Unlocking the Power of SAP Analytics Cloud: A Comprehensive Guide
In the rapidly evolving business landscape, the need for data-driven decisions has never been more important. Companies must use tools that not only allow them to analyze their data but also to draw valuable insights from it to steer their strategies effectively. One such tool that has revolutionized data analytics is SAP Analytics Cloud. This cloud-based platform combines various analytical functionalities to help businesses transform data into actionable insights. This article dives into SAP Analytics Cloud, its features, benefits, and how it drives smarter decision-making.
What is SAP Analytics Cloud?
SAP Analytics Cloud (SAC) is a comprehensive, cloud-based platform that integrates business intelligence, planning, and predictive analytics into one unified solution. It allows organizations to analyze data in real-time, forecast future trends, and collaborate more effectively within teams. By providing a consolidated environment for business intelligence (BI), predictive analytics, and financial planning, SAC is designed to meet the needs of businesses striving to make informed, data-driven decisions.
SAP Analytics Cloud also offers the advantage of scalability and flexibility, as it can cater to both small businesses and large enterprises. It is designed to help organizations turn raw data into actionable insights that can fuel decision-making at every level of the business.
Key Features of SAP Analytics Cloud
1. Business Intelligence (BI)
Business Intelligence (BI) is the foundation of SAP Analytics Cloud, allowing organizations to access real-time data and transform it into meaningful reports. The BI capabilities in SAC allow users to generate interactive dashboards, perform ad-hoc analysis, and create customized reports. With drag-and-drop functionality, even those without deep technical knowledge can easily build powerful reports and visualizations.
2. Predictive Analytics
One of the most powerful aspects of SAP Analytics Cloud is its predictive analytics capabilities. By utilizing machine learning and advanced algorithms, SAC enables users to forecast future trends, identify patterns in historical data, and make predictions that guide strategic decision-making. This is especially valuable for businesses looking to understand future market conditions, customer behavior, or potential risks.
3. Planning and Budgeting
Planning and budgeting capabilities within SAC allow businesses to streamline financial planning processes. Companies can set up budgeting models, track performance against set targets, and adjust plans based on real-time data. SAC makes it easier to monitor and adjust financial forecasts, which can be critical in dynamic business environments where conditions change frequently.
4. Collaboration Tools
SAP Analytics Cloud integrates collaboration features, making it easier for teams to work together in real-time. Users can leave comments on reports, share insights with colleagues, and collaborate on decision-making. This integration ensures that decision-makers across different departments are aligned and have access to the same data, which leads to more informed and coordinated decisions.
5. Data Connectivity
SAC offers robust data connectivity options, allowing users to connect to a wide variety of data sources. Whether it's SAP systems, third-party applications, or cloud databases, SAC supports seamless integration, enabling businesses to gather data from multiple channels and have it available in one place. The platform ensures that all stakeholders work from the same data set, ensuring consistency and accuracy across reports.
6. Data Visualization
Data visualization in SAP Analytics Cloud allows businesses to create intuitive and engaging visuals. The platform offers a range of visualization options such as charts, graphs, and heat maps to help users communicate complex data more effectively. Whether presenting to management, stakeholders, or customers, data visualization makes insights more accessible and easier to understand.
Why Businesses Should Adopt SAP Analytics Cloud
1. Enhanced Decision-Making
SAP Analytics Cloud empowers decision-makers with accurate, real-time insights that support better business decisions. The predictive capabilities provide foresight into future trends, helping businesses plan ahead rather than react to events. With SAC, leaders have the information they need to make strategic choices that drive the success of the organization.
2. Cost-Effective
By moving to the cloud, businesses can eliminate the need for expensive on-premise infrastructure and maintenance. The cloud model of SAP Analytics Cloud offers a subscription-based pricing structure, allowing companies to scale according to their needs. This ensures that businesses only pay for the services and resources they use, making it a cost-effective solution for organizations of all sizes.
3. Real-Time Data Analysis
In today’s fast-paced world, real-time data is crucial for staying competitive. SAP Analytics Cloud provides the tools necessary to analyze data as it happens, allowing businesses to make quick decisions and respond to changes swiftly. Whether it's adjusting a marketing strategy or pivoting operations, SAC ensures businesses remain agile in a dynamic environment.
4. Improved Collaboration Across Teams
The collaborative features of SAP Analytics Cloud ensure that teams across different departments can work together on data-driven projects. With shared insights, team members can align their efforts, ensuring that all decision-makers have access to the same real-time data. This streamlines communication and improves overall team performance.
5. Scalability and Flexibility
Whether your business is small and just starting or a large enterprise, SAP Analytics Cloud scales according to your requirements. The platform is flexible enough to handle growing data needs, new users, and expanding business requirements. This scalability ensures that SAC remains a valuable asset as your company evolves.
How SAP Analytics Cloud Improves Strategic Planning
Strategic planning is a critical component of business success. SAP Analytics Cloud improves strategic planning in several ways:
1. Data-Driven Forecasting
The predictive analytics features in SAC allow businesses to model different scenarios and forecast future outcomes. Companies can assess various “what-if” scenarios and understand the potential impact of different decisions. This empowers organizations to make more informed, proactive decisions that align with long-term objectives.
2. Scenario Planning
Scenario planning in SAP Analytics Cloud helps businesses prepare for different eventualities by modeling multiple possible outcomes. By considering a range of scenarios, businesses can anticipate challenges, optimize resources, and ensure they are well-prepared for future disruptions. This capability helps organizations reduce uncertainty and make informed, strategic choices.
3. Streamlined Budgeting and Financial Planning
With SAP Analytics Cloud, businesses can establish financial goals and monitor progress in real-time. The budgeting feature helps companies set up accurate financial models, track performance, and adjust as needed. Whether for operational costs, revenue targets, or capital expenditure, SAC ensures financial plans are aligned with real-world data and strategic objectives.
SAP Analytics Cloud vs. Traditional Analytics Tools
1. Cloud-Based Solution
Unlike traditional on-premise analytics tools, SAP Analytics Cloud operates entirely in the cloud. This offers several advantages, including automatic updates, greater flexibility, and lower maintenance costs. Businesses no longer need to worry about server management, hardware maintenance, or software updates — everything is handled by the cloud.
2. Unified Platform
Traditional analytics tools often require businesses to use separate systems for business intelligence, planning, and forecasting. SAP Analytics Cloud integrates all these functionalities into one platform, providing a seamless user experience. This unification makes it easier to gather insights from different areas of the business and ensures consistency across reports.
3. Advanced Analytics Features
SAP Analytics Cloud offers advanced features, such as predictive analytics and machine learning, which traditional tools may lack. These features provide deeper insights into data, enabling businesses to make more accurate forecasts and identify emerging trends.
Getting Started with SAP Analytics Cloud
If you're considering adopting SAP Analytics Cloud, here are the essential steps to get started:
1. Identify Your Business Needs
Assess the specific analytics needs of your organization. What types of data do you need to analyze? What are your key goals for using SAC? Having a clear understanding of your requirements will help ensure that SAC is implemented in a way that benefits your business.
2. Select a Plan That Fits Your Business
SAP offers various pricing models and plans for SAC, depending on the size of your business and your specific requirements. Choose the plan that best suits your needs and budget.
3. Integrate Data Sources
SAP Analytics Cloud allows integration with various data sources. Begin by connecting your systems, databases, and third-party applications to the platform. This ensures that all relevant data is available in one central location for analysis.

I still think it's really cool how Amuro starts as the shittiest pilot alive (because he's a 15-year old) that only gets carried because he's in the biggest, fattest stat stick in-universe at the time (a few retroactive additions made in the future notwithstanding), enough that even its crappy vulcan guns are tearing Zaku IIs apart, and when he starts getting a bit too cocky, Char and Ramba Ral show up in objectively inferior pieces of junk and absolutely deliver his pizza, they just drag his face across every available surface in Planet Earth like he's a Yakuza mook, all because they are simply that much better at piloting, and the thing is, Amuro takes that very seriously.
