Any structure requires timely monitoring and inspection, in order to ensure it’s the structural integrity of the building is intact. Structural health monitoring (SHM) refers to the process of implementing damage detection for engineering structures such as buildings and bridges. The SHM process is also essential in estimating performance deterioration of civil infrastructures and detect the evolution of damage. There are different types of equipment and sensors used in the SHM process that help to monitor the structural health of the building. For instance, an accelerometer is an electromechanical device used for measuring acceleration forces through single or multi-axis directions.
A system of SHM applications typically consists of sensors that collect data related to changes in structure and the state of its materials. The data collected from these sensors are then processed by computer algorithms. Analysis results are reported to the company that owns the building, which can then use the information to make a determination about the condition of the building. The analysis provides important insights into the structural health of a building and the ability to perform repairs. Some applications use infrared technology to detect changes in the health of a structure. Furthermore, some of the applications include acoustic wave energy, ionization, and thermal imaging. By comparing structural health data with architectural drawings and plans, a company can determine problems and take corrective action.
