Vera's Babylon 5 Rewatch – Soul Hunter

The fact that we don't really see these guys again until way way later in the movies kinda throws me off

Dr. Franklin my beloved, he has arrived… I see they're still not letting Ivanova use contractions yet tho 😔

Sinclair doesn't get enough credit for not losing his mind with all this shit (and it only gets worse for him)��� Delenn grabbing his sidearm and threatening to shoot up the medbay because there's a guy who literally steals souls… Regular Tuesday for the poor guy. No wonder he became a Minbari saint.

There's always Sinclair/Garibaldi middle aged man yaoi moments for those with an open mind… The fond tolerance with which Sinclair listens to Garibaldi's complaints about how difficult it is to keep him safe… Why don't you guys just UNfasten and UNzip each other while you're at it 😂

Genuinely something so viscerally uncomfortable and disturbing about the scene where the guy is trying to steal Delenn's soul. Not only is Mira Furlan's agonized cries just heart-rending but the way the scene just drags on and on… Yikes, man

I have just recently finished the Night Lords novel Blood Reaver, and one the things that keeps surprising me about the Chaos Marines is how...... "Civil" some of them actually are, relatively speaking anyway.

I haven't read too many books from the viewpoints of the Chaos Marines and most of what I know of them comes from what I've read on wikis but seeing characters like Talos of the Night Lords or Kharn actually having moments of calm, rational thoughts really surprised me and having some characters actually joke with others wasn't something I expected from the Chaos Legions.

Has anyone else found moments like these and was anyone surprised to see them?

Two episodes in and Babylon 5 is still very good!

I didn't twig last episode that Delen is Minbari, i.e. the species that humanity was at war with. She seems to be among the friendliest of the aliens with Sinclair and Garibaldi, so I'm fascinated to learn more of the backstory there.

Ivanova continues to get 100% of the best lines and remains my favourite. Like it's not even close.

(I made an extra effort this episode to remember names!)

Interesting to see the sci-fi/fantasy lines being blurred here - it seems like, for all the doubts cast on the idea of the soul specifically, the Soul Hunters genuinely can sense the coming of death.

It strikes me that this doesn't seem to cause the human characters any disquiet. In the context of the telepathy in the previous episode, maybe there any just more paranormal abilities in this universe, by aliens and humans alike?

I also didn't twig last episode that humans have a reserved role on Babylon 5 and there are access levels only humans can get. That feels dodgy! Didn't they say last episode that they weren't the galaxy's policeman? Where does the line get drawn?

Actually, I'm making assumptions here that Earther = human. I don't think we know yet if the Earth Alliance encompasses all humans, or if it's exclusively human.

Either way I'm enjoying watching the worldbuilding play out, more of that please 👍

Every time I do a rewatch of B5 I somehow get through The Gathering, then am all enthusiastic about Midnight on the Firing Line and then remember that Soul Hunter is next and have to force myself to keep going. And then, even though I'm really not a fan of that episode, it's always not quite as bad as I remembered.

I got a security related chuckle out of the episode twice. First, Sinclair, who is all concerned about the guy in Medlab, goes, "I'll have somebody from security here within the hour." Yeah. Sounds good. No need to hurry there. And then the guard seems more concerned about people entering than anyone leaving.

The scene that really makes the episode worth watching for me is the one with the space burial. It has Ivanova and Franklin.

I "met" Richard Biggs at conventions three times before I ever saw the show. That scene is really rough to watch, knowing that he died very young and unexpectedly.

I only noticed this time that the way they're playing it makes it seem as if the little "speech" she gives is totally just a Susan thing since Franklin seems to be surprised by it. I think it fits the character, so I'm going to go with that as part of my Susan head canon from now on.

I also think the episode does a very good job with introducing us to the Minbari's beliefs regarding their souls, which will turn out to be pretty important soon enough.

Still. Happy to be past it. That's 1/3 of my least favorite episodes. (Meh. Maybe not entirely accurate. I tend to just ignore the whole Byron thing this early on as it's so far off.)