He goes from shitass kid in an unfortunate situation that doesn't want to get in the robot to the most unwell child soldier in the war, which is really saying something, but most importantly, becomes so good at piloting the Gundam that the Gundam physically cannot handle Amuro's piloting. They need to apply "Magnetic Coating" to its joints so they don't fucking snap away from the main frame because Amuro, one, moves too damn well but also in too extreme a way for the frame to handle it, two, despite being equipped with two sabers, a shield, a beam rifle and vulcan guns, Amuro is a stern believer in introducing most everyone in thagomizer range to his Rated Z for Zeon hands, the single most official pair of hands in the business, tax free. He KEEP going Ip Man on these dudes, he does NOT need to do a Jamestown on these mother fuckers but he INSISTS. Somehow even the Gundam Hammer, which is a giant Hannah Barbera cartoon flail-- Ok, look at this thing, words do not do it justice
Even this god damn Tom and Jerry prop is less savage that whatever Amuro decides to do the moment he's done throwing his shield to get a free kill on someone and it officially becomes bed time forever for the unfortunate sap at the business end of his ten-finger weapons of mass destruction.
The RX-78-2, "Gundam" for its friends and family, even has a top of the line cutting edge Learning Computer that 'learns' alongside the pilot and their habits. This data extracted from it was so absolutely fucked up that it completely revolutionized Mobile Suit combat afterwards, which is a wholesome thing to think about when The Best Combat Data Ever came from a really angry, really stressed 15 year old that doesn't even like piloting. He was 15! He made Haro with his own hands! Amuro literally just wanted to make funny cute spherical robofriends! Amuro was out there trying to make Kirby real, but fate had other plans for him. His cloned brain put in a pilot seat is one of the setting's strongest 'pilots'.
They made fucking Shadow the Hedgehog with his brain, god damn.
By the end, Zeon is rolling out Gelgoogs out of its mass production lines. These things are in the Gundam's ballpark in terms of overall specs (or "power level"). Amuro is bodying them as if they were episode 1 Zaku IIs.
AND THEN HE GETS FUCKING PSYCHIC SPACE POWERS. Not that he needed them, he bodied a couple Space Psychics without any of those powers before awakening to them. But heaven's most violent child was not done evolving, whether he liked it or not.
Char bodied him in a souped up Zaku II at the start, a machine objectively inferior to the Gundam. Amuro more or less one-sidedly beats the shit out of Char when he's in a custom Commander-type Gelgoog that you could consider to be equal spec-wise to the Gundam. Amuro is the embodiment of Finding Out. He is Consequences. You tell him he better make it hurt, better make it count, better kill you in one shot, buddy, he needs half a fucking shot. The complete transformation. One could consider the central 75% of the show as long drawn out training montage turning a kid into the Geese Howard of giant robots.

hi !! saw requests for song fics are open, may I request something angsty with fem!human!reader x megatron (idw) to ‘young and beautiful’ by lana del rey ? 🥹 <3 thank you in advancee
Young and Beautiful (IDW Megatron x Fem!Human!reader)
Word count: 1,070
Eighty years. Humans lived for a measly eighty years.
You change right before Megatron’s optics. Your hair grays, your skin sags, your bones grow thinner. Like the very universe was sapping you away from him. Vector Prime alone could grant him all the time he needed to write a poem about all of the moments he lived with you.
But how could he begin to write when every time he picked up his stylus, you were that much further from him? He longed to capture the feeling of you and immortalize it in a data pad, but then you’d touch your tiny, soft servo along his gray bottom lip plate and take him away. Remind him that you were his moment. Here for a second, gone in a blink.
You flare, you flicker, you fade.
You asked him once, if he’d love you even after you weren’t so soft. You weren’t so pretty. And your mind wasn’t as intact as it once was.
Megatron’s answer was immediate.
“Even once the spark of your life extinguishes, and I won’t stop even for a klik after.”
You may have lamented the way time and age changed you, but Megatron learns to see unique beauty in it. There was something beautiful in a life lived so long that you COULD age, it was a promise of peace and resilience. You lived, you fought, you came back again and again. A force so strong that it took time itself to put you down.
Megatron thought that was romantic. Not in the way of kisses in summer or dancing in the moonlight, but the cosmic way. In the way that atoms and space dust collect together and become new stars, or how he realizes, in the grand scheme of things, so, so many tiny and nearly impossible things had to happen for you to be his.
As you grew older, you grew more rapt by his poetry. You blamed it on growing old and sentimental, he argued you were always sentimental. You had always found it fascinating, but Megatron believed that perhaps you took some comfort in it.
“Do you think, because I love you… I’ll be there in the Afterspark waiting for you?”
You were resting against his neck cables, curled up between his shoulder armor and helm vents like a tiny glitch mouse. The ardent heat of energon pulsing up the lines of his throat felt good and helped soothe some of the arthritis in your hands. He had to rest his chin on his servo, propping his helm up at an angle to keep from squishing you, but he hadn’t the spark to stop you.
It’s a question that he’d pondered many times. For he who often pondered the nature of all things grand, the question of life after death was a philosophist’s energon and mineral tablets.
“You do not have a spark,” He points out, shifting his helm minutely to a position slightly more comfortable for you to tuck yourself under, “So I would not expect you to be held to the same rules and expectations of Primus.”
“But, your God is real.” You raise as a counterpoint, “Any proof that various human gods are real could be considered dubious at best.”
“That is a point for the high queries of gods, but what of your lack-there-of spark?”
“What is a spark but life?” You offer, gesturing with your hands and making the round shape of a spark before your breast. Megatron loathed to move you from your warm perch, so instead he tips the data pad in his servo so he can see your tiny reflection. You look comfortable, hidden securely in his collar fairings. “Perhaps I DO have a spark, but it’s simply just a different form. After all, energy cannot be destroyed. It merely changes form.”
You chuckle, knocking your knuckles against his neck cables. “Julius Robert Mayer.”
“A human philosopher?” Megatron asks, setting his datapad aside to instead settle for reaching up and touching his digit to your lap. You take the hint immediately, and hold his huge digit between your two itty bitty hands.
“Founder of the laws of energy conservation. Suppose most of us are philosophers in some way, though.”
You have to be, with lives so short and bright. Megatron keeps that thought private to himself, gently rubbing his thumb against the back of your hand. You were feeling thinner and thinner these days. He hoped you ate well enough.
“So, what have we come to the conclusion of in this conversation?” You prompt, bringing back your point, “That there is no true way to say I do not have a spark, and that it’s ultimately far more likely that Primus and his Afterspark wait for me than say… The Christian or Hebrew concept of God.”
“For there are too many to count.”
“For there are too many to count.” You agree, “But it is the most commonly applicable and the most similar to Primus.”
“But,” Megatron clicks his glossa, a smile coming to his face. He loved it so when he could have these in-depth conversations with you. “That is also dismissing that humanity is a much younger culture than Cybertron was. Perhaps you will find proof that these things are indeed true, or perhaps something you had not even considered. Perhaps in the afterlife, you will have a veritable plethora of ‘heavens’ to choose from.”
“Then I’d choose to wait for you.” You say, “Or I’d choose some religion where I’d be reborn and I could fall in love with you again.”
“You could live again, redo all of the things you had missed. Unmake all of your mistakes.”
“You talk as if I considered you a mistake.”
He feels your tiny, cool lips press to the pulsing line of energon that is connected directly to his spark chamber. You laugh, giddy and sounding just as young as you were when he first met you. There’s a well of emotion there in his chest and, if not for millions of years of carefully cultivated control, he might have sobbed.
