What's the origin of your username?: Surname of crusty old man, Koschei the Deathless from Russian folklore. I've only ever seen this surname used for him in the book Deathless by Cathrynne M Valente.

OTP(s) + ship name: I don't have one right now! Most recently it was illya and gaby from the man from uncle aka Gallya :-)

Song stuck in your head: honestly it's Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas... i wish it was something that said more about me but.. well, I guess it does!

Weirdest habit/trait: Have to put my seatbelt on no matter what I'm doing with the car, even if I'm waiting, realigning my parking, or only parking around the corner.

Hobbies: Reading, gardening, sewing, writing, and right now i'm just getting into deliberate note-taking so I can maybe start writing essays :-) I'd put so many more but I have this aversion to claiming something is a hobby if I only do it rarely... but it is! They all are! For now I'll keep it all a mystery...

If you work, what's your profession?: I work for a non-profit designing resources, events, and activities for school careers programmes

If you could have any job you wish, what would it be?: Author or something very niche and outdoorsy, ecologist-style.

Something you're good at: Reading the room and looking out of the window (two separate, unrelated tasks).

Something you collect: Novelty face pots by Sylvac, and only when they're in the charity shop/happened upon! We have 3 so far, just the onion, the beetroot, and the apple sauce. We have a chutney pot with ears from price kensington... We abstain unless they are just absolutely nuts to look at - then they're a must.

Something you forget: My phone, all the time.

Favorite movie/show: TV: Loving watching Severance right now, but all time fave is Fargo (specifically season 1!).

Favorite food: Yoghurt and any fruit!!!!!!

Favorite animal: Dogs, wrens, capybaras

What were you like as a child?: Middle child and the only girl! Sensitive and sad, but loud and active, outdoors all day. Did NOT understand sports. Telling stories and regularly 'lying' about the magical things I was/did/had to fit the whim of the moment. Very creative and opinionated and I love her.

TV Commentary: The Magicians (2015; Amazon Prime)

I have just started this not-so-new fantasy show, The Magicians, based off the adult book series by Lev Grossman and definitely have fallen down the rabbit hole. I was hesitant because for some reason that I cannot remember, I did not really like the book series all that much. Might have been a timing thing, might not have appealed to me in general. Anyways, It’s already blown my expectations!

The show follows Quentin Coldwater, a unpopular, awkward and geeky soon-to-be graduate student who falls upon an entrance exam to the magical university called Brakebills (which was filmed at my university, UBC) and realizes that he’s had magicians powers all these years and hasn’t known about it. He then starts training at this school, meeting new friends and understanding his craft, forgetting all about graduate school and comes to understand that the absurd childhood fantasy series he’s been obsessed with his whole life is real and is unleashing its’ villain upon the world (which is a fucking excellent villain btw).

SPOILERS BEGIN: EPISODE FOUR

I just finished episode 4: The World in the Walls, where Quentin wakes up at a mental hospital instead of being in his dorms at school. It freaked me the fuck out. The series began with Quentin at this hospital, where he himself believed something was wrong with him because of his obsessions with a fantasy series and believing he was not fitting in anywhere and therefore, feeling depressed. But it was concluded that it was a common thread amongst Brakebill’s students before they were admitted, to feel depressed and like outsiders because they had not honed in on their magical abilities. Makes sense. But the episode started with him waking up back at the hospital, and all his friends at Brakebills were there as other patients, and the professors were doctors or staff. It was freaky! The further the episode went, the more it seemed (and as pushed by the doctors and staff) that Quentin was ‘imagining’ the whole ‘magical uni thing’ and that this was all a figment of his mind and obsession with fantasy. And I was believing it and getting more and more angry that possibly the story of ‘magicians’ (which I apparently had forgotten) was all make-believe. But when his childhood friend comes to visit, he performs magic for her asking her to see it but she says she can’t. But then she continues to say that she wishes she could see the ‘fireworks’ he had made, and that’s where I jumped. He never said he was doing fireworks! So she could see the magic. Glitch glitch. Is this the Matrix?

Basically it becomes evident that this whole thing is a ‘mind trap,’ an extremely detailed and extensive form of magic that collects the users mind in a trap of their own deepest fears and makes them believe that instigated reality is indeed reality and the only way to fight out of it is to believe it is false. 

I thought this plotline did so much for the story. It was interesting and captivating because it really fucked with the viewers mind on what was real and what wasn’t, such an interesting thematic element to fantasy in general, sort of a meta-quasi version of parallel universes or realities. It also showed the reader our protagonist Quentin’s darkest fears and weaknesses, instead of just telling us. Show don’t tell! It allowed us to feel that fear right along side him and beg the screen to allow it to not be true or real. In that episode alone, I found that I connected with him 100 percent more. He has a internal, possibly damaging fear of being an outsider, but also feeling as if something is innately ‘wrong’ with him and his mind. He fears of losing any sense of reality, where he belongs and why he matters to the world and for being ill. So interesting and such a clever way to show this in a storyline.

Anyways, I am now completely invested in continuing this show, and whatever turned me off in the book series itself, has surely turned me back on.
