au where lightning is a naïve new racer in the racing world who is easily swayed by people willing to exploit him and while is kind, will create enemies without wanting to by saying things out of the blue that comes to mind because he doesn't know what harm they could cause to his reputation, and how dangerous it is for him to jab an important person's ego especially in this industry. Mack, Rusty and Dusty, and Strip and Linda are really the only ones who truly care about him, with the dinoco couple being exceedingly worried about what could happen to him as his career progresses

so then he crashes into radiator springs and this is also where i introduce the prospect of evil!radiatorsprings except for sally and mater, while doc hates him the most out of jealousy of him still being strong and fast and capable of racing. The rest of the town blatantly either try to exploit him because of his fame and fortune, and/or mock him for his mannerisms which he laughs along with innocently.

sally one day breaks the news to him while they're at the wheel well that the town isn't laughing with him, they're laughing at him, at which point his seemingly permanent smile drops, and his eyes look down in sadness. when he's driven out of town by the press, and later on after the race where sally, mater, mack, and the rest of the rusteze sponsor group is celebrating with him despite losing, he still has that same sense of melancholy that he had when he really lost his gullible nature.

he admits to sally one night, that if he ever had a kid, he'd want them to be a fool, because that's the only way anyone can be truly happy in this world at least to him, to be clueless of the cruelty around you. (taking a lot of inspo from daisy from the great gatsby here lolol anyway hope u liked this)

It didn't help that Harv, his supposed agent keeps Lightning ignorant and does a lot of damage control behind the scenes and coaches Lightning through the many many PR firms whenever a new controversy stirs up. Also that Harv's army of lawyers also tied up Lightning with predatory contracts and deals so he can't just up and leave and Sally is a very big help in severing those ties after the race.

Lightning retires from racing and now doesn't know what to do with his life anymore. After having another private talk with Sally, he decides to go on a bit of a road trip around the world to try to figure himself out. He'd call Sally no matter where to tell her about the new things he's experienced and discovering new sides of himself, but some of that melancholy never leaves him.