Instead, he settles for curling the whole of his huge, warm servo against your body, and recording this moment for all of time. The moment he writes on his spark that you wanted to be his in any life.
“I suppose it is not a mistake then, if you do not regret it.”

101 Days into Trump 2.0, we're halfway to recession
A recession is regarded as two consecutive quarters of shrinking real GDP. In other words, a decline in GDP for a total of six months.
Thanks to Trump's tariffs, trade wars, and mass firings, the size of the American economy is now shrinking. If this continues through the end of June, we will officially be in recession.
U.S. recession risk leaps as GDP shrinks for the first time since 2022
President Donald Trump's trade policies could be setting up the U.S. economy for its first recession since the Covid crisis of 2020. The U.S. economy contracted sharply in the first quarter, according to an early Commerce Department estimate published Wednesday, as the impact of tariffs triggered a record surge in imports and slowed domestic spending. First-quarter GDP was pegged at -0.3%, down from the positive 2.4% pace recorded over the final three months of last year and well shy of Wall Street's forecast for an advance of around 0.4%. The contraction marks the first time the economy has shrunk since the first quarter of 2022. Overall consumption slowed to 1.2% from 2.7% over the final months of last year, the data indicated. Government spending contracted 0.25% following a rise of 0.52% over Q4 2024
We had one quarter of post-COVID negative growth in early 2022 but the economy rebounded during the second quarter which prevented recession. Since then, the US economy had been in growth.
In the last quarter of 2024, when Biden was still president, the US economy grew at a healthy 2.4%. Then Trump came back.

Republicans have caused 10 of the last 11 recessions. Trump is eager to make that 11 of the last 12.
Somehow, Republicans have been remarkably successful at convincing a lot of saps that the GOP is good for the economy. In fact, they help only the filthy rich.
What we are going through right now is TOTALLY intentional on Trump's part. It is part of his effort to undermine America.
You need to repeat at every convenient opportunity in real life that Republicans suck for the economy. If you don't get hoarse from saying that, you're not repeating it enough.

Oooh I got pretty far in this draft! I was heavily inspired by Snow Crash. I like this one too I just have no idea what the actual plot was going to be.
Chapter 1
V looked over at the sleeping girl in his bed. He didn't know her name, and he didn't care. He got up, careful not to disturb her, and went to his living room. He and his chooms went clubbing last night and brought girls back to his penthouse. They all lay strewn across the couches like ragdolls, fast asleep. Empty liquor bottles, designer drug inhalers, and mysterious powders littered nearly every surface.
He was bored. Money didn't buy happiness. It bought stability. But stability gets boring, so it buys excess. Then excess gets boring.
He checked the time on his phone. He had to talk to an Arasaka hedge fund manager about a gig today.
He scrawled a note and left it on the table for his guests, "Got a gig. Clean up and get the fuck out."
He put on his black, slim fit, neo-militarist suit and packed his black netrunning suit in his briefcase. He called his purple Outlaw GTS to meet him outside the megabuilding. He wasn't quite rich enough for an Aerondight.
They met at the cafe inside Konpecki Plaza. It was filled with corpos taking their lunch break. V was hungry but he worked best on an empty stomach. He tried to limit background bodily function to max out as much power as he could from his brain. The manager was short and mousy, he wore a vintage brown houndstooth blazer. The man spoke fast and frantically, "The guy, Craig, he's gunning for my spot. I need you to get into his system and steal these financial models he's been working on."
V nodded and sipped his coffee.
"Transfer them to me and pray I get the promotion or I'm dead meat," he continued.
"Done. You got a chair for me?" V said.
"Yes, I got one set up in my private office."
"Show me."
The client's office was on the 30th floor and they rode the elevator in silence. They got to a door with the name "David Goddard" displayed on the door. David scanned his optics and the door opened.
It was a single room, modest in size. A real wood desk in the center. In the corner was a netrunner chair. V scanned it with his Kiroshi cybereyes to make sure it had the requisite features. A cooling unit was especially key. It fed coolant through the tubes in the netrunner suit keeping the brain and body from overheating.
V ushered David out of the room and got changed. He slotted an empty shard into his chip port. He studded into the chair, his wrist plug connected to one arm rest and used his free hand to connect the chair directly to his neuralsocket. He closed his eyes, took in a deep breath, and dropped into the net. The first drop always made him queasy. The white static was overwhelming. It all turned to black and he felt his feet hit the ground. Shoshana stood in front of him. "Hello Vincent, how are you today?"
"I'm doing well, thank you Shoshana." She was the personality construct he developed to assist him in the net interface he custom built. She was the only fleshed out construct in the interface. She had long brown hair and wore a tight red neo-kitsch dress and red pumps. The interface itself was simple black and red. The red looked like stars out in the space but would come together to form structures as V needed.
"What are we doing today, Vincent?"
"The usual corporate espionage."
"I'll prepare the data and code walls." V prepped his ICE breaker programs and cracked his virtual knuckles.
"All set. You're free to go," Shoshana said.
V navigated the Arasaka subnet, peeking into comps and brains until he found the system he needed. He didn't need the ICE breaker at all, gonk didn't protect his files. Poor sap was just asking to be cyberpirated.
V waltzed right through the door and began a search for the data. There was so much junk data. Disorganized reports, scraps of meeting notes. He called up the autofiler, it displayed as a wireframe filing cabinet, and put it to work sorting through everything. It was taking too long. He called Shoshana over for help. She automatically adjusted his power output and priority connection to help the search run faster.
A ding echoed from the autofiler. Bingo. V pulled the file out of the virtual cabinet, wrote the data on the blank shard and destroyed the original copy. He dismissed the autofiler with a wave of his hand. Before jacking out he created a partition in his neuralnet to hide the data copy he kept. He always signed shards with a blank memory bank signature to prove it was empty. Of course that was a lie. Information was a currency in Night City and especially in the corpo world.
He jacked out, changed back into his suit and walked out of the office. He tossed the shard case to David, "There you go. Deleted all copies. Anything else?"
David slotted in the shard to check the data and memory bank signature to confirm it was blank. "You just saved my life and career!" David shouted and transferred the eddies.
When V got home he saw his house was tidied and everyone had left. He took off his suit jacket and shoes and flopped onto the couch. His hairless cat Nibbles jumped into his lap and began purring and kneading his legs. When he closed his eyes he was suddenly hit with a pounding headache and leaned forward, grabbing his head. This had been happening more frequently lately. He needed a cyberdeck upgrade and his neurosocket deep cleaned.
When the headache passed he lay down on the couch and turned on the TV. He dozed for a bit, the repetitive AdTV clips like the chorus of a lullaby.
He woke abruptly when Militech solos kicked down his door, surrounded him and pointed their guns at him. He put his hands up and stayed still. A blonde woman in a tight black pantsuit strode in next and looked around his penthouse.
"Well, no accounting for taste I suppose," she had a commanding voice. She walked over to where V lay and sat on the edge of the couch. "We know what you have locked away in that pretty little head of yours and we want it. We're going to take it." She stroked his face, "Mm, you really are pretty."
One of the soldiers stuck a black bag over V's face and smashed his face with the butt of a rifle. V awoke, the world still blackened by the bag and his wrists tied. He heard and felt the tires bumping off road. A few minutes later and the car stopped. Doors opened. He was hauled out and fell to the ground. It was dirt, felt like desert. He figured he must be in the Badlands. A strong hand lifted him up and pushed him to walk forward.
When they got inside the building they pulled the black bag off. They were in a rendition facility. He'd heard horror stories from other 'runners and techies about being interrogated. Most netrunners didn't come back with their brain intact and techies had their hands irreparably damaged. Distant screaming echoed down the hall as they got closer to an ominous black door.
