It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.

On today's episode, I talk to musician and composer Rob Mazurek. Originally from Jersey City, Rob started playing trumpet and cornet in high school after his family moved to Naperville, Illinois. He first learned the foundations of improvised music while studying jazz theory and practice with David Bloom at the Bloom School of Jazz in Chicago, and then became a mainstay of Chicago jazz in the 1980s. In 1994, Rob formed the Chicago Underground Collective with guitarist Jeff Parker and a cast of revolving players, which in turn birthed Isotope 217, both groups releasing albums on the seminal label Thrill Jockey. In the decades since then, Rob founded the Exploding Star Orchestra, has earned numerous commissions and awards, and in general has created more music and art than a short bio can properly elucidate. Earlier this spring, Rob's most recent work for Exploding Star Orchestra, Lightning Dreamers, was released on International Anthem, and like everything else Rob creates, it's wonderful!

Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra/Small Unit - Spectral Fiction

A frequently astonishing live performance captured last year at the Corbett vs. Dempsey gallery in Chicago. Over the course of two long, exploratory tracks, Rob Mazurek guides his Exploding Star Orchestra through some beyond-category zones. You could slot this next to something like Art Ensemble of Chicago's Nice Guys, but it exists on its own plane, following an inner logic and purpose. The "Small Unit" here is full of all stars — drummer Chad Taylor, Angelica Sanchez on the electric Wurlitzer, Damon Locks adding fragments of poetry and abstract electronics. Everyone gets a chance to shine, but it might be Tomeka Reid who lingers longest; during her knotty, gnarly solo spotlights, she suggests an alternate world where Thelonious Monk played cello instead of piano.

La Galleria “Corbett vs. Dempsey” di Chicago è una miniera di piccoli (e grandi gioielli), un vero centro culturale, fucina di artisti e musicisti. Per chi fosse curioso una visita al sito della galleria https://corbettvsdempsey.com/ potrebbe rivelare più di una sorpresa. Tra le tante, una ve la anticipo io: è lì che nel marzo 2023 la “Rob Mazurek Exploding Star Orchestra” con Rob Mazurek (tromba), Tomeka Reid (violoncello), Damon Locks (voce ed elettronica), Angélica Sánchez (piano elettrico), Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (basso) e Chad Taylor (batteria), hanno registrato “Spectral Fiction” uscito qualche giorno fa. E’ facile immaginare l’atmosfera sperimentale e di ricerca in cui spazia questo magnifico lavoro, anche alla luce proprio di questo luogo ad alta tensione creativa che ha fatto non solo da palcoscenico, ma anche da incubatore del progetto. Molto spesso i luoghi possono determinare le giuste vibrazioni per le composizioni e al contempo le composizioni e la creazione non lasciano mai i luoghi così come li hanno trovati. Si tratta di una specie di simbiosi rabdomantica che spesso nel jazz è particolarmente evidente. Il lavoro di Rob Mazurek & Co. è composto da sole due tracce, la prima “Equations of Love in Prismatic Waves of Color” è una lunga ed ininterrotta flanerie nelle emozioni che il suono può far scaturire dal sentimento e da una sorta di flusso di autocoscienza che si materializza nella musica, puntellata dai sussurri poetici della voce di Damon Locks. La tromba di Mazurek si fa discreta quasi fino a scomparire, per lasciare posto all’infinito intreccio sonoro di contrabbasso, violoncello, batteria e pianoforte. Un equilibrio quasi perfetto che si rimette costantemente in discussione in una dialettica continua. Quando si scrive si parte sempre con l’intento di esplorare qui e là il pezzo per vedere cosa ci riservi, ma quando la magia scaturisce, come sempre accade coi dischi e con i concerti di Rob, è difficile perdere anche un solo secondo della sua musica e così i quaranta minuti filati del brano scorrono via veloci, con quel senso della sospensione del tempo, che solo le opere poetiche, visive e musicali sanno dare. Equations of Love in Prismatic Waves of Color” è un ambiente sonoro sempre mutevole che passa con gradualità, o bruscamente, dall’intimismo carico di attesa punteggiata dallo “speach” sporco di Damon Lock, alla disincantata impetuosità sciamanica del groove, cifra stilistica predominante della musica di Mazurek. Il secondo brano dell’album, “Driftless” prende ispirazione da una mostra di Sam Gilliam, grande artista del “drappeggio” scomparso qualche anno fa. Ricordo di aver visto recentemente sue opere alla Fondation Vuitton di Parigi e qualcuna alla Tate modern di Londra qualche anno fa, e l’idea che Rob abbia composto un brano così, non può che rendere l’ascolto del brano ancora più partecipato. Pezzo più pacato e meno tormentato, una specie di una lunga melodia con qualche inserto elettronico e a dominarla è certamente la tromba di Mazurek, sostenuta dalla batteria di Chad Taylor e dolcemente cullata dal piano di Angelica Sanchez. Per concludere qualche nota sulla copertina dello stesso Mazurek, un acrilico (presumo) che si i titola “Film” che è stato realizzato nel 2019. Comincia a non essere più un caso isolato, quello di musicisti e compositori che realizzano “in proprio” le cover dei loro lavori: nel jazz accade spesso, sempre più spesso, quasi a voler sancire la multimedialità della creazione artistica, quasi che la musica da sola non bastasse più, oppure probabilmente, il musicista vuole controllare completamente che il risultato finale sia conforme alle proprie intenzioni. Un fenomeno piuttosto interessante sul quale vale la pena di ritornare.
