Scene Breakdown: What Actually Happened Atop the Hexgates

Hi everyone, this has been bugging me literally since I watched the finale for the first time three months ago and I've been trying to put the pieces together ever since. I still have a lot of questions about the metaphysics of hextech and the alternate timelines (Mage Viktor you frustrate me!!), BUT, setting those aside for the time being, I wanted to break down that final climactic scene atop the hexgates so we can see what actually occurred. A lot happens very quickly, with multiple key elements interacting - Viktor (i.e., the hexcore), the anomaly, the z-drive, and the runestone. This is my best attempt to make sense of it, and I'd appreciate your own theories and feedback! It is rather long but has plenty of pictures.

So, the first very important element to examine is the anomaly - in particular, what Viktor's doing with it and why it acts the way it does in this scene. I still have a great deal of questions about that first point, that is, what role it's playing in the Glorious Evolution, because it's really not super clear. But, as it pertains to what we see in this scene, Viktor says the following -

"The sublime intersection of order and chaos."

Hextech is engineered order, wild runes/anomalies are organic chaos. Both are apparently needed to carry out the Evolution - while Viktor on his own with the hexcore can Evolve individuals, for some reason (help me out here) the anomaly allows him to extend his power and will. I won't say a whole lot on this as it's not super pertinent - but I still intensely question why in the ruined timeline, we see only some Evolved (likely only those who had mind-strings) while the rest of the population just got anomaly-blasted (I refrain from calling it hexcorized as many do, because it literally isn't - it's the corruption we see from the anomaly) and just, Pompeii'd in place. But I digress.

In the hexheart, Viktor frees the anomaly from its chamber, instead moving it to a containment field in his hexcorized staff.

The anomaly hypothetically can only exist in conjunction with the hexgates, or more broadly, concentrated runic activity that wears thin the wall between the material world and the arcane (thus the hexcore may fit this also). It would not persist outside of these conditions. Thus, Viktor keeps it stable in this hexcore force field, allowing him to safely transport it up the gravity chute of the hexgate.

I haven't seen it mentioned before but I don't think Viktor in his Evolved form can actually fly - he appears to rely on the gravity field generated by activating the hexgate gemstone mesh. This creates a concentrated beam that travels up the length of the chute, and we're going to assume here, atop the hexgates as well, in a very narrow field - where Viktor and the anomaly float but not where Jayce and the Evolved stand. This could be a result of him breaking through the dome or not.

He releases the anomaly, where it floats upwards into the sky along what we can presume is the same gravity field.

Key here is that it is still, somehow, tethered to Viktor. If it leaves the hexcore field, it would implode. It's not shown explicitly what this connection is, but it must be there. It is no longer connected to the hexgates - if it were, it would not implode at the end of this scene. It is solely tied to Viktor now.

One thing that remains unclear to me is whether Viktor intended to use the energy of the hexgates to power himself/the anomaly. The concentration of the energy into a vertical beam is stated by Jayce earlier in 2x03, but we never see this - either Viktor was stopped before it could get that far, or it's unrelated and has no bearing here.

The next element here is the z-drive (or inverse anomaly).

There's been plenty of theorizing and speculation about the z-drive, as it was created from inverting the acceleration rune, thus controlling time rather than space. (It is not abundantly clear to me how the anomaly made the jump from a 4-second time travel machine to a reality-hopper thanks to some mysterious tinkering from Heimerdinger... but let's ignore that here). But its role in this scene is actually less than it may seem.

The primary consequence of Ekko launching the unstable z-drive at Viktor is that blasts what I'm calling a time-hole in Viktor's armor (physical, emotional...). This allows Jayce to get through to him where he'd otherwise be impenetrable - yeah yeah, the cosmic yaoi, we've all seen it.

The z-drive does not destructively interact with any other element in this scene - not the anomaly, nor the rune. Just Viktor/the hexcore.

It actually breaks Viktor's staff into pieces, which is a neat detail though I'm not sure it has any impact on events.

It's easy to think that the two anomalies canceled each other out - but that is not what happens, as we'll see. While I don't have a perfect screencap for it, after watching this scene a few dozen times, I can tell you that the rotating cloud cover concealing the anomaly does not change during the z-drive explosion. Those bursts of corruption we see in the above shot are what the anomaly's been doing the whole time. The two anomalies do not affect each other.

The time stop we see during this explosion could either be a visual storytelling effect from the animators (i.e., everything we see actually happens in a split second but time works differently in the astral plane) or the explosion of the z-drive actually creates an isolated time bubble around the top of the hexgates. It is not clear which is true. I'm inclined to believe the former.

That brings us to the runestone, the most complicated element.