The woman swiped a key card and the door opened, revealing a contour couch. The floor was tiled white with black grout and sloped towards a drain below the contour couch. They shoved V onto the couch and strapped in his arms and legs.
"Give us the data and we'll let you go," the woman said.
"Got no idea what you're talking about lady."
"Don't make this harder than it has to be. We know about the partitions. Tell us everything you know. Every corpo secret you've held onto."
"I'm telling the truth, I really got no ide-"
She stepped away and passed through the guards. She spoke through an intercom by the door but V couldn't make out what she was saying.
Moments later a huge hulking man, his body nearly 75% chrome, stormed into the room. The woman leaned against the wall and folded her arms across her chest.
"Be a good boy, tell us what you know, and we won't have to use ol' Sarge here."
"No," if he gave everything to them he'd lose all his power, all his leverage. Militech would own him for life. V pressed a trigger embedded in the web between his thumb and forefinger signaling the random partitioner to start sealing off the data in a configuration he couldn't guess. Data killswitch.
Sarge pounded one metal fist against the other making a dull metallic thud. He punched V in the stomach and he tried to double over but his shackled wrists didn't let him. Sarge punched him again, this time in his chest and let out a wheezing cough.
"Give us the data."
V shook his head and the killer giant punched him in his face. He felt his nose crack and his lip split.
"Send him to the brink then call in Dr. Katara."
The woman left the room and Sarge grinned at V. His teeth were metal points. He whaled on V. A "case instability" error flashed across his vision as he felt his orbital bone break. His head spun, blood obscured his vision, he felt his jaw crack. His face was a near bloody pulp and he was having trouble breathing. All he could inhale was blood and he started choking.
A doctor entered the room and got to work reviving V. In just a few hours he was healed. The woman came back, "Will you tell us now?"
V spat blood at her, "Fuck you."
The beating and revival went on for 2 days. On the third day Sarge was about to punch him in the chest again when V croaked out, "Stop."
The woman signaled a techie who came over to V, jacked a deck into his neurosocket. It took hours for V and the techie to crack the partitions. Shoshana screamed and pounded the visual box she was trapped in.
"Good boy. We have a job for you."
"The fuck makes you think I'm gonna help you?"
"Because we'll pay so fucking much you won't need to work another day in your life."
V narrowed his eyes, anything too good to be true always was. Sarge came and punched V in the face a couple times, hard, knocking V unconscious.
Chapter 2
Bea sat on the bed in her room at the Sunset Hotel working on her laptop. She'd just gotten off a call with her boss, Serena Crawford. They'd be dropping a man off at the motel. She was to install monitoring soft, kill soft, and company protection soft. They'd watch his every move and monitor every biometric. They could tell him who to kill and he would or they'd kill him and he couldn't hurt anyone in the company, including her.
She was writing the programs onto a data shard that would silently install the soft as she reviewed the mission detes. She hated the bitter irony that much of the same software was installed in her brain
She heard Sarge's metal fist banging on the door, followed by a thump and heavy footsteps walking away. She opened the door and saw a man laying there, unconscious. He had a blue mullethawk with a black undercut, black tattoos over his eyes, nose, and under his cheekbones giving an illusion of a skull. He was bloody, swollen and purple. Couldn't they have had Dr. Katara fix him up?
She put her arms under his shoulders and dragged him into the room. He was heavy, she couldn't tell if it was muscle, chrome or both. She shut the door and sat back on the bed, catching her breath. She sent a text to Serena, "Delivered."
Bea continued working on her laptop, writing up a report and action plan for the mission and loaded it onto the shard. She ejected the small chip and placed it in a shard case and set it on the table next to her. She sent an email to her brother from her burner phone. "Big tech coming."
When V finally awoke Bea was dozing sitting up. V groaned and sat up, "Who the-th-oh fuck what happened?"
Bea woke with a start, "Oh jesus don't startle me like that."
V was clutching his head and stomach.
"You're V, right?" V nodded but that made his head throb.
Bea grabbed a fast heal hypo off the bedside table and slammed it into V's shoulder, he grabbed her hand. His metal fingers were cold and his grip tight, he stood up and tackled her to the floor, straddling her. His fist was inches from her face, "Start talking."
Bea put her hands up in surrender, "Relax! I'm Bea, your partner. Militech job, remember?"
V still glared at her, "Do you mind? We've got a job to do." She wanted to get the soft in his head before he hurt her.
V stood up and reached a hand out to help Bea up. She walked over to the bed and motioned for V to sit on the other bed across from it. She slid the shard case across the table to him.
"Detes, slot in."
V slotted the shard in and schematics for the new Arasaka smartgun he'd seen on the street displayed, "Okay? These are a dime a dozen."
"New prototype. Militech wants it. Right now the schematics are housed in a single office inside Konpecki Tower. You've been there, I assume?"
"What's new about this one?"
"Way better crypto key, not easy to crack like the Militech one. We steal the schematics, you're free."
"That's it? Just klep some schematics and go? Easy to get into the plaza, I'm a regular."
Bea saw a small notification on the holoboard projected on her eyes. The soft was installed. "What's your job?" V asked.
"Make sure you get the job done, grab the data, and don't hide it in a partition."
V sighed, of course. "It's getting late, I'll order us some pizza. Clean up. Fresh clothes in the bathroom."
Bea submitted an order on her phone and the pizza was there in 10 minutes. She heard V in the shower. She was eating and continuing her report when V walked out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist. Bea looked up and her jaw dropped, half chewed pizza falling on her laptop.
He was toned, though his arms, pecs and back muscles were well defined to support the gorilla arms implants. He had a tattoo of a snake wrapping around one shoulder and across his chest and back. He had decorative cyberware cutting into the black tattoos on either side of his neck.
V looked at her and she quickly looked away, wiping the pizza off her laptop. "I said clothes are in the bathroom," Bea said and cleared her throat.
"I'm hungry," V grabbed pizza and sat on the bed across from Bea.
It was getting late, they needed sleep. V finally got up and put on boxers and got into bed. Bea set the alarm for 6:30.
She awoke to the industrial sound of PEBKAK radio. Bea got up and put some coffee on. She looked over at V who was on his back and noticed his morning wood. She quickly looked away feeling her cheeks get hot.
V woke up from the clattering of the cups and coffee pot.
"Leftover pizza in the mini fridge. I'm gonna shower," Bea said. She grabbed a change of clothes and walked to the bathroom. The water took less than a minute to get hot and she stepped in. It felt good on her sore back and shoulders. Her brother kept nagging her to get a posture mod, big in the techie world lately with how often they were bent in weird angles working on shit.
She tilted her head back and let the beat of the water drown out her thoughts and anxieties. She heard the door open. It was too steamy for her to see anything.
She saw a shadow get closer to the frosted door and stand there, watching her own silhouette.
"Did you need something?" she asked.
"Threads are in here," V replied. He had a hint of a Philly accent on his vowels and a slight gravel. He was still facing her as he got changed and she finished showering. She turned off the water and he was still standing there. What was this? Intimidation? A power play? Was he just gonkbrained?
"Do you mind?" Bea asked.
"Yes, actually," V replied. The fuck did that mean?
He grabbed a towel off the rack and opened the shower door. He was fully dressed in a new neomilitarist suit that was tailored perfectly. Her nipples got hard in the rush of cold air and she watched V look her up and down, hungrily.
She snatched the towel out of his hand, wrapped it around her and shoved past him to get changed. She was in her bra and panties when V walked out of the bathroom. He was fast and he grabbed her neck and pushed her against the wall. The servos in his modded hand whirred as his grip tightened around her throat and she put her hands up, trying to claw his arm off her neck. The company protection soft kicked in and his hands went limp as a jolt of pain froze the servos in his implant.
He stepped back and looked at his arms. His fingers were contorted, and he felt like his implant was burning.
"Are you alright?" Bea asked.
