Grad School and Reputation Management Strategies
  As a PR graduate student at Full Sail University, I’ve had the opportunity to develop my professional skills at an accelerated pace. Prior to taking the course Reputation Management Strategies, my original goal was to understand the process of managing a company’s reputation when a crisis hits. In a world where technology provides instant access to any information you are inquiring about, I also anticipated learning how to track and monitor public sentiment during a crisis. My final expectation for the course was to learn how to craft appropriate messages to the public and shareholders without providing too much information about the company I represent.
    After taking the course Reputation Management Strategies, I have learned my original expectations and much more. According to clinical professor Elliot Schreiber, at LeBow College of Business, reputation management can be described as the sum of a company’s image and its identity, this course taught me that reputation is an outcome and cannot be managed. Strategies and plans are implemented by professionals who track and monitor a company’s image compared to the company’s identity to determine gaps that can be reduced and minimized to build reputation.
    In RMS I also learned how to develop effective communication and crisis communication plans that are used to prepare a company before a crisis occurs. Crisis communication plans include developing a team with specific members who each have specific roles in the event of a crisis. In a crisis it’s important to determine who can speak to the media and who cannot. Media training along with specific messages that are crafted and practiced for each crisis. Having the right tools and meeting location is also necessary in a communications plan.
    This course urges PR professionals to research prior businesses’ reputation management strategies if any and learn from prior PR nightmares.
    Upon finishing the course Reputation Management Strategies, the course has provided me more knowledge and preparedness to effectively manage and maintain a company’s reputation.
