On this day in 2014, Tamir Rice was shot and killed by a police officer outside a recreation center in Cleveland, Ohio.
Tamir was only 12-years-old. Black boys deserve to make it to and through adulthood.
Rest in power, Tamir — your life mattered.

Happy birthday Oscar Wilde!
Irish writer Oscar would be 170 today, the 16th of October. Here’s a few fun facts to celebrate:
When Oscar wrote The Picture of Dorian Gray in 1889, it was censored before publication because it was Too Gay. The uncensored version was only published in 2011.
Also in 2011, Oscar’s tomb was surrounded by perspex, to protect it from being eroded by the thousands of kisses left on the stone by admirers.
Oscar was a great fan of queer American poet Walt Whitman. They met in 1882, and Oscar later wrote to his friend George Ives: “I have the kiss of Walt Whitman still on my lips.”
Check out our podcast if you want to celebrate the day by learning more about Oscar!

OTD in 1492, Spain signed a decree expelling its entire Jewish population.
Convert or leave.
Centuries of culture erased overnight.
But Sephardic Jews carried their traditions across the world.
A story of loss—but also of resilience.

On August 20, 1942, Princeton student Henry Lind '43 wrote to the NAACP to request resources for his senior thesis. “I am particularly interested in the extent of contribution which the Negro in the United States is making toward the war effort and also in the Negro’s attitude toward the war,” he said.
Lind assembled a variety of primary sources for his the thesis, "Neglected Man-Power: The American Negro in World War II." Several of these sources were included within his bound volume. This page is taken from a pamphlet by the Urban League found in a pocket on the inside back cover of Lind's thesis.

On This Day in 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks became the first Black American to win a Pulitzer Prize, for her collection of poems “Annie Allen.”
Ms. Brooks used her poetry to share the power and struggles of everyday Black Americans, including family, war, honor, and hardships.
We honor her today as one of the most influential 20th-century American poets. ✍🏾 🙌🏽

This postcard sent from Princeton on December 4, 1905 reads:
You should have been here on the 2nd. We never had such thousands. It was astonishing. The Army & Navy game & the President brought 'em. M. M. H.
This refers to the Army-Navy football game played at Princeton on December 2, 1905. It drew U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and about 22,000 other people to campus as spectators.
As for the image itself, it is of the "New Library" (East Pyne Hall).
Historical Postcard Collection (AC045), Box 1.