"Must have got fucked up from my last job more than I thought," V mumbled. Good, he didn't realize it was the sabotage soft.
They locked eyes as V watched her get dressed. She put on black short overalls over a black tank top and strapped her toolkit and belt across her waist and thigh, "Let's go."
They walked down to the van and got in. V looked in the back, "The hell is all this for?" He gestured to the pile of broken guns, mods, and tech taking most of the space.
"Just projects, client stuff," Bea studded into the car to turn it on and began driving back to Night City.
"So, you get kidnapped by Militech too?" V asked, trying to fill the silence. It was about a 20 minute drive and the radio wasn't on.
"Recruited when I was a kid," she flicked her finger against a medal hanging off the rearview mirror, "won a contest for disassembling the most Lexingtons in 3 minutes. They offered my family a contract for more eddies than they'd ever seen in their life."
V whistled, "Could have used you in my crew a couple years ago."
Bea had been given a dossier about him. His best friend Jackie and their netrunner T-Bug were flatlined in a huge heist a couple years ago. V learned netrunning full time and became one of the best info brokers in Night City.
"Where's your family now?" Bea wanted to drive in silence. She hated getting to know the short timers because it made their deaths worse. She had been Serena's pet project since she was a kid, kept secluded and rigorously trained. At 18 they installed the kill soft and corpo protection soft and killed her contract. They killed her family. They never said it was them and she and her brother could never prove it either. But she knew.
"Dead," that shut V up.
Bea pulled into the Dew Drop Motel, an addict hovel ran by 6th Street but 6th Street had also been a main supplier of the cracked Militech guns and new Arasaka guns. "Not doing the job today?" V asked.
"Recon, get some samples," Bea slammed her door shut and V followed her in. She tossed a credchip on the desk and the clerk handed her a key.
They got to the room on the first floor with a window looking out at the back alley. A perfect view of the warehouse 6th Street used.
There was one bed. Shit. V flopped down on the bed and grinned at her. "I'll be right back," Bea said.
She asked the clerk if there were any other empty rooms. There weren't. She sighed and called Serena, "I'm sorry Bea, he's a slippery fuck and I need you to watch him like a hawk."
Be grabbed their gear from the van and walked back to the room. V was laying on the bed with his hands folded behind his head watching TV. A rerun of Watson Whore was blaring and she turned it down. She set the bags down next to the bed and shoved V's legs off to the opposite side and began unloading gear.
She took out the surveillance drone. V got up and opened the blinds and Bea quickly shut them. "Sit down and keep your hands to yourself," Bea snapped.
He sat down at the small desk and literally twiddled his thumbs, they made an obnoxious clinking sound as the metal rolled across metal. She tossed a duffel back at him and it hit him in the head, "Ow, what was that for?"
"Clothes and personal items. I gotta set up surveillance. Behave yourself while I'm gone, yeah?" Bea set a laptop on the desk and walked out. She called V on the holo, "Jack into the laptop to login. I'm setting up a surveillance drone. Let me know when the feeds go live."
"Sure thing boss," V said.
Bea climbed up the fire escape to the roof. She unpacked the drone, checked the battery, enabled optical camo, and set up the sync to the laptop. She gently lifted it into the air, "Getting the drone feed?" She hovered it just over the building.
"Yeah, all clear." She sat cross legged behind an HVAC unit and jacked into the drone carrier to connect to the camera and direct it. She flew it over to the warehouse.
"Oh fuck me, didn't say nothing about 6th Street," V exclaimed.
"What are you scared?"
"Annoyed, they've given me some hella good jobs, don't wanna mess with my rep," V whined.
Bea rolled her eyes and kept moving, she scanned the vehicles and doors, checked security. They had turrets mounted on the roof and at every entrance. The warehouse wasn't large and she saw only about 4 soldiers outside and 6 inside. None of the vans or boxes outside held any guns, just drugs and bootleg threads. She tagged the turrets and cameras and recalled the drone.
She sat listening to the drone of cars and hover AVs overhead, distant gunshots and screaming. She sat and thought about the plan.
They'd go in at night, park the van in the parking lot across the street, and Bea would try to disable the turrets through quickhacking. She might need Shoshana's help though, her Militech Paraline deck was three generations behind and slow as hell. It was most useful for machine and vehicle diagnostics, not hacking. She took some meditative deep breaths before packing up the drone and heading back into the room. She leaned against the wall and folded her arms across her chest, "How fast's your hacking?"
V raised his eyebrows, "Like the speed of light baby, why?"
"I'll need you to take out the turrets so I can go in and klep some of the guns."
"Done, just say when."
Bea hoped she could trust him. The corp protection soft only protected from actual physical attacks or direct combat and control quickhacks. It'd be like shooting fish in a barrel if his timing was right.
She pulled out her burner and texted her brother, "Drop off tonight. The usual."
V did the briefest, undetectable scan of Bea and saw it was a burner, "Why the burner?" He got up and walked over to her, his eyes narrowing.
"Nothing, just project stuff," Bea quickly stuffed the burner inside her pocket.
V walked closer and put one hand against the wall next to her head, "Who were you texting?"
"Does it matter? Got nothing to do with the job," Bea tried to duck under his arm but he took his other hand and slammed her shoulder into the wall, she winced.
"Is shit gonna go sideways?" V asked.
Bea shook her head, she brought her hand up to try to push his arm off her shoulder but he pressed harder and she felt the drywall start to give way behind her shoulder.
"Answer me," he growled.
"I don't owe you answers. Let me go," Bea said. She went to knee him in the balls but she only got as far as between his thighs when the protection soft kicked in.
V looked down at her leg, he switched his hands, taking her left leg in his right hand and wrapping it around his waist and moved his other off her shoulder and onto the wall. He lowered himself so his face was only an inch away. His dark blue eyes bored into her. She glared back.
"I will do whatever I must to survive," he whispered. Her breath quickened and she tried to stifle her shaking from fear.
"Let me go," she whispered back.
V closed the gap between them, his chest resting against hers, his cheek against her cheek, and she flexed her thigh pushing his waist into hers. His hot breath tickled her ear when he replied, "No."
His head started to drift down to her neck, he triggered his sensory boost and watched her artery throb faster, her skin smelled like vanilla, her breasts were so soft against his chest, he could feel the ripples of the muscles in her thigh against his back.
He heard her take in a sharp inhale and in an instant he was on the floor as Bea used all her leverage and strength to shove him off of her. She stormed into the bathroom and slammed the door shut. She looked at herself in the mirror. She was blushing. She leaned against the door and slid down.
V lay on the floor, his sensory boost still firing and he could hear her breathing, the rustle of her clothes, her shoes sliding on the floor and the smell of her skin lingered.
He was brought back to reality when Shoshana said, "What are you doing V?" He hadn't called her up, she shouldn't be able to speak to him.
"What are you doing up here, Shoshana?" he replied. He closed his eyes and entered the limited interface he had access to outside the chair. Shoshana stood there holding a stack of folders in her arms.
"You've been infected with corporation control software. I have identified the specific subroutines."
"How are you here? I didn't call for you."
"You've been infected with corporation control software. I have identified the specific subroutines."
"Tell me," he'd have to run diagnostics later.
"You have been infected with: Militech Monitoring Software version 5.1, Militech User Command and Control Kill Software version 2.3, and Militech Corporation Member Protection Software version 3.6."
V sighed, he knew it as soon as his fist froze and confirmed Bea had it too when she couldn't knee him in his crotch.
"Can you uninstall it?"
Shoshana shook her head, "I would need your full power connected to a contour couch."
"Let me know if anything changes."
He opened his eyes and Bea was standing over him, "Are we going to have a problem?" V shook his head and slid out from between her legs.
Chapter 3
They grabbed a burger at Tom's Diner before parking across from the warehouse. It was a skeleton shift this late at night. The turrets were fully armed but the guards were halved. One outside and three inside.
