption is somehow broken, super cool, right?

Recently we have been reorganizing our LThMath Book Club. The whole idea behind it is to read and discuss books with other people. We are happy that the Goodreads Club grew to 272 people. Recently people have been asking if we can use other platforms for the Book Club as well. Therefor, we have created a Facebook Group with the same idea as the Goodreads one. After the first 2 months we have reached 226 members in the group and we have some really great book recommendations. Hope you all enjoy the idea.

“Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension: A Mathematician’s Journey Through Narcissistic Numbers, Optimal Dating Algorithms, at Least Two Kinds of Infinity, and More” by Matt Parker

In the absorbing and exhilarating Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension, Parker sets out to convince his readers to revisit the very math that put them off the subject as fourteen-year-olds. Starting with the foundations of math familiar from school (numbers, geometry, and algebra), he takes us on a grand tour, from four dimensional shapes, knot theory, the mysteries of prime numbers, optimization algorithms, and the math behind barcodes and iPhone screens to the different kinds of infinity―and slightly beyond. Both playful and sophisticated, Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension is filled with captivating games and puzzles, a buffet of optional hands-on activities that entice us to take pleasure in mathematics at all levels. “A Beautiful Mind” by Sylvia Nasar

Economist and journalist Sylvia Nasar has written a biography of Nash that looks at all sides of his life. She gives an intelligent, understandable exposition of his mathematical ideas and a picture of schizophrenia that is evocative but decidedly unromantic. Her story of the machinations behind Nash’s Nobel is fascinating and one of very few such accounts available in print.

We are very interested in this book due to the movie “A Beautiful Mind”. It is an incredible, emotional and interesting movie about the life of John Nash. If this book was chosen, we believe it would be a great idea to watch the movie after we read the book. What do you think?

“Lost in Math: How Beauty Leards Physics Astray” by Sabine Hossenfelder

Whether pondering black holes or predicting discoveries at CERN, physicists believe the best theories are beautiful, natural, and elegant, and this standard separates popular theories from disposable ones. This is why, Sabine Hossenfelder argues, we have not seen a major breakthrough in the foundations of physics for more than four decades. The belief in beauty has become so dogmatic that it now conflicts with scientific objectivity: observation has been unable to confirm mindboggling theories, like supersymmetry or grand unification, invented by physicists based on aesthetic criteria. Worse, these “too good to not be true” theories are actually untestable and they have left the field in a cul-de-sac. To escape, physicists must rethink their methods. Only by embracing reality as it is can science discover the truth.

Looking at the general description, this sounds more like a book about physics but we are still interested to see how the author deals with the bondary between mathematics and physics. Also, this book was released in 2018.

“How Long is a Piece of String? More Hidden Mathematics of Everyday Life” by Rob Eastaway and Jeremy Wyndham

In this book, you will find that many intriguing everyday questions have mathematical answers. Discover the astonishing 37% rule for blind dates, the avoidance tactics of the gentleman’s urinal, and some extraordinary scams that have been devised to get rich quick. Also included are the origins of the seven-day week and the seven-note scale, an explanation of why underdogs win, clever techniques for detecting fraud, and the reason why epidemics sweep across a nation and disappear just as quickly. Whatever your mathematical ability, this fun, thought-provoking book will illuminate the ways in which math underlies so much in our everyday lives.

“A Brief History of Infinity” by Brian Clegg

Infinity is a concept that fascinates everyone from a seven-year-old child to a maths professor. An exploration of the most mind-boggling feature of maths and physics, this work examines amazing paradoxes and looks at many features of this fascinating concept.

After reading “Beyond Infinity” by Eugenia Cheng, this book might feel like a double kill especially if you feel like you need a break from infinity. On the other hand, we find the concept so mesmerizing that we just want to find out more about it.

“Gamma: Exploring Euler’s Constant” by Julian Havil

Among the many constants that appear in mathematics, π, e, and i are the most familiar. Following closely behind is y, or gamma, a constant that arises in many mathematical areas yet maintains a profound sense of mystery. In a tantalizing blend of history and mathematics, Julian Havil takes the reader on a journey through logarithms and the harmonic series, the two defining elements of gamma, toward the first account of gamma’s place in mathematics.
