:) pretty much done with the beginner-intermediate course on Russianforfree revising it now and starting to look at cases......... I do really like their courses it was well built up i could follow it, it felt easy but for sure built up enough basics that I can follow easy content!! I would also recommend looking not only at the classes but also the vocab lists? Esp! Numbers!! There's always. Numbers. I hate numbers but they are sadly important. I also found putting it all into Anki very helpful not just my pretty notebook.
Also extremely helpful? comprehensible Russian podcast! Which is also an amazingly well built resource he's really really good at making it super easy to follow and understand while still being interesting??? I find the podcast easier than the YouTube including the YouTube labeled as A2. But idk whatever is your preference!
Idk if these would have helped as much without like help from Em whenever I have literally any silly question⁉️ and also with the listening content. And with the little drawings 🥺 so I'm very privileged 💜 yay 🥰
but like idk feeling good about myself reaching this far in a little over two months!!! So much joy!!🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦

guys russian words are just. so satisfying to say sometimes. Part of why I love this language, you get some words that take a full minute to figure out how to pronounce and then some that just sound so fun.
Like мышь (muish - mouse). мышь. мышь. it's so fun. do y'all have any favorite words?

It's been so interesting to live with and be close to a Jew who was born in Ukraine and fled to the US as a refugee with her parents when she was quite young. She mostly grew up here so is also effectively a native English speaker, but her first language is Russian and she spoke Russian with them her whole life. It's an important facet of who she is and the household she wants to build together and I love her dearly, so now I'm learning Russian. I have to say that learning Russian, Slavic cultures and histories, Russian-language literature, folklore, and folk songs, and engaging with Soviet-era films/shows was not a direction I anticipated my life going in and the irony of doing so specifically for a beloved Ukrainian Jew does not escape me. But hey! Life is weird and nuanced.
Anyway, it's been fascinating to learn about these things from her perspective and to listen to her speak. It's honestly a really beautiful language to listen to?? especially stories and poems. On the other hand, it has been a project trying to train my ear to hear the difference between т and ть, ш and щ, and и vs. ий 😭 Someday I will be able to satisfactorily pronounce ы lol.

Guess who worked out a routine/ACTUAL study plan
As much as I love just listening to Disney songs in my target language, it wasn't doing much for actually learning.
I've also added two new target languages??? I know, I can't believe it either! Anyway, here's my current plan that's been working fairly well.
I aim to hit 7 areas in each language every day: Consume media, listen to speech, Read while listening, Speak, write, study and review.
The idea is to touch each item every day, not spend forever on it. Build consistency first and then spend more time on it if you want to.
An Example from my journal today:
(Italian)
Consume: Listened to Disney songs on the way to work (Resource: Spotify)
Listen: Italian pod 101 unit 1 listening videos (about 7 minutes total) (Resource: Youtube)
Read: Lingo Mastery Read along video, Elena and Catalina (Resource: Youtube)
Speak: Busuu Community challenges - counting lemons and talking about family (Resource: Busuu)
Write: One sentence in my planner. Buongiorno. Io sono cosi-cosi. (Resource: pen and paper)
Study: Chapter 4/A1 on Busuu: Pronouns, the verb "to be", talking about people. (Resource: Busuu)
Review: Busuu flashcards: formal and informal greetings (Resource: Busuu, Anki Droid flashcard system)
I also just installed Language Reactor! I can't believe I ignored it for so long. I like that it searches for shows in your target language for you, especially on Netflix who seem to randomly take Russian dubs down. I also like the customizeable color coding for words you know, words you want to know, and words that you probably don't need to learn right now based on your current skill level and how relevant the word tends to be in real life. It even has an auto-pause feature that will wait after each line so you can replay it or assign categories to words if you want.

Russian word of the day: Лапша
Tumblr media
Лапша́ - inanimate noun, first declension, feminine
Root лапш
Ending а
Plural form: лапши́ (that a stressed и, not a й)
It means noodles
There's a saying "вешать лапшу на уши" which literally translates to "to hang noodles on someone's ears" and means to lie, to deceive

does anyone have language learning thoughts on russian. english is my first language and it was not too difficult for me to pick up some spanish in school (despite my inability to roll rrs and the fact that i am also forgetting the language lol), chinese is challenging for me in the writing system mostly (and some of the phonemes that i didnt learn as a kid) but i dont mind the lack of declination/conjugation lol, but it seems like there's a whole lot of cases and stuff in russian...

I was scrolling r/russian and found a comment recommending a workbook series called, “Russian Through Propaganda.” I went ahead and bought the first book because even though I have been learning Russian for two years I have severely neglected any formal grammar instruction (beyond the amazing fantastic little app “Learn Russian Cases,” which I also highly recommend)
Anyways it came in the mail last week and I got right to work on the lessons. I have to say it is an AMAZING resource which is totally exceeding my expectations. Even though the lessons so far have been pretty basic (gender, expressing possession, etc) they are written super clearly and are just awesome practice! Plus each page has a cool piece of Soviet propaganda on it to illustrate the grammatical principal, so you are getting a bit of history and cultural context as well. Definitely a great purchase, especially if you are just starting out. I guess there are 4 workbooks in the series also, so there is a huge amount of learning to be had!

Добрый люди!!
Мне нужно ваше помощь! Я родилась в России но живу в Америке и я теряю русский язык. Я не знаю если я когда-то смогу вернуться в Россию ну я ни хочу забыть свою родину.
Пожалуйста помогите мне найти с кем то я могу переписываться и разобраться на русском языке. Это было бы просто супер!
Спасибо!
My good people!!!
I require some assistance. I was born in Russia, but live in America and I can feel my ability to speak Russian slipping away. I don't know if I'll ever be able to go back to my country, but I don't want to forget it either.
If y'all can please help me find someone to help me practice my Russian that would be absolutely amazing.
Thank ye!

last time I posted in here was more than a year ago, and palpably hopeless, so as you can imagine there's much to tell
I ended up taking a gap year to process everything, which has helped me clarify my goals and intentions,
not long after that last post, I landed my first proper job in law and have managed to switch to my second job during this timeframe!
I've developed a tremendous interest in Intellectual Property Law and did a couple of internships too, which led me to long-time collaborations and connections I couldn't even imagine,
my social skills have improved so so much as a direct result of putting myself out there, which I'm sure a lot of you know how much of a big accomplishment is,
I'm currently in my last year of uni, preparing to write my thesis on the EU AI Act, think it'll be fun to monitor everything going on here again.
if you feel the same way I did about life and studies a while ago, know that things definitely get better as you move forward :)
