Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde - R. L. Stevenson
(EDIT: have a look at the clamshell box I made for this book here)
A few weeks back I had the chance to take a leather book binding class held by the wonderful Greek bookbinder Dimitris Koutsipetsidis at his bindery in Athens. He helped us patiently to improve our skills and even took us leather shopping in the end.
It was a really great week and I've had the pleasure to spend it with fellow Renegades while making tools and binding books together and doing some occasional sightseeing on the side.
My book was Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. A book that I greatly enjoy every read and for which I had a lot of different plans before finally settling on this design only the night before case decoration was up in class (many thanks to my fellow Renegades at this point for having opinions on my ideas, I greatly appreciated all your input <3)
The whole trip left me with lots of good memories and plenty of bookbinding things to work on (gold tooling and leather paring included. Although I might end up cheating more often than not with the paring >.<)
Photos were taken by @runawaymarbles, one of the other bookbinders on the trip.

The Hayloft -- R. L. Stevenson
Through all the pleasant meadow-side The grass grew shoulder-high, Till the shining scythes went far and wide And cut it down to dry.
These green and sweetly smelling crops They led in wagons home; And they piled them here in mountain tops For mountaineers to roam.
Here is Mount Clear, Mount Rusty-Nail, Mount Eagle and Mount High-- The mice that in these mountains dwell, No happier are than I!
O what a joy to clamber there, O what a place for play, With the sweet, the dim, the dusty air, The happy hills of hay!

Hill I'll die on is anyone saying Jekyll & Hyde's about a guy inventing a potion of makes you evil missed the point his whole philosophy is that everyone has good and evil inside them or at least the capacity for good and evil the whole story is about the duality of human nature he invented a potion of redistributes your nature his problem was when he started getting too fucked up and evil he needed to drink his serum to become good again and when he ran out he was fucked

critical thinking comic transcript below the cut
I saw a post recently that posited that there's "no way to know" if an ewe exhibits homosexual mating behavior because they "just stand still"
many people responded
"This too is yuri"
"A total of 173 ewes in 24 one-sire breeding pens were observed continuously for one estrous period. The female frequently initiated sexual contact by seeking out the ram. In general, ewes followed the rams about while in heat. When two or more were in heat simultaneously, certain ewes bunted or crowded other estrous ewes in an attempt to gain the attention of the rams." Mating behavior of the Ewe C. V. Hulet, R. L. Blackwell, S. K. Ercanbrack, D. A. Price, L. O. Wilson Journal of Animal Science, Published 01 November 1962
What do we gain by the extrapolation of this behavior onto human lesbians? What do we lose?
When were "single women" first free to do as they liked? Women gained the right to own property in the United States in 1900. For Pre-civil-rights-era black women this expansion of womens' rights hardly helped.
Marital rape became a crime in 1993.
No-fault divorce was not fully legalized until 2010. Women who could have been raped by their husbands at age 20 are now 52 years old. Women older than that lived in this reality.
"no-fault divorce correlates with a reduction in female suicides and a reduction in intimate partner violence. A 2004 paper by economists Betsey Stevenson and Justin Wolvers found an 8 to 16% decrease in female suicides after states enacted no-fault divorce laws. They also noted a roughly 30% decrease in intimate partner violence among both women and men, and a 10% drop in women murdered by their partners." What is no-fault divorce, and why do some conservatives want to get rid of it? AJ Willingham, CNN
It's still legal to institutionalize minors for gender deviance and the practice of non-consensual institutionalization of women for gender deviance has existed as long as the institutions themselves.
What about this story of two ewes appeals?
"Other sexually active females in the group will allow you to observe if the individual is in standing heat when other sexually active females are present to mount her." "Characteristic behavior for the ewe is rapid tail movement or raised tail in the presence of the ram. She will demonstrate secondary estrus behaviors such as nervousness, walking the fence or increased vocalizations for the ram" Estrus Detection in Farm Animals Yeager, Neary, Singleton Purdue University Department of Animal Sciences
YOU MUST LOOK
OR YOU WILL NOT SEE.

