It was a country music festival—I hate country music but I went to support my aunt who loves it rip. Did get to go the kid rock bar tho. It was an awesome concert. It was also a redemption for me as the last Rascal Flatts show I went to ended early because of lightning and thunder (in Phoenix), so yay for me as I got to see a full concert of theirs this time.

The only one whose intentions I can't entirely understand is Nick. Like Boston is pretty harmless, he is just a hoe and a shitty friend. Mew is straight-laced and could be devilish, but pretends to be a kind of a saint to get away with things. Top is just a red flag, all around. Ray is broken in a way he himself doesn't understand and (falsely) projects loving Mew will resolve all his hurt. Sand is a walking green flag, at least so far. But Nick, I don't know, I can't tell if he's just starting out as a Machiavellian villain that'll do a double kill on both Boston and Top, or he is just obsessed with Boston to hurt him but keep Boston on a leash.

In this series, Raymond is my #1, but Nicolas is my strong #2, and it's partially because they remind me of a good ass country song.

Think Brokeback Mountain's Jack Twist screaming his legendary line "I wish I knew how to quit you" because that shit is a good ass country song delivered in one line.

Yes, I wrote "country song" in a post about Thai gays.

See, I love music. I have a large collection of vinyl records and CDs. I like going to music festivals and concerts. I love rap for its wordplay. I love ranchera for the dramatics ("El Rey" anyone?). And I love country for its storytelling.

So the second Nick called Top instead of Mew, I heard Dolly Parton's iconic "Jolene"

In case you are not familiar with the legend who is "Jolene," the song deals with a woman begging another woman to not take her man. This woman knows she cannot compete with Jolene. She knows she is not as beautiful or alluring, so she begs Jolene to let her man go, in hopes that he'll come back to her.

Hopefully, I won't be hearing Dolly Parton's other masterpiece "I Will Always Love You" (yes, the one that Whitney Houston covered for The Bodyguard).

And I always hear the incredible Patsy Cline's "Crazy" whenever Nick looks at Boston.

Crazy for thinking that my love could hold you I'm crazy for trying and crazy for crying And I'm crazy for loving you

Because even though Nick is matching Boston's "No Boundaries" energy, he isn't malicious, not yet anyway. No.

Nick is in love, with a guy who doesn't love him back.

And he knows that.

But knowing doesn't help when it comes to matters of the heart.

Other genres have songs that capture the feeling of losing your mind over someone who doesn't love you and being incapable of stopping, but a good ass country song just really hits at the core of that kind of toxic love.

Like Dan + Shay's "How Not To" which tells the story of a man who knows that his lover is no good, but doesn't know how not to love them.

So I read Nick as a boy in desperate love with the wrong man. He is Rascal Flatts "What Hurts the Most" when the lead singers croons that the worst part of his love was "not seeing that love in you."

And that type of love makes you do crazy shit.

Boston was honest in the beginning that he didn't want anything serious, and even though he has changed his tune when needed, everyone else has warned Nick as well about Boston.

Nick knew who walked into his store the second he looked into Boston's eyes.

Yet he couldn't stop himself from falling in love.

If Oh No! Here Comes Trouble taught me anything, it's that love can be an obsession mostly when grieving love, and Nick has to be grieving the love he knows he will never get from Boston while still loving him.

So this is why Nicolas is my #2. He is a good ass country song about a man who hopes that his love will make his lover stay, only to realize that his love isn't enough and probably never will be.

And before any of you ask, Ray is the drinking side of good country songs, but he and Sand in particular are "Tennessee Whiskey"

Rascal Flatt's classic, sung with my old childhood loves (pfft, I'd so go to 10 BSB concerts in my 30s and again at any point in my life, it'd be the best thing ever, actually)? I'm unable to resist. I'm already jamming out, and singing along in my chair.

Omg, also a TS fan since debut and I massively took a step back from her personally prior to the reputation era because of her antics and victim complex. The music will always mean so so much to me, her lyrics mean so much to me, but her actions as a person and TS™️ as an entity is just weird and greedy. I think she accrued a lot of fans when she disappeared for a while who've completely constructed a narrative in their heads of who she is and they believe it and are eating up this current era, but those who've been here a long time know how PR and image driven it is. Exhausting.

My Aunt bought me the Debut album CD at a concert after seeing her open for Rascal Flatts. She was like "I thought that you would like her!" and she was RIGHT Taylor Swift became my entire personality. One of my FAVORITE core memories as a child was the day Fearless came out. For some reason we didn't have school, and my Mom and I watched Taylor on the Ellen show, and then we went to Target and bought the physical CD, we then drove around town so we could listen to it together. My mom hasn't been well and that is one of my favorite memories of us together. It's silly but when you're in middle school that kind of thing is important to you. Then in high school I actually got MADE FUN OF for wearing Taylor merch and being excited about Red. BUT I loved her music and felt like she actually stood for something, so I brushed it off and continued to be a HUGE Swiftie. I had the Taylor Swift dolls, I had the perfumes, I had the LOVE LOVE LOVE bracelet, I had the sundresses from WALMART. I saw her on the Fearless and 1989 tours, I had the fucking 1989 haircut. I was supposed to go to Loverfest.

