anyway! thin slicing is, to quote wikipedia,

a term used in psychology and philosophy to describe the ability to find patterns in events based only on "thin slices", or narrow windows, of experience. The term refers to the process of making very quick inferences about the state, characteristics or details of an individual or situation with minimal amounts of information.

and in terms of efficacy (again from wikipedia):

Research has found that brief judgments based on thin-slicing are similar to those judgments based on much more information. Judgments based on thin-slicing can be as accurate, or even more so, than judgments based on much more information.

there was a specific study measuring thin slicing in regard to personality abnormalities, and it concluded that people could identify personality disorder after 30 seconds of observation. so...

...put that together, and it becomes very likely that a lot of people (both in universe and out) identify izaya's antisocial tendencies via thin slicing and are seemingly instinctually repelled from him. he just, gives people "bad vibes" or makes them feel "weird," despite the fact that a lot of the people who say this in-universe are heavily involved with a criminal lifestyle and thus have less moral objections than a random person would

basically people r insta-identifying izaya as a sociopath bc of thin slicing, and not realizing theyre doing it

also disclaimer: YES thin slicing can ABSOLUTELY lead to bigoted beliefs- i.e. if you think gay people are "dangerous," you will begin to feel threatened and uneasy bc of thin slicing picking up on someone being gay and registering it as a threat. im not hailing thin slicing as the be all end all of Knowing How People Are, in fact whats happening to izaya is actually the antethisis of that- the problem is people r feeling uneasy bc of a common stereotype about aspd and thin slicing is applying it to izaya. again yes there r a lot of valid reasons to be uneasy around izaya, hes done a lot of bad things obviously, but a lot of the people exhibiting unease are also people who have done bad things, sometimes arguably just as bad or WORSE than things izaya has done

Recipe Corner: Deep fried drumsticks in garlic parmesan sauce

Yesterday felt like a fried chicken kind of night so I whipped up a batch of fried chicken drumsticks, an easy recipe that if inexpensive and delicious!

Ingredients:

1 package of chicken drumsticks (10 is what I work with)

Buttermilk

Flour

Pepper and salt

Smoked paprika (If desired)

Peanut or Vegetable oil

Butter (sticks work best)

1 TBLSP of garlic powder

Heavy cream

Note: In this recipe I use a deep frying skillet on the stove but if you have an electric deep fryer this recipe still works! :)

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. On a large non-stick baking sheet lay out your drumsticks and poke holes in the meat using a fork. Sprinkle an even amount of pepper and smoked paprika over the chicken on both sides; lightly salt then bake for an hour and thirty minutes or until meat thermometer reads 165 degrees. While the chicken cooks pour a generous amount of flour into a large bowl and set aside for later. When the chicken is done remove it from the oven then put the drumsticks into a large mixing bowl; pour enough buttermilk over the drumsticks so they're thoroughly coated. Roll each drumstick in flour until you can't see any chicken then set aside. Fill the deep frying skillet with just enough peanut or vegetable oil so that the drumsticks will be submerged then heat oil until little bubbles begin to surface. Using a pair of tongs place three drumsticks in the skillet and fry until golden brown, repeat until all drumsticks are fried.

For the sauce:

Take three sticks of butter and place them in a microwave safe bowl or glass measuring cup, pour in garlic powder along with a dash of hot sauce and heavy cream. Melt in the microwave for 3 minutes then stir and slowly pour over three drumsticks at a time; dust with parmesan cheese.

The bar doors open, earning the attention of three young adults, one who is awaiting your presence. Who’s been anticipating you all morning. You grin, waving to your new friends you met two weeks ago at the market. “Hey, [Name]! Good to see ya!” Vander greets you as he wipes down a glass cup. 

“Hiii, Vander. Silco, and Felicia.” You nod your head politely to the other two who do the same with smiles adorning their faces. “I brought you that can opener, can’t believe you forgot it!” You snicker, placing the metal object down on his counter before him. He nervously laughs in response, his eyes flickering over to his close friends who have amused expressions. 

“Silly me, just a forgetful guy.” He defends himself and you tilt your head. “Really? I would’ve never guessed! I feel like your memory is better than mine.” You pout your lips. Silco mumbles something into Felicia’s ear who giggles in response. Luckily you didn’t hear what it was. Vander glares at them. 

“Well, I can’t stay too long, my brother is waiting for me.” You huff, putting your hands on your hips. “It was great seeing you three. We have to hang out again!” You tell them, taking steps back. “We’d love to.” Felicia says. 

