Pairing: Bucky Barnes x F!Reader

Summary: You have an old car that constantly gives you issues, but you refuse to get a new one. If you did, that meant you wouldn't be able to see your favorite mechanic as much.

The tow truck lowers your car on the lot of Barnes Auto Shop. Bucky stands there with his hands on his hips looking disapprovingly.

You hop out of the tow truck and give him a sheepish grin, "Heeeey, Bucky."

He groans as he approaches you, "Sweetheart, you're killin' me here! Just get a new car, please!"

"No way! Angel still has some life in her!" you pat the top of the pale blue Ford Anglia. It was your grandpa's car. He loved that thing and left it to you in his will when he passed. You couldn't give up Angel. Giving her up would mean giving up the last piece you had for your grandpa.

Bucky sighs and looks at Angel, "Looks like Angel is on her last legs, if you ask me."

You narrow your eyes and cross your arms over your chest, "Hey, I'm giving you business, Barnes."

He chuckles and steps closer to you, "What you're giving me is a headache, sweetheart," he pecks you lips, "You're taking advantage of me and my business!"

You playfully roll your eyes, "Oh please. You and I both know this is mutually beneficial. I get my car fixed and you get amazing head from me," you give him a wink and he shakes his head.

He gives another deep chuckle and pats your butt, "Go take a seat while I look under the hood."

"Can you look under my hood after?" you ask with smirk.

"If you behave!" he says with a laugh.

You watch Bucky with interest as he leans over the hood of your car. Turns out, you ran out of oil. So nothing too bad that needed to be fixed.

"Stop eye-fucking me. It's distracting," he says with a grin.

You grin back, "Can't help it. You know how I love my men all rugged and covered in grease. Every woman's fantasy."

After your car was topped off, Bucky turned on the engine. It took a few tries, but Angel roared back to life.

You hop off the stool you occupied with glee, "She liiiiives!" You wrap your arms around Bucky and peck his stubbled cheek, "Thank you, baby."

"Yeah. Yeah, but seriously, you need to get a new car. I'm not saying get rid of Angel. It's just...it'd ease my heart and mind knowing you're driving a well-trusted car."

You give him a sigh, "I know. My grandpa-"

"I know. If it makes you feel any better, we can keep Angel here. Put her on display and you can drive her around the lot just to keep her going."

"I'll think about it," you say, a part of you already coming to terms with parting from Angel.

"Thank you, sweetheart," he mumbles and kisses your lips, "Now...about that payment..." he alludes with a smirk and dark mischief in his eyes.

🌻 How old is your Rook? How do they feel about celebrating their birthday? What gift has meant the most to them?

Rook ‘Worne’ Thorne is mid-thirties. He doesn’t know his exact age and doesn’t know his birthday. Parents were plenty dead before memories could be formed. Born and grew in Kirkwall, more specifically Darktown, and those early years were simple survival, he doesn’t remember much. But he’s a man in love with life and doesn’t mind making it awkward for people when they ask. ‘Ah shit I forgot! It was yesterday, no one ever remembers’ type stuff.

When it comes to celebrating he would normally do something special around the new year with friends. Gather up those in the same situation and party. A tradition for him in Kirkwall and later at Weisshaupt, he’s far from the only one that doesn’t know their birthday after all. And hey when things are scarce it just makes sense to put all the holidays together and celebrate another year of survival. He loves parties and birthdays, loves celebrating anything really. He’d likely be delighted to pick a special day for himself but the thought would never occur to him. Never really had time to think about it, never thought it would really matter or never saw a need? Like why? Would anyone care about a ‘fake’ birthday’?

As far as gifts go, the one that meant the most was a book he got from Varric as a kid. He credits it, and the dwarf, for his ability to read. And he credits it and the dwarf’s stories for most of his morals and character, he latched onto what he could. So that first one is a keystone, ‘borrowed’ plenty others, but that was his. And as much as he loves all the new grave gold, I think he’d treasure a first edition signed copy of whatever Bellara is writing most if it were about his Veilguard family. Especially if she includes some of the details Emmrich let him share about ‘romance’. He always dreamed of being in one of Varric’s books. Oh, also a handkerchief Emmrich gave him the first day they met. Professor was tired of seeing him use his sleeve. He’s never used the handkerchief.

