West Indies Secure Lead But Sri Lanka Close In 

2nd Test (Day 3) - Sri Lanka vs West Indies - Galle 

Sri Lanka were left in a tight situation on a tricky turning pitch as they finished the third day of the second and final cricket Test at 46 for 2 in the second innings after the West Indies secured a vital 49 runs lead on the first innings at the Galle International Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

Earlier the West Indies continuing their first innings from an overnight 69 for 1 went through a process of fluctuation to reach 253 all out from what looked like a well secured 166 for 2 at one stage as they slumped to 208 for 8.

It was finally left to the last of the recognized West Indies batter Kyle Mayers to stand his ground and hold the innings together during a ninth wicket partnership of 48 with Weerasammy Permaul who made 15 useful runs in 38 balls.

Mayers eventually ran out of partners and was unbeaten on 36 made in 64 balls with two fours and a six to bring some respectability to the West Indies total after skipper Kraigg Brathwaite top scored with 72 before he was bowled by left arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya that triggered the collapse.

But it was Sri Lanka off spinner Ramesh Mendis who was the main stumbling block for the West Indies as he went on to pick up six wickets that included the scalps of Nkrumah Bonner (35), Shai Hope (22) and Jason Holder (4) with all three batters falling leg-before the wicket.

Mendis also had the wicket of Roston Chase for 10 and bowled Joshu da Silva for a first-ball duck.

Faced with a first innings deficit of 49 runs, Sri Lanka did not start well in the second innings and lost opener Dimuth Karunaratne run out for six followed by Oshada Fernando also unable to make his ground with his score on 14 as the home team ended the day at 46 for 2 with Pathum Nissanka Silva unbeaten on 21.

Sri Lanka Smash West Indies In Comfortable 164 Victory 

2nd Test (Day 5) - Sri Lanka vs West Indies - Galle 

The West Indies cricketers gave their host Sri Lanka one of the most comfortable victories in Test cricket as they caved in to lose by 164 runs on the fifth and final day of the second and final Test at the Galle International Cricket stadium on Friday. Even the Sri Lankans would have been surprised they wrapped up the match in just 56.1 overs as the West Indies crashed to be all out for 132 after they were set a 297 target.

Sri Lanka resumed the final day’s play at 328 for 8, declared at 345 for 9 with Dhananjaya de Silva making an unbeaten 155 from 262 balls in more than six hours of batting.

Dhananjaya was adjudged player of the match, while off-spinner Ramesh Mendis was declared player of the series for a haul of 18 wickets in the two-match series.

For the West Indies the result also marked a major collapse in the match as they lost eight wickets for just 40 runs, after calling the shots at 92 for 2 at one stage.

The floodgates opened in full flow after Shai Hope fell to Mendis, who missed a hat-trick after also having the wicket of Roston Chase for a first-ball duck and four balls later accounted for Kyle Mayers, who was also out without scoring in the same over.

When top scorer Nkrumah Bonner was bowled for 44 by left arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya, it was just a matter of minutes before the West Indies were all out for 132 with Jason Holder (3) and Joshua da Silva remaining not out on 4 as Sri Lanka won the series 2-0.
