Jaap Vink — Jaap Vink (Recollection GRM)
Tumblr media
youtube
Even among aficionados of electro-acoustic music, the name Jaap Vink is likely to elicit blank stares. Vink worked in obscurity, releasing very little of his work and consequently failed to develop the same kind of international reputation as his peers at the Institute of Sonology in Utrecht, people like Gottfried Michael Koenig, Werner Kaegi, Paul Berg and Barry Truax. The release of this self-titled album should help to rectify this. Released as part of Recollection GRM, a series of reissues centered around musique concrete pioneer Pierre Schaeffer’s eponymous studio, the CD encompasses eight tracks of ethereal electroacoustic music composed between 1968 and 1985.
An engineer by training, Vink spent 25 years teaching and conducting research at the Institute of Sonology, which helped pioneer digital synthesis. Like other early electronic music innovators, Vink aimed for a synthesis of art with math and science. Vink thought of himself not so much as a composer (“I’m too lazy to compose,” he’s said) as an experimenter and explorer of sound. His fascination with mathematical themes and imagery is made evident on the album cover, which features an Escher-esque series of interconnected squares. This focus on the science of perception carries over to the music; Vink exploits all kinds of psychoacoustic phenomena, probing the limits of auditory perception on tracks like “Granule.” To achieve this, he generated and manipulated feedback using a sequence of tape machines and modular synths rigged together. The cumulative effect is a great wash of droning sound that lasts for most of the album, a sound more in line with today’s ambient and electronic music than with the university-oriented high modernist computer music of Vink’s day. The music is so consistent in its conception that the track divisions almost seem arbitrary, a feat which is all the more remarkable considering that some of the tracks were developed as many as 17 years apart.
Vink aspired to make his sounds seem almost organic, avowedly breaking away from the periodicity of electronic sound to conjure sounds that more closely resemble the soundscape of the natural world: whirring winds, lapping waves, rustling leaves in a forest. What emerges, then, is a kind of conversation between the natural and the electronic, the artificial and the organic, the cognitive and the visceral. On the track “Screen,” what initially sounds like winds sweeping across a barren tundra transmutes into something more closely resembling a jet airplane taking off, Doppler effect and all. “Objets Distants,” meanwhile, transported me to a dentist’s chair; my eyes are shut tight and I’m trying not to squirm as I listen to the drill approaching my teeth. “Granule” is the most effective track on the album, crescendoing slowly and methodically as tones are stacked on top of each other until they coalesce into a throbbing drone of intense visceral power.
The music’s cohesiveness makes it easy to listen to this retrospective album all the way through, perhaps even too easy. The palette begins to feel a bit monochromatic, like pleasant ambient sound and nothing more. Perhaps this album was not intended to be listened to end-to-end, though. Vink was clearly interested in building sonic environments which the listener could inhabit, presumably entering and leaving at will.

NOKO 106 - Applied Sound Arts
last year Editions Mego's Peter Rehberg starts, in cooperation with Christian Zanési and François Bonnet, the revivalism of the impressive GRM archive. now Recollection GRM offers as sublabel the opportunity to get a selection of merits for witness pressed in vinyl. ongoing with Pierre Schaeffer, initiator of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales, the republishing launched in 2012. first with works of Guy Reibel, Bernard Parmegiani, Luc Ferrari, Ivo Malec and Traces One, a compilation. in march 2013, Traces Two follows plus a further member - Iannis Xenakis and his GRM Works 1957-1962.
in this mind, we pursue early electro-acoustic sounds and their pioneers even perceived as musique concrète. that's the point of origin, other composers of the unlasting widen in decades past will know too well how to conduct electric current - a concert of sounds.
Applied Sound Arts - a night of applied arts and adventurous music presented by Fervent Dots Audio in cooperation with contentual historic emphases by Freundeskreis Grassi Museum. acousticians are Kanding Ray (Raster-Noton), Ben Lucas Boysen aka Hecq (Hymen), Architect (Hymen) and Signalstörung aka Fervent Dots (GNM). ASA 2013 - 22 february at Grassi Museum für angewandte Kunst in leipzig, germany.

Lionel Marchetti — La Grande Vallée / Micro-Climat  (Recollection GRM)
Tumblr media
La grande vallée / Micro-climat by Lionel Marchetti
Eleanor Roosevelt probably didn’t have musique concrète in mind when she said, “with freedom comes responsibility.” But nowhere is her assertion more apposite than in the original music to open composition to non-musical sounds. For when an artistic paradigm shifts to make anything possible, the best will recognize that reasons and results have to line up in order to transcend anything-goes mediocrity. Lionel Marchetti is one of the best.
Born in 1967, Marchetti has spent his life locating and sharing the poetry in sound. He’s presented his work via radio, records, downloads, improvisational concerts, and in-person diffusions, but regardless of how he gets it into the world, his source remains just that — the world. Marchetti’s material has included field recordings taken from nature, ethnographic records, synthesizers, feedback, and other people’s works of musique concrete. When he got into the game in the late 1980s, music had reached an inflection point. The advent of mass market samplers meant that it had never been easier to collect and assemble sounds, but ease of use meant that it had also never been easier to make lazy-ass electronic music. From the start, Marchetti’s work has stood as a stern reproach to anything that just settled. Every electronic swell, every huff of wind, and every abrupt, unnamable event has been shaped for impact and effectiveness within its context. Each piece unfolds with a dream logic that feels unassailable, but defies easy decoding.
“Micro-Climat,” one of two 20-minute-long pieces compiled on this splendidly executed LP, is among Marchetti’s earliest recordings. Assembled in 1989-1990, it affirms his command of sound placement. It begins with a constructed call and response between whistles and birds, which ushers in the first of many questions. Who are they calling? Are they supposed to be calling each other? If their makers could really hear each other, would that change what they did next? Each moment unleashes a new set of riddles, and while the changes from one sound to the next often surprise, they never feel arbitrary.
Marchetti completed “La Grande Vallée” between 1993 and 1995. It is an episodic passage through experiences of closeness and distance; as wolves howl far away, leaves rustle close-up and a woman savors a sound from the back of her throat. Sudden impacts disrupt the proceedings, and slowly morphing synth tones thread them together. Like “Micro-Climat,” this piece feels simultaneously inscrutable and certain of its own unexplainable cohesion.
Both of these pieces have been released before on CD, but freshly cut into vinyl, each feels especially vivid. The LP is a worthy addition to the Recollection GRM catalog, which has been the product of the Groupe de Recherches Musicales’ deep catalog and Edition Mego’s production and distribution know-how. Sadly, it’s unclear whether and how the label will continue, given the recent demise of Mego’s founder, boss, and sole employee, Peter Rehberg. Access remains possible, since Marchetti offers this album on his Bandcamp page. But if you like for your sounds to come from solid sources, don’t tarry.
