random Krupp headcanons
-I skew towards him being more of a chauffeur/bodyguard than more militaristic. He’s a six-axle experimental diesel-heavy bimode engine of some kind built in collaboration with a German company, who got fired from long distance passenger service from being too heavy/rough on the rails (ala Amtrak’s failed six-axle engines from the 70s). He ends up hauling Electra around the country, quietly hoping a freight railroad will notice him, but ends up in this role pretty much permanently. He likes getting to go everywhere and being relatively unhurried vs what his intended job would be. This is vaguely based on the EMD F69PHACs, though he’s a nonspecific model who’s kind of a more antiquated ALP-45DP in my head. I can also see him as a guard caboose ala what some military and nuclear transport trains have (this works well for short, racing Krupp) or even ā€œICBM launcher hidden in a boxcarā€ but this is based on the engine approach.
-relatively tall (probably 70+ feet long as an engine) and fat and bulky. It’s hard to make 50/50 bimodes even with modern technology without them being LARGE because you have to cram a transformer and diesel prime mover(s) and alternator(s) in there. There's a reason why ā€œmainly electric with limited diesel backupā€ and ā€œdiesel-electric who can run at low speeds on third rail in tunnelsā€ was more common historically. Electra and crew find him fascinating/horrifying and convoluted physically with all the pipes and fluids and complexity of internal combustion. I mean, the guy has four stomachs and two heartbeats and gets gassy vs just overheated if you block his air intakes. Biiig butt and belly, combustion trains are fatter in general because they have to carry their own fuel for long journeys. He is not immune to jiggle physics and will use it to woo other trains. He’s just plain large physically underneath because he’s pretty strong and quick in electric-only mode, and has much larger guts than most trains in general because he’s so complicated equipment-wise. Honestly I could make him endlessly cursed technologically because I think it’s funny to make electric trains the normal easy default and everything else overly complicated (because it’s how it is irl)
-Being a more German design, he’s more complicated but cleaner and less abrasive than typical American diesel engines. He’s just a guy who kind of embraces being a specific shade of big, dirty, and butch, but is painfully aware of how backwards the country is.
-I say he but I’m happy to make most characters in the show genderblind. I see him as widely believed to be butch gay regardless of gender, but actually bi without much preference either way. I’m partial to a Missy Elliott-adjacent nonrep approach playing more off how Kraftwerk is so influential in hip hop.
-Dad friend energy, generally very chill and goofy despite his serious facade. He’s just not good at expressing himself. He’s surprisingly affectionate and usually the most reasonable of the Components. Likes a lot of silly German things like music that goes oonst oonst, juice, gummies, pretzels, and carnival rides that spin way too much. You can just leave him on a Gravitron and he’d love it. In a more human form I think he’s the token ā€œgarbage disposalā€ of the group who eats everyone’s too-crispy fries and other rejects and leftovers.
-He’s actually higher maintenance than Electra, internal combustion is just way more complicated than actual electric trains (infrastructure causes most of their problems). It’s an intimate, comforting thing having others help start him up or check fluid levels. Wrench does more involved things and knows his physical peculiarities well, but a lot of it’s just grunt work. There’s a lot of listening to exhaust and engine sounds with a stethoscope because it’s cute and silly. Because he’s a bimode he can sometimes swap the other way to work around a physical breakdown (like going into diesel mode if wires are down or electric mode if he’s having engine-related trouble). At least he has AC motors and doesn’t have brushes to fool with.
-He can tank a lot of hits based on size alone but usually prefers to scare threats off before getting physical. Which he’s also very good at.
-While often thought to be humorless, he loves slapstick and being the ā€œstraight manā€ in jokes and keeping running gags going forever with a straight face (Apparantly a very German thing?). The longest running one is him being the scapegoat for all farts, even if there is a dog sitting right there blatantly to blame
-he’s not good at making things from scratch but great at repurposing and remixing (a play on how much Kraftwerk gets sampled)
-Him and Electra are both good at navigating. The difference is he can actually drive. He’s good with driving a wide variety of machinery and has a good ā€œfeelā€ for it in general. He’s probably forklift certified. He gets annoyed by science fiction that handwaves away how weird early electrification was or how messy and unreliable early internal combustion was, because he knows both and can smell their bullshit.
-He loves submarines, divorced from the historical context. They’re also diesel-electric and heavily associated with Germany. If there is a submarine museum he always wants to go in it and usually has a bad time because those are tight spaces and he is a large human.
-Hates the cold and gets runny noses in it, this is widespread with diesel engines though
-Has volunteered as a generator for a town that lost power at least once.

1953 Dodge ā€˜Zeder’ Storm Z-250
1953 Dodge ā€˜Zeder’ Storm Z-250 Concept with body by Bertone
One-off
The Storm Z-250 was developed by Chrysler engineer Fred Zeder to evaluate the feasibility of producing a vehicle that would capture a portion of the growing American sports car market.
Built on a rigid tube frame chassis (built mostly by Chrysler engineer, John Butterfield, in his basement), it was intended to be a dual-purpose sports/racing car because Zeder Jr. envisioned a car with swappable bodies.
In 1952, while on Christmas vacation in Europe, Zeder visited Fiat's Chief Engineer in Turin.
Dante Giacosa recommended a visit to Bertone.
Though they were busy designing and building the Alfa Romeo BAT series, they agreed to build the body for Zeder's new car and promised three months to finish the car.
It took nine months to finish.
Unique to the Storm Z-250 was that the comfortable ā€˜touring’ body could be removed by unscrewing four bolts and replaced with an ultralight 150-pound fiberglass body for ā€˜racing’.
The mechanical components of the car included a Dodge hemi V8 truck engine with 260hp and 330ft-lbs of torque.
Other parts came from Plymouth and Dodge vehicles, including brakes, radiator, clutch, fuel tank, rear axle, and the steering system.
The transmission was a new unit developed by the Spicer Division of Dana Corporation.
The Storm did not reach the assembly line because high production costs would have made it too expensive to sell in profitable quantities.
The Z-250 would have competed with the Ford Thunderbird, Chevrolet Corvette, and the Kaiser-Darrin.
Zeder drove the Z-250 for 16 years.
He loaned it to the Northwood University where it remained until 1992.
Unfortunately, water leaked into the cylinders so the engine was removed and replaced with a 1965 Dodge V8 with two four-barrel carburetors.
After the work was completed, Zeder continued to drive the car in his home in California.
