stuff soshi thinks you should watch no. 28: super turbo power punch (wafellmaker, 2025)

this one comes in the "maxed" flavor...and in widescreen! woo!

(hey, there are some spoilers down here! give this a watch and get blown away first!)

i reserve really impactful animations for sundays. and my god did this have an impact.

who cares! i love it!

this is a canadian cartoon thing by an indie animator named wafellmaker, who's also done other projects like ultrasonic overhand and ace soda.

i believe all of his projects are mostly done solo? i know in this project he did the animation and some of the voices himself, with some voices provided by someone named corgan? fleshed-out credits would be nice, but nonetheless...

wafellmaker says super turbo power punch took inspiration from studio trigger. and you know what? i can definitely see it! the animation and the story are both over-the-top, but in a good way.

first, the animation. there's a lot of really neat camera angles, and the use of saturated colors really draws me in. all of it really fits the energetic tone that this show's going for. they're rad, as damien would say!

another thing: the keepers' designs are top-notch. i love how you have these beings who are basically gods dressed up in...i guess 80s cyberpunk clothing? i don't know much about fashion aesthetics lmao

so i don't know how to describe it, but i do know that i like how it looks.

one little thing i like, too: the effects! i was going to focus on just the smears for this part, but there a so many good effects here, from the little bursts to the beams of light...here's just some of effects i loved!

i think what i like best about the effects are the little neon glow that they have. i don't know what it is about sunday animations and having bright neon lights, but maybe it just speaks to how much i love them, haha.

as for the story... (hey hey hey even more spoilers down here!)

i love the idea of a guy who wants revenge so badly that he ends up destroying reality with a tetherball spike.

i don't want to compare this to trigger too much, because i think it's great in its own right, but super turbo power punch definitely feels like the type of thing trigger would make if they ever tackled some sort of sports series. i mean, they had that baseball episode in bna...but, ah, i digress.

even with the story's high stakes, there's still a lot of humor to be found. super turbo power punch doesn't take itself too seriously, and i'm glad it doesn't, because i think it just makes the plot that much more memorable.

one little critique that i have: the music fits great with a lot of things, but i did notice that some of the songs had lyrics in them, which kind of made it harder to focus on scenes that focused more on dialogue (this is most prominent in episode 4). it's a small thing, though. the choices in music are really awesome!

all in all, super turbo power punch is one of the raddest things i've watched this week, which is really saying something because everything else this week has been pretty rad, too.

honestly, "rad" pretty sums up how it feels to be working in such an exciting field.