The runestone has been embedded in Jayce's body by Mage Viktor, complete with anomaly corruption webbing. Mage Viktor's ultimate plan here is still largely a mystery (and it keeps me up at night). But I maintain, purely speculative, that he did this for a dual purpose - the runestone is now linked in some way to that ruined timeline/with that timeline's anomaly; it glows whenever Jayce activated the alt-hammer, which was able to hurt Viktor (perhaps it was the only thing that could?).

But, relevant here, it appears to act as a pre-programmed set of runic instructions to be read, interpreted, and executed by the hexcore inside Viktor. It activates when placed into Viktor's spectral body, anomaly corruption traveling up his arm. This triggers hundreds of copies of the acceleration rune to burst outwards which frees the souls of the Evolved from their bodies.

These souls travel in the astral plane into a swirling mass that close in on the rune.

We never actually see the souls go into the rune, although we are shown beams of blue light being gathered into the rune on Jayce's wrist, which could potentially be the souls though it could also just be energy/a sign of the rune activation. It's highly unlikely the souls went anywhere else even though visually at times it looks like they're floating near the z-drive - it would make no sense for them to go into either anomaly as those are both about to explode, and it was the rune that beckoned them in the first place. They could just be 'freed' to disperse into the aether, but, ehh, that does not appear to be what's happening based on the visuals.

Most of the souls are sucked into the rune before the spell runs its course and interacts with Jayce and Viktor. The last remaining appear to go with them.

So here's where it all comes together, and everything happens very quickly.

We have the anomaly, in the sky, tethered to Viktor & the hexcore. The z-drive is mid-explosion. The rune is now running its course.

This is what happens in quick succession, in order:

The rune sucks in Jayce, Viktor, and the z-drive explosion.

It's hard to capture in a screencap, but yes, the rune takes the z-drive explosion with it.

2. The shockwave of the z-drive explosion, which had been in progress before it was sucked into the rune, throws everyone back. However, since the explosion is gone, Ekko and others are unharmed. The soulless drones are ragdolled around.

3. The anomaly, no longer connected to the hexcore, becomes immediately unstable and collapses, imploding, which sends a shockwave outwards from the top of the hexgates (both screencaps are of this moment).

Now, I am a wholehearted believer that Jayce and Viktor were teleported elsewhere, and there's plenty of speculation posts both here and on twitter that lay out evidence for why it's likely.

I'll just mention that besides the fact that the blue flicker at the end of the rune's disappearance perfectly matches that of the other example we see of it being used - by Mage Viktor saving young Jayce - it also glitches out:

What does this mean? Potential reality-hopping? Anomaly influence to say the least, perhaps caused by the z-drive explosion interacting with it. I personally don't see why Mage Viktor would embed a pre-set teleportation rune into Jayce's wrist to give to Viktor without the intention of, yknow, teleporting them, especially if freeing the souls was an intended part of his plan. But we may never know.

So there you have it. The play-by-play. The anomaly needs the hexcore and imploded when the connection broke. The z-drive did not cause the anomaly to implode, its only narrative purpose here was to give Jayce the precious moments to reach Viktor. The hexcore is hypothetically still part of Viktor, and we have no idea if getting his face blasted open would be fatal for Evolved Viktor's body were they to get spat out somewhere, nor whether the z-drive would also explode in their faces or just fizzle out in the arcane. Many questions remain, but I hope this clarifies at least the technical aspects of what actually went down atop the hexgates.

A RUNE RENAMED.

It has been in the works for some while, but the rune known as Cho will now be known as Chox going forwards. A necessary change to separate this rune and its presence from a very common surname.

The name of this rune is pronounced as [ t͡ʃoχ].

A new rune list is also being created with a more legible layout, featuring all up to date rune names and vital aspects.

Rune Meditation - Ansuz

Odin was my guide for this meditation. We began by walking through the visuals of my previous rune meditations. He told me that these meditations embody the energy of ansuz and that ansuz is about taping into our highest knowing. Becoming scholars throughout our lives, always educating ourselves. And not just through books and school, but through lived experience - seeing every opportunity as a chance to learn about ourselves and the world in which we live. Sharing that knowledge is of the utmost importance. It helps no one, yourself included, to hoard knowledge. By sharing what we know, he said, we're able to synthesize ideas into new knowledge and ideas that then become wisdom. Shared wisdom. Wisdom is the ultimate forming of knowledge and understanding. Bringing everything we know together with other people really stood out to me. We learn from each other and we learn by teaching others. It's how we connect as a species. The ultimate form of knowledge and wisdom comes from connection with each other and with the higher energies of ourselves and the life around us. Wisdom is knowledge in action. It is deep understanding of and connection with what exists around us.

Oh, and also from last week, Rune got interviewed to go up on the Heck-Yeah-Tron (essentially a floating jumbotron suspended by balloons), and it went something like this:

Interview Host (Lord Bubbles of Squeak): How old were you when you first ate a popsicle?

