Chie walks away from the chest. Best to leave it alone. She could explain away looking at things in plain view, but not how or why she was rummaging through a locked chest.

Chie returns to the kitchen, opening and closing doors just to see what is there. Old plates, mismatched cups, lots of plastic cutlery with a few metal pieces.

T-ti-tok. Tik… ti-ti-ti-tok.

Chie frowns, the clock grating her. It was coming right above her. She looks up past the closed window to see if she can reach the clock to remove the batteries, reset the hands, or something short of smashing it to pieces.

The wall is bare.

Chie takes a step back. It's not ticks and tocks.

Chie spins, throws open the nearest door to an interior room and slams it shut. She wills her breathing to slow. Will they come in? Are they just waiting for an entry point to open? Or are they just letting her know they're there, watching with wet, wide eyes.

Standing in the dark isn't helping her nerves. Chie feels the wall and flicks on a switch. A desk sits against the far wall, flanked by bookshelves filled with newspapers, magazines, journals, books, and other odds and ends. An old lamp sits in the corner, its naked bulb hovering over a sheet-covered armchair. The dust is thick and motes float in the disturbed air.

Any other empty space is taken up by stacks and stacks of cardboard boxes. Unlabeled and haphazardly piled together, some tower close to the ceiling, while others stand at just shoulder height. The ones at the bottom have bent under the weight of the ones above it.

Letting her curiosity override her fear, Chie pulls one down and opens it. Stuffed inside are odds and ends: worn women's running shoes, trophies for track and basketball made out to a Jillian Gilman, and team jerseys covered in messy scribbles.

Chie picks up a medal. First place, Jillian Gilman. The cheap metal is pitted with rust and the blue ribbon is frayed. Her fingers itch with curiosity.

A digital clock flashes the time in the corner. It's late and will only be getting later.
