Chicago has reached the bipolar phase of its winter where it tries to kill us all by snowing, then getting outrageously cold, then snowing again before the temperature rises to just a teensy bit above freezing, then drops again. So the streets and sidewalks are deathtraps, but the Danger Beagle laughs in the face of peril. She still wants her 6+-mile walk everyday. So I have these yaktrax things that help at least a little with not dying of the sidewalk bashing in my occipital. They are a sort of rubber frame that, in theory, stretches around the outline of the sole of one's shoe. Except my winter boots are for dudes, because I have not found a pair for women that are not absurd in prioritizing look over functionality (see above re: mandatory 6+-mile Danger Beagling daily). I bought the yaktrax for my dainty lady feet shoes, though, and my boots are, of necessity, rather too big for my feet. The result is that he yaktrax seem to want to escape. Yesterday, I lost one and the Spousal Unit graciously hunted it down. Today, I suddenly realized outside the dog park that I had lost both. I was going to write them off, but I was pretty sure it had only been a short while since I lost them. An apparent digression: Lately, I have been re-listening to all of "Sparks Nevada: Marshal on Mars" in order. I am out of the Pod F. Tompkast, Spontaneanation, Stay F. Homekins, and The Neighborhood Listen. I am out of Craig's List and Settling the Score. Danger Beagling consumes a LOT of podcasts, friends. So, Sparks it has been, and I have this to say: —Goddamn if that theme song is not a jolt of endorphins every single time —Sara Watkins' POW! is still the POW! to beat —I can't believe I'd forgotten how straight @paulftompkins plays it when he sings the theme song when the Jupiter Spy is Sparks —I can't believe I'd forgotten how he then utterly destroys MEJ when the Jupiter Spy is Croach and MEJ is just trying to get through the song. ANYHOODLES. Despite my LIMITED HUMAN SENSES, and my life-long urban dwelling, I was inspired NOT to surrender to the loss of my yaktrax, because there's crunchy, crunchy snow all over, so I was leaving two sets of footprints (no, Jesus does not come into this), and I was reasonably sure that the tall weeds (Danger Beagle loves the tall weeds—she once flushed a Bun and a Barn Cat in rapid succession and she will NEVER FORGET) immediately next to the off-leash part of the dog park was the most likely place for them to have been yanked off.

Reader, I tracked those yaktrax. Praise Nanotech.

It’s a straight up fact that Sparks cannot for the life of him win when it comes to his love life.

But the extent to how tragic it genuinely is just stays in my head.

I think about it at least once a day.

Slight spoilers:

Red and Sparks had no chance, Sparks was and always was the rebound from the start.

Rebecca rushed into it and got upset when Sparks (for obvious reasons) didn’t want to rush into it as fast and used it as a way to manipulate him. She even published an in-depth timeline of their relationship and bashed him any chance she got.

Mercy and Sparks is a little iffy imo, with them actually functioning as a couple (for the five minutes we see them interacting as a “couple”), but it does seem that it originally was a relationship turned sour and when they got back together, Mercy was so worried that it’ll go sour again that she ended up being the reason the relationship ended.

Now with Ginny, I will FOREVER be upset on how it ended between them.

They were genuinely so sweet and happy together and were so perfect for each other.

In every universe except the main universe they were together and that must’ve hurt so bad.

It must’ve killed Sparks to realize that even if he gave his all to love that he still couldn’t be loved back.

(I also felt like he must’ve had a sinking gut feeling throughout Croach’s and Red’s wedding.)

I will forever sympathize and love Sparks no matter what.

coming back to this blog to say. I have too many feelings about the thrilling adventure hour. I need to call into the universe that hey I'm here and I still think of Sparks Nevada daily. I think about Frank & Sadie every time I see alcohol (I'm not a drinker, that's probably why that association is so strong since I don't have a different thing to associate). I hope somewhere out there the Bens know they changed the entire world of a kid back when they started this podcast. And that kid took on Sparks as a nickname and sent in questions to the trivia, and just. I love those worlds. I miss them. Even if they've never left me

DOES NOBODY POINT OUT THE FACT THAT DURING THE APRIL FOOLS DAY SHOW, THE MOMENT REBBECA REALIZES SPARKS IS AFRAID OF COMMITMENT IS BECAUSE HE REFUSES TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT CROACH IS HIS DEPUTY?? 😭 ALSO SHE ADRESSES THE PROBLEM BY EMPHASIZING ON RELATIONSHIP WHICH IMPLIES SPARKS AND CROACH CAN BE DEEMED AS A RELATIONSHIP (im insane, don't take this seriously folks)

anon of the millennium. caught me whilst it’s been on the brain a little bit the past few days.

i think i made a small post about it before but never gave my thoughts on it; one of the few things I would’ve changed about Sparks specifically and his development is giving him a proper sit-down heart-to-heart with Red.

maybe around either Pemily’s appearance or right before Ginny. both instances i really think were important for Sparks’ development in general (one confronting his whole issue with his parents and the USSA, the other confronting his issue with happy relationships). And I mean Red specifically. she’s known him the longest (aside from his parents), she’s seen the worst of him, and their similar experiences (croach dying, emotional communication problems, and later both having awful breakdowns of their respective marriages) def means Red would’ve been able to get thru to him better than anyone else (including Ginny.)

- i think it would’ve been super interesting to see Carson again; whether he was older or younger than Sparks might’ve been an interesting parallel for either dynamic with Cactoid Jim or Pemily

- colonel ticktock was an underrated segment. i couldn’t believe i couldn’t find anything on it when i was going through old posts and accounts. 100% my favourite theme song