Rune Lovelace: Let me think. [*long pause*] Um, I think I was about 7. Yeah, that sounds about right. It was a great experience. Life-changing, honestly.

LBoS: How did that experience change your life?

RL: Well, I learned that I liked popsicles.

LBoS, skeptical: And you consider that life-changing?

RL: Well, you asked me how it changed my life, not if it did. The interviewer guides the conversation.

LBoS: But you're the one who called it life-changing in the first place!

RL: Oh. Right. I did say that.

LBoS: Moving on to our next question: What bone would you most prefer to break?

RL: Hmmm... Difficult question. [*pause*] Before I answer: Are you going to break whatever bone I give as my answer?

LBoS: No, not at all! This is a friendly interview. Just for fun.

RL: Okay. In that case I'd have to say one of the bones in your inner ear. They're small and just kind of floating there, so even though it might mess with your hearing in one ear, it hopefully wouldn't hurt too much or be too disruptive. [*brief pause*] You know, those used to be part of our jaws. Back when we were fish.

LBoS, to the camera: Wow, we have a real encyclopedia with us tonight! [to Rune] Last question: How many toes would you like to have?

RL: I would like to keep the exact same number of toes I have right now, which is ten. They're rather essential in my line of work.

LBoS: In that case, wouldn't you rather have more toes?

RL: No, because that would require an adjustment period, and I'd prefer not to have stop working.

Zina: What? No. But the host makes a good point. Extra toes sounds useful!

The Calling of The Warrior: By K.D.

We all have a tale to tell of our own story, our life is bound between the spirits who guide us and those who follow us into battle.

But we are asked what we are fighting for in this journey. The Tale of each warrior fighting has changed over centuries. Many warriors come from different communities along with different purposes.

My journey has been found in this life and from the past life I lived. I am searching for the answers of how to use my warrior soul to fight for something.

However in recent readings I've done my message has become clear. My warrior is fighting for something more than the average battle drawn with swords and shields. My support comes from a long line of misunderstood ancestors who were silenced into not using their gifts or be exiled out of their loved ones lives.

What am I fighting for? I am fighting to seek the truth, to set others free from false identities, false impressions, and false implications that others pursue to make life a battle that doesn't need to be fought.

I dream of myself while I'm writing this tale of myself standing on the edge of a mountain looking over the village I once led, my visions, my dreams, my prayers answered to become a reality. My gift by the spirits of our universe is to see things clear with clarity, the eye of the seer is what is fortold in my tale.

Reclaiming what is lost is now found; my fire inside of my soul carries the wounds that others have inflicted with their own swords of words that they carved into my flesh. My mortal body is no longer weak, now forged in fire stronger than before.. The pain becomes a way for me to fight the battle for truth shall set everyone free and the false ones shall fall.

What I see is the journey of a new era burning inside of my soul, ready to take on what is next. In the next battle I am prepared for, my purpose is to lead others to freedom from the ones who are false. The ones who dare to spread their lies of hatred amongst the gossiping ghosts who dare to walk between the land of the living and the land of the dead.

But the seer inside of me sees everything happening, I know what is going on but I don't dare to respond because my plan is to keep going, keep thriving, never give up on the warrior path.

Some may say.. "You're not a warrior; you're nothing but a liar, a false seer burned to be put to death on the pike." But no one knows my journey; no one knows what I tell of my trip. No one knows until the ones who ask seek clarity. Clarity reveals everything, where one no longer doubts their gifts to help others. Clarity has given me a reason to believe there is something still worth fighting for.

I was burned for the false idols of this world to be powerful. While I fell into the flames of ash, I rose like the Phoenix does. As a rebirth approaches, my soul thrives on the fire built inside of me. My rebirth is the way to reclaim my voice along with others' voices, to no longer hide in the shadows to please the false ones. My voice will boom like thunder and strike like lightning, just like Thor does with his hammer.

So you ask me what am I fighting for? Well, only you will find out because something is coming, something greater, where the false idols of this world will be burned for what has been said and done. The truth of my journey will set me free and others persecuted for standing behind me. There will be no revenge, no hatred in this battle; there will be only the truth. The truth of what you have said is false for everyone to see that your words are nothing compared to what is to come.

So now I draw my sword, prepared for what is to come next. Are you willing to die by the strength of my blade? Or are you willing to submit on your knees, begging for forgiveness of the false words you spread? Do you believe you need forgiveness from the ones you've hurt? The ones you lied about being false? The ones who want justice shall get justice by my own power. You can either live by the karma you give by being false or live to be some kind of warrior. However, today and into the future, you will see what I have become because this is only the start, and what is to finish is up to you to decide.

You decide what to do next; therefore, don't be surprised what will happen when the blade of my sword cuts you deep into your soul that you beg for mercy because judgment will be served by the justice of my blade, my words, the fire burning inside of me. I am the warrior of truth...

