I’m leaving for my trip today! I managed to get a lot of writing done for Chapter 49 before then so I can hopefully post that soon after I get back!!

Until then here’s a throwback to a previous chapter… (That may or may not be very related to this next one).

A Watcher’s Redemption: Chapter 13

“Grian! Get down from there!” Pearl yelled up at him as he pillared up to the Watcher statue.

Grian laughed as he placed the last of his TNT on the statue and ignited the fuse. He jumped off the tower and glided down landing next to Pearl nearly falling into her arms as he giggled mischievously. “They’re going to be so mad!” Grian continued laughing as they both watched the Watcher’s statue be blown up.

“Oh my gosh Grian!” She laughed along with him, “That’s so bad! I can’t believe you actually did that!”

“You dared me to.”

“No I didn’t!” Their laughter settled down to occasional giggles. “I just said the statue was ugly.”

“I fixed it for you!”

“No Grian! We’re going to be in so much trouble!” They continued to laugh as they wandered away.

“Eh, you’ll be fine. I’m the one They don’t like, They won’t be very harsh on you.” He nudged her shoulder.

“Yeah well I still don’t want you to get in trouble.” She smiled at him.

“I’m not afraid of Them. They deserve to be blown up.”

“Alright Gri, if you say so.” As they were walking away Pearl looked at him with a grin and a playful glint in her eye. “I’ll race you to the top of that hill! Readysetgo!” Pearl took off with a big flap of her wings. The white feathers practically glowing in the moonlight.

“Hey wait! Which hill?!” Grian took off after her and caught sight of where she was going. It was the hill that he’d terraformed the cliff face of just yesterday. It was right next to Downtown Evo, Grian smirked. Pearl was above him flying high to soar over a couple trees and buildings, heading straight for the top of the hill. Grian however, dipped low. He expertly cut around obstacles and flew straight for a window he knew he hadn’t yet put glass in. He flew precisely through the window into the building and out again on the opposite wall landing on the hill with a flash of his red wings just seconds before Pearl.

“Come on! No fair!” She tackled him as she landed so that they were both laying side by side on the ground.

“I agree!” Grian could barely get out through giggles. “You didn’t give me any warning!”

“That was the point!”

“Well it didn’t work very well!”

Pearl lightly punched his arm. “Cheater.”

Grian huffed out a laugh and rubbed where she punched him. “Sore looser.”

They both laughed at their stupid competition. Neither of them moved from laying on the ground, instead they both watched the stars as their laughter died down into a comfortable silence.

“Pearl?” Grian said softly.

“Hmm?”

“Do you- Who do you think is pretending to be the Watchers?”

Pearl thought about it for a moment. “I dunno, I guess it could be anyone really. My guess is Martyn.”

“… I guess. Though I don’t think he’d be the one to make so many puzzles. I don’t- I’m not sure who could be doing this on the server.” He was silent for a while, thinking things over. “You don’t think- the Watchers aren’t real, right?”

Pearl could hear the nervousness in his voice. “Well, legends always come from somewhere.” She started. “If there wasn’t some kind of threat out there I don’t think Central would be so paranoid.” She thought about it, still looking at the sky. “But then again, I’ve only heard of the Watchers as a fairytale. So I don’t know, I don’t know if They’re real.”

Grian started to fiddle with some grass in his hand. “Pearl, if I- what if we-“ he paused. “If something happened to the server and I asked you to leave, would you?”

“Not without you.”

“But what if it wasn’t safe? What if we got separated again?”

“We’d be separated anyway if I left without you.” Grian was silent. “And besides, you couldn’t get away from me even if you tried.”

That got Grian to chuckle softly. “Why’s that?”

“The Moon.”

“Hmm?”

She pointed up and gestured with her hand. “Across all the different worlds out there, they each have a different Moon and stars. But even though they’re different, they’re all connected.” She laid her hand back on her chest. “Every server has one, which means if you can be in touch with the Moon, you can be in touch with every world ever created.” She looked at him and grinned. “And that also means, you can’t ever get away from me.”

Grian smiled, “I guess not then.”

“If you ever need help, ask the Moon and I’ll be there, even if it takes me a while.”

“Thanks Pearl.”

Grian had gathered everyone at spawn to prepare to go fight the Ender Dragon and finally settled them down enough to get their attention.

“All right does everyone have what they need? We’re all looking very shiny.” He looked at everyone in their enchanted diamond armor and it made him feel better about this whole thing. Well everyone except-

“Yep! Look at these fancy enchants right here! This is all you need folks!” Martyn cut in, showing off his clearly well used iron armor. It was enchanted though, he’d give him that.

Grian laughed at his antics. “How do you not have diamond yet? Do we need to wait-“

“Nope! I’m perfectly fine. How dare you criticize me.” He smiled back.

“Alright then.” Everyone laughed. “How’s everyone feeling on arrows? I’ve got a chest over here full from my old mob farm, take as many as you need.”

A collection of compliments came from everyone as they joined Grian at the chest and took a couple stacks of arrows.

“Ooo I’ll take some of those”

“That’ll be useful.”

“Thanks Grian!”

“No problem guys.” He stepped back as they finished collecting the materials. “Did anyone think to bring ender eyes? I’ve got a couple.” Everyone looked at each other and shook their heads. “No? Just me then?” He asked. “Well hopefully we have enough.” Grian paused, not really wanting to leave.