I was still a HUGE Swiftie during the post 1989-pre Reputation eras, then the Reputation era. I'm a few years younger than her, but I felt like I could relate to the kind of manic panic that she was sharing with us (lol turns out I was just unmedicated and we're doing much better now). It felt (in my probably naive mind) like she was experiencing the same insecurities that I was and reacting accordingly. Was she playing the victim at times? Oh 100% BUT I also fully believe that she thought she was one. (Plus... Kim is my least favorite Kardashian lol)

I LOVED the Lover era even as it was shit on at the for the sunshine rainbow hyper colorful aesthetic. Like, I don't know if new fans realize but when Lover was released? It was NOT as beloved as it is now. Then Folklore and Evermore were absolute genius, it felt like Taylor had grown up, and she got all of these new fans, which was great! She was in an "adult" relationship and her music and publicity choices seemed to reflect that. It was so refreshing to see a celebrity keeping their personal life, personal, and sharing what they wanted to share through music. Midnights broke all kinds of records, again, amazing! Even if it wasn't as strong as say Folklore. I fought for my life and got Eras Tour tickets (opening weekend!!) I had the BEST TIME EVER.

Taylor has always been extremely calculated with her public image. She was over exposed during The 1989 era and the public turned on her, so I truly cannot figure out why she is doing it again 100x in this new era of whatever the fuck this is. I don't know her, maybe she is legitimately happy, or maybe this is a cry for help. But I have been so grossed out by her behavior lately, and how in your face everything is with Kelce. It's no secret that I hate Kelce (and people that know me IRL know that it's not a new Taylor related thing lol) and if she actually loves him, fine, that's great for her, BUT we don't need to see it! Yes she was public when she was dating Calvin but ALSO she was what 25-26? She's a 34 year old woman now with the biggest platform of any celebrity ever. She feels too old (and this is not me age shaming her because I would be grossed out if my friends were doing it, and I would be embarrassed if *I* were to ever do it) to be licking a man's face in public like this. This feels like sorority girl in her first college relationship (I was *in* a sorority for a hot second so this isn't hate on sorority girls either!) and not record breaking Grammy award winning artist. ALSO I feel like she used to come across as so articulate and well spoken? Controversial opinion but I thought she sounded like a fucking idiot in that Time Person of the Year piece.

I think that this whole thing is PR for something, but because it just feels too icky to be real, but I don't know what it's PR for, (trying to bury the Matty situation from May? Because if so that just makes me even more sad for him or trying to get back at Joe? Which if that's the case, I feel bad for him too and she's even more immature than I thought) and now, for the first time, AFTER SIXTEEN YEARS I'm embarrassed to be a fan of her, both because of her own actions and also the actions of her fanbase as a whole.

It feels really weird, and I know I'm being parasocial about it, but when the times got bad I always had her music to fall back on and now I just, I don't know it feels cheapened somehow because the current image that's being crafted doesn't match the one that we originally fell for. And you know what, people change, she's a celebrity, I don't know her, what she does DOES NOT affect me any way, and how I feel does not AFFECT HER in the slightest, and I know it's being parasocial but I feel like a big part of me is in mourning about it. Less because of her changing her image so drastically, and more so because I feel like I'm mourning the loss of childhood and joy that used to be associated with her music for me and I think that's what's making me the most sad.

I have Eras tour tickets for one of the London dates this summer. I'm probably going to still go, because I paid for them, and I also have tickets to see Noah Kahan that same week in London (... and also the Longines tour has ALSO decided that the London stop is that week...) But I don't consider myself a "big fan" anymore. Maybe I will be one day again, but this current image that she's putting out just isn't it for me.

Sorry for the longest Taylor related novel in existence, I have had a lot of bottled up feelings about this that feel ridiculous typing out and sharing out loud BUT I know I will feel better sending them into the interwebs and your ask was the perfect catalyst.

“why is alistair driving? i wanted to drive." samantha pouts from her position stuck between max and frances. the five of you had decided on renting a car to drive down to a vacation town not too far from redwood.

"it's nothing against you sam." you smile from the passenger seat. "ali rented the car so it's easier if he drives. when we rent the next car, you can drive."

"no! she can't." frances blurts out as everyone gives her a confused look. "i just don't really want to die anytime soon."

"don't be so dramatic frankie. if you're so scared of my driving, why don't you drive then? oh wait, you can't!"

"i think," max starts loudly to interrupt. "i think we should play some music and also, i should sit in the passenger seat. my legs are cramping stuck in the back."

"hey, i'm tall and you don't see me complaining maxy max." sam rummages in her handbag for some lipgloss as she speaks. she applies a thin layer. "wait. actually i will complain. i should drive and maxy should sit in the passenger seat." "that's not fair." frances says.

"life isn't fair honey and max and i are the oldest. we have the most life experience of driving and being in the passenger seat." max nods slowly at sam's explanation. "okay." alistair says, as everyone looks at him. "i'm going back to the car rental place."

"wait? what?" you say.