Of course I am talking about the species in general, so a ton of generalizations

So. They are mostly modeled after eels n morays, with a sprinkle of reptile and amphibian.

From the general to specific stuff, they are long. Usually over two meters long, with well-pronounced chest muscles and a thick tail. Their very notable trait is that they have two pairs of arms and no legs. The upper pair of arms is human-like, with a bit duller and shorter claws in place of fingernails. The lower pair of arms is shorter and stronger, the hands equipped with talons that replace the last phalanx.

They often have a thick neck that houses their throat, muscles that support the long tongue and the whole structure of pharyngeal jaws. Their outer jaw has long, thin and very sharp teeth, think thicker than an anglerfish but thinner than human. The inner, pharyngeal jaw has a more human set, with bigger, flat molars and more defined, sharper canines. I am not decided on the colour of the tongue (and the colour of genitals, for that matter). The inner jaw "snaps forward" both as a reflex of touching the upper palate and when the nane wills so, they have control over the muscles.

Their mouth is fun too. When they turn from human to monster, their mouth is fused up. The skin in the place is very coarse and structured and it functions kind of like dead skin - they have to tear it up to open their mouth. Usually nane have something resembling gills below their second set of arms, but they have degenerated in royal nane. As such, royal nane have to open up their mouth to breathe. The skin doesnt patch itself up until they turn back into a human. They can kind of close their mouth when it's torn, but like.... not fully. Fun fact, their smell sharpens a bit when they tear up their mouth

Their eyes have a second eyelid, a horizontal and transparent one. They dont have outer ears, with just holes in the place. They have a dragon-y nose, which I forgot to include in the drawings zlndks.

Their skin doesn't have fur, hair or scales, They are covered in a layer of slime, mucus, just enough to make the skin wet but not enough to make them drip with it. On their arms and on the tail there are multiple small indentations, making the skin somewhat coarse. These are spells written out in szekhteko, allowing them to levitate and swim through air.

To be able to do this a nane has to reach and tap into "magic" and thread it through the letters, somewhat activating them. Because it's required to effectively move around in their monstrous form, many nane are at least proficient in using magic. The stereotype is that it's because they are naturally better magic-users, but that's not true, they are just required to do it, forcing them to hone the skills. In reality there is no difference in a median nane and a median szekh' in terms of talent of natural affinity for magic. (The spells on their skins are borrowing power from Jauisz, god of Magic, Ysyl, god of the Unknown and the Different, Cseni, god of Silence and Stillness and Talyaszh, god of Fate and Destiny. The writing on their skin is not all spells, it can contain crucial information about them, random words, basically anything. The reason for each god: Jauisz because invoking yr is necessary for most of spells. Ysyl because the ability to swim in air is unnatural and somewhat "creepy" to normal szekh. It's kind of unsettling to see. Cseni, even though she is younger than Talyaszh, is considered the god-patron of nane overall, with some nane calling themselves "csener". It is found that nane are completely quiet, as before they tear their skin their breath cannot be even heard. Their body has almost no odour. Swimming in air produces no noise. So yeah Cseni is very close to them. Talyaszh is a nane god, which means xyr monstrous form anatomically fits the nane build (there are 6 nane gods out of the 28). As such, Talyaszh is considered another god that is inherently a patron of all nane.

There are some differences between common and "royal" or "noble" nane. The second set belong to families that have been rigorously picking off marriage candidates for the bloodline, cultivating traits they deem desirable and weeding off traits they don't want. Normal nane dont often have them or have a vestigial version of pseudo-ribbons. Pseudo-ribbons used to be, a few evolutionary steps back, normal ribbons, but, with time, nane wouldn't use them offensively/defensively like other szekh. This caused the growing fragility of them connected to softening. Now they are usually, if they are even present, paper-thin. They are often coloured.

Nane's skin can have a very different range of colours. From ivory (Common) through greys (C) to black (C), from ginger (Uncommon) to brown (U), from pink (Rare) to crimson (U), from dirty yellow (U) to orange (U). They can be dark green, but that is extremely rare. They can be multi-coloured, with patterns or random splotches. With age the pigment dies down, causing fading of the colours. Often pseudo-ribbons are the lightest, their colour depending on the coloration of the main body.

Another royal drawn completely with no reference as to how muscles should work, just freestyle vibing 3. Me drawing a whole nane just to get an excuse to draw nane dick <3 in the process making up a heavily tatooed royal nane whose also a Marked of god of wealth, indulgence and addiction.

What is fun that they have 3 different kinds of pseudo-ribbons. In the order, jerky ribbons, which remind plates of crumpled up, ripped at the edges cloth. The second has a plain monoribbon, resembling a singluar, plain, fused fin. The final one has a leafy pseudoribbon structure, with a few long strands from which smaller, leaf-like forms grow out of. There can be other pseudoribbons structures and they mostly depend on genetics.