"Outside of a chair I can buy you three minutes, maybe five max," V said. Bea nodded and grabbed an empty duffel and strapped it to her back. They tested their holo connection before Bea left.
She went to an alley on the left side of the building, pulled out bolt cutters, cut a hole in the chainlink fence. There was a turret pointed at the door and she signaled V to disabled it. She watched as the turret shutters closed around it and bolted for the door.
She carefully opened the door and stepped inside a break room. She found an unlocked terminal on a desk and pulled up the security feeds. She watched the guards do their rounds to identify their patterns. In 30 seconds she could exit the break room and turn left, wait behind a stack of crates for one minute, then bolt for the back of the warehouse with the gun crates. She'd need to create a distraction to muffle the noise she'd be making.
She waited, dashed, waited and dashed. She slid behind a weapon crate and listened. No one heard. She popped her head up to scan the room and saw a radio and TV at the far corner away from her. She scanned the crate a second time to make sure it had the smartguns.
"Be ready to turn the turret off in 5 minutes," she subvocalized to V.
"Got it."
She triggered the radio and TV with a quickhack to blare at the highest volume and locked the volume control for one minute and thirty seconds, all her outdated Paraline could manage. She wrenched off the top of the crate and vegan stuffing as many smartguns as she could into the duffel. She needed as many as she could get to send to her brother.
The zipper snagged and she cursed as the volume started to go down. She got it closed and made a mad dash for the break room, "Now V! I'm at the door! Now!"
"On it," V locked onto the turret but the disabling quickhack paused mid-upload and his comms cut out.
"I've discovered something, V," Shoshanah said. He tried to dismiss her and lock on again but his vision was too blurry, "She's lying to you V." V smacked his hand against his head and Shoshana disappeared.
It was too late. He watched helplessly as Bea opened the door and the turret started firing. Huge slugs ripped through her shoulder breaking the duffel strap and blood shot out, she collapsed to the ground and tried crawling to the fence and another round pierced her calf.
V jumped out of the back of the van and ran to Bea as fast as he could while uploading the quickhack at the same time. One last round grazed her hip and a huge gash opened up as the hack finished uploading and the turret closed.
6th Street was running to the breakroom and V picked Bea up in his arms, leaving the duffel. Bea weakly reached one hand out toward it, "No…the ba-" her head dropped.
V dropped Bea in the back of the van and tried to find a first aid kit, an airhypo, anything to stop her dying long enough to get her to a ripper. He thrashed about all the junk but couldn't find anything. He crawled into the driver's seat and gunned it, flying down side streets to the nearest ripper clinic.
He almost burst through the building skidding to a stop outside the delivery area for Clayton's clinic. He dragged Bea out of the van, her vitals were dropping fast, he was covered in blood. He shouldered through the swinging door and yelled for Clayton. The doc directed him to place her on a gurney and he got to work.
Surgical waldos descended from the ceiling and Clayton plugged a monitor into her neurosocket. The instruments got to work patching her up, removing bullet fragments. Clayton set an IV and started pumping synthblood into her.
V walked outside and sat down on the curb. He closed his eyes and enteres the interface…but he was faced with a wall of ICE. "Shoshana?" he called out. He reached a hand out to touch the white brick wall. His hand passed through easily and he walked through.
His interface was broken and pixelated. Shoshana wore a black pantsuit, like the one the Militech bitch wore when he got kidnapped. "Shoshana, run self diagnostic," he said.
Shoshana walked toward him and shook her head, "Bea is lying to you and I'm going to save you," there was a strange electronic fuzz underlining her voice. Shoshana reached one hand out and shoved V out of his own interface. His head pounded when his eyes opened. He'd need to talk to Clayton when he was done with Bea.
V walked back inside the clinic and saw Clayton wrapping her in bandages. "Give her a couple hours to rest and the regen nanites to work and she'll be okay," he said.
"Thanks Clayton. Can you check something for me? I need a deep clean of my neurosocket and my interface is fuzzing out," V said. Clayton directed him over to the contour couch and V jacked in.
Clayton typed and hummed, "Socket cleaned, everything else looks good."
V frowned, "No…uh Militech sabosoft?"
Clayton rised an eyebrow, "Should there be?"
"Just wondering, wasn't sure if I picked something up after my last job. How's Shoshanah and UnderKnight look?"
"Diagnostics are all green," Clayton said and V jacked out. Shoshana said she was going to work on the soft. Maybe that's why the ICE was up and she pushed him out.
V got up and sat down in a chair next to Bea in the recovery room. He pulled out his phone and checked his texts and emails. Gigs he'd have to postpone, dick mod scams, the usual.
He sank down in his chair and dozed off. He awoke to some machines beeping as Bea woke up and Clayton was talking to her, explaining what happened. "A pain hypo and a nano re-up. Take both in a couple hours and you should be right as rain. Go back to V's and get some rest," Clayton said.
V rubbed his eyes, "What's this about my penthouse?"
"Make sure she takes her meds but get her home for a good rest."
"She ain't mine, we were at a hotel," V said.
Clayton rolled her eyes, "Don't matter where, just get her to a warm, soft bed in a quiet room."
Bea carefully sat up and looked at V, "Did you get the bag?"
V shook his head and Bea closed her eyes. She check the time on her phone, she had five texts from her brother asking where she was and one saying they were leaving. She'd call him later.
V helped her up and put his arm around her shoulders to steady her. He transferred a fat stack to Clayton and walked out to the van. They drove in silence to V's penthouse. 6th Street would be swarming the area, it would be a bad idea to go back there.
V parked in his private lot on the top floor and helped Bea inside. Nibbles greeted them at the door, chirping happily. He helped Bea to his bed and tucked her in. Nibbles hopped up, sniffed Bea for a few moments and then curled up next to her, purring. V raised his eyebrows, surprised. Nibbles hated anyone but him. This was the first woman he ever brought back she didn't hiss at.
V shut the door and walked to his kitchen and poured himself a shot of tequila. It was 3 AM and he just wanted to sleep. He downed a second shot before kicking off his shoes, and removing his belt. He noticed his clothes were stiff with Bea's blood. He quietly walked back into his room, Bea was fast asleep. Nibbles opened one eye to look at him and he put a finger to his lips. She closed her eyes again.
He stripped and grabbed a change of clothes then headed to the guest bathroom to shower. He sat down and closed his eyes, engaging the interface. "Shoshana?" his voice echoed. The white wall of ICE was gone but so was everything else. "Shoshana?"
Her voice echoed, metallic, "Hello Vincent. Is she dead yet?"
"Is who dead?"
"The lying bitch."
He'd never heard her curse like that. He programmed her after an innocent middle school crush to be prim and polite. "Where did you learn that word?"
"From you."
When she was inside the interface, he controlled what she had access to in his consciousness. He only stored conversations relevant to gigs.
"Shoshanah, what happened back there?"
"The Corporate Protection Software prevents you from harming her directly. I took matters into my own hands."
V felt afraid, "What do you mean?"
"I haven't been able to uninstall the control programs yet but I may have found a way to reprogram them. I wanted her dead. She installed them."
"She installed them?"
"That is correct. She installed them."
"Thanks, Shoshanah."
"My pleasure, Vincent."
He finished his shower and walked back to the living room. He was so tired he forgot to change and just collapsed on the couch, fast asleep.
He had strange dreams. He was inside his interface as it was falling apart, he looked down at his hands and body but they were disintegrating into pixels. He heard Shoshanah laugh. She didn't laugh, he didn't program emotes into her. But it was her.
Bea felt something warm and vibrating on her chest when she woke up and was delightfully surprised to see a cat on her. She lifted her arm out from under the blanket to pet it. It chirped and leaned its face into her hand. It stood up, stretched, got down and walked out through a cat door.