🌸 Does your Rook have any siblings or close friends they see as such? Where are they during the events of Veilguard?

No siblings. And yet all the siblings. He would consider every single Warden a sibling. You’re kin if you undertake the Joining; survive or not. He might be a shit Warden that leaves collapsed buildings in his wake, but there’s always a breath of relief from his peers when they’re assigned to work with him. After all they know the job will get done, they’ll get back alive in one piece, and Worne’ll happily take the fall for any fires he started, or they both started. He delights in pissing off the Warden Commander and holds his position as ‘worst Warden’ with pride.

Greta is a very dear friend, she’s one of the very few (if only) Wardens left from around his entry time. They’ve been on again off again friends with benefits but always strictly platonic.

Antoine and Evka consider him their adult son. Forever a blessed third wheel that might’ve taken too many hits to the head. He’s really hoping they want kids or adopt some after all this Blight business because he wants to be a ‘big brother or uncle’. He’d love to be the Varric for others. He knows he’s not nearly as eloquent, but he can throw you really high into the air and catch you and isn’t that almost as good? He’s made it a personal mission to make sure Mila gets everything she needs and wants because my goodness she could run a country and he owes her his life. That’s his niece right there.

🌱 Was Rook involved romantically with anyone before Veilguard? What was their partner like? How did the relationship end?

Officially no. Romance has never been a thing he has time for, he was always fascinated by whatever Antoine and Evka had but a future isn’t something a Warden plans for. Didn’t know what real ‘courtship’ looked like in reality. Emmrich confused the hell out of him at first. Worne had relied on his looks and simple flirting to drop hints for ‘wanna bang?’ Something clicked in his head at “Close your eyes. Take a breath.” The thought occurred with a peek, ‘oh this is like the books!’, “Ah.” eyes shut, “Slow. Deep.” and just awash with, ‘This happens?! That stuffs real?’ Cue head over heels for the necromancer.

That said. Near the end of his time in Kirkwall he was working with a more ‘official’ group of criminal young folk. He partnered up for a lot of jobs with an apostate mage. Not many of those around, the group only knew the one, and so they put him in Rook’s care. Guarding a target has always been his specialty, especially if they’re a mage with any healing capability. He’ll take a hit to make sure nothing gets near the caster. Mindset of ‘well if they get you we’re all dead, just gotta kill them in time for you to patch me up’.

Anyways. They were crushing on each other when a job went bad. Everyone dead but them. Rook and mage were given the choice of gallows or Wardens. His friend didn’t survive the Joining. The lich ritual was not a fun thing to experience with that in the back of his head but he hasn’t mentioned that history to anyone. Greta wouldn’t even remember the name of the mage and Rook doesn’t speak of it.

🌹 What’s the first genuine fight Rook got in with their love interest about? How was it resolved?

Worne nearly killed a Nevarran nobleman. It wasn’t long after the skull fade thing and he was deep into his romance books at that point. They were in the city to pick up some materials for Emmrich, who was off talking with the shopkeeper, when Rook caught an offhand comment nearby. Something about the way the man said Volkarin was off, threatening, dismissive, disrespectful? He’d heard violence like that before.

So he walked on over and quietly, politely asked the noble to explain himself and/or apologize. Rook’s not sure what words were exchanged after that because all he remembers is punching that smug face after them. Laid him out flat. Broke his nose. Honestly Worne wasn’t expecting the noble to fold so quick based on how boldly he spoke. But that head bounce on the ground was bad and the noble likely would’ve died if Emmrich hadn’t rushed over in horror. Rook was ready to finish the job because you don’t leave threats alive. They had words. A lot of words before Emmrich all but demanded Rook wait for him back at the Lighthouse while he dealt with this.