Is the age difference between Trump and Vance the biggest between a potus and veep? And have there been many vps older than the presidents they served under?
Good questions!
Yes, the age difference between Donald Trump and JD Vance is the largest between any President and Vice President in American history, and by a pretty big margin. And while it would seem that most Presidents would choose a younger running mate, that's not really the case and it's been about even throughout history: 28 Presidents were older than their Vice Presidents and 24 Vice Presidents were the older side of the duo.
Here's the list of biggest age differences between Presidents who were OLDER than their Vice Presidents: 38 years, 49 days: Trump/Vance 29 years, 273 days: Buchanan/Breckinridge 22 years, 237 days: G.H.W. Bush/Quayle 22 years, 87 days: Eisenhower/Nixon 21 years, 334 days: Biden/Harris 17 years, 48 days: W.H. Harrison/Tyler 16 years, 54 days: Monroe/Tompkins 15 years, 271 days: McKinley/T. Roosevelt 15 years, 265 days: Jackson/Van Buren 15 years, 44 days: Taylor/Fillmore 15 years, 3 days: Jackson/Calhoun 14 years, 250 days: J.Q. Adams/Calhoun 13 years, 126 days: Reagan/G.H.W. Bush 12 years, 358 days: Trump/Pence 12 years, 299 days: Jefferson/Burr 7 years, 165 days: J. Adams/Jefferson 6 years, 250 days: F. Roosevelt/Wallace 6 years, 244 days: Harding/Coolidge 5 years, 304 days: Nixon/Agnew 3 years, 250 days: Washington/J. Adams 3 years, 96 days: Carter/Mondale 2 years, 273 days: L. And here is the list of biggest age differences between Presidents who were YOUNGER than their Vice Presidents: -18 years, 257 days: Obama/Biden -18 years, 230 days: Pierce/King -17 years, 192 days: Cleveland/Hendricks -14 years, 197 days: Hoover/Curtis -13 years, 69 days: F. Roosevelt/Garner -11 years, 233 days: Madison/G. Clinton -10 years, 70 days: Grant/H. Wilson -8 years, 275 days: Kennedy/L. Johnson -7 years, 96 days: B. Rilla of Ingleside Book Club: Chapter 1
It's LMM book club time again! I'm glad. Can't wait to read what all of you guys have to say.
Personally, I really liked how writing a post every day motivated me to stick to the daily reading schedule last time, so I'll try to do that this time, too. I doubt I'll have anything too deep to share, just personal ponderings about the day's chapter – but isn't that the point of being in a book club!
I'm reading the Finnish translation again. It's by Kerttu Piskonen, from 1962, and unfortunately, it's abridged. The book still has 34 chapters, though, so only one less than the original. I'll find out which one is missing and supplement with Project Gutenberg when necessary.
I really didn't like Rainbow Valley when I was younger, so I don't think I've read Rilla of Ingleside that ofter either – twice before, if memory serves. But I'm looking forward to going back to it now, when I'm a bit older, with a bit more understanding of history and hopefully also a little bit more patience than I had before.
~
I'm a huge fan of Jekyll & Hyde the musical, so I'm really enjoying the drama with Doc the cat. It should be mentioned, though, that in his original novella, R. L. Stevenson specifies it's Dr. Jekyll who has the heavy tread, while the original Mr. Hyde walks lightly.
~
The chapter began so ominously, with Archduke Ferdinand being mentioned in passing, but there's so much gossip about the neighbourhood in the paper that I'd almost forgotten about that by the end of the chapter. Modern day Susan clearly wouldn't be one to doomscroll on social media, the way she just waves the international news aside.
~
Translation notes:
It feels a bit weird to me how the translation makes Anne and Susan use the formal you with each other – it feels cold to me that Susan's been working for them for two decades and yet, they haven't become informal with each other. But maybe that's just how it looks like from a 21st century point of view; maybe keeping up the boundary between employer and employee like that was important in a setting where you lived together and saw each other all the time. And of course, it's way more amicable than the super old-fashioned way you sometimes encounter in old Finnish fiction where you don't use the second person when talking to servants at all, but always say "Susan needs to do this and that" instead...

Everyone's nature is a little good and evil, according to Strange Case of Jekyll & Hyde, you can't have one without the other, and if you repress everything that is evil in your nature you're not being authentic to your true self. Jekyll wanted to get rid of what was evil in him, his worst impulses, the parts of himself he's ashamed of and hides, by literally splitting his dual nature into a separate entity, Hyde, so he could live more comfortably without it, so he could be only good and honest and pure, the model upstanding citizen he pretends to be at his high society clubs, even though no one's that perfect. Everyone needs some balance. What I like about his drug is if you are out of balance, it brings out whichever side of your nature you've repressed: too honest, it brings out your dark side; too bad, it brings out what's good in you. It punishes you for the act of repression. It punishes you for the crime of not being true to yourself, to both sides of your nature.
