On July 5th 1820, William Rankine, the engineer and physicist, was born.

William John Macquorn Rankine was the son of professional soldier and later civil engineer David Rankine and the daughter of Glasgow banker Barbara Grahame. He attended grammar school at Ayr and Glasgow only a few years after the family moved there in 1830.

After reading, at the age of fourteen, Isaac Newton's greatest work, Principia Mathematica in Latin, he became interested in physics.

At the age of sixteen, in 1836, he began to study natural science at the University of Edinburgh, where he was taught, among other things, natural philosophy under James David Forbes and natural history under Robert Jameson.

In 1838 he left the university and became an assistant to the Irish civil engineer John Benjamin MacNeill. He worked here on the design of railways, the construction of ports and the construction of sewers. In 1855 he was appointed Professor of Civil Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Glasgow.

Rankine became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1849 and of the Royal Society in London in 1853. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Swedish Society of Sciences and of the American American Academy of Arts and Sciences. In 1857 he founded a Scottish branch of the "Institution of Civil Engineers" and served as its first president until 1870. In 1857 Rankine received an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, Dublin.

In addition to his work as a civil engineer, Rankine has made a number of contributions to science. He wrote standard works on mechanics, the theory and practice of steam, the principles of civil engineering, and mechanical principles of construction.

Rankine's work was able to bridge the gap between engineering practice and scientific inquiry.

˖ ࣪ ଓ oh they would spoil you so much, especially with dresses and books. the two love whisking you away and going on little shopping trips. jingyi in particular loves getting you into all sorts of clothing stores so that you can try out a wide range of dresses. seeing you twirl around in them and such makes him so happy<3 rishen is usually the one who takes you to bookstores, urging you to take more while he holds the stack for you  ˖ ࣪ ଓ oh they let you put plants all over the house. with them urging you to simply stay and relax at home, they encourage you a lot with your love for taking care of plants. should you want, they’re always ready to order the really exotic or unique ones ˖ ࣪ ଓ they recognise that you don’t like being around many people which is why whenever they take you out, they make sure it’s typically where not many people would roam. they don’t want to make you uncomfortable in any way. with that in mind they might not always bring you to alchemax but they’re always taking quick breaks so that they can pop in to give you some love and affection back home  ˖ ࣪ ଓ recognise that you are a shy soul, which they may at times play around with. usually by flustering you because they love seeing how timid and blushy you get. jingyi is always throwing some flirt around and doting you with kisses while rishen teases you at times. randomly sweeping you off of your feet to swarm you with love  ˖ ࣪ ଓ seeing as animals warm up to you easily, their four dobberman dogs and their siamese cat absolutely adore you. often turning on them to instead dote on you which jingyi and rishen playfully whine about. saying that you are stealing their children

“what about this one?” a pretty, white dress with light red accents is brought into view and held by the hanger in front of you. amber eyes taking a once-over at your form in the mirror.

“jingyi,” you call softly, looking up at your boyfriend with a flutter of your gaze. “we’ve gotten quite a few haven’t we? plus all the books. . .”

“oh please,” he chuckles, bringing his hand down to give your waist a soft squeeze before he gently ushers you into the changing room with the dress. “just one more, qin ai’de. I’m sure rishen would love this.”

“I would indeed,” smiles the scientist who leans back against one of the chairs, holding the bag full of books he bought for you from the bookstore.

with that, you take a quick visit to the changing room to get dressed and show them the new outfit. one that had their eyes lighting up the second they see you. with rishen motioning you over to stand between his legs so that he could observe the dress with a smile and lean up to press a kiss to your lips with a croon.

“tan hermosa. . .”

a small blush forms on your face as you look down at the floor shyly at all the compliments being uttered every time your boyfriends see you.

“look at you, so pretty” jingyi hums softly circling around you to also inspect the dress a bit closer, hands gently stroking down your arm.