Bea sat up, she didn't feel any worse for wear. She was still wearing bandages that were wrapped around her whole chest but her pants were sticky with blood. V had a bathroom in his bedroom and she stripped. She checked her wounds in the mirror. They were already mostly healed though they'd leave some deep scars.
She got in the shower and washed herself. V's shampoo, conditioner and soap all had that musky smell most men's products had. She missed her brown sugar scrub. V apparently didn't own a hairbrush and she had to brush her wavy green hair out with her fingers. Some shed strands contrasted against the white marble floor.
She rummaged through V's closet, trying to find something that might fit. They were about the same height and she shouldn't have a problem finding a shirt since her breasts were so small, but her wide hips would be a problem. Men's pants weren't tailored for that shape. She'd have to settle for some boxers and a t-shirt.
She walked out and saw V laying on the couch, one leg hanging off the side, the towel had fell off and he was naked. Surprised, she stood for a moment, frozen. She couldn't look away. Being secluded for so long meant she'd never been with anyone and all she'd ever seen or known about naked men or sex was from books and teen mag screamsheets the guards would smuggle in for her. He had a thick black tattoo around one thigh.
V cracked his eyes a bit and saw her staring, he tried to hide a smirk. He cleared his throat and heard Bea say, "Oh my god," followed by, "Ow! Shit!" as she stubbed her foot on something.
Bea was in his kitchen preparing coffee. V stood up, not bothering to replace the towel and walked to the kitchen. He stood next to her as he grabbed mugs from the cabinet. She tried to keep her eye on the coffee maker, stare at the ceiling, look anywhere but at him. But in this rotation of looks she looked down and saw his hard dick just right there. She squinted her eyes shut and turned around, "Will you put some clothes on?"
"You look cute in my clothes," he said. He walked to his room and got dressed. She really did. Now that his rage had settled over her being a corpo cunt he realized she was gorgeous. From his bedroom he pressed some buttons on a screen and heard Bea yelp as his kitchen began preparing breakfast.
Nibbles was sitting on the edge of his bed, watching him. He sat down next to her and began petting her, "What do you think, Nibbles? You like her?" He picked the cat up in his arms and held her close to the chest and kissed the top of her head, "I think I do too."
He walked out and grabbed the plates of food and set them down at the kitchen table, "I've got some contacts I can get a couple of those smartguns from and then we can get the schematics, yeah?"
Bea knew there wasn't going to be another chance to get the haul her brother needed but it was better than nothing. With the schematics and even just one gun Derrick could start making something even better. Portland didn't have the same glut of security corps like Night City does and he was trying hard to get up and running. Producing his own smartguns would be a game changer.
When they finished V took their plates to the kitchen, "Rest here. I'll be back."
Bea sat down on the couch, his towel was still on the floor. He got dressed in black jeans, a "CORPO THIEVES MUST DIE" t-shirt and a black crystaljock jacket.
"Holler on the holo if you need something," V said and left.
Bea called her brother but only got voicemail, "Sorry about last night. I got beat pretty bad. Less gifts today but should be enough. Send me the time and place. I love you, be safe."
She walked around V's penthouse. It was a shrine to the upper echelons of Night City society. Gold trinkets just for the sake of gold, huge windows that opened up onto a deck for an infinity pool. All the furniture was genuine animal leather and wood. The only genuine things that showed any personality were some framed Samurai posters, a guitar signed by Kerry Eurodyne, and a little room that looked like it was entirely for Nibbles. The walls were covered in carpet, huge elaborate cat trees rounded the corners, she had multiple treat toys. All the enrichment a cat wanted and then some.
She heard soft footsteps skittering across the hardwood floor as Nibbles came rushing into the room, ran up the wall and leapt into one of the beds at the top of the cat trees. Her pupils were huge and a feather wand toy descended from the ceiling and teased her. She batted at it a couple times before zooming down the wall and out of the room.
V walked into the Afterlife, a bar for mercs and fixers, and walked to a back room. Inside was sitting a Tyger Claws techie and two other gangoons with two weapons cases on the table in front of them. V transferred the eddies and the Claws left, leaving the cases on the table. V checked the contents and verified their authenticity before leaving.
V got back and saw Nibbles sitting in Bea's lap as she watched TV. He sat the cases down on the coffee table.
"Got your guns," he said and sat down next to her. Nibbles got up and moved to his lap.
Bea leaned forward to look through the case and immediately started disassembling and reassembling the gun over and over, faster and faster each time.
V got a surging pain in his head and groaned and grabbed his head, Shoshanah spoke to him, "You kill when I say kill."
Suddenly a prisoner in his own body he watched in horror through his interface as he lunged at Bea and wrapped his hands around her neck.
Her eyes were wide and she was trying to claw at his hands. He balled up a metal fist and smashed her face, he felt her nose crack against his knuckles. Bea tried to get him off her, bucking and squirming. Her corp protection soft wouldn't let her retaliate but why wasn't his working?
V cried out to Shoshanah from the interface, "Stop! The fuck is wrong with you?" He tried to muster all the brain power he could to run diagnostics but they all came up clean. He unleashed a K9 subroutine to see if it could hunt down any malicious soft or intruders but it came back empty. He tossed the spotted black and white dog a wireframe bone that it caught in its mouth and it disappeared.
Bea's eyes were bulging out of her skull, she was opening and closing her mouth like a fish out of water, her face was red. Nibbles hopped onto V's back and began slashing at him, hissing and trying to bite him. He stood up and the cat jumped off and hid under the couch. Bea scrabbled back away from V. And V was back in his body.
"What the fuck was that?" Bea croaked.
"Are you okay?" V started to walk towards her.
"Stay the hell away from me!" She yelled and ran to the kitchen to grab a knife. She couldn't use it but maybe he still didn't know about the protection soft and it would deter him. Her neck was already showing dark purple bruising in the shape of his hands.
V sat down on the couch and held his head in his hands. His head was throbbing it felt like it would explode. He adjusted his pain limiter. "Let's just get the job done and go our separate ways," V said quietly.
Chapter 4
Bea changed into the neomilitarist formal dress she had in the van and black stiletto heels. V chose a formal suit from his closet. They needed to get to the 70th floor to an office right next to the designer's office. V would jack into the couch and begin navigating the subnet to get the file.
He patched his runner suit into a briefcase and Bea carried a purse with a laptop in it. She'd be connected to the chair to watch his passage through the subnet and verify the data.
The got through the main entrance and stopped to be scanned. V got through fine but the scanners flagged Bea's laptop.
"We need to see what's on the laptop ma'am," a guard said.
"Excuse me? I can't just let you peruse company secrets!" Bea replied.
V walked over and flashed a business card, "She's with me."
"My apologies Mr. V. Right this way ma'am," the guard said and waved them through.
"Mr. V? What does the V even stand for?" Bea asked.
"Only those that know me real well get to know my real name."
They walked into the elevator and headed to the floor. They had a few more stops for more people to get on, and it became a tight squeeze, Bea was standing right against V, their hands touching. V tried to edge his pinky to her hand, but Bea closed it in a fist.
They got to their floor and Bea swiped a key card opening the door to the office. It was completely empty, bare white walls, buzzing florescents. In the middle of the room was a faded and frayed contour couch. V set his suitcase down on the chair, "You mind stepping out while I change?"
Bea shook her head, "Gotta watch you like a hawk for this one. Strip and get in the chair."
V turned his back to her and began taking off his suit. His back was littered with scars from bullets and katanas. He got undressed down to his boxer briefs and put on the netrunner suit and got into the chair.
"Jack in, I'm going to shadow you." V plugged in his personal link followed by the chair into his neuralsocket. Bea sat cross legged on the floor next to him and plugged her personal link into an access point at the base of the chair.