Rook left with a, ‘Fine! Why don’t you fuck him when you’re done kissing his ass?’ Didn’t go to the Lighthouse though because no way in hell he’s leaving that mage alone in danger so he haunted alleyways within sight and showed up just after Emmrich. Many more heated words were exchanged at the Lighthouse. But it led to some deeper talk. They resolved it when Emmrich offered to let Rook hold his hand or the like whenever he felt the need to ‘deal with a threat’ of the sort. Emmrich would handle it peacefully and he’d let go if/when violence was warranted. It’s worked for them since. Lotta threats out there.

🌼 If someone was to ask Spite what Rook smells like, what would he say?

“Smells like earth. Old leather, dirt…blood. Rook’s? Another? Both.”

🌷If Rook needed to get away from their responsibilities for a moment, where would they go? Where is their safe space outside the Lighthouse?

He refuses to disclose his hiding place at the Lighthouse. Only Manfred knew where it was and it’s where they kept their ‘stick stash’ of staves, swords, wands, and daggers Rook would gather in Arlathan for Manfred, nothing like a good stick. And nothin like a good stick fight. Guesses are you have to crawl through a pretty tight tunnel to get there.

Outside of the Lighthouse he’ll find the latest shittiest bar in Docktown. He wants it loud, he wants it crowded, and he wants his crab cakes and beer nuts with nasty beer. He’s found the best place to be alone is in a crowd. Very good at disappearing in such. Often after he’s had his fill he’ll look for a ‘comfy’ spot in the literal streets to nap or sleep for the night. No better place to be invisible than literally in everyone’s view looking destitute. His safe place is literally the most dangerous streets he can find.

🌺 Is there an object from Rook’s childhood they look back on fondly? (ie a favorite stuffed animal, book, or food)

He has a stone that he found in Darktown (actually features in a blurb). Think worry stone. He found it before he was Rook, so before six. He liked the shape and feel. It’s a simple dull grey oval. Might’ve killed a man with it once. Considers it lucky. He kept that storybook Varric gave him as a kid back at Weisshaupt, but considers it lost after the fortress fell. He’s not too torn up about it, he memorized it anyway, but it still stings.

🌿 Does your Rook have any tattoos? What was the moment when they got them like? If they’re a Crow where is their de Riva brand located? What vallaslin do they have/how did they earn it if they’re Dalish?

Worne has two tattoos. He got his second in the classic Warden ‘Joining’ style on his right arm, cup and lines and the like. The Wardens still make fun of him for how he sat for it. For a man that’ll take a dislocated shoulder with a grin he is the ultimate baby when it comes to sitting for a tattoo. And it’s not that he thinks it hurts, he just hates needles. Something about a wound that doesn’t leave much a mark unnerves him. He’d likely have more tattoos if he could get over that thought but ew.

His first tattoo is the Kirkwall coat of arms, it’s about five inches and on his upper mid back. He’s not telling you about the third. It’s a small Rook chess piece and he’s not saying where it is. But yeah, plenty of bellyaching from him when he got them all, which is rare for him.

PROS:

everything with old man riker seeing deanna again made me so emotional i LIIIIIVE for that kind of shit

generally i enjoyed the future/present story, it was fun to see how miserable will would be without deanna. also enjoyed him being awkward and jealous

oh and the data stuff was sad. the future!will lies to data about future!data and then will and deanna talk about how data wouldnt be super comfortable knowing that he'd be willing to kill deanna. idk. i loved it. so sad

i really enjoyed will and deanna's first meeting at the wedding & i love getting to know more about betazed and deanna's home life

the tree climbing scene was fun

kidnapping/search and rescue/first time together in the dirty forest on the ground, fantastic

the abstract art stuff. loved that

CONS/inaccuracies to the show that bothered me though i know the book was written before certain eps of the show came out i can't help but be annoyed:

ten years prior to the pilot??? so theyre like 18/20? no thanks. also we know it was only like 2-3 years ago

the way deanna is portrayed is just kind of meh to me, i get that shes a "very serious psychology student" but the holier-than-thou-because-youre-a-man-who-wants-sex attitude feels so out of place for her (thinks about the ep The Price and laughs)

their relationship was WAY too short. i couldnt figure out how long it was supposed to be but it felt like a few weeks at the most? like a summer fling. not the right vibe