“Are we ready to go!” Jimmy spoke up. Everyone joined in and looked to Grian.

“Uh- looks like it. Let’s see where this goes I guess.” Grian’s hands shook as he threw the first eye into the air. “We’re gunna need some boats.” He stated as he ran toward the shore and caught the eye as it fell. He went to the crafting table nearby and quickly made a couple rafts for everyone. “Alright here are some boats for you guys.”

“Wow that’s a lot of boats.”

Grian laughed as everyone got set up in the water. He saw Martyn had put his down but hadn’t gotten in it yet so he ran towards the edge and jumped into it just before he could.

“Did you just nab my boat?” He laughed.

Grian giggled as he rowed away and put his own boat down behind him for the other. Soon enough they were all rowing away onto the next island in their view. He got an idea and a smiled. Looking to the person closest to him he got out his bow and aimed for the wood. “Sorry Zee!” He took his shot and they both fell into the water.

“Hey! Grian!”

“Oh no I broke my boat as well!” Grian laughed at his mistake.

Zee swam over with a grin and splashed Grian before he placed his boat again and got back inside.

“Hey!” Grian placed his as well.

They didn’t last long in them though, everyone had started to break each other’s rafts beneath them. At this point they were close enough to the shore, most of them were swimming, and a couple got out to jump onto land.

“What was the point in having boats there?” Pearl asked, everyone laughing in agreement. “We pretty much swam the whole way!”

Grian shook the water out of his wings, while they were fairly water resistant, swimming in the ocean was definitely enough to get them wet. Pearl did the same. Everyone else rung the water out of their clothes and hair and a minute later they were ready to take off again.

Throwing another ender eye, Grian ran after it following the direction it flew. Before he could catch it as it fell it just disappeared. “Hey where’d it go?”

“Oh did it break? They do that sometimes.” Martyn replied.

“Oh noooo, why.”

“Be careful Grian,” Jimmy came up to him and bumped his shoulder. “Don’t loose them all!” He said jokingly.

“I’m not trying to!” Grian laughed. “I didn’t know they could break.”

They continued to tease each other as they journeyed through the forest and over hills. Grian threw another one as they got further along.

“Oh there goes another one.” The eye he threw broke in the air again. “I hope we don’t need many of these to open the portal.” Throwing his last eye he watched as it went into the ground. “Oh it’s here! It’s right beneath us!”

“Everyone get your shovels!”

They all started digging, getting in each other’s way and making a very jagged hole in the ground.

“I think I’ll wait up here for you guys to finish.” Netty peered down the hole.

“I’ll stay with you.” Pearl agreed.

“Oh we found it!” Jimmy’s voice rang out from deeper down than the rest of them.

“Oh! Guess we’ll go down then.”

Eventually everyone made their way down the hole they’d made, Grian going down last to ensure no one was left behind.

It wasn’t a normal stronghold. When they dropped through they landed in a room that looked handmade. The ceiling was high and decorated and the walls were defiantly not naturally generated. The portal stood at the end of the large room with engraved steps leading up to it. And above that, the Watcher symbol. It was made out of bedrock, looming over the entrance to the portal. Grian immediately got chills. ‘No player has access to bedrock’ he thought.

“Woah cool!” Martyn yelled. The others joined him in celebrating, they made it!

Grian walked over to the portal first. “Looks like it’s lit already. I guess I didn’t need any extra eyes.” Everyone gathered around the portal excitedly. “I-I’ll go first. You guys wait a second before coming through.”

“You’ve got this Grian!” Jimmy yelled.

Looking over everyone Grian got a good look at their faces, the faces of his best friends and sister. The faces of people he had so many good memories with and would do anything for. “I love you guys.”

He jumped through.

“…grian…”

“GRIAN!”

Hot tears were flowing continuously down Grian’s face as he stared off at nothing. The memory of his old friends stabbing through his heart once again. ‘They’re gone, they’re all gone.’ He sobbed, his shoulders shaking uncontrollably as he gripped the blanked on his lap. His breathing was erratic and he cried, the pain of remembering his friends too much for him. The only thing he could think about was how he’ll never see them again. He cried harder, wings gathering around him he trembled.

He couldn’t focus on anything but the memories of Evo. ‘Everything is gone. It’s my fault. They’re all gone.

It was kind of blustery. Squalls ruffled a light cross-chop across Lake Ter’s surface and then blew cold through the sparse trees of the western forest. Coy stood on a stump, watching the recruits’ fairly headless (and now frantic - he had just barked at them) activity with blank indifference.

"Yusrah’elp us… Why are five guys sharpening spears while one poor bastard digs the pit? Two of you jump in- readysetGO!"

The boys froze, glancing at each other not unlike lost puppies, trying to sort out telepathically who was supposed to climb down with the shovels.

"Obey!" Vesper snapped, and immediately four of them scrambled into the hole. Now there were five in the pit, and one left whittling spears.

"WHAT. NO. Why are— OW FUCK," Vesper yelped like he was in physical pain from their idiocy. Metaphorically, he was. But as he opened his mouth to yell, his cigarette dropped from between his teeth and landed on his forearm, which did actually hurt. Coy pinched the bridge of his nose and turned away, shoulders shaking with silent laughter (as happened with Vesper every day). He heard the young commander clamber up and kick a wad of dirt off the edge of the (utterly incomplete) trap pit onto the boys below.