“Yeah, we would! You could even come visit the bar anytime. I’d love the company.” Vander blurts out and you smile at him. “Guess I’ll have to then, don’t want you getting lonely with all your customers.” You poke fun with him, your back slightly hitting the door. His face heats up. 

“Ha! Yeah, still… you should.” He rasps and you scrunch your nose. “I’ll have to come by later this week.” You wink at him, pushing the doors open as you swiftly leave. 

He lets out a loud groan once he knows you’re gone. “I’m such an idiot.” He takes the can opener, adding it to his stack of others. “Yeah, you are.” Silco takes a sharp breath, astounded by the second embarrassment he was feeling. “It wasn’t that bad.” Felicia nudges the guy beside her. “What? He looked like a total dog. He makes his crush so evident.” 

“Do I really?” Vander’s eyes widened in fear. Hoping that wasn’t the case. He didn’t want to look desperate. 

“Yes.” “No.” 

The two say at the same time, then glaring at one another. “No, Vander. You seem timid for sure but I don’t think she knows there’s meaning like that behind it.” Felicia assures her friend. He lets out a sigh. “I just- I’ve never been like this around a girl. She’s perfect! Like- Perfect!” He gesticulates, running fingers through his hair dramatically. 

“Her humor? She’s actually really funny. Did you see the way she winked at me by the way? Almost died on the spot.” He exaggerates to his best friends. Felicia presses her lips together trying not to laugh as Silco pinches the bridge of his nose. Not wanting to hear this. 

“I mean for real, it was the hottest thing. She’s smooth with it, I wonder if it means something.” Vander ponders, placing down his drink cup. “It was just a wink, dude.” Silco exclaims with an “are you for real?” look. “A wink that could’ve had an undertone.” Vander points at him. 

“And she’s going to come by later this week. Oh man.” Vander now begins to panic. He invited you to sit at the bar. Later in the week is the weekend… obviously. But that means the rowdier customers will be there. He’ll barely have the chance to speak with you. Maybe you’ll stay late enough to hang out afterwards? Or come early enough where you guys can talk. 

“Yeah you asked her like a real desperate dog.” Silco comments and Vander’s face drops. “No I didn’t.” His eyebrows furrow. “If you say so.” 

“You’re being a real hater, Silc.” Vander huffs, crossing his arms. “Yeah because you met her two weeks ago and you won’t shut up about her.” The boy esaperates. Earning a frown. “And I’ll continue to talk about her. Now it’s to spite you.” 

“You two are such idiots.” Felicia sighs, slumping forward on the counter. “Vander certainly is. I’m growing a little worried for [Name].” Silco insults his friend who rolled his eyes. “Whatever man. She’s different. I’m just saying.” He shrugs his shoulders and Silco scoffs out a laugh. “You’re whipped on a whole different level.” 

“I might be. I don’t know what to do about it.” Vander makes a face. “As time goes on I’m sure you’ll figure it out.” Felicia encourages him. “Mm, yeah. Until then I’m going to continue talking about her.” He cheekily smiles. “Of course you are. Because you don’t know peace.” Silco groans. 

“You don’t deserve peace.” Vander chuckles. “I’ll just have to go tell [Name] about how you feel I guess…” He stands from the bar stool. “She’s probably not too far from here.” He starts. “Don’t do that! That’s not even funny!” Vander whines like a child. His heart is genuinely racing by his buddy threatening to tell his crush his feelings like they were in grade school.

i love when fic authors write ava being really excited about going to the grocery store it’s like!!! yes! ava is excited to see oat milk. yes she wants to try every variation of haribo candies in every tiny european corner store they visit. yes she loves that things come in cans and that there’s drinks that are blue like in star wars

and also yes to bea seeing her swerve hard away from the baby food aisle. sneering in tandem with her at the applesauce and at cans of watery soup. bea teaching her how to season things so they don’t taste like powerlessness and neglect and hunger and rotting away

sighing indulgently when ava appears with another box of cereal to mow through in one night. bea brushing granola pieces off the bed without a word while ava sits cross-legged on her crumpled-up side with a book in her lap, one hand pressing the pages flat and the other elbow-deep in a box of chocolate hazelnut granola. scattering light crumbs everywhere

just yes to ava loving food and approaching it with so much joy it makes beatrice realise that there is actually something holy in a silce of orange, in a snack cake and in granola crumbs and haribos in the shape of little frogs.