deanna getting pissed at will for being assaulted by wendy lol i know its a book from the 90s written by a man but jesus christ he mentions being basically black out drunk

the naked therapy thing was funny but also weird. and the scene where will asks chandra's dad about it went on WAY too long

anyway. overall i enjoyed it a lot. 8.5/10. even the stuff i didnt like i still enjoyed cuz yknow i read a lot of fanfiction and this is just a nice published one

it sure looks that way to me, anon! we all know sjm likes to take inspiration from myths and fairytales and i know she never does a line for line retelling but god i am so excited for a gwynriel book lol and az is like the perfect acotar version of eric. they're both oblivious as hell and it makes me laugh. i love it so much

i want them to be friends first, as many gwynriels do, i want them to develop that care and trust for each other without the romantic obligations. i want it to be slow and steady and for them both to have those "ha i don't like them that way... right?" moments, i want them to get jealous because i'm petty and liiiiive for drama like that in books. overall i just really want gwyn to take az by storm and he's so swept up in the hurricane that is her that he doesn't realize he's in love until it's this all consuming thing, you know?

I just realized both heinkel and subaru both have feelings of inferiority to their parents (which caused subaru to be a neet. )heinkel is nowhere near his parents strength and felt the weight of his parents legacywhile subaru felt inferior to his father and is burdened with being called kenichis son when asked about who he'd make the protagonist if not Subaru, said Heinkel would be the mc.

Heinkel met his wife ( who would tell him that she is sure he can be the next sword saint so she was his rem ) before he had a crisis like Subaru did so he was able to bounce back sooner than him. But with her now gone and Rein easily being better than him it was like a rubber band and shot him even further back

Absolutely yes to all of this. Subaru and Heinkel have lots of parallels and I LIIIIIVE for all of them because – while they both faced similar circumstances, the way they dealt with them was completely different.

And arguably, Heinkel did better—at first, at least. Mostly because he did worse. Let me explain:

Heinkel and Subaru both deal with huge expectations—they both fail to meet them. But as far as we know, Subaru actually did meet them at first??? He was popular, had good marks, and people liked him!!! Then he had to put in an effort, didn’t, failed, felt shame about it, and ended up shutting in because of it.

Meanwhile Heinkel was a failure from the get-go! He doesn’t know greatness. Until he meets Louanna��then he does something right??? He has mommy and daddy issues and some people try to ruin his (already pretty bad, because of the aforementioned expectations) reputation, but he still manages to be a good husband.

Cheers for him, cheers for him.

Until he doesn’t, because something bad happened to Louanna, she fell into a coma and the one thing he was good at… he is not anymore.

And I think this is the core difference!!! (I might be wrong, but everyone, please tell me if you disagree).

Subaru dealt terribly with failure at first because he knows how greatness feels. Thus, he shut in.

Heinkel dealt decently with failure at first because he was never great. Then he does, and when he fails, all his previous insecurities return.

But one went through the crisis as a teen, and the other went through the crisis as an adult.

The fact Heinkel is better when Wilhelm gets erased shows his daddy issues are what affects his interpretation of the entire world. More than Louanna’s coma itself, even.

I headcanon that part of the reason Wilhelm is so kind to Subaru is because he feels Subaru is similar to Heinkel, and as he totally failed to bond with his son, he projects his relationship there and tries to bond with a blank state Heinkel instead.

I never really read Aganau If so I can’t talk about that Subaru, but the *from zero* speech always felt to me like the moment in which Subaru learnt to accept failure as something that you deal with to later on try again better, instead of something you must live with and can’t change.

Heinkel’s only success was his wife, so his way to become successful again is to bring her back?

I might be rambling now.

Many kids shows had them singing in the intro, and then in the outro it was just an instrumental of the intro. A lot of disney cartoons had that. But this was the opposite. THE INTRO was instrumental and then they sang in the outro. And for some reason it became way more impactful because of it.

