Facebook Doesn't Know What It Does With Your Data, Or Where It Goes

em1ly shares a report from Motherboard: Facebook is facing what it describes internally as a "tsunami" of privacy regulations all over the world, which will force the company to dramatically change how it deals with users' personal data. And the "fundamental" problem, the company admits, is that Facebook has no idea where all of its user data goes, or what it's doing with it, according to a leaked internal document obtained by Motherboard. "We've built systems with open borders. The result of these open systems and open culture is well described with an analogy: Imagine you hold a bottle of ink in your hand. This bottle of ink is a mixture of all kinds of user data (3PD, 1PD, SCD, Europe, etc.) You pour that ink into a lake of water (our open data systems; our open culture) ... and it flows ... everywhere," the document read. "How do you put that ink back in the bottle? How do you organize it again, such that it only flows to the allowed places in the lake?" (3PD means third-party data; 1PD means first-party data; SCD means sensitive categories data.) The document was written last year by Facebook privacy engineers on the Ad and Business Product team, whose mission is "to make meaningful connections between people and businesses," and which "sits at the center of our monetization strategy and is the engine that powers Facebook's growth," according to a recent job listing that describes the team. This is the team that is tasked with building and maintaining Facebook's sprawling ads system, the core of the company's business. And in this document, the team is both sounding an alarm, and making a call to change how Facebook deals with users' data to prevent the company from running into trouble with regulators in Europe, the US, India, and other countries that are pushing for more stringent privacy constraints on social media companies. "We do not have an adequate level of control and explainability over how our systems use data, and thus we can't confidently make controlled policy changes or external commitments such as 'we will not use X data for Y purpose.' And yet, this is exactly what regulators expect us to do, increasing our risk of mistakes and misrepresentation," the document read. In other words, even Facebook's own engineers admit that they are struggling to make sense and keep track of where user data goes once it's inside Facebook's systems, according to the document. This problem inside Facebook is known as "data lineage."

Vertex eyes controllable genetic drugs with $1.3bn Obsidian alliance

Vertex Pharma has ramped up its involvement in gene-editing medicines for the second time in a week, paying Obsidian Therapeutics $75 million upfront to access its technology platform. 

Vertex is also offering up to $1.3 billion in milestone payments in the deal, which will focus on using small-molecule compounds to “fine tune” the effects of genetic medicines in the body.

The alliance is based on Obsidian’s cytoDRIVE platform, which uses already approved small-molecule drugs alongside gene-editing medicines to control the expression of protein from a gene sequence. The approach relies on the use of drug responsive domains (DRDs) on the gene-editing medicine, which can be used to either increase or decrease protein expression.

For example, adding a small-molecule might stabilise the medicine, allowing levels of the target protein to increase. Alternatively, a drug can be administered that switches off the genetic medicine and brings protein expression to a halt.

“The ability to tune gene-editing activity to a specific level is an important innovation that has the potential to address several serious diseases,” said Vertex’s chief scientific officer David Altshuler in a statement, which did not disclose the specific diseases covered by the partnership.

Vertex gets an exclusive option on candidates for “multiple diseases”, and will be responsible for preclinical and clinical development if it exercises those rights.

The latest deal comes as the ink has barely dried on a revised deal between Vertex and gene-editing pioneer CRISPR Therapeutics regarding CTX001, CRISPR/Cas9-based drug in trials for sickle cell disease (SCD) and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia (TDT).

The two companies have been collaborating since 2015 and working on CTX001 since late 2017, but Vertex has now stepped up its involvement, handing over $900 million upfront with another $200 million in milestones to do so.

Vertex is taking over 60% of the costs of the programme in return for getting the same proportion of profits on sales if CTX001 reaches the market.

CTX001 represents an ‘ex vivo’ application of gene-editing, in which the technology is used to modify a patient’s own cells outside the body.

The drug generated impressive results at last year’s American Society of Haematology (ASH) annual meeting, which backed up the possibility of using it as a one-shot treatment for SCD and TDT.

In patients with SCD the drug eliminated painful attacks known as vaso-occlusive crises (VOCs) in a three to 15-month follow-up period, while patients with TDT no longer needed blood transfusions to control symptoms three to 18 months after receiving CTX001.

For obsidian, the latest deal follows partnerships for the cytoDRIVE technology with Bristol-Myers Squibb/Celgene and MD Anderson Cancer Centre in the US.

I redid the Reference because I wanted this little guy to be more cartoony- I removed the sewed on wings and made the three line whisker mark take the place of the splotch instead. Felt it it cluttered the design a bit. Sticker's form changes when he leaves his AU, SCDverse. He becomes a bit more "realistic", gaining eye definition and hands. I guess he can kind of revert to the simplified form if I wanted to use it for an emotion or comedic purposes SCDverse has changed a bit since the Old Reference But basically-

SCDverse is a crossover AU of Stray Cat Doors by パルスモ株式会社 | PULSMO,INC. A puzzle game with cats. Please play it if you like the sound of that, There's 3 games out at the time of writing this.

This self indulgent crossover AU of mine has evolved into so much more- It's basically kind of loosely connected to Stray Cat Doors now like how UTMV is to Undertale, you know?

But Moving on- Sticker is an Ink variant and SCDverse is like a kids show where everyone knows they are in one and Sticker is the Protagonist [Because I love Ink]. Though Everyone knows they are in a kids show it's more like the knowledge of having The Audience there with you and they just live with that knowledge. Sticker is the only one who's trying to help the Audience directly.

Since SCDverse is so safe and Perfect- The Cast can't even comprehend of why would anyone hurt someone, the most you can get is slapping or tripping someone, really. You can't die here and so the Cast doesn't know what death is.

In short, SCDverse is aggressively family friendly.