"i need a bigger car."

"for my legs?" max asks.

"for me to drive?" sam says. "because i'm fine driving this one."

"no, i need a bigger car with a bigger stereo system so that i don't have to listen to you guys."

"now that's just unnecessary." sam pouts. "i'll be quiet. i promise."

"thank you." ali smiles in the mirror so that samantha can see.

"but, i want to play some music."

"okay, that's fair." ali nods to you to pass sam the cord to plug her phone in. she smiles at you and taps on her phone for a few moments before suddenly a recognisable song plays. flooding the car with guitar noises. it's life is a highway by rascal flatts.

"seriously sam." ali's lips are flattened. "the cars soundtrack?"

"c'mon ali." frances grins. "it is a good song."

max nods as samantha sings along. after a moment, all three of the passengers at the back are attempting to sing. you roll your eyes and join in after a while. alistair keeps his eyes focused on the road but you can see his lip quirk up for a moment.

"best impromptu car concert ever. you really brought it all together with your backing vocals." samantha nods at max as he places a hand on his heart.

"thank you samantha. backing vocals is really where i shine." "we should start a band maxy."

"i was thinking the exact same thing!" "we're in sync." the two start to dramatically point their index fingers against each other in a synchronised gesture, as the three of you stare in confusion.

"this wouldn't happen if you let samantha drove." frances said.

"but you said she couldn't drive and she'd kill us!" you respond.

"yeah, well, i changed my mind. anything is better than watching this."

you all laughed at frances' deadpan expression. obviously the possibility of a band forming might have been a whimsical idea, but the bonds you were building were very much real, woven tightly together by the threads of music and the open road.

Okay, so…

I grew up in the Connecticut suburbs, not far from the casinos. And my sister and I were huge fans of TS’s debut album. We would insist on my parents playing it in the car and belt out the sassiest rendition of Picture to Burn you ever did hear. So, when we found out she was playing as opening act for Rascal Flatts (my parents are die hard country music fans so yes, I knew who Rascal Flatts was at age 7), we begged our parents to get tickets. We called and called, and eventually we lucked out.

About a week before the concert, we went to our local Walmart and bought TS shirts, and when the time of the concert came we showed up in cowgirl boots/ hats and our new shirts. Little did we know how much this would pay off.

So, we get to the venue early, and we see that there’s a raffle going on to get backstage tickets to meet TS, so we get in line to enter because we have time to kill. Over the speaker, they announce there’ll be two more tickets for backstage chosen in the raffle because a couple who won them over the radio couldn’t make it to the venue/ show. Well, one of the guys running the raffle sees my sister and I decked out in our country Taylor Swift getups, and walks up, pulls us aside with our parents, and asks

“How would you like to meet Taylor Swift?”

My sister and I (I am 7, she is 9), are speechless, and just squeak out “yes!”, while my parents are incredibly skeptical that this man is messing with us. Still, they follow as he leads us backstage. When we get to the room where TS is, they’re not allowed in, and they deadass almost don’t let us go, thinking this guy is trying to kidnap us. But the door cracks open as the previous raffle winner walks out and they see TS is genuinely in there, so they let us go in.

It’s all kind of a blur. She hugged us and took the picture attached in my previous post. She was very nice and very tall. My sister, who is also named Taylor, informed her that her name was also Taylor and TS was like “NO WAY! That’s so cool”.

Then they let us go and pick out the next raffle winner after our time was up, and my sister PULLED OUT HER OWN NAME from when we had entered. It was too funny.

So yeah. Then it was about time to get our seats and that was that. TS was amazing, and we left halfway through Rascal Flatts cause the sound was way too loud and not mixed well with the vocals and they kind of sucked. TS was so energetic and commanded the stage though, and did a badass rendition of Should’ve Said No while dramatically playing a giant steel drum that I’ll never forget because that song was my SHIT when I was 7.

And that’s the saga of how I met Taylor Swift when she was opening act and only had one album out! My sister and I have been Swifties from the very begging, and now she’s going to the Eras Tour this month!

DeMarcus has worked with such acts as the legendary band Chicago, Ronnie Dunn, Kix Brooks, Shenandoah and Reba. He was also honored in 2020 for his work producing Jason Crabb's album Unexpected which was named "Best Roots Gospel Album” by The Recording Academy.

Singer, songwriter and bassist Jason Scheff is most known as the bassist and lead vocalist for the band Chicago, one of the longest-running and best-selling music groups of all time, for over 30 years. After leaving Chicago in 2016, Scheff participated as a judge for American Super Group and has now joined Jay DeMarcus in the group Generation Radio.

Sunday's activities will also include the popular Stadium SUPER Trucks, GT America, the GR Cup on track, and a post-race concert with fan favorite Tim Dugger immediately after the INDYCAR race.

The Big Machine Music City Grand Prix, an action-packed three-day motorsports festival weekend, features the NTT INDYCAR SERIES, along with INDY NXT, GT America, GR Cup, the Big Machine Spiked Cooler Trans Am TA2 Series, and Stadium SUPER Trucks along with some of the biggest names in entertainment.