This show aired in Sweden and only in Sweden, but the music in it is wonderful. And the outro song, where they sing goodbye or goodnight in several languages… ”Adjö, Godnatt, Maasalama, Adios, Goodbye” have always stuck with me. The coolest part is that the version changes each episode depending on the theme. This episode was about a magical garden, so the outro has a ”magical garden” theme. One time they were in space, and the outro was more techno.

2. Goodbye song from Bear in the big blue house

I WANT THIS SONG AT MY FUNERAL!!! (the swedish version does not mention the moon, bear or the big blue house and thus can fit more). I also wanna sing this as a lullaby to my kids.

Luna may have scared crap out of me as a kid, but this song just soothed me so much that it didn't matter.

There’s a scene from the US version of the show Being Human, where one of the main characters, Josh—who is a werewolf—unknowingly scratches his girlfriend and thus turns her into a werewolf as well. She drops him off in the woods on the night of the full moon, but begins turning herself before she’s able to leave.

He wakes up the following morning, and comes back to the sight of his car destroyed; massive claw marks in the seats, the metal, everything. His girlfriend wakes up naked in a pile of leaves, blood and dirt all over her from the night before.

I’d really love to write a million fics about this part, about their feelings and the effects of the transformation beyond what was shown in the show.

you’re querying a bonkai inspired book? AHHH i hope it finds an agent and gets published because ive been looking for their dynamic in trad pubbed work + other media. hmm basic question but what was it about the ship that made you want to write original work inspired by it?

hii!! yes, it's called The Forgotten Legacy (or maybe The Unwanted Heir, that's TBD lol). I'm pitching it as a Witch-coded Bridgerton inspired 8 book series (Witcherton, if you will), and I'm so unbelievably obsessed. I've had such a fun time injecting it with true to life witch lore and specifics on covens/pantheons/and practices across the globe.

Each book will focus on one of the Attwood siblings - starting with a childhood friends to rivals to lovers new adult story.

I run a yt channel where I recap fantasy media and the stars aligned for me creatively this time when I reached tvd s6. I had just finished a project and was ready for something new, and Kai is like the closest thing I have to a muse. He sneaks his way into all the MMC's I write, but this time I just went all in.

I've always been drawn to the secrets of the gemini coven/the flashbacks from their childhood we don't get to see. So I decided to build my own magical family/world where I could figure all of those things out, add to them, and do what I wanted with the all the intersecting arcs.

The biggest thing I changed is that only the dad is cruel, so my MMC grows up with a mom/siblings/and specifically a twin that truly love him. The family is still majorly screwed up, don't get me wrong, but they have this drive to take care of each other that makes my heart ache. I liiiiive for sibling angst, so figuring out the individual dynamics between the siblings has been ridiculously fun. Close sibling friendships might be my true weakness ?? so it was really important to me to develop that relationship between my MMC/his twin sister and explore what it looks like for them to go into my version of the merge loving each other the entire time.

imo if you boil Kai down to one core emotion its Desperate with an underscore of Rage, and my MMC is Desperate with an underscore of Sorrow. He's living with the knowledge that he could single handedly destroy his entire family, or save everyone with his death at his sister's hands. He gives up basically everything to be a good big brother and protect them, sacrificing his own happiness in the process. (don't worry tho he still has the inherent darkness, sarcasm/the wit we all know and love - he's an emotional mess and i adore him!!)

As for why I find Bonkai inspiring, again I think it's all the possibilities of the ship itself. I was so excited for Bonnie to have someone who was 100% obsessed with her, and I think if given the chance she would have been that person for Kai, too. He's never had someone love him/protect him, and if they'd been a couple I think Bonnie 100% would have stood between him and the rest of the geminis.

I wanted to finally see a badass (mostly healthy) witch couple, and bonkai would have just ?? decimated everyone else on the board. So with my writing I explored the dynamics of them being willing to do anything to keep each other safe/plus the complexities of their individual power/what it would be like if they could work together.

I focused a lot on the opposing personalities/undeniable understanding that bonkai has. So they still fight but there's that element of ...uh, do you guys need a room or ?? They remind me of magnets - you can never tell if they're going to make out or try to kill each other or both.

I added the elements of a childhood friendship between my FMC and the twins, so there's some fun friendship dynamics there, too.
