Yeah this game used to have themes of how everyone who isn't a human had it pretty fucking rough. They shouldn't be humanized because THEY'RE NOT HUMANS THEY'RE QUNARI. They shouldn't fit in your box because it's not their box. There's no justice to be had so they can just look and act like everyone else. They're literally IN THE LORE a little bit of a lot of things, elf, human, DRAGON, etc. They're not going to look visually appealing just because they have the same level of intelligence and same abilities as the rest of the races of thedas. This is a fantasy world.

VG never should've made them more human because it turned the Fandom into a bunch of spineless whiney babies about it. "Oh their depiction in DA2 is so animalistic, how could they do this disservice!" That's like looking me dead in the eyes and saying "that werewolf is too wolfy".... yeah it's a FUCKING WEREWOLF. Vg made them all just tall people with various shades of grey skin and horns. The only bit of bite they had left from previous games was the qun society itself and holy shit did they fuck that up. It became less about being a qunari and more about being in the qun, which was going well in dai because it was a lore opening. They threw that in the trash and made a new "bad guy" offset of the qun because people in the fandom kept applying real world shit to them.

Thedas didn't need your real world justice, it needed your fucking eyes and ears.

"Oh (insert race) is based off of (insert marginalized culture)." You don't know how fucking cringey that makes you sound and that shit is precisely what ruined the games. Now they're trying to not step on toes and you get the Disney-fied bullshit that veilguard was. The qunari are not Mongolians/Africans/Native Australians, they're qunari. The elves are not American Indigenous people, they're elves. This is Thedas not Earth. If yall just let them tell the fucking story the way they intended, we wouldn't have this mess.

I'm definitely missing key arguments here but I don't have the energy to articulate a full fucking rant rn. I'm aware this will be twisted like I'm saying some awful shit because the way I speak/type and what I mean tend to have a disconnect. That being said...discussions welcome. I was just accused of being a fascist and alt-right by an ex friend

As some of you might know, I was born and raised in SF, and was brought up in the woke mind cult. I did manage to break free of it though, and got to see how far I’ve come these past few days.

After the 16 election, I, like everyone else in the cult, was completely devastated and actually had a panic attack on election night. Yes, I was also sobbing.

But the next few days I started to regain some emotional control, + started wondering why so many people voted for him. Surely the entire country wasn’t what Queen Hillary and Messiah Rachel Maddow said it was? Was everyone a foaming at the mouth racist? What was the normal American thinking in voting for Trump? So I started messaging some people on tumblr and followed some light conservative accounts. Asking questions, coming to them with newspaper articles and exchanging what the other side was saying. And you know what the craziest part was? These were super nice people, nothing like what I had been taught, and they were SO much more tolerant and loving than the infighting and bullying tactics that I had been told was what politics was. The liberal news and MSM love to espouse how foaming at the mouth conservatives are, and claim that conservatives are the ones in a cult and won’t hear any dissenting opinions, whereas the left can’t agree on anything! While ignoring the fact that they say Vote Blue No Matter Who, and what they dissent on is a minute detail on an article that has alternative facts to begin with. Or rather, perfectly curated facts, and they decry about different pant suit colors.

I started to listen and reevaluate my views, and as I was 18, what I wanted to do with my life. Then I saw a buzzfeed article on how oppressive some 50s housewife guide was. When I read it, I remember thinking how much I actually wanted it. I had always been one of those super girly girls. Hell, I had 20 imaginary kids, rather than imaginary friends. I started looking for blogs like that, anything sort of ‘trad’ but it had actually not become a thing (and wouldn’t for about 6 more months), so I tried to curate my own version on tumblr. I started wearing dresses, I became my old self, rather than the depressed, on all the meds, foaming at the mouth, won’t listen to anyone that doesn’t follow my extremely narrow views girl that I had been.

Fast forward almost 10 years later, + I have a wonderful masculine hubby and I am a sahw. I can’t do cooking and cleaning at this point as I had some massive heart failure 2 years ago due to genetics (yes we are sure 😂 I was supposed to get this when I was 8, not 3x), but I am extremely happy with my life, am not on any psychotic meds, and have finally found a treatment for my disability where I can start healing my dislocated body and be able to take care of the house.

Then I hear from my mother this past weekend. A childhood friend of mine’s mom was at an art show my mother was producing, and had told her that my friend, G, had told the mother that I was posting fascist shit and super anti lgbt stuff. I get a phone call from my mother going off the handle at me, as my mother has slid into this cult in the past number of years since Trump. She claims that I must have a finsta, and wants to know what the hell I said to make my friend feel so ‘unsafe’ around me. My mom knows all of my social media accounts and knows all of my newfound views. She doesn’t like them, and jokes all the time about how I’m going to wake up and realize I was brainwashed and come back, but she leaves them alone for the most part. Even how I’m now prolife.

Signal Boosting

Today’s comic is one of very few Dobson did in the weird interphase where he replaced his old avatar with a “younger” and thinner looking version before he turned himself into a Un-Carebear. And it is a comic that in my opinion has become a bit hilarious in hindsight, considering Dobson’s later obsession with online platforms and the belief he was a voice for others on them

The thing about the comic (or rather one panel cartoon) is, in itself I do not consider it really an “offensive” or irritating one, like many others by him. In fact, technically speaking it is for example one of the cleanest drawn ones he ever did. Proportions are okay and even the number of fingers on the hands are consistent as far as I see. It also has for a lack of a better word, a clear and understandable message. Dobson poking fun at the concept of  shallow “signal boosting” online and how it may not really contribute to actually helping the ones in need, as a “practical” action would speak more or could make more of a difference, then just words and “awareness”

However, there are a few things about the comic I want to point out, that not really make Dobson look good on detail.

For starters, this cartoon was published as part of SYAC. A comic series that Dobson himself described as a webcomic meant to poke fun at things webcomic artists (or rather him) experience, or something to talk about geek culture. How exactly does a comic criticizing the nature of signal boosting and poverty of the homeless correlate with those themes?

Second, obviously the guy who wrote the blogpost and feels like he made a difference, is meant to be seen as “in the wrong”, because he ignores the homeless people next to him on the street. But, if Dobson tries to make himself look in any way or form good in this one, he fails, because he is ignoring them too in a manner.

Oh sure, he is raising an eyebrow at the other guy, likely because he is aware of the situation they are in and how it is in contrast to what the guy says. But Dobson’s author avatar isn’t doing anything positive either. Absurdely enough, I think that if Dobson wanted to actually have a positive “spin” on the comic, he would have just simply had to draw his avatar actually handing the homeless guys some money. Instead he passes them buy, holding in his hand what seems to be a an expensive soda or squishy.

Lastly, if the comic is meant to be a criticism at online “slacktivism”, then Dobson is in my opinion one of the last people on the planet to take jabs at it.

Look, my personal opinion on “online activism” and youtubers making videos to spread “awareness” is… complicated to say the least. I do believe there are some people out there who genuinely do something that makes at least a bit of a difference in the world, by e.g. volunteering in social programs to help or raise money/food and giving it to those who really need it. But others… there is a reason a “clip” like this from South Park exists and works.

And Dobson, based on everything I know, is just among those “other” people.

A failed webcomic artist, who has never done anything for others than to angrily demand things change, but not doing any actual “fighting” or protesting for someones rights. And yet believes that his shitty cartoons he occasionally released have a genuine positive impact on the world.

Truth be told, the only positive impact Dobson has on the world right now, is because he's no longer around. And even that is not entirely true, because it makes actually doing research on the guys stuff harder than usual, if you don’t have that parrot repeating the same shit over and over.
