Comic Book Saturday

Batpig was bitten by a radioactive bat (and his best friend) and gained powers. Gary (aka Batpig) decides that he has to use his powers for good. Except, it’s not quite that easy. He has to sort out a costume, has to get himself a zinger, oh, and learn how to properly defeat the villains too.

This was such a hilarious book. I loved the character of Gary, but, also, the secondary characters of Carl the fish and Brook the bat were awesome too. It was such a fun fun read.

"Fingerprints in stolen car: 2 Millhaven escapers sought in Ottawa," Toronto Star. July 15, 1972. Page 1 & 2. ---- Special to The Star OTTAWA - Thirty heavily armed detectives are searching here for two of the 14 convicts who escaped Monday night from Millhaven penitentiary.

The search was prompted by fingerprints found in a stolen car Thursday night.

The car was reported stolen Wednesday in Kingston.

The fingerprints belong to Thomas McCauley, 35, of Edmonton, and Donald Oag, 23, of London.

Police said the car was found near the Eastview Hotel in suburban Vanier City which was robbed of $340 late Thursday. They also say both men have been seen separately in downtown streets.

McCauley was serving 25 years for armed robbery and escaping custody. A previous escape made him the first prisoner ever to from Millhaven's maximum security jail.

Oag was serving 11 years for assault causing bodily harm, escape. robbery and manslaughter. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter fol. lowing the riot at Kingston penitentiary in April. 1971, which left two prisoners dead.

There is no doubt that McCaulev and Oag are armed. When police found the blue 1963 Chevrolet Nova, they also found 16 inches of the end of a double-harrel shotgun on the floor. It had been sawed off

Along with the car some civilian clothes were also stolen in Kingston and parts of a prison uniform were found nearby. Laundry numbers indicate the uniform was issued to an inmate of Kingston Penitentiary who was killed in the riot there in April, 1971.

Since then federal prison officials have stopped giving convicts numbers so they can't be sure who should have been wearing the garments. Since clothing of dead inmates is reissued, it probably wouldn't provide a solid clue to the identity of the man who dropped it.

Ottawa police established McCauley's prints about noon yesterday.

Four hours earlier he was seen on Bank St.. Ottawa's main street, and shortly afterwards Ong was seen a dozen blocks east of the Parliament Buildings.

The army threw 150 fresh soldiers from Petawawa and Barriefield, on the outskirts of Kingston, into the hunt around Millhaven yesterday as the score stands at seven recaptured and seven still loose. Prison officials believe five escapers are trapped in a roughly L-shaped area between Highway 2 and Lake Ontario.

The soldiers, working in 10-man groups and linked to each other and Ontario Provincial Police patrols by radio, are deployed in close-ranked lines, sweeping south toward the lake. They carry unloaded rifles and each man has five bullets in his left breast pocket.

They are under orders to load their rifles only after receiving permission from an officer or an OPP. LL-Col. Bev Totman, an army public relations officer, said, since the men are working in groups and none of the convicts in that area is believed to be armed, there is no need for loaded guns.

The fresh arrivals bring the total serachers to 275 soldiers and almost 400 police men and prison guards, who have been on the job since the escape was reported and two or three dozen extra OPP, transferred from all over southern Ontario.

Every OPP detachment in the province is short handed on a summer week end, handling traffic, but police fear any of the five still thought to be within a half-dozen miles of Mill-have might become desperate enough to try to seize a hostage to break through the ring tightening around them.

At a dozen roadblocks throughout the area. police are stopping cars, opening trunks and warning motorists not to stop for hitchhikers.

They have also broadcast warnings to area residents to keep their doors and windows tightly locked. Hundreds of phone calls a day are pouring into police stations from jittery residents. Yesterday, police believe. one report of a man seen in a field near Bath was valid but by the time a search party with tracker dogs and helicopter cover arrived the man had faded back into dense scrubland.

The 14 escapers went through a chain link fence after a ball game Monday night, cutting their way with homemade wire snips. director Donald Clark believes. All Millhaven inmates are officially classified as dangerous and most have escaped from other institutions at least once.

But not all are worrying police. Ronald Filion, 25, of Toronto, serving 12 years for attempted robbery and escaping, was walking along the main road toward the prison when he was recaptured Wednesday. He was smiling and listening to his transistor radio and said. "Take me back. I'm tired of the mosquitoes"

In addition to Oag and McCauley, others still at large are Sreto Drambas, 25, Gerald Laroeque, 32, William Yardley, 24, all of Toronto: Rudolph Nuss, 25. of St. Catharines, and Charles Boomer, 32, of Edmonton.

Page 1 & 2. ---- SPENCERVILLE (CP) - A mail truck was hijacked early today near this village 20 miles northeast of Brock ville and the driver forced to take the two men to Dorion, Que., just west of Montreal.

Ontario Provincial Police say the two may be among seven still on the loose fol lowing last Monday's 14-man break from Millhaven penitentiary, near Kingston.

The driver of the truck gave Quebec Provincial Police a descriptions of the men, but said he didn't get a good look at the second.

The driver was not harmed.

Meanwhile, police, troops, and helicopters moved in on two more of the convicts.

A search party cornered them on a peninsula that juts into the Bay of Quinte.

Police said a tracker dog followed the convicts tracks to the bay edge of the peninsula.

The first lead to the pair was supplied by local residents, who called the Ontario Provincial Police. The dog was then brought in.

Comic Book Saturday

This is a different sort of origin story. Mischief and Mayhem (Mischief’s awesome side-cat) are villains. But, they weren’t always. And, this isn’t just the story of all the ways that they are bad to the bone (I mean, spoiling new movies is pretty bad… heh). And, it’s hilarious. It’s so amazingly hilarious. From the name of the town she grows up in, to all the characters. I was just laughing through the whole book. So awesomely funny.
