sorry if sports are a stereotypical example of African-American history, but this example comes to mind with the recent death of Willie Mays:

I knew he was a baseball legend, as a fielder, his most famous play being a dramatic catch at a key moment in the 1954 World Series, but the memorials highlighted how wonderful a player he was all around - what baseball fans call a five tool player (hitting for power, hitting for batting average, fielding, throwing, running), and that he's ranked in the Babe Ruth stratosphere and was also considered a wonderful person.

Also, Major League Baseball has a game scheduled tomorrow at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama - a former Negro Leagues park, near where Mays grew up and where he played for a couple seasons. Mays saying he was too ill to go was his last public statement.

Mays was also godfather to Barry Bonds, likewise an MLB legend even more amazing than I thought (Bonds while a recordsetting power hitter also regularly won defensive awards and store a lot of bases for a slugger though had a steroid problem and a reputation as a pain in the butt person)

We're on Chapter 6 and it's already not looking good, guys.

It seems that Night and Riverstar are being set up as shipbait. Flutter is downplayed as soon as chapter 4, it's a RECORDSETTING fridgening.

Night seems to have lost a previous husband and children and that's why she's so sad right now. I'm not sure if I'm counting that as Dead Wife Angst yet.

Riverstar has only been in the territories for as long as the Tribe cats. Liked the idea of a mysterious, wise loner type who knows the territory better than our protagonists? Too fucking bad, it's gone.

He was also stuck in a human home all winter long, just like Turtle Tail. Lol.

He doesn't even know One Eye yet, the way that DOTC implies he did. This could change in a later chapter but if you've ever enjoyed the idea they could have been close before the main story, that's gone too.

And of course, River Ripple whines that self defense against Clear Sky would make him Just As Bad. Just like every other protagonist in the Battle Cat Prequel series.

So in conclusion, the first 6 chapters are just events from DOTC but worse. Looks like it's going to be another one in the format of Onestar's Concussion.