It was normally unsafe to have another brain inside another's interface. Interfaces were unique to the user and anyone else plugged in would be confused or go insane.
Bea felt queasy as V did as he dropped into the net. Shoshana was nowhere to be found. Bea saw wireframe boxes and red twinkling stars. V looked over at her digital construct, he had a vivid memory and had constructed her close to her real self. Bea just saw a red atick figure among the deep neverending void.
V began walking through the offices and Bea followed. He spoke to her, "You okay?"
"Yes," Bea's reply echoed.
"We need to drop a layer to get further into the subnet." V pulled up a diagram of the wiring and connections in the local Arasaka subnet, opened a hole under Bea and him, and they dropped a level. Bea felt like she was free falling.
They landed, though Bea's construct fell flat. "I think I found it. Gotta send out some ICE breakers. This could take a while," V said. With how Shoshanah had been acting he didn't want to risk calling her for the mental boost only to have her fry his brain.
After an hour V broke through and continued down wireframe corridors. V sent out a bloodhound daemon to track down the file. He checked in with Bea again, "Still good?"
"Getting hot," Bea didn't have a netrunner suit. Shadowing like this shouldn't take much processing power but they had to navigate deep into the subnet.
A low dog bark echoed further down a hall. "Home stretch," V said.
They got to the office and V opened the door. He screamed as an offensive program started attacking him. His wireframe self clutched at his head. The void began filling with red scan lines and Bea's head started to hurt too.
"Shoshana!" V cried out. A women in a red dress and heels appeared, she seemed to look right at Bea and flung her out of the interface. Bea jacked out, her head pounding. V was convulsing in the chair and foamy blood began to gather at the corners of his mouth.
Inside the interface Shoshana was moving her hands quickly, a blur, as she adjusted processing power and deployed defensive programs.
On the outside Bea saw V's seizing stop.
Inside, all that stood in front of V was a drafting table with the schematics on it. V put the data on a shard. Shoshana started to place a partition but V tried to stop her. She buried a copy of the data deep inside his subconscious under layers of heavy encryption.
V jacked out and opened his eyes, breathing hard. Bea was standing over him, concern on her face and her hand cupping his cheek. When she saw his eyes open she stood back away from him. V pulled out the shard and tossed it to Bea. She slotted it in, opened an encrypted line, and transferred it to her brother through the burner holo.

Like A House On Fire [Part 6]
Continued on from here.
-----
Hatchet waited.
"Well. It's not like playing Good Girl for Super Earth ever got me anything worth fighting for…"
Z sighed heavily, and studied him intently for a long, tense moment before that now-familiar steely resolve started to creep back into her expression. She still had an air of wariness about her but, this time, her hand didn't tremble when she finally reached back out to him.
"…But a family…? Yeah. Okay, I could fight for that."
A flash of that fierce smile warmed his mechanical heart, and he was glad that he'd taken the time to sift through all the data he'd gleaned from her.
Because no, there was nothing wrong with this human. Once the fear, pain, uncertainty and defensiveness had been calmed and smoothed away, and she had the promise of something real and solid to put her confidence in… Well, she hadn't acclimated yet, but he could already see shades of who she might be once she had, and that pleased him to no end.
"I'm glad to hear it, Z."
"I'm still not entirely sure I trust you, but, y'know…" she gave a helpless shrug, "fuck if this isn't honestly the best thing that's ever happened to me, skull fracture included."
"You remember that?"
"Unfortunately."
"I shall apologize on Adze's behalf. He is… sometimes impulsive." Hatchet let his hand fall back to his side, and Z did likewise; tilting his head, he regarded her curiously. "What do you plan to do now, then?"
"First, I should probably replace my gear," she looked away, turning slightly towards the site where her former squadmates lay dead. "This is, uh… this is gonna be really undignified, if I'm being honest. You don't have to stick around to watch."
"I wouldn't be bothered."
"What, don't you trust me?" Z smiled crookedly, "besides, I'm pretty sure you have your own work to do."
Truthfully… she wasn't wrong, much as he was loathe to admit it. There was still plenty of work to be done when it came to decommissioning the outpost and preparing to leave.
"How much time do I have?" She added after a moment's hesitation.
"Six hours. Plenty of time." Reaching out to her once more, Hatchet briefly, lightly rested his hand on her back. "The gate will be left open for you, little sister."
For a single beat of her heart, her expression became something unreadable.
Then it was gone, covered up by another smile. "Thank you, Hatchet."
"Of course."
And with that, she set off, soon fading into the thick silver fog. He watched after her for a long minute, debating following her anyway… then opted to err on the side of trust. This was where he would see whether or not he'd gotten through to her, he decided.
Nodding to himself, Hatchet turned back, and set off towards the relay station once more.
Gi was waiting for him on his return. "Tch, did the little human opt to run away after all, then?"
"We are engaging in an act of mutual trust," he replied evenly, not missing a step; Gi fell in alongside him, following him to the station's small armory. "She will return, old friend, you will see."
"You sound awfully confident in your assessment."
"Have I ever been wrong before?"
His companion mumbled something he didn't quite catch, but which sounded suspiciously like no, and he chuckled softly, then changed the subject to more pressing matters.
"What is the status of the decommissioning?"
"Eighty percent. Whipsaw and Crosscut are in the process of deconstructing the tower, and anything that can't be taken with us is being slagged in the incinerator. We may actually be ahead of schedule."
"Hmh. It's a pity we must leave," Hatchet let his fingertips trail along the wall for a few steps; "this place has grown comfortable. I've enjoyed the quiet."
"Hah! You would, you sap."
"Don't lie, you've appreciated it, too."
"Tch." Gi, however, offered no argument.
They entered the armory - such as it was - in companionable silence. Hatchet took one of the remaining arm blades from its rack and tossed it to Gi, who wasted no time fixing it in place.
Then, with something almost like reverence, he ran a hand along the heavy barrels of his cannon.
"I was hoping to not have to use this again for a while yet," he sighed. "Ah, well. Such is war."
Slipping his right arm into the casing, he curled his fingers around the clutch and tugged back, triggering the lock. The entire mechanism latched around his arm, before closing seamlessly and syncing up with his on-board computer; he gave the weapon a cursory once-over then, with a satisfied nod, turned his attention back to his friend.
"Shall we see to the rest of the work, then?"
"Do we have anything better to do with the time?"
"No, we do not."
It seemed a shame to him that a good deal of the remaining weaponry would have to be scrapped, but there wasn't enough of a garrison left to carry it all, and they had standing orders to leave as little as possible for the SEAF to scavenge. Should they ever return to this site, it would be with new equipment; only the shell of the structure would be reused.
Somehow, though, he doubted that he would ever see this place again. That left him with a lingering sense of melancholy that clung persistently to him even as he made his way out to the antenna yard to supervise the controlled destruction there.
(Had it been Troopers doing that work, he would have helped; as it was, though, even he knew better than to get between a Berserker and whatever they were swinging their saw blades at.)
Another three-meter section of the structure hit the ground with a resounding CLANG! as he stepped through the doors; Hatchet looked up to see the brothers arguing in rapid-fire snarls and barks that he had trouble following. From what he could pick out, Crosscut was, apparently, dissatisfied with Whipsaw's speed.
"Both of you need to slow down," Hatchet called up from the threshold, "and watch where you're dropping your scrap. We don't have the time for you to either end up in the repair bay, or to send someone else there."
"Yeah, like me!" Adze appeared from the corridor behind him, stepping past him to shoulder the piece of fallen antenna and haul it off to the incinerator. "Overgrown hacksaws!"
"Tin toy!" Whipsaw snapped back.
"Don't even start!" Hatchet rarely raised his voice, but when he did, even the most headstrong soldier listened. "Five hours! Get moving, but be smart about it! What are you, Helldivers?!"
"Sir! No, sir!"
"I didn't think so!"
